I know Yamaha U.S.A doesn’t carry the SG 2000 or 3000 series anymore, but Yamaha Japan still does. I’m thinking of ordering an SG 3000 directly from Japan. Does anyone know whether the current SG 3000 is up to the standards that I read a lot of SG fans rave about? In particular do they have that extra slab of brass under the bridge? How do the pick-ups compare to the classic SG’s from the 70’s? What are the best pick-ups for a jazzier/ warm tone? Thanks.

I suppose I am lucky but I never knew. A few yearas ago i FOUND a Yamaha FG-180 on the street!! Somebody chucked it out and I thought: Oooh…..what a waste to throw a guitar in the trash!
That was 16 years ago. But only today was I told they are actualy sought after. Can anyone tell me what they are worth?

Mine has the Autographs of both Indigo Girls on it with an Indigo Girls sticker.(sorry folks, I did not know it was an exclusive guitar and I was 14 at the time:o) so I suppose that kills some of the value.

Someone please send me some mail and help me out. I *might* want to sell it.

I believe they were made in the early 1980′ Republic of China, made in Taiwan. My brother purchased one used, inexpensive, which I now own. They have a great tone and a rich bass. Are you looking to buy one? Mine does not have a serial # on it only the Yamaha Mfg. sticker inside which states, ~Yamaha FG-165S-1~ .

Your Yamaha FG 165S was manufactured in 1976. The original MSRP was $199.50. The top is made of solid spruce, the back and sides are Nato. The Neck is Nato, fingerboard is Indian Rosewood, and the finish is Red Sunburst..Hope this helps!

I bought mine in May of 1977 and it still sounds absolutely awesome!I paid $250.00 for it then and I still have trouble finding any accoustic that I enjoy as much as this guitar!

My dad bought this guitar brand new in 1976 from Gordie Brandt’s music store in Saskatoon for my mom’s birthday. I inherited (stole) it in the late 80’s and is the only acoustic that I have ever played or would want to. It sounds awesome and looks as good now as when new. My buddy complains that the action is too high but it’s what I’m used to. I think dad paid around 200$ back then. I have heard that it’s a special edition anniversary issue but can’t confirm that. I plan on keeping this one forever.

I have owned this guitar since 1979.Decorative pickguard. Does any one else have one and is it awsome sounding, too? What would they be worth these days?

Here’s some more information on this guitar also I was told that this guitar is very rare and was made by Gibson for Yamaha back in the 70’s when they were trying to break inot the music business:

      http://www.progressiveears.com/frippbook/ch10.htm
Fripp teaches that there is one true ideal tone color for the acoustic guitar, produced by plucking the strings directly over the sound-hole, with the plane of the pick immaculately parallel to the line of the strings. I found this difficult to accept. For one thing, it was impossible to do on my guitar: the Yamaha’s body was too deep and its top too large for me to locate the pick in precisely the right place with the angles of arm, wrist, and hand coordinated in the approved manner. In a private lesson, Fripp acknowledged this, and suggested I get a smaller guitar. Well, fine. But one particular pleasure of the week at Claymont was the opportunity to wander around and borrow Crafties’ guitars that were not in use. I played Ovations, Martins, Guilds, Gibsons, funky old cowboy guitars, unfamiliar makes. I studied each one’s tone and playability carefully. I came to the conclusion that my 1977 Yamaha FG-295S, a made-in-Taiwan copy of a Gibson Hummingbird, sounded the best of them all: precisely because it was so gigantic, it put out the clearest, most resonant, loudest, most balanced, and overall just the most beautiful tone.

      1. Re: Yamaha FG 295S
        graybeard19

:My Yamaha is I believe a FG 295, red finish, looks like a Gibson Hummingbird. I bought in 1972, seems like mine was earlier than those in posts here. I know it was 1972 because I enlisted in the Airforce in March of 1973 and had it thru the service and still have it. I have played guitars, accoustic and electrics too of various manufacturers and this one seems to be a real honey. Never played on the expensive ones, cannot compare them therefore. But for me, this guitar sounds better with age as it ages in the long years. I someone out there has a chance to buy one, I would highly recommend it, This guitar has done do much for me………an old friend.

      1. Not sure if this is indicative of the price Colin but a friend of mine just bought one of these FG-295S in Moncton New Brunswick Canada for $300.00. It is in terrific condition and sounds great. It appears to have a laminated spruce top which would explain the durability of these beasts.

Sorry for the extremely late addition to this forum. I just started my research on these today.

I just read your post from Aug 2021 where you replaced a saddle and nut on this guitar. May I ask where you bought the saddle and what you bought? Tonight while changing strings and cleaning my guitar the saddle broke. Was the original glued in? I’d sure appreciate any help/guidance you can give.
My Yamaha FG295S is the first guitar I’ve ever owned. I’ve had it for 32 years now. I have an LR Baggs Lyric mic only system inside. I was checking out the saddle to see how hard it would be to upgrade to the LR Baggs Anthem system.
Anyway, Thanks for any help you can provide. I really apreciate it.

        Liam

        Hi everyone!

Does anyone know the guage of the strings that were on the FG 295S guitars when they were originally shipped? Or the best guage strings to use for intonation on these guitars.

        Thank you,

        Liam

      4. Bought mine in 1976 for $305 dollars. It is still my favorite instrument. My Takamine sounds like a toy next to it. They were made a little different back then. I wouldn’t sell mine even for the $2500 value I’ve seen in the comments below. Look for them. Have seen them in used stores for $200!!!

      5. The Brill 295S
        DLJ

I own one of these and paid about £125 around five years past, it does have a pick up in and sounds very good with or without an amp, I also own a red label FG300 which again is very good, this is worth circa £700 in the UK and the 295S don’t know but must be around a couple of hundred plus.
I wouldn’t get rid of either of these unless offered really good cash, even then would think about it really hard before letting them go. I use to own an FG300 cream label dating back to the late 70s and sold it! wished I hadn’t and tried to get it back, it was exported to Aussie land were apparently these guitars are sought after and realise high values, so I was offered it back but at a cost of more than double what I sold it for so reluctantly didn’t! sad now but that’s life. So if you have these guitars I would say keep them.

        Sylvie Arbour

I also own one that I bought in Renfrew, Ontario in 1976. Sound is amazing but haven’t played it in 30 years so looking to sell it. Can anyone tell me what it would be worth?

      7. Yamaha FG 295s Black label
        Brian T

I am a fortunate owner of one of these amazing guitars, the year of manufacture is the first number of the serial number, mine is 5 so it is ’75. This guitar is built to last and the awesome tonal sound quality if anything improves with age. There were a few variants of these produced by Nippon Gakki with black, red, orange and green labels, all sought after and loved by their owners, but the black label 295s seems to be regarded the best of them all. The models that were made in Korea don’t seem to rate as highly as the MIJ models and have a -1 (FG 295s -1) added to the model number. If I were to put a price on mine it must be worth at least $2500-00, you cannot replace this guitar with anything new, it just too . . . . . . . . . . .

If you’ve got one of these, just keep it, for yourself (who knows if one of these days you’ll not be wanting to play it again) or for your children or grand-children. It will be a great gift for them. I’ve got one, the same as the one on the picture. Dates back indeed to the early 1970’s. Bought it in France. It’s always been kept in its case when not played, always tuned, and sounds so great (it’s fitted with light Adamas strings). I can tell you, this guitar is priceless… Don’t sell it !

    1. Re: Yamaha Pacifica PAC311S wanted!!
      Alan

I first saw this type of guitar a few years back & I have been after one ever since then.
I recently obtained a 311MS from http://www.gak.co.uk who are a great company to deal with.
Nothing was too much trouble & delivery time etc. were spot on.

The 311 guitars are similar to the Telecaster design but individual enough to not be an outright ‘copy’ guitar.
The 311MS has a maple fingerboard version, whereas the 311S fingerboard is rosewood.
Both are very nice instruments, feel superb, sound great, & as you would expect from Yamaha, finished perfectly & are excellent value.
It would be surprising if an owner would want to part with their 311.

I am not sure these are still being made, but you may be able to get yourself one if you’re lucky.

      Take care

      Peter Forsey

: Seeking information about the quality of workmanship and durability of the FG-312II. I just purchased the guitar and plan on re-stringing the instrument. No information is to be found anywhere on this model.

I have an FG-312 which was bought new in the US in 1979/80 by my father as a present for me. Brought back to UK in same year. I played it for about 6 years then it went missing with my brother for about 12 years. I retrieved it in 2003, replaced the nut and some pegs, restrung and professionally set up. It plays wonderfully and the top has aged almost to an antique vintage look. It does sound quite "zingy" on the top e and b strings so perhaps I need heavier strings. The middle and bass are very full and sound great. Does tend to go out of tune, like many 12 strings, and needs retuning with a capo. According to Yamaha in UK it has a spruce laminate top, mahogony laminate sides and back, mahogony neck and rosewood fretboard. Has a scale of 636mm which is shorter than standard. Retailed in UK in 1980 for £99. Would not sell mine except for silly money which is unlikely. Don’t know how it would compare to ther 12 strings because I’ve not played many, but I do love playing it. If you are looking to buy a decent 12 string and see one for less than £100 or $150 US, I say buy it. Hope this is useful to anyone doing some research on FG-312.

          John

My FG-312 12 string was my first guitar. I bought it from my aunt in 1981. She played professionally. I have had that guitar for 28 years. It still plays wonderful and I have not adjusted the truss rod in 25 years. Its been all around the world. Some of the tuning pegs are very stiff. I plan to restore them next string change. The color has darkened beautifully and I love this guitar more than any of my other 10. It stays tuned for months at a time. If you have the chance to get one….Do it. I bought a later model Yamaha FG-411 (?) black 12 string and it plays very nice too, but the FG-312 fretboard feels flatter than the world was before columbus proved it was round. My first ex used a capo with a rivet in the back and made about 1/2 a dozen nice little dents, but otherwise its flawless and I wouldnt trade or sell it for anything.

          1. I purchased my 12 string Yamaha FG-312 acoustic back in1977 Toronto Canada. Paid $300 for it and thats all I had to my name for rent, so you know what happened next……………..kick out the same day. This was the first and only 12 string I bought. It proved I didn’t need another.
This thing sounds better than any 12 string I’ve ever played and a few of my professional friends who also owned 12 strings would quite often ask to borrow it, even a few times bands borrowed it, it’s got a big sound.
Refused to sell it many times but would like to know if it has any value.

I have had one of these for about 1 1/2 years now and have been quite happy with it. Mine seems to be an older model with the open headstock (like a classical guitar.) It has a bright but full sound. Recently stacked it up against a Fender and an Alvarez and it blew them both away on tone. Check out a review I posted on harmony central.com shortly after I purchased it.

i bought one in a pawn shop in 1997 in new orleans for $100. they were asking $150 for it. i got it without the hard case for that price. i bought the case about a month later for $30 at the same pawn shop. for the most part, i like it.

        Pascal

        Hi
I bought mine back in 1977 with its original box (so heavy !!!)
I’ve been moving everywhere with it, I played it both with 6 or 12 strings, with or without microphone, and it is still one of my favourite guitars.
The only thing I’d like if I was in front of the guitar shop back then, would be a cutaway model (not available in 1977), and perhaps a thinner neck (playing 12 strings on a thick neck is a bit painful).
This guitar is like a good french wine, getting better as time goes by …

      6. Yamaha FG 312ii
        Jack

I have had the Yamaha FG 312ii 12 string guiter for 30 years and I love it. This is one guitar I will never part with. When I went looking for a 12 string 30 years ago I tried out a Martin and to me it was like playing a 2 x 4 with strings but, from the moment I picked up the Yamaha, it was like the guitar played itself. As long as the guitar has not been damaged, I’d say buy it.

THE TONE IMPROVES WITH AGE, KEEP IT IN GOOD CONDITION, AND YOU’LL BE REWARDED WITH A WONDERFUL SOUND. MINE WAS RECENTLY VALUED AT EUROS 1,500 (WHATEVER THAT IS IN DOLLARS). GREETINGS FROM WICKLOW, IRELAND.

        1. I agree, everyone who has played my FG-312 also say that it has gotten better with age. I boughtit in 1977…….35 years ago and its still the best sound you’ll find…amazing.

Out of interest, what sort of value could you put on a mint condition SG200 with the serial no. of 004904 ?

        I know mine is priceless

I have 4 Yamaha SG guitars and three have the S/N stamped in the back of the headstock that is easy to see.. However, one SG2000 appeared that it didn’t have a S/N. It turns out that the S/N is there but I had to look at it in the sun and I could barely see it cause the s/n was stamped in the wood and the finish covers it up. BTW, I’m trying to find a dating scheme for these guitars … Can you guys email me S/Ns and what year you think they are?

          Thanks!

I’ve got a Yamaha FG-435 I want to sell. It’s about 7 years old and in decent shape. Got a nick on the back of it and a couple scratches. The neck and front are in great shape though. What’s this thing worth? And how come I don’t see a lot of these for sale?

FG-435 huh? That’s a great guitar. My brother recently got one from someone for $60 and it’s one of the best sounding guitars I’ve heard! I think a big reason why there aren’t many for sale is because everybody who gets thier hands on one loves it so they don’t sell it at all! As for value, Im not really sure how much it’s worth. But im do know I would pay $60 for one in a flash! I’ve been looking for a new guitar for quite a while now, and the FG-435 has been on the top of my list! So if you could send me some pics and tell me how much you’re asking that’d be great!

I have one which is in a rich dark sunburst with black back and sides I have owned it since new (early 1980’s) There were only a few sold in the uk at the time as they were priced at the top end of the market (Which is where they deserved to be with this professional model) It has been fitted with a fishman undersaddle pickup. The guitar is well used and has been refretted with super jumbo frets. It sounds a dream but is now up for sale as i am downsizing and dont have room for it in my collection This guitar has to go along with a few others I am looking for offers in the region of £250

      4. Yamaha - FJ-645

I purchased this guitar (FJ-645, not the FJ-645A that everyone is referring to here) when I was a young girl in 1982 or 1983….cannot remember exact date, but I loved this guitar when I purchased it and love it even more now. I would guess the 645A is a little newer than the 645 that I own. At the time I purchased it new for about $350. It was very lightly played, well…. for the past 20 years anyway, and is still in “new” condition. It has a gorgeous deep red finish on the front, ebony colored back and neck with pearl inlays on the neck. It came with a hard case which I’ve always used and still have. Recently had it restrung with light martin strings and decided to callous my fingers again….sounds better than it ever did :-). I wouldn’t part with it. Has an amazing deep sound, but then it is a jumbo/folk style guitar so it should. I was not sure of the wood used to make this guitar and in doing research I came across this site. Glad I did. Thanks for all the info. The following year I purchased a Yamaha FN-595E which is a narrow or “slim” electric acoustic with cutout. It is another gorgeous Yamaha that I would not part with. Not sure of the materials used, but this one also looks as good as the day I purchased it a good 30 years ago and sounds better than ever as well. I’ve heard some folks say the Yamaha’s get to sounding better with age and I believe this to be true. Very nice guitar and you are lucky to own one. 🙂

I would check into replacing the tuning macines with Sperzel or similar tuning machines. Consult with a few guitar shop techs before doing this, but the general advise would be to upgrade the tuners.

  20. Opinion about Yamaha FJ 645A & FJ651
    Karl Shank

I have played a Yamaha FJ645 A (this is a Jumbo) and have been very impressed with the bass, the volume or amplification it is capable of while still maintaining a bright sound on all strings. Is this a peculiartiy or are many of the Yamaha Jumbos like this? There is an FJ 651 I am looking at and wonder if it might have any or preferably all of these qualities. I ask this because I cannot play it, it is from another state. Does anyone have any advise or knowledge about this or any other Yamahas that might have all three of these characteristics? My budget is from $150-$250 give or take. Thanks, Karl

I own the very same guitar; the FJ-645A. It’s a jumbo body with a dark burgandy finnish and nice pearl-like inlays. One around the hole in front and a thin stripe down the back. I’ve had it for over 13 years and I swear it sounds sweeter every year. I agree with you about it’s sound. A rare jewel indeed. I paid almost $500 at my local music store brand new. I have a reagular case for it, but it’s nice and plush inside to avoid scratching it. One of these days I gotta break down and buy a hard case for it. I also own Yamaha drums. They’re just about the only kind i see at jazzfests. Sorry for the double or multiple pfollow up 🙂

The FG200 was made between 1972 and 1976. It has a spruce top, rosewood fingerboard, mahogany back and sides. Go to:

Click on Guitar Archives to get model info, click on Guitar Serial Number Wizard to get mfg date. Mine has two serial numbers, one inside on the back, the other inside, on the neck end. Try both. I’ve had mine for 33 years, and it seems to sound better as it ages. My only complaint is the high action.

I bought one about 10 years ago (when the economy was sluggish in my area) for $150.

Hey there, mine was bought new around 1979, and I don’t remember the price. However, it is a "CJ-838S II" Not sure what the difference is, but it does have a narrow, fancy inlay up the perfectly bookmatched back. It is easily the best playing and sounding flat-top I’ve ever played or heard, and it sounds better every year! ed

I wish I knew what kind of strings came on it because I have never been able to duplicate the exquisite sound of the originals. It is very well made and holds it finish very well.

      Bob

Guitar is great. Good sound for bluegrass and some country music. Neck has a real smooth feel to it which makes playing seem more at ease. I highly recommend this guitar. Had mine since 1983 still play it all the time today.

  24. I just bought a Yamaha SA-900. I am very pleased with it overall, but I can find nothing about the instrument save a listing on the Yamaha Japanese web site which I can’t read. Anyone have any information they could send me? Thanks!

    1. Just an update. I talked with Yamaha via email yesterday and the guy seemed to think I was on drugs or something. I guess he didn’t recognize the model number. Turns out this is apparently a model that was never sold here in the US markets. For those of you that are interested and can read Japenese I found the guitar on the Yamaha Japanese web site at:

      http://www.yamaha.co.jp/product/guitar/eg/database/sa/02/sa-900.html

I still don’t know squat about the guitar because I can’t read this (and I am no guitar guru). I converted the web page to English via the babel fish web site and here is what I found (with some strange conversions:

      SA-900
Price of sale that time = 80,000
      Chord length = 628mm (22f)
      Microphone = カバードハンバッキング (alnico V) ×2
      Control = 2v and 2t, microphone SW
Torso = The Cub + Buna
      Medium core = Alder
      Pole = Mahogany
      Finger board = Rose
Torso – pole = Set neck
Bobbin = Die-cast make torque adjustment attaching * chrome
      Chord = Light/write gauge
      Weight = 3.7kg
Color = Brown sunburst, パーシモンレッド, black To
1983 year sale to around 1988 sale

Anyhow, it don’t play like a $300 guitar so I think I did OK.

  25. Yamaha AE 2000 for sale !!!
    Paul Hirsh

I posted this as a reply to another message but I guess it needs a heading of its own. I am selling my AE-2000. Minus one tuning head and the pickguard. So if anyone out there has the tuning head and the pickguard come and buy the rest !! The harmony-central.com review of this instrument says this is the finest Japanese built electric/jazz guitar ever and I would personally leave out the word "Japanese" from that statement having owned a few vintage Gibsons in my time. Having said all that, it would work better if I could find that knob. Who’s got it???

I bought a FG 580 in 1975, stiil have it. Increbible guitar. I paid $200 canadian , new. Today I could not replace it for probably less than $4000. I have played $4000 Martin guitars that would not hold a candle to mine.

        1. Re: wanted yamaha fg-580
          George

Hi, here is some information regarding FG-580.

          Year(s) Sold: 1972
          Original MSRP: $ 185.00
          Top: Spruce
          Back / Sides: Jacaranda
          Neck / Fingerboard: / Ebony

          The top is solid spruce.
The side is a laminate but the back is solid 2 piece Jacaranda (Brazilian Rosewood). Needless to say, it’s beautiful. Unfortunately, for some unknown reason, the value of the guitar is not terribly high. The going price in US is about $400-500. Inspite of the fact that the back alone will cost twice that in raw state to produce a new guitar. The craftsmanship that went in is next to none and the resulting sound is superb if you are capable of listening to it with an unbiased ears.

          1. Re: wanted yamaha fg-580
            R. Jones

All the info is about correct and I’m quite surprised about the original value…???…In Canada, I paid 580 bucks for this in 1972 and at that time Canadian funds were about equal to US funds……A Martin D-18 at that time would have cost me about 750 bucks… Investment wise it was not a great deal as a D-18 today that vintage would be worth considerable more, however, my 580 has aged well and today it sounds as good as any Martin I’ve played or heard….I am a bluegrass fanatic and am surrounded by d-18’s,
35’s etc etc, including two Martins of my own.. I still prefer to play the old 580….Sell it????.. I suppose I would if the price was right, but, it would have to be at least double the current US value…Cosmetically, it has a few marks cause I played it semi-pro from 1972 to 1999….If you can get one, I would suggest you go for it..You won’t be sorry if you can find someone to part with it….

Got one today in Scarborough from the busker who plays beautiful classical music, he let me have it for a song, plays beautifully, so pleased with it, the neck is perfectly straight the action is high the intonation is spot on, it tunes very well and holds it’s tune and remains pefectly in key up the neck it has a lovely full bodied tone, a very rich and gentle sounding guitar! Pleased as Christmas punch with it!!! What a gift!

Can anyone give me any information about this Les Paul Standard copy made by Yamaha? I have recently purchased a used one and I am extremely interested in finding out its’ true value.
