Martin Guitar

The Martin Guitar Company has, through the years, managed to survive with each succeeding generation from C. F. Martin, Sr.’s Stauffer influenced creations of the 1830s to recent developments introduced by C. F. Martin IV. Continuous operation under family management is a feat bordering on the remarkable, reflecting six generations of dedication to the guitarmaker’s craft. In or out of the music industry, C. F. Martin has few rivals for sheer staying power.

Throughout its colorful history, the company has adapted successfully to continual changes in product design, distribution systems, and manufacturing methods. In spite of the many changes, C. F. Martin has never veered away from its initial commitment to quality. The concern for producing the finest instruments possible in 1833 is especially evident today at Martin’s expanded facility in Nazareth, Pennsylvania.

  1. Oh man I just picked up a Stinger ST4 guitar for $40. It has some wear and a dirty switch but a little care will get this thing close to good condition. What I want to know is what this guitar is? I can’t seem to find anything about it. Supposedly its a Martin but can’t find serial numbers to match in their database. I looked on other sites and no one seems to be able to confirm where this came from and what it is actually worth. Hopefully someone can clear it up for me.

Hello, I am trying to find a value on my guitar which was left to me when my aunt died. She and my dad bought it new in 1969. It’s serial number is 245222, martin tells me it is 1 of 60 built in 1969 and it is in 9 to 9.5 condition (with some minor peeling to the base of the pick guard and a tiny crack below that). It’s case is a period case, no name on it. I want to place a good ins. value on it and am thinking about selling it. Can you help me please. Jay Ball 1706.313.5525/706.277.4699

  4. Martin XPX-TS/ Les Paul copy electirc guitar
    Israel

HELP?? I have put a deposit on a Martin XPX-TS electric guitar that looks to be in near perfect condition. Appearance wise it is almost identical to a Gibson Les Paul. It has (apparently) a solid mahoaony body and flamed maple top. The fretboard is rosewood and has the same shape inlays as on a Les Paul. The only cosmetic difference from a Les Paul is that headstock is shaped like a Jackson (slash?), This guitar has a set neck and no tremolo. No serial number to be seen on the outside. Cannot see any country of origin anywhere. It really looks just like a Les Paul except for the headstock. Does anyone know anything about this guitar? Please contact me if you know anything?

Martin manufactured only 208 of these 7/8 size D-28s, between 1979 and 1994. They are no longer in production and are becoming more valuable both as collector’s items and as beautiful sounding instruments.

If you have an ST4 then it was made in 1994 or so I’ve seen on some websites. I have one myself that Ibought brand new in 1994. They are very good guitars & very much the Fender Start’s equal. They have great sound.

Here is what Martin Co sent Me:
Thank you for contacting us. Martin did not keep record of the

serial numbers on the Stinger Series, therefore, the history on

this series is very limited. Here is the information that I have available. In November, 1985 Martin introduced the Stinger Series solid body electric guitars. Made in Korea, these guitars became widely accepted in a short period of time. Stinger, like Sigma, was brought into the Martin factory, inspected, and set up by C. F. Martin personnel. They were available in a variety of popular styles.

The ST-2 is a lead guitar. Our records are very limited, however I believe this model has an Indian Ash body and Maple neck. The original cost was $186.00.

      Thank you for your inquiry!

I bought my Martin D-25K brand new in November of 1982 for $1200.00. I still have it and am proud to say it looks brand new still, even though I’ve played the heck out of it.

I just bough a 1980 D-25K from Elderly Instruments. I paid $1,400.00 for it in "excellent" condition. There is also one for sale here:
http://www.kenguitars.com/stockphotoeg/martinphoto/m0094eg.html The asking price for this one is $2,700+ However, this
guitar is in Japan where you will pay more.

There were only about 900 d-25k’s built, and very few photos exist. I have the 1980 Martin catalog and it doesn’rt even show the
        25K – the 37K is shown.

I know quite a bit about this particular guitar having talked with George Gruhn about it and read all
the available literature in the various Martin history books.

In EXCELLENT condition – all original – a proce range of $1,400 – $1,600 is appropriate. By the way, if yours does not have black end
pins with white dot they’re not origina!!

I just bought a 1970 D20-12 (265801) in terrific condition from Guitarville in Shoreline, WA (North Seattle) for $799.00. Back in 1978 I found one in Portland for $500.00 and loved it but didn’t have the money at the time. After 25 years I was surprised to find another for only 300 bucks more. Perhaps 12 string guitars haven’t been able to keep up with the ridiculous price increases that vintage 6 strings have undergone. The D 20-12 came with a hard shell case and a Martin thinline PU installed. It is beautiful guitar. Bright but rich and full. Plays like a dream. Patric

I’m interested to know does Martin still make this particular model, it seems uncommon to find maple body martins these days, the serial number is 548590, i purchased the guitar secondhand for an amazingly good price, what and i am trying to find out is, is there somebody who could tell what its value would be and how old it might be. Thanks Laurie.

    1. Re: re: C. F. Martin J65 "maple"
      Phil P.

      Laurie —
I can answer some of your questions. I, too, have a Martin J65 which I purchased new. My serial # is 531198, which make is a 1993. According to the card that came with it, the last Martin serial # of 1993 was 535223 and the last # of 1994 was 551,696, which makes yours a 1994 model.
In terms of price, the original list was about $2700, but it was widely sold for about $1900-$2000. Within the past few years, I’ve seen one on sale (new) for about $1500 – but they are incrasingly hard to find because they have been out of production for several years.
For some reason, maple guitars were never big sellers for Martin and they took them out of standard production in the mid-1990s. Now, Martin only makes maple guitars through its "custom shop" … so I am optimistic that, over time, this model should appreciate in value.
      Hope that helps.

      — Phil

p.s. — Regardless of value, it’s a great looking and great sounding guitar!

      1. Re: re: C. F. Martin J65 "maple"
        Mike Elwood

They are indeed great sounding guitars.
I had a special order on off made for me back in 85 during the second year of production. I had the good fortune of meeting CF Martin Sr. before he died, and he hooked me up with a old dude in the custom shop named Les Wagener. Les handpicked a neck from the J65 production line and also handpicked the back and side wood (for exceptional flame) after Frank (CF) called him and greased the wheels for the custom order.

IT has no model number and says " Custom" with a Custom shop one-off serial #.
        Additional mods included.
        Pre war X bracing
        Scalloped bracing.
Tortoise shell binding on body and neck
        Ebony fingerboard
D45 headstock and custom abalone headstock inlay. (as opposed to the production Mother of Toilet seat or gold inked logo)
Super nasty flamed maple very thin (like a flamenco guitar) and brazilian rosewood stripe with herringbone mosaic pattern. It’s real light and LOUD.

all this took 8 months to build and I paid $850……back in 1984.Couldn’t touch that now….

Hey! I know how you feel…I recently bought one for 70 dollars! Man…I thought it would be worth a lot more and I think it’s worth more than some Fender Strats! Anyways, mines a 1977 Martin Stinger and it plays great..what color is yours? you can tell the age by the color..mine’s a grey-blue color..its beautiful. But, if u get more information on our beautiful Martin Stingers e-mail me!! Emily

1911 made from 1967 through 1994 (I think, If I hear back from you, I’ll check for sure) I’ve had mine since new (1969). Worth around $2500. Care: just wipe with a damp, clean, cotton cloth. Avoid cleaners/waxes too often.

  28. guitar repair
    J.R. Rand

I purchased a HD-28 new in about 1992. A couple of months ago about a six-inch area of the top binding came loose.
I simply applied a little glue, held it down with rubber bands and it was fine. Now, however, about a 12 inch portion
of the binding on the back has come loose. Should I consider this a major problem? Is it covered under warranty?
If not and I send it to Martin for repair, what would be the cost of putting new binding on the guitar?

How can I find the exact year this guitar was made?

I have a 1991 issue of Guitar For The Practicing Musician w/ Warren DiMartini on the cover and there is an ad for the Stinger. It has a black finish with a grey crackle finish, Super Strat body, basic Strat pickup configuration, Black hardware, basic Strat type trem, and a maple 22 fret neck. Thats all i can see on the picture in the ad. I saw the pic and started looking for a used one for sale and found this site. Hope i helped!

          I have a stinger ST4 electric guitar. Its a 22 fret guitar it’s like a fat strat.
I did not know that this was a copy of a strat utill
          I got it.
I know it will never be much in value couse it’s an
          import
But If you took the Stinger neck off of it and put a
Fender Strat Neck on it you will think it is a Fender.
It has a 5 position swith LIKE A STRAT.
I took it home and plugged it in and played it and
          IT PLAYED LIKE A DREAM!!!
I would NOT trade it for an american strat it is THAT GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!
All that I can tell of the stinger is that the neck is not like a strat.
It has the CLASSIC STRAT SOUND!!!!!!!
          It’s A cream Pearl colar.
I swear I have never played a better SOUNDING COPY OF A STRAT IN MY DAYS!!!!!
It is made in the late 70’s and it is in MINT condition.

I’ve been playing my Stinger for 8 years, it was my first guitar, and it is my only guitar (till next week, but the stinger will always be my favorite). I learned everything from metal to punk to blues on it and it handles everything so sweetly. I can take pictures of it if you want and send em, plus the info on it, whatever. Just send me an email

I have an SSX Stinger sitting here in front of me, I have had it for quite a while and might still have the documentation that I got with it. It is my 2nd quitar, my first was a Fender Jazzmaster that I got from (you won’t believe me) Joe Perry back in the days when he played in his garage when he lived in Hinsdale, Ma. But getting back to the Stinger, very good action and if you tweak the neck just right it sounds like the Strat it is designed after. I love it. I can’t play to good anymore due to arthritis. If anyone would like to purchase it just e-mail. Let life be good to ya all…..

        Anonymous

If any of you have a working Stinger SSX-10, I would appreciate a picture of the electronics. I’m a tech and I’m trying to piece together one that a customer took apart 27 years ago. There’s pieces missing and the wiring was not in tact. There isn’t a diagram or pictures to go off of anywhere.

I have a Godin I use primarily and needed a back-up for string breaks and picked up a used, somewhat beat-up ‘Stinger’. Well, I luv this guitar !!
Plays easily, sounds very good through my Blackstar HT5r and I couldn’t be happier.

      3. Martin Stinger Info
        Nate

The Stinger was available from 1985 and 1991. They were manufactured in South Korea and set up in the USA by Martin. They came in a wide variety of options and levels. Most were made of particle board and had terrible electronics, but the SSX was the top of the line. It had an ash body, maple top, Grover tuners, AMAZING pickups, switches, and pots, and custom bursts and paintjobs. The SSX retailed for $308 in 1988, equivalent to over $650 today so you can compare them to a Fender Player Series. I have an SSX and it’s amazing, great sustain, great tone, the single coil pickups are wound to about 8.5 which is perfect for blues and rockabilly, great trem system, solid bone nut.
