  1. CS247 OR CS257 MADE BY OVATION!!! HELP ME OUT!!!!
    JAY

I’ve seen a certain guitar at Sam Ash store.
They have a different model # which is "sacp2474q".
    And it’s made in Korea.
A price tag tells me it’s a Celebrity Deluxe Quilt Top".
So I’ve been trying to find out from Ovation official website.
But there is nothing like that except similar looking thing(cs247).
I want you to tell me the difference and explanation.
I’ll really appreciate and respect your comments.
Thank you & have a nice day.

  5. Ovation CS-247 OP24+ pick-up problem
    Doc Gendreau

I removed one of the shims under the bridge of my Ovation. When I reasembled the pick-up and bridge, and restrung the guitar, I lost power to the pre-amp. I’ve checked it twice and installed a new battery but still no luck. Can someone help me with a schematic or information on installing the under bridge pic-up?
    Thank You…

: Does anybody know what this guitar is worth? Its made in Moosup CT and I’ve had it for over 17 years.

It’s worth anywhere between $100 & $200 depending on the condition (look in eBay). I believe their are four models of the AA14, AA14-1 through AA14-4. I believe the -1 through 4 indicates the type of finish. I have an AA14-1 which is a sunburst finish. These guitars are still fairly plentyful, I see them in pawn shops regularly.

I have an AA14 It was manufactured by Kaman Music Corporation in Bloomfield, CT. ww.kamanmusic.com It is tied in some how with Ovation.

I cant find my model # on thier site or in thier archives. I bought mine used, about 20 uears ago after my Guild was stolen. It is not a Guild but I love the sound and the action. I play simi-professionaly in a Gospel group and use it religiously (no pun intended). I would really love to have it refinished but dont know if it would be worth the cost…

I’ve got the exact same guitar (SN 071047), and I’m looking at selling it to somebody who can actually play it. My father willed it to me, and it’s a fine sounding instrument (with a steel fingerboard no less! No warping!), but I can’t play it anymore (medical). If you’re interested, drop me a note..

I’ve had the same guitar since I was 17. I’m 45 now and it is still my favorite. Last summer, the head broke right between the two E-Nuts. I wept. Thankfully, I was able to put some angle iron on it to fix it. Looks ugly but it didn’t change the sound. If you ever want to get rid of yours for a fair price let me know.

i have an applause aa14-2. i love it. perhaps it’s an earlier/later version of the aa14-4? i don’t know, either way i’ll never sell it. i was very fortunate finding it for just £50 (private sale) about 5 years ago. i use it for melodic alternate tunings. mine is coloured deep red, also with an aluminium fretboard. it was made in moosup, conn. usa. it’s an attractive yet unusually designed full bodied acoustic guitar. it sounds gr8 amped up with the ‘headway snake2’ pick up i had installed into it recently. i believe it is indeed rare.

do you have any photos of this guitar–i saw one in the pawn shop and i might get it.

            1. I just traded for one of these guitars. Sound is amazing (full and rich – bass) better than most ovations I have heard. No electronics on mine. I might add some later. I finally found this information and now know it not as rare as I thought but it is still a great player guitar. If someone wants a pretty guitar this isn’t it. It is a players guitar – great sound – but no one will want to steal it because of its looks.

My Applause AA14 (SN 101729) was purchased in 1980 for about $280.00, but to me it is priceless. The soft cases did not hold up too well, but the sound is decent and they take tons of normal abuse. The aluminum fretboard does wear down some after over 20 years of daily use, but not enough to influence playability. The plastic body is indestructible and the wooden face is about the only thing that needs tlc!

I’ve got an Applause AA14-4 SN#020726 also made in Conn. It was bought approx 25 years ago. My mother bought it for use in the choir. It was handed down to me when I started lessons in high school. To me it sounds better than any guitar I’ve picked up. Hell my music teacher tried to buy it off me. But it is an heirloom to me and I wouldn’t sell it. It’s priceless. I only wish it had an electric hook up.

My AA14-4 sounds awesome. It has both deep and bright tones. Another thing is that it stays in tune even after play in all night. It has a couple of very minor cracks below the saddle but they don’t go thru. It needs a coat of laquer is what I was told. But so far I’ve never seen an older serial # than mine. My AA14-4 has serial # 020621. I’m going to assume it’s made in 1976-77. Times are tough now for me so it’s fer sale

I cant seem to find anything on the net about this model. I know that it was made in conn. sometime in the mid to late 70’s.

        Hey Guys,
I have owned this Applause guitar for over 32 years. Next to a Tesco guitar my mother bought me when I was 13 years old this guitar is the first one I ever owned. Not sure why but I just hung on to it. Here I am at age 55, an accomplished guitarist that has played and loved guitars his whole life, wanting some input on this guitar. This is a Applause model number AA14 and SN 132392. It is just the common wood finish, not painted, lacquered or sunburst. It has the aluminum fret board and yes, still in pretty good shape. Does anyone have any knowledge on collectablilty or value (if any) on this guitar. Would certainly love some input. Thanks

I have an Ovation 1512 electric accustic. It has a great sound to it. Whether or not you want to repair the one you found depends on if you want it or not. I was told that they are only worth about $500.00 dollars if it is in excellent shape. Depending on whether you want to spend about $150 to restore it. Only you can decide if it is worth it. I personally think it is.

I’m actually trying to get more info too. i think it was made in the late 70’s. can you still play it? what does "bad shape" mean? It’s all about the sound. If it sounds like rubber bands on a pencil box, i wouldn’t hassle with a repair. You can spend a little more and get a nice american made guitar to last you for years to come. If you think you may have found a rare gem to bring on the antique roadshow, i think you might have to look in more sheds. The Ultra Series is nice, but i don’t think it’s highly sought after. If im correct i believe the GTX-19 is the one with 3 single coils, to be honest this guitar is shit, i was given one for free about 4 years ago when i began playing, i took the guitar and customized it to a fender strat which now i have offers for $1500 for, i replaced the pickups with a little 59er (neck), duncan performer (middle) and hot rail(bridge), bought a new fender strat neck, replaced all the hardware to gold, new gold gotoh tuners, replaced the neck plate to a vintage fender neckplate and the pickguard to one of the vintage single ply pickguards, replaced all electronics inside as well, i believe thats all, if your looking for a cheap guitar to customize, go for it, it well worth ur time, if i sold it now at the 1500 dollar offer id be making around 600 dollars, great investment

      I own this guitar.
Deep Bowl, Aluminum neck are big characteristics.
I hear a very metallic sound.
The outside output can do a sound.
It is a trifle, but likes a case very much.

I bought a roundback guitar several years ago when I didn’t know anything about guitars. I understand ovation has a patent (or something like that) on the roundback guitars. But the head of the guitar says "SPS Design", and the sticker inside the body says "SPS Design" in big letters, and "Kaman Music" in tiny letters at the bottom of the sticker. The only thing that makes me believe it is an authentic ovation is a much smaller sticker inside the body that says "Ovation" with a series of numbers (serial number?).
So my questions are: anyone heard of "SPS Design", and does anyone have a phone number or email address for Kaman where I might ask them if they know anything about my guitar?
Please email me if you’ve got answers to my questions. Thanks.

      1. No serial number
        CC Hassell

I have an Ovation 12-String, Model 1866, according to the label inside. But there is no serial number to be found anywhere inside or outside on the the guitar. Suggestions?

      2. I’m not sure about fake ovations. I recently bought a Chinese ovation celebrity and I am more than pleased. I live in Beijing and haven’t seen a store for the fake ones. Maybe on Tabao website or maybe they are sellin them all to the USA on their sites….

      3. I have one like that as
        Anonymous

I have one like that as well.
Purchased it from a coworker who worked in the building next to Ovation in New Hartford, CT.
When I purchased mine, I was told that mine was a prototype made in Mexico.
It was something like 1 of 6 or 10,.
I can’t quite remember the exact number, but it was a small amount.

        1. SPS Design
          Tom Peterson

I contacted Ovation customer service about my SPS Design by Ovation.
          This is their reply:
We did a small run of these not sure how many. If you post this question on the Ovation fan club site they might know,

    Jeff Klajbor

I recently bought – then returned an Ovation 1866 Legend 12 string. The guitar was caving in at the bridge and there were cracks on each side of the bridge. It looked like too much tension. Questions…
What is the recomended tuning for 12 strings? standard tuning or 2 steps below?
Can any 12 strings have standard tuning?
Is this common with Ovations? I saw 1 other just like it in the store, not as bad but enough to make me wonder about Ovations.
    Please reply.

To your last question. Alot of ovations do crack on top this is due to humidity problems and the simple fact that the top of the guitar is usally the only wood on it. Even the necks are usually metal composite. Mind you this makes for great out door playing since tempature does not affect the man made materials as much as wood.

    1. Re: GTX 36 Les Paul Copy, woods and pickups?
      Wayne

Intrestingly, I saw my first GTX36 last night in a guitar store. It was ebony, with gold hardware, full
3-ply binding and jumbo frets, MOP block inlays, asking price of $229, used. It felt solid; with a thicker
body than a std LP, but not quite as heavy. I’ve been looking today to find what kind of woods and
pickups (specs) were used in it’s construction.

      Anyone know?

Hey i now have a great guitar. I have a 1991 GTX Les Paul. It is really cool. They gave it to me for $300. They put in 2 new humbucker gold pickup and a whole new everything except the body. They gave me a great deal. It should be around $400.

      1. Re: GTX 36 Les Paul Copy

        Great!
i recently found a 36 for $9 (the hardcase was $10!!!) at a market in tasmania, australia.
I am wondering if anyone knows where i can get a bridge and tailpiece for it, as they are a couple of millimetres wider than standard gibson sizes. I would rather not chop holes in it, but if i have to…

it had been dropped from a great height and left in a shed for 20 years, but, when sanding it all back, i found it to only be superficially wounded. No major fractures at all!
and the wood on the back is bloody beautiful! I am going to put a clear gloss on it to show it off.
Anyway, so nice to chat, look forward to hearing from someone who knows.

I recently aquired a gtx 36. Gold top less paul copy.
The finish had been removed from the back or the guitar.
It appears to be a solid mahogany body with a maple cap.
I,ve been playing over 30 yrs and have owned a couple of
les pauls.A few nights ago, I was at a friend,s house. He
has a les paul classic, and the gtx compared very well.
Very high quality workmanship. Country of origin had been
removed, but I think it is Korean. Pick-ups had been replaced with Dimarzios. Tuning keys replaced with Grovers.
As far as value, that’s subjective. Mine will save me the
money of buying a Gibson, so it’s "value" is about $1000.00. If it helps me write songs differently than my
        strats, it’s "value" is priceless.

Recently I have been researching the GTX models to find that Gibson and Kamar(the maker) got in a copyright battle. In the end GTX lost rights to produce gibson guitars. That was in the 70’s. I have seen several GTX 36 selling for $700 to $1000

I recently purchased an Adamas SMT round hole guitar. It has a "hand rubbed urethane oil" finish on the neck back. I’m used to a "gloss" neck finish (had that on a previous Ovation) and want to know if there is some product I could use to make the grainy, slow neck on the Adamas feel smoother and faster. I know the manual recommends Trewax and other paste waxes but I don’t think this would get the effect I’m looking for.

The Matrix model was part of the Ovation line in the early 1980’s, but the project was not successful for a variety of reasons, and was discontinued in 1984-1985.  We do not know the exact value, but chances are that it would not be worth a tremendous amount since it was a rather inexpensive guitar to begin with, and we do not know of any collector’s market for that model.

        Erroll

I have that same guitar..Mine is serial #009846. Blonde, with black and white binding and black and white decorative plastic trim around the soundhole. Bought it at a garage sale many years back for $40… It needed work: I made a new bridge for it, polished the frets, replaced the tuners, installed a nice set of bronze wound strings, and a neckstrap, and I love it! Great rich tone and nice action. I use it as a kick-around guitar to figure out tunes and just relax with. Probably not worth too much: I find that in the stuffy world of guitar collecting, only the "upscale" brands are desirable, like Gibson, Martin and D’Aquisto. Everything else is considered second-rate. It’s all just hype, and doesn’t mean other brands aren’t playable and fun. At any rate, try to find an American-made folk guitar of this quality today for $100 or less! Impossible. Everything now is made in Korea or Taiwan. Your post was from a few years ago– Hopefully you’re still enjoying your Matrix, as I am!

I contacted Kaman music, this was their reply:
The GTX model AR22TR dates back to 1990 when it retailed for $369.50 USD in the standard black, white, red, blue, gray and pink finishes. The information available is very limited, here’s what we have:

Double cutaway body style, reverse headstock design, Canadian Maple neck, rosewood fingerboard with mountain-style inlays, 2 pickups, Ping machines, black hardware and KMD locking nut with fine tuning tremolo system. The pickups are Kaman branded; neck position is an XK110 covered single coil and bridge position is an XK120 high-output double-coil pickup. They are controlled by a 3-way switch, a coil tap switch for bridge humbucker and master volume and tone controls.

Special finishes included crackle, flame, skull over flame, white splatter on black, blue lightning on black, and snakeskin on ivory and retailed slightly higher at $399.50 USD.

Like most everyone else i have a GTX-22. I’ve looked all over for any info but i can’t find any. Mine is black with a lightning type finish. Almost looked like a cracked kinda finfish with gold glitter filling in the cracks.

      1. I have the same exact guitar with the lightning pattern, glod glitter finish and all. Does yours have the Floyd Rose TRS-401 clamp on it too? I heard from my uncle who gave it to me that it was really old and could be worth a lot of money. When did you buy it? I have a couple GTX 33s that are in need of refinishing. For sale I have a very nice near mint GTX 33 which is the upper end model I would sell if you are interested. It is original finish, kind of a magenta / jade, etc. swirl look and I have only seen a couple of this type color ever. It now has installed top of the line upgrade Seymour Duncan s pickups Pearly Gates, SSL-1 middle and Hot rails neck. Set up precision done too. 1. Info on the Kaman GTX guitars
        Jeff Stockton

Here is what I learned about the Kaman GTX guitars; Please correct me if i am mistaken but i have done some research. These were made in the 80s in the hair band days and were excellent shredders. Ironically the bodies were I believe particle board composite and not solid wood but doesn’t matter, they sound and play great. The entry level is the GTX 22 standard tremelo, then the GTX 23 locking Floyd lower end tremelo then the much better GTX 33 which had the better Floyd patent system and in my opinion played better and would hold tune better too. I love these guitars and I have 5 GTX guitars. I play a black Lightning bolt finish guitar, it has a different Ibanez Floyd Trem and Seymour Duncan upgrade pickups. I also have a red / blue crackle finish GTX 23 with same pickups and stays in tune unlike some 23’s and plays great. I have a couple GTX 33s that are in need of refinishing. For sale I have a very nice near mint GTX 33 which is the upper end model. It is original finish, kind of a magenta / jade, etc. swirl look and I have only seen a couple of this type color ever. All three pickups were upgraded to Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates bridge, SSL-1 middle and Hot rails neck. Push / pull coil taps for both humbuckers. Set up precision done. I can sell it like it is or re-install factory original pickups however the upgrades sound so much better. Price would depend on which way you decided to go. Contact me if interested.

It also has a emg active pickup on it that also came with the guitar. (I think ) I bought the guitar in a pawn shop and I would like to know more about it. It’s really strange because I have asked people in guitar stores and no one has ever heard of it. They didn’t even know that Applause made solid body electric guitars so you are my last hope . please help me out

      1. : I also have a Kaman GTX Mine is a GTX 23 it’s almost 12 years old. I can tell you that none of the GTX’s came stock with the Floyd Rose Trem or Lock nor are the EMG Active Pickups original. They actually had fairly generic parts when the guitars came out. There is a music store in Woodward, Oklahoma, USA called Gardner Music 1-580-256-8482. They still had some in stock a few months ago and they may be able to give you a spec sheet on the GTX 22 and a replacement parts list. I hope this helps.:

        1. I just bought a GTX23 and I was wondering if It actualy came stock with a crackel finish, cause mine has a black and red finish, I was also wondering if it had a set of Xk-110 pickups, I don’t know what brand

Yeah I have that same guitar. I bought mine new and it came black with red speckles. The pickups were (2) xk-110 and (1) xk-120. It also came with lock nuts. Hope this helps,

Hi, i also have a gtx 22 and got it at a pawn shop, for $110. i just want to know some more about it. My guitar is candy apple red. Someone replaced the floyd rose with a generic strat whammy. They also altered the wiring. It still sounds okay, but at half its true potential. It is like a bird that got its wings cut so it could not fly very far. I wish I could get a wiring diagram, otherwise I’ll have to find another one to compare notes with. They were quite a guitar in their day with lots of different tones similar to the late 80’s early 90’s Charvels. I suspect it may have an on board parametric equalizer built into one of the tone knobs. One tone knob is a push pull type.

          2. Re: GTX 23
            Trei

: The XK-110 (single coil) and XK-210 (double coil) pickups were stock for the whole GTX line. It has been assumed by several guitar repair shops around where I live that the pickups were made in house by Kaman and only available for the GTX model guitars. I got an extra set of pickups in case I ever need them from a messed up guitar that was a theft recovery.

The crackel finish was also stock, but it was not the only finish available. They produced several wild designs. Zebra Stripes, VanHalen style stripes, all in varying colors. The series on each paint job was also very limited. The guitar I have is a custom setup, the neck is very slim and made of maple with no finish. My paint job is similar to yours except that it is red, blue, black and purple.

I just bought a Series 10 guitar. Series 10 were made by Bently. It has the body of a super strat/Ibanez SG series. This is my second Series 10. It is black with lime green racing stripes down the body. It has black XK-110 pick-ups in it. One humbucker and two single coils. This discussion caught my eye because I do not know if the guitar came like this or if someone before me put these custom pickups in it. Thanks

:I have a GTX 23 too. It has the black-red finish and the xk110 pickups. There are only few scratches on the body. One screw was replaced. it is now silver, instead of black… if have to replace it again. I need a new bridge also. But I don’t know how to get spare parts…

            it’s a wonderfull thing…

if someone is interested in my guitar he can mail me. i need money and so it is possibly that i sell it at ebay…

Well, to add to this discussion some years later, I bought a body: GTX 22 By Applause from Ebay. Electronics work. X110 S/C Neck; X120 Bridge H/B. 1 Master Vol. 2 Tones. Coil split. 3 way selector. Looks like a replacement; not factory stock/issued. Still works fine. Missing a fine tuner on the low E. Will replace with a suitable type. Or might get one of them EVH Drop D Tuna setup ones. The Neck (!!**)! Measurements are not universal. To my specs: 2 2/16. Slightly smaller in the neck pocket. BEWARE! Carefully measure; I have been going thru necks to find the exact correct measurement. Trial n Error!! Should be fine after I get it up/running. Fun lil’ project. These guitars I do remember in the 80’s, along w/ the Stinger by Martin ones, the Series 10 ones, etc…similiar. They went out of vogue after the 80’s just like the 60’s type E/G. Can find these types on occasion in most random Pawn Shops for little money. Get one and mod it, have some fun. Glad to see some here doing the homework and relaying info to us. Thanks!!

So, 2 yrs later, following up. FINALLY found that fine tuner this month, from an Ebay seller. 6th tuner in line. And put a First Act neck on. 22 frets, rswood/maple. Chrome tuners, low end cheapos, but they work. ME 4037 or something is the model. DOES FIT! Like previously wrote, measurements are 2 2/16th rather than the std 3/16th. So, this 1st act is a little thinner and able to use. Fun guitar to play overall. And while obviously NOT top o the line, still, I’d gig with it at a beer pub/low end gig w/ out having to worry about damage. Little investment, lots of enjoyment! THX!!

I have the same guitar (w/KMD tremolo) that is also missing a fine tuner (for high E string). Haven’t been able to find one and was hoping you might point me in the right direction. Cool guitar but not worth much w/o that tuner 🙂 Thanks.

This was my frist electric guitar and I recently got one used for a great price. I would like to know the history of Memphis les pauls. they have a very cool feel and sound.

I’ve got a Memphis Les Paul copy (copy of the LP Studio – black with thrru neck). Over time I have added gold hardware and a bigsby. It is great and I have had it and played it regularly for the last 6 years, and have used it in the studio and for live shows. I have sold two Gibson Les Pauls and a Gibson ES335 since buying this one, and prefer the Memphis sound to those. My new Gibson LP Classic 1960 is comparable in quality, but I wouldn’t say better. Has anyone got a decent priced thru-neck Memphis LP in good shape for sale?

I have just recently gotten a memphis les paul double cut away for free from a guy who found it and didn’t want it. and think that it is one of the best guitars i have ever played on.

          K.T.

I have got 2 memphis set neck les paul copies, there a hybrid between a standard and a custom, it has the bosy of a standard les paul, and a fat 50’s custom style neck with block inlays you normally find on custom les pauls, I paid 200.00 for each one and they are way worth it, Both are a about 9.2 to a 9.5 on a scale of 1-10. One is black and it has the original humbuckers, and the other has a cherry sunburst with a dimarzio dhp195, they both have great tones, I would never pay for an overpriced gibson, I have played on my freind coections of classics and standards, and tone wise we both agreed my memphis had better tones on recordings. I love these guitars

: I have had several Memphis Guitars: a Les Paul double cut away, a Les Paul Standard, a Strat, and A Telecaster (I added chrome humbuckers), They made good copies of classic guitars.

Hello, I live in Manila and I am trying to determine the value of my Ovation guitar. It is an acoustic which I bought about 15 to 20
years ago. The model number is listed on an Ovation identification sticker right inside the hole and it says Model # 1112. Then on another
smaller sticker above that one closer to the neck inside the guitar is the serial # 206622. Is there anyway to get a quick guess
on the value of this instrument.

    Thank You

Does your Ovation 206622 have a composite neck (synthetic not wood)?
I have a model # 1132 Ovation Matrix S/N 204733 and an Applause S/N 063204 and both of them have composite necks. My other two Ovations have wooden necks.

I paid $75.00 each for the composite neck guitars and wouldn’t sell them for anything because I enjoy the profile of the neck and the excellent action. One I bought in a pawn shop in Pheonix, AZ a few years ago and the other at a guitar show in Pittsburgh, PA a few months later, and I’m always looking for another one.

Its a good well made bass that sets up well, has excellent internation and warm tone. Difficult for pulling strings due to close proximity of the pick up by the neck. It has a graphite inlay through the neck and has excellent sustain. I paid £450 (UK POUNDS) for mine and I am really plesaed with it.

I have a CC148 and it’s an amazing instrument. However, the bridge saddle cracked in half and apparently this is a discontinued model and I’m having a hell of a time finding a replacement bridge saddle. Overall though, I’d highly recomend it. I own three Ovations and this model is by far one of the best they make.

I just purchased a Ovation Celebrity from someone on e-bay. They did not know the model and took the sticker out of it so they could not find serial #. I sent a picture of it to Ovation Customer Service on their web site…they think it is a cc-148. Could you look at the pic and tell me what you think. Seems the inlaid rosette is what is in question. But they say the cc-148 is the only mid=bowl Celebrity they made. Did you ever get your’s fixed?
If you would be so kind to look at mine…log onto e-bay, and in the item # put 2530637677. Your help is appreciated. Thanks
