Gibson

The home of Gibson electric guitars today is “Gibson USA,” built in 1974 in Nashville specifically for the production of Gibson’s Les Paul guitars. Although the entire guitar industry went through a slump in the late ’70s, the spirit of innovation remained strong at Gibson. In response to a growing demand for vintage stylings, Gibson tapped its rich history and reissued the dot-neck version of the ES-335 in 1981 and the flametop sunburst Les Paul in 1982. At the same time, two legendary guitarists joined Gibson- B.B. King in 1980 with the Lucille model and Chet Atkins in 1982 with his new concept of a solidbody acoustic guitar.

Does anyone have any ideas what the value of a 56 Gibson ES-350 Sprucetop in good condition is?

The guitar is signed by a late legendary guitarist, but I want to find out a base worth of this guitar.

Please email me if anyone knows the value of just the guitar without a signature.

There is several ES-350 (i dont mean ES350T)in the market
      Years between 1947-1956.
Price depends on manythings but average it is 3500-6500 dollars. If the sign is Barney Kessel it would arise it high. I think (dont know) signs x-tras are subjective appreciates.

  4. Weirdo Gibson ES-330TD
    Humpy

My friend has a ES-330TD which he traded for a Fender Telecaster about 30 years ago with a friend whom bought the ES new from the store years earlier.
    -2 chrome p-90 pickups
-neck joint at 15th fret (short neck)
    -trapeze tailpiece
    -kluson tuners
though..near to the cutaway below the white pickguard/scratchplate there is a fifth control : master volume control.
i’ve been crawling through the internet in order to find any info on this guitar..like the manufacturing date and why this guitar has a fifth control…i can’t find anything about this fifth control thingy!
    any info is welcome !!

I also have a Gibson ES-330TD and haven’t been able to find out much about it. I received it as a wedding gift from a friend who had a flaky ex-roommate leave it behind as rent payment. This was over 10 years ago, I don’t know it’s origin before that.
I don’t have the original pick-ups and it’s missing the pickguard.
It does have the trapeze tailpiece and the short neck.

The tuners say "S N deluxe"
It does not have the fifth control.
It has block inlays on the neck. Which is the original neck, as it has the ID # stamped on it. The only info I could find was in the Gibson Bluebook. It says they were made from 1959-1972 but that they had dot inlays.

I’m sure it’s not worth all that much because it’s missing some parts, but it feels and sounds great and I’d like to know more about it.

Does the fifth knob on yours look like original hardware or added later?

        jisk heslinga

Last week I bought a Gibson ES 330TD with a fifth control, below the scratchplate (that is missing)!
The serial number at the back of the block inlay neck is not visible anymore. Through the body’s upper f-shape hole, you can read (only) "ES 330 TD" at the inside, no certficate paper.
So, although it looks nice, I have the impression that my 330 TD has had a lot of maltreatment and still keeps a lot of mystery. But it certainly has the fifth knob.

: Does the fifth knob on yours look like original hardware or added later?

An ES330TD is a very nice wedding gift!
I bought a new bright blue ES330TD at Manny’s in NYC in 1967 ($240–how times change), played lead guitar in a not-for-profit campus blues/rock band for a year or so, then sold it (big mistake) to a high school kid in 1970. True to the blue book, it had dot inlays on the neck. It had chrome pickups. The fifth control really is weird–mine didn’t have it, nor have I seen it on other Gibsons, but I’m no guitar expert.
In the 1980’s, a guitar shop owner told me my 330 was by then worth around $1500. I told him that was surprising, because mine, while pretty to look at, had been musically disappointing–it had a very bassy tone and limited treble for soloing, even when played through a Fender Super Reverb, an excellent lead guitar amp. Worst of all, it had bursts of screechy feedback when played loud. (My friend’s ES335, with better pickups and better sound than mine, had the same feedback problem. He even tried stuffing rags into the f-holes to prevent it.) To be fair, my guitar had a pleasant tone (at moderate volume levels) and nice action, and would probably have done OK as a rhythm guitar–it just wasn’t wired for soloing.
The guitar shop owner replied that my old 330 wasn’t valuable for musical quality, but simply because Gibson had not made very many blue ones.
For what it’s worth, an online guitar dealer has a cherry red 330TD pending sale for about 2 grand. (It has black plastic pickups, not chrome, which I think means it’s older than my ’67. Also, I think it has block inlays instead of dots.) So if you ever sell your old Gibson, get what it’s worth. But if you like the way it plays and sounds, keep it; there are not many nicer guitars around.

  5. 1965 Gibson J-45 Serial #253515
    Win

Can someone please suggest someone who can give my guitar some TLC?

In addition to it’s years in New Jersey, Connecticut, and Washington, D.C., it has spent 3 years in the bush in Liberia, 3 years on the shores of Ghana, a year in savannah of Zambia, and another 3 years in the rice fields of Bangladesh. It has entertained countless Peace Corps volunteers, children of all ages and origins, lepers, governors, revolutionaries, and some very wonderful commercial sex workers (no, not during business hours!). Anyway, it needs to have its bent tuning peg straightened out, its bridge adjusted, and a few minor dings repaired. All in all, for what it’s done, it’s in wonderful shape. I would really appreciate your counsel as to who would give it the attention it deserves.

    Regards,

    Win

      Dear J;
I have a 1975 Gibson L6-S for sale. It is in Excellent condition, and the Gibson signature hard shell case is included. Bill Lawrence designed this model and Gibson manufactured them from 73-75. Carlos Santana thought it was just a great axe!
I replaced the neck humbucker with a Seymour Duncan SH-1 "’59 model" a few years back. It turned out to be a good move. The original Gibson Humbucker is boxed, and ready to be re-installed, if desired. She’s a really nice axe, but I’m willing to sell her for "$695". We’re in Colorado.

I have a L6-s also, they were made between 76-78, kinda of rare. Mine and most of the other ones I have seen are a Natural blonde wood color, they are all maple. Kinda a cross between a Les Paul and a SG. But with a Lucille pickup selector. How much did you pay for yours? I paid 500 probably about 5 years ago.

      1. Re: gibson L6 s
        Brian

I believe that the L6S were made from 73 to 78 and came in natural with maple neck and black w/rosewood fret board. Ive seen various models searching the web Santana used one in the seventies. MINE IS A 78 Maple body and neck and fret board I just got it today for $300 with a hardshell case and it plays nice and is in pretty good shape . there is only 1 change made to it and that is the strap buttons were replaced with brass buttons.

      2. Re: gibson L6 s
        Nomad

: L6ers, range from at least 73 to 76. And were designed by Bill Lawrence. They are a great guitar, much rarer than the scores of SGs, Les Pauls, ect, but don`t, as of yet, command a high price. Get one relatively cheap now! Its said that players find the 6 pt selector quirky, and too unlike most guitar setups.

sound whole on the inside back on the center seam pad. something like J-45 or LG-1. The most made were, J-50,j-45 and B25. The J-50 and J45 were 16" at the lower bout and th
B25 is 131/2" in believe. Good luck.

I have a guitar that I bought a few years ago for $15.00. I know for a fact that it is at LEAST 70 years old, (I’ve had it about 20 years and the lady I bought it from had it about 50). Unfortunately, someone along the way tried to refinish it and there is no name on it anywhere. Can you give me an e-mail address where I can send a couple of good digital photos of it and would try to help me determine if it’s worth more than the $15.00 I paid for it? 🙂 I really want to buy a new Gibson (sunburst), around the size of the old J-45. Thank you very much!.

I have recently purchased both six and twelve string Eko Rangers to replace the pair that were stolen some years ago the 6 string I found in some classified ads and paid a mere £30 for it is in good original condition but I have to say that most of these 6 strings seem to be between £100 & £150, the 12 string Ihad to import from Finland and paid £160 for plus the shipping these seem to be around that price whe n you see them (not often) although I have seen them in ads from the US for a lot more

clean out the pots (aerosol keyboard cleaner – blows compressed air) – and the switch – if you have a leaf/blade switch, rub some sandpaper between the contacts to clean them
make sure the ground wire is still firmly soldered (all grounds should be soldered to the back of the volume pot and then there’s a wire running to one of the bridge adjuster screws – if this is off, your ground is gone)
check rest of cnxns – should all be tight soldered

I don’t own one, but I know where you can find one. Richard’s music in Lawrence Kansas has one for sale. It’s all original save one modification. The mod is another toggle switch, tastefully placed below the bridge which splits the neck pickup and runs both it and the bridge pick up at the same time for a quacky strat esque position 4 sound. the web page is http://www.richardsmusicstore.com Reply if you’re interested and I’ll get you his e-mail address. (it’s not posted on the page but their number is.)

He’s asking $395.00 for it and it has a gibson gig bag which is nice but obviously not original.

I have a ’78 RD custom w/ maple fret.they came with active pick ups made by moog and gibson-they are bright. I took them out and put in emg- I use it to play heavier stuff(angry tone)but when we went into the studio i used to double some tacks using on clean.I love it its tuff as hell and never goes out of tune.I own a ’82 LP and a new Sg and the RD fits in there like one of the family.I paid 700 for ot and I think the book price is 750 (mine was in awesome shape)if ya haven’t bought, get it.I know two bass players who have rd basses, that love there’s.the first foo-fighters album is all RD.

    1. Re: Beastie Boys gibson guitar.
      Al

It’s a Gibson ‘The Paul’ model. Probably late 70’s. All mahogony LP style with natural finish. I have the SG version of it. Seems like a good stripped-down Gibson if you can live without a maple top and big inlays.

      Me too Jim, I know mine’s a

Its the fines guitar I’v ever owned! The serial on mine is B222378. Hope I have been of some assistance maybe you know stuff you could tell me about it?

Can anyone estimate the worth of 1965 Gibson ES335 Cherry, Dual Pickup, No twang bar, Mother of Pearl block inlays, excellent condition, 340898 head ES-335 TDC. I am not a musician so any comments or statement of approximate worth would be appreciated.

I saw one very similar to mine in a Waikiki used musical instrument shope. They were asking either $3,000 or $6,000 for it. I’m not sure what year it was.

I am having a difficult time approximating its value. I do have pictures available and am willing to sell it. If any one can offer any advice or is interested please let me know….Thank you so much

I recently purchased a Gibson Marauder Custom and was wondering what year it is and what it is worth. It’s serial number is 00179575. It has the square pearl inlays and a more elaborate pick guard than I usually see on most marauders. The pick guard has a white outline, and the body is finished in a blonde sunburst. If you have any information please let me know.

          Here’s what I got from Gibson.com:

          Hello,
The Marauder Custom was produced from 1976 to 1977. It had a 3-way selector switch on the cutaway bout. We don’t have any parts for this model, but try contacting Classic Ax: 1-800-254-8058. They may have some vintage parts for this model. I have attached the schematic for a Marauder. It may be a little different than the Marauder Custom, but it’s the only one we have.I hope this helps!

I picked up a 76 Marauder Custom refirred with DiMarzios at a guitar show in Chicago last year for $325. Kind of a tobacco burst. White binding, square inlays, black flying v peghead, badass bridge. Low, fast action. Saw a cheaper model beat to hell in a pawn shop for $250. Not Gibson’s premier guitar, but I play mine more than my Les Pauls or my strat. I love it.

    2. Re: Eko 12 string
      Larrie Harr

To the best of my knowledge gleaned from research on the net they are bringing around $250.00 more or less depending on the condition of course. That isn’t much for such a vintage aged wood guitar that plays as well and sounds as good. But they don’t have the stigma of a gretch, gibson or fender. The american prices for a new SG for example would shock you. For the same or less money you can buy a twenty or thirty year old instrument in pristine condition. And it would be a much better guitar and a better investment of your money. I just recently bought a 1982 Fender American Strat, Just like the pewter Eric Clapton signature series, for five hundred dollars at a pawn shop. Excellent condition although quite dirty. It sounds fantastic though because of the seasoned wood and the old pickups. They don’t make any thing like they used too!

I purchased an EKO Ranger 12 a couple of years ago and paid $300. It sounds great especially when its plugged in. It is very resistant to feedback. I would recommend it to anyone. They seem to be going pretty cheap if yuo can find one.

I’ve got a 1974 Gibson SG, USA standard in cherry red, chrome hardware, P90’s. It’s well used and the machine heads are replaced, but it looks great and sounds even better. It’s not for sale and I know roughly what it’s worth, but I’m looking for a more accurate estimate. Also could anyone tell me how much original 70’s Eko’s are going for these days? I’ve got a 6 and a 12 string in the Ranger VII range. Cheers.

      1. Rare EKO 12 string Ranger
        Michael klima

In 1972 I traded a 35mm camera for an EKO 12 string acoustic guitar. I saw Jimmi Hendrix playing a similar 12 but with the spruce top.. I believe it was all dark Birdseye mahogany, even the top.. As I searched websites, I have never found an example of this dark wood model. It may have been a custom order? Is there any record of this type 12 string being made. Is it still being made? I believe it is one of the rarest “Ranger”? style made. I would appreciate any history or story of this guitar. Thank you so much . Michael Klima

Don’t get the tuning pegs repaired, this will reduce the value of a vintage piece. The L-5’s arenot worth as much as the vintage ES335’s and relations, but in good condition it should be worth at least £1500. The best way to keep a vintage guitar is in it’s case. It should certainly be kept away from direct sunlight. Also it should be dusted and polished with a gentle wood polish frequently. Any repairs to a vintage guitar will reduce its value to a collector.

Is there any other info contained in the serial number number on the body?
