  1. Ovation 1868 cracked top
    Jim

Unfortunately, one of my kids fell on my 1868 while it was laying in its case with the lid open. The kid is fine, but the guitar sustained major damage. It now has a crack on the top that runs from the bridge up towards the cutaway stopping about 5mm short of the epaulet. I guess it’s about three inches long. Can something like this be successfully repaired? I live about three hours from the factory and am thinking about making a visit for an evaluation.

    Thanks,
    Jim

I drove up to the factory and met the repair department service manager, it was worth the trip. They have some great folks working there. It was reassuring to meet someone who is going to have some part in the repair of my guitar. I had a chance to see the ‘Q’, man that thing is cool looking.

          : 10/25/04 Forgot the other questions;
: Mahogany tops (I believe) were 2-piece or laminated… the higher models were mostly solid spruce/laminated spruce.
: F349 vintage, from looking at the picture on above site, would probably be 1977-78. This was the "Martin Lawsuit" headstock, when Takamine managed to make a Takamine logo that looked like "CF Martin" from a distance; The F360 dreadnaughts were basically exact D-28 copies that often sounded better than Martins, F370’s essentially D-35’s… RESPEK, EdW.

I own a 1982 F349 that I bought new. It has a what appears to be a 3 layer laminated top that looks strikingly like the luan mahahony underlayment that you can buy at the local lumber yard. I adore this guitar and put a Barcus-Berry insider in it sometime in the mid 80’s. It sounds better every year. Frankly, I would not sell it for a thousand dollars…..

  2. Ovation Ultra Series
    Ed Schwacke

Anyone have a clue where I could pick-up the volume control and transducer for my 1982 Ovation Ultra series guitar. Pickup is in fine condition but the battery pack and volume/tone control is shot. The assembly includes volume control/tone, battery pack, and 1/4" phone plug for the guitar cord to amplifier.

Do you still have the Sonex? I used to own a Silver one. I was young and poor and was forced to sell it to make a car payment …. way back in 1983.

I would love to own one again. Mostly for nostalgia’s sake.
The Sonex was made of a composite body that Gibson was experimenting with. They were nice guitars for the money back in the day. I think I paid somewhere around $350 for mine brand new.

Anyway, Let me know if you still have and would like to sell yours.

      Thanks,

      Cleve

i recently picked up a sonex 180 deluxe as well for $300. mine was made in 1982. they were only manufactured from 80-84, based on what ive been able to find, and ive seen prices anywhere from 250-400+ dollars. i really like mine, its got a nice tone and some character. you can tell the year of your guitar by looking at the first and fifth digits of the serial #.

A ’80 refinished Sonex-180 Standard costs 350 bucks used in a local guitar store here in Helsinki, Finland. Used guitars usually cost almost twice as much in Finland as in USA.

    4. GTXs are old Hamers made from 85 to 95. There usually equipped with less than decent hardware (the floyd copy is very weak and needs replacing within a few years). The Humbucking pickup is excellent for distortion. Singles do well for clean, but are absolutely horrid for gain, however, due to their ungodly microphonics.

They cost about 300-500 when they were new. The faulty hardware is made up for by the excellent neck and cool finish. Mines black with heavy white on it too :)Ive seen marble grey ones too. I use a gtx 33 as my main axe mostly cos people dont know what gtx is and they dig the finish. Im gonna swap out the singles for some decent pickups and i just had the floyd copy replaced with a real one.

This Gibson Les Paul Sonex is worth around $450.00 but mine is worth more to me. I like my Sonex and I paid $125.00 and put some work into it. Enjoy it and don’t take less than $350 for it

These seem to be a very limited production. Mine has aged beautifully (no cracks at all), and has become my favorite instrument. VERY full tone (due to large body?), sounds great with Martin strings, and can dazzle a room. I think they are under-valued.

I also have an Ovation Anniversary, but I like the slightly wider fretboard and deeper tone on the 1639.

            Walt T

I bought this one from a local guy a couple of years ago for $120. Mine is a 1981, natural finish has no cracks. As said previously by someone else, I really like the tone (boomy bass). Only problem mine has is that the action is quite high.
I see no problems with the bridge or soundboard, the urelite neck looks straight to me. I had the area where the pickup sits in the bridge dremmeled a little to lower the saddle, but the action is still too high. Anybody have any idea what else I could do to lower the action? Right now, I either leave it tuned down a whole step or tune it to open D so it is playable tuned that way.

              1. 1639 update
                Walt T.

Wow, found this thread again five years later! Anyway, back in 2016 I brought my 1639 mentioned above to the New Hartford factory. They said it needed a neck reset so I had them do it (cost around $200.00). To make a long story short, they did the neck reset but also replaced the bridge and put in a new piezo pickup (Thanks Mr. Budny and Co.). They told me that I now have the best 1639 that exists on the planet. It really is great now and I love it. Action is low, plays and sounds great.

          3. Ovation Balladeer Special 1639
            Hiro Satoh

I bought a used Ovation 1639 (“Balladeer Special”) in the early 90’s. Not a lot of information about this guitar out there, but what I was able to find is that these were a limited run model made in the USA 1980-1982, with a solid spruce top, foam-filled aluminum neck and peghead (from Asian suppliers), rosewood fretboard and bridge, has very deep bowl, and came with a piezo pickup with 6 string sensors. It cost $525 brand new ’81-’82. I paid $400 in 1991 with the original Ovation hardshell case.

Mine is in excellent condition with a beautiful glossy natural finish which has aged beautifully, with some wear on the frets. It has a narrower than typical neck, and plays very well with low action. One of the advantages I found with this guitar, is that the neck is not affected by humidity and heat. I’ve used it for outdoor gigs on hot humid summer days, when I knew my other guitars would cause tuning and intonation issues onstage. I’ve even taken this on camping trips in the summer months.

Acoustically, this deep-bowl guitar has that punchy chest-thumping boomy bass that I like, and can be as loud you want when playing rhythm guitar. The highs are weak, in my opinion, especially when using medium gauge 80/20 strings. It doesn’t have as much separation between the midrange and high notes. So I use it mostly for playing a loud driving rhythm with accentuated bass notes. I haven’t tried using phosphor bronze strings because I use it specifically for the bass-heavy rhythm parts. (This has more bass than my Martin HD35.)

Plugged in, this guitar has only been problematic for me. I don’t know what model pickup/preamp series this is, but it has only a volume control. No EQ, feedback control, or tuner. The few times I’ve played this plugged in on stage, I found this to be very prone to feedback, with a muddy bass-midrange which can be corrected with an outboard multi-frequency EQ like Fishman’s Pro-EQ. Surprisingly, the high notes separate nicely when plugged in, the opposite from when it’s played unplugged. I think it’s the deep bowl and the preset preamp, as maybe that same preamp is used on mid-bowl and shallow-bowl models (?). This is best played acoustically, especially outdoors where the lows typically tend to dissipate into thin-air.

All in all, I like this guitar for the boomy low-end response. But would not use it for any lead riffs in the higher registers. And I would not use it plugged in.

            1. I bought a 1639 about five
              Anonymous

I bought a 1639 about five years ago for $110 off craigslist. The action was quite high and needed a neck reset. I used it only in open D tuning and used light strings. Because I liked boomy bass tone it has, I took a chance and paid $200 for the neck reset by the friendly guys at the Ovation factory in New Hartford. It plays great now and I think it sounds good plugged in. I agree that it is easily prone to feedback, but has very much reduced feedback when plugged into my boss harmonist pedal for whatever reason,l.

: I have 2 Takamine guitars a G330 s/n83090102 and aF349 s/n 79101424 can any one tell me what year and where they were made.

According to the online information I’ve seen, your G330 was made in September, 1983, while your F349 was made in October 1979. Both should be Japanese made. On most Takamines, the year of manufacture is shown in the first two digits, after which the next two digits indicate the month. The last four digits are apparently the actual production numbers (but I don’t know if they refer to the total for the year or for the month).

  11. I’m looking at purchasing my son a new Ovation. I found one that was identified as a CS247. It is a 6 string. Emerald green and fades to black and has the multiple holes. I cannot find this model anywhere on the internet. Is it possible it’s mislabeld? If so, is the price of $639.00 still reasonable.

    Thanks!

    1. Rob:
Doubt if you are still following this over a month after your positing, but I just found this site whien trying to find answers to similar query as yours. I am looking at a CC247 (rather that your CS247) supposedly made in 1997. I spoke with a fellow named Adam at Kanman Music Corp (Tel 860 509 8888)who told me that the CC247 is similar to the current CS257 model, except that it has a mid depth bowl rather than the CS257’s shallow bowl. 6 strings. OP24+ electronics.
      Hope this helps.

  12. 12-string Adamas Guitar with warped neck
    David Yoong

I have a 12-string Ovation Adamas Acoustic Guitar (purchased in 1997). The neck has been found warped since April, 1998, resulting in the strings passing the fretboard at a higher plane (or greater distance) than they should, hence making playing very difficult and uncomfortable. The local dealer in Malaysia told me that they cannot repair it. Please advise what I should do to restore the guitar to its original condition. Is it still covered under any warranty terms? Also please verify whether it is true (as the local dealer is telling me now) to always tune a 12-string guitar to C# instead of E to reduce tension on the neck? Your advice would be highly appreciated. Thanks in anticipation.

    1. Re: 12-string Adamas Guitar with warped neck

I to have the same guitar (1688 right?) And yes, it is advisable to tune your string two steps dpon (D-D) because of the humidity in the far east. But most of all, you should take it to a professional guitar luthier to find out what you can do about it.
At the mean time, watch out for the change of temperature and humidity, OK?

      All the best

I’ve sent two different Adamas guitars back to Kaman to their repair department and had them fixed. 1 had a complete replacement of the graphite top, the other had the neck reset. They do good work and can even replace the neck if needed. Contact Kim Keller at Kaman.

: Sounds like maybe a GTX55 bass, (made in the late 80’s) under the Kaman name, which was
stamped into the neckplate. Maple/rosewood bolt-on neck w/ sharkfin inlays, 34" scale, 24 frets.
Find a neck that fits that scale and pocket on the body and bolt it in.
        Kaman likely could make one.
