  1. Yamaha SG200 info needed
    Mighty_Celt

    Hi

I am interested to know as much about my old Yamaha SG200 as I can find out. Does any one even know when they were manufactured? I bought mine in 1988 and it sounds as good today as it did then, despite its rough treatment and occasional neglect.

Although I promise I’ll never neglect it again!

Hello – can you tell me about the red label on vintage Yamaha’s. I used to have a FG 150. It was a red label and said Japan. But some people say they have a red lable vintage Gakki? and that it is made in Taiwan? Would appreciate if someone could help me understand. Thanks.

For a fact it is Taiwan. I have a 1971 model in great shape, sitting right beside me now. It’s all original, bought new and the sticker says Taiwan.

Can anyoune help me date (possibly by the seial no) my Yamaha SG400? It has made in Japan stamped near the serial number, has single cream binding on the body, neck & headstock with claw inlay in front of headstock, exposed humbuckers no scratch plate gold hardware.
What period were these made from/to, any inf would greatly help. thanks

      1. I’m told that a “2” stamped into the back of the headstock means the neck, at least, was made outside Japan. The process was flawed in so far as the neck was “pre- tensioned(?)”. The remedy was, apparently to heat treat the neck. This is a “shit or bust” technique but mine seems fine. Never have found a serial number!

: I have a thirty year SG-30 which still plays very nicely. Does anyone have have any info on this guitar? The Yamaha Serial Number Database comes up blank. Serial no is 23759.

My 30 year old SG-30 has two sets of dimarzio powered humbuckers, one standard the other, the bridge pick-up a twin pair of horizontal metalic singles wound together. The work is signed inside and dated (1978) for the upgrade I believe this is very advanced for it’s time.

You can imagine the work on this – fitting two more pairs of toggles to split the pick-ups and power them up, as well as the 3-way Neck/Combo/bridge selector. Complete this with a set of "Patent pending" length adjustable Ibanez Machine heads and I think I might have something a bit special.

Any help guys would be handy.

: A Yamaha SG-30 has just come up for sale on ebay. also there is one on the web site given below. onkoudou.hippy.jp/ITEM/guitar/yamaha-sg30/YAMAHA-SG-30.html They were made around 1973 and were one of the first of Yamaha’s SGs

:I have found Japanese web sight about Yamaha SG-30 Guitars:but only said in Japanese language .
They says These guitars was begun to sold Dec ´73 and ended end of ´74… so only one year have been sold … very rare guitar indeed. They do not mentioned about serial number but if you check pickups there are Japanese showa era years on it…!I have one SG-30 myself and says 49.5.2(year Shouwa 49=1974 )2nd of May. and also SG-30 on it too! my guitars serial number is 28948… your guitar could be start with 48.?.? this means made year 1973.
They made body with laminated Katsura wood (Japanese Judas Tree),neck with mahogany and rosewood fingerbord. two colors was offered Natural and Cherry Red and weight 2.8kg. I was checking my SG-30´s pickups today… they measured Neck and Bridge are very same and little over 16K ohms.
I hope helps…! and here is picture of pickup…!

Do yourself a favor. Do not part with it. Have a custom made bone saddle and nut. About $80.00 and you will have a guitar that will keep up with the best. Through on some elixer strings and grover tuners and go from there. I know. I have one from 1978 mint. I will match it with my Martin HD28 and Yairi DY85

As far as i have been able to find out, the Yamaha fg350W has a laminated spruce top and laminated roeswood back and sides. Now MY fg350W sounds as if it is made from all solid woods. As someone commented a while back, ” This is one of the Taiwan guitars that got through the net”. I think he meant it was one that just came together in around 1977 to look and sound fantastic. I hope that helps.

I have one also, bought it new in 1978 in Hong Kong. It’s been with me everywhere I have ever gone and I wouldn’t part with it for anything. This guitar has mellowed with age and sounds sweeter now than when I bought it. If you have one keep it and pass it on when you die. I’ve seen them on ebay now and then and they sell for anywhere from $600 to $1200 depending on condition.

Hey guys, same guitar, same story!! I own one too!! I bought it second hand in a shop in Rome in 1986 and have never seen another one or found news about specs etc. and it seems to have disappeared from history of Yamaha guitars. I’ve been using it a lot and transformed it quite a bit by replacing the original machine heads with golden Schaller, the original bridge with a golden Kahler-vibrato-fine tuning bridge, I moved the neck-pick up to the middle and put an EMG pick up (like the early Steinberger pickups) at the neck and added three "on-off" switches for each pick up… so besides being a rare guitar it has become quite a unique one. If you want to see a picture of it just go to:

I tried the yamaha.com serialfinder, but it seems this guitar is way too old for that. It seems to be a mahogany build, 2x humbucker, neck isn’t a bolt-on, not sure if it’s through body. I have the above – Nippon Gakki Label, Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, solid spruce top, mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard. Lovely guitar which I cannot play any more due to wrist injury.
Let me know if you are interested urgently because I have someone else who is making an offer.
          Thanks

: : I’d prefer Yamaha FG’s with the Nippon Gakki label but would consider others in good condition. Anyone with anything for sale please contact me.

          : : Thanks

: I have an FG 345 (Made in Taiwan Republic of China) I bought in early seventies. I added a Fishman rare earth pickup. Has beautiful tone & it’s in great condition with no cosmetic or structural problems. The action is high up the neck but music shop said that can be improved for $25. Let me know if you’re interested and I can send pics.

Hi! I have a FG300 Yamaha I purchased in Japan while in the Navy in 1972…it was and is still a great playing guitar. I have been using it as a spare…After I bought myself a Taylor 714/ce I do not play the 300 much….what is it worth?

I’ve got a FG-300 Nippon Gakki Yamaha. It is in good shape with theexception that the pickguard fell off and it is reglued on less the satisfactory. I oould have that fixed or sell it as is. Other wise in very good shape. I am the original owner. It was bought in 1971 in California.

I had an FG280. Fantastic guitar with light guage strings on it. The sound was fantastic. Unfortunately last week I was travelling home from england and it was damaged by the airline (rather brutalised beyond repair) Can anyone give me an idea of what it was worth for insurance purposes. I bought this from new about 27 years ago. Thanks

:I have a FG580 purchased around 1962 by me.. I used this instrument from that time to approx. 1985 as a stage instrument so it has some use marks.. It’s in pretty good shape tho’ and still sounds great.. The action is still fantastic and I still enjoy playing it once in a while as I own quite a few instruments now.. It’s original except for a "Shadow" pick-up mounted under the bridge and a "shadow" end-pin plug installed…

      Hi-

I have a Yamaha (Nippon Gakki) FG-1000. I bought it used while I was in Japan in the mid 1980s. I believe it was made during this period. I am not sure I want to sell but I was hoping that you might have info on this model as the Yamaha archive and the blue book do not. It looks much like a FG-2000 with the 3 panel back and abalone lining all the seams. Thanks. Karen

I’m looking for an FG-180 from the late sixties/early seventies. I expect there to be some wear on the body, but would be thrilled to find one in mint condition. At the very least, it should be in very good condition — bascially, I don’t want to have to fix anything. I’d prefer a red label Nippon Gakki, but I’ll consider anything from ’68-’72. If you have one you’d like to sell and are willing to ship to the midwest, please let me know!

My grandfather gave me this old 12 string electric Yamaha and I haven’t been able to find any info on it. Any ideas on where I could find some info?

I am trying to date my much loved red label FG140 bought from a workmate in ’71/2 in UK. The serial number is 1189976. The Yamaha serial number identification site doesn’t recognise it but I gather that is not unusual. Any help please?
Also, I bought it in a cream coloured ‘cardboard’ type case with brown plastic edging to the seams and lined in red felt. The case has long since been painted black and now consigned to the attic in favour of a Hiscox hardcase. Were these guitars sold with a case and if so could the one described above be authentic?

      1. Yamaha FG-110
        Chuck Darling (DC)

        I taught my daughter Allison
how to play guitar in one visit,
        writing out, then printing out
        fourteen chords for her.
        Two weeks later, Allison
was working on Sister Golden Hair
        from tablature that she downloaded
        from the internet.
        I encouraged her to play
        my Yamaha FG-110,
that I had purchased for her mother as a wedding present,
        more than 20 years earlier.
Grace had wanted to learn guitar,
        but when a string snapped
as she was learning to tune the instrument,
she put it down, and never continued.

        For Christmas, I got Allison
        a pair of small pliers,
        and small diagonal cutters,
        with vinyl handles…
        (small enough to fit
        in the guitar case.)
        for properly changing
        a new set of strings.
        ( I showed her how )
I gave her with some guitar picks,
        and a capo.
        I think I got her a tuner,
        the electronic ones were
        very affordable by then.

      3. Yamaha fg110-1 SBK
        CJB

I have a Yamaha FG110-1 SBK in very good condition. Yamaha informed me the guitar was manufactured between 1974 to 1976. I am trying to determine the value of this rare guitar. Any help is appreciated.

      4. I have one with a pickup from the early 70’s, 1972. Bought it at CHARLIE BEANS. I have literally had this guitar half way around the world on tours and shows with no more than the black fiberboard case it came with. It is built like a tank. It has been in the back of trucks, cars, on ships and in the holds of airliners and baggage carousels, sun, cold, wind and rain. It still sounds great and is my everyday leave on a stand acoustic guitar. When I get inspired, I reach for her, she delivers every time. She is made in Japan and has the tan Hammamatsu label. Her action is very high above the 4th fret but I’m used to it. She is a laminate through and through, except for the neck, probably why she’s lasted so long. Contrary to what everyone thinks, laminates are the way to go if you’re going to be traveling a lot, they can really take a beating and with pickups being so good these days the solid wood thing isn’t as important, unless of course you are playing mic’d up or pure acoustic. BTW the pick up that came on this guitar stinks, very coney sounding. When I went back out to perform after a long hiatus, I first used this guitar with a pop in Dean Markley pickup. Worked fine with a volume pedal. I have retired her from live performances and moved on to a Taylor GA3 with a K&K Pure Mini setup. I can look at this guitar and be reminded of so much that has come and gone in my life. I would never sell her.

i have a Yamaha 110 my wife bought for me at a pawn shop for $80 35 years ago. it has lived very hard, never had a case or even a gig bag. tossed around, travelled the country by the strap on my back. rode hard and put up wet more times than i can count. it has more dings, scratches and stains than one can count…..it is still my number one. this guitar is not for sale at any price.

      6. Yamaha FG110
        TheOmDude

My FG110 was bought at a Franchised Yamaha dealer in Bankok in 1970.
It has a really big sound (Others at folk gatherings have commented on it.) but it has a very hard action. I gave it to my daughter, who never played it and now I have it back. All my calusses are gone now so it will be a while before I can play it much.
What I want to know is, what is the significance of the “KL” on the back batten just above the label (which is orange, BTW.)?

  10. SG-500 Confusion...
    Bob

    Hello all,

I’m looking at a SG-500B and while trying to find some background info on it, I discovered there are a few SG-500 variants. This one has a bolt-on neck, toggle by the pots – thin binding on the top only, uncovered pups, dot inlays – I’ve seen SG-500 with set necks, the toggle on the upper cutaway, fat markers, etc. How many different SG-500’s are there – Trying to date the axe I’m looking at and also if a bolt-on is really as good as the set-neck – Any help appreciated –

    scal

    Hey All,

First, I’m looking for an FG-180 in very good condition with low action. Must be RED label Nippon gakki.

Second, I’m looking for any other RED label Nippon Gakki FG’s in good condition. I’m not a dealer, I just like themand am looking to add a few good ones to my collection.

Third, there ARE some Yamaha FG’s that are Nippon Gakki that are NOT RED label, but a sort of greenish/brown label from the early 70’s. Anything would be nice.

If anyone has anything for sale please contact me. Thanks in advance.

I see a few posts for the SC800 and the SC1200 but zip for the SC1000 that I have owned since about 1982. I bought it used then so reckon on between 77 and 80. Does anybody know anything about this. Like the other models it seems quite rare and is just a great, flexible guitar.

I’m looking for a guitar with a bigger sound, for my son to play at church, un-plugged. There’s a gentleman that has an FG-180, with a red label inside, but he said (over the phone) that it does not say "Nippon" or "Gakki" on the label. Does anyone know some details about this guitar? He also said that the truss rod cover is missing. Where might I find one of those?

I’ve got two FG-230s: one bad condition ’70, and a Nippon-Gakki red label without a serial. The guitar guru said that it might be a prototype or an anomaly, and there are no records of any FGs born w/o serial #s.

          ehara

Hi, I have a Yamaha SA30-T hollow body guitar that I am looking to sell. I contacted Yamaha today, and they were able to give me information regarding the model # based on some pictures that I sent to them. I guess this is a rare guitar, in that it was never imported for sale in the US. It was manufactured from 1967 to 1972. It is a nice guitar with a good sound. Don’t know much about guitars, but I could make a little video of my son playing it so you could get an idea of the sound. It is not in perfect shape. The tuning pegs were replaced, and also the bridge was replaced with a similar Yamaha bridge (at least that is what the guy at the music store determined). There are a few scratches as well as a chip out of one edge that seems to have been repaired. I can send photos to try to show the condition of the guitar. Let me know if you are interested.

To add to my post, there is also a Yamaha case that goes with it. The little metal label attached to the guitar reads, Yamaha Nippon Gakkai, I believe.

Hi I have a SAT30 all original, case,Guitar strap, all yahama logo. This guitar has one small nick where you plug in the patch cord, serial # 3137 located on neck. Do you have any idea what this would be worth, I have checked it out on the internet seen a wide range of prices. If you know of any one looking for one, I would consider selling. Thanks

        3. Do you know how to age a FG 75 tan label Nippon Gakki. I can read 68608 serial numbers could be two more in front like XX68608 is a seven figure serial sufficient for a fg 75?

It’s kept in a plush, hard shell case. I’ve been thinking about getting a 12-sting, so I would be willing to part with it for the right price. If you’re interested email me and I will send pictures.

I have a FG-160E, very high action which I love, I did remove the original wiring because of the condition and have been meaning to replace it which would be very easy to do…heh heh…procrastination. But damn this guitar needs no plugs it has a booming sound by itself, by the way I love this guitar, but for the right price I’ll part.

  19. Yamaha FG-312 II 6-string
    Wayne

I have the aforementioned guitar and have not been able to find parts, worth, etc… on this model. It is an acoustic with an electric pick up, but no EQ. Can someone tell me about this model? It has Gold lettering "YAMAHA" on the head and an ivory trim on the body.

      Jeff

While stationed in Japan in 1978 (USMC) I bought two Yamaha 12-string guitars. They came with hard cases and I opened one and used it. The other has traveled with me over the years. It’s still in it’s sealed plastic bag just like the day I bought it. The label inside the guitar body says "Nippon Gakki Co. Ltd." and there is a ‘K’ stamped inside the body. It also says Made In Japan.

I’m interested in finding out where I can go to gett information about this guitar.

      1. Yamaha FG - 260
        Glynn

Hi, I have a Yamaha FG – 260 and I think the ser no is 50207464 or 0678024 these numbers are stamped on the inside of the guitar, it was made in Taiwan and I was wondering how old it is.

      2. FG260 pawn shop find
        Anonymous

I was in a local pawn shop today – in search of a rosewood tele – when I spotted this Yamaha FG230. It had been listed @ $129 but they had it marked down to $99. I offered out the door no tax and they bit.

The action is amazingly low. While I love the FG Yamahas (I own: FG 110, FG130 red label FG150 and a nice FG360) i always shied away from 12 strings because of the added string tension scares me as far as neck condition is concerned. But this one looks great. Sure, there are some cosmetic scratches on it. I’d be real surprised if there weren’t any.

Serial # starts with 302 so I know it was made in Feb. 1972. But the Yamaha Archive site says this model was only manufactured from ’74- ’77.

Red label Nippon Gakki. I could not be happier. Now I just have to squirrel it away so the wife doesn’t get pissed at me! The thing though. I had just taken a lot of loose change to the bank to cash in earlier, and I had just over $100. So if there is any justification, that would be it!

        FG Yamaha fan

      3. I bought a Yamaha FG-360 12 string acoustic for $185 on March 31, 1978 in Portland, Maine at a place called New England Music. I still have it and it still sounds awesome. The play-ability has never changed and it holds a tuning forever! I know what the real value is to me… but I’ve always wondered how much is it worth.

    1. I too have the same guitar with a FG41 sticker on the back of the head stock. It is Black with an ivory like binding outlining the body with a white binding on the edges of the fret board.

What gives the guesstimated year away is the double pick guard. I can’t recall the name of the band, however, I was told that a band in the sixties made double pick guards popular.

I still need a confirmation on the guitar as well.

: Hi – I was wondering if anyone might be able to tell me what an FG 411C acoustic/electric would be worth if I sell it?

      1. Re: FG411C Acoustic/Electris Price??
        Adam M

You should be able to get between $200 to $250 for it if it is in mint condition. I own this guitar and it has a nice tone and stays in tune forever – plays like a $500 acoustic. Very Nice guitar that should be worth more, but strangely, is not.

  23. Aes620 or SGB700S
    Col Vance

I want to buy a new electric guitar for RnB (mostly heavier blues)

At the moment I’m thinking either the new AES620 or the SGB700S Yamaha guitars.

I’ve heard the AES is very good quality and versatile.

Does anyone own an SGB700S or have any comments about these guitars?

  25. FG-435... who wants it?
    redphive

Hey, I have an FG-435 forsale… it’s in absolute perfect condition. I’ve been trying to sell it for 3 months now. I never bothered to check the model until yesterday and today I did a search for it in YaHoo… seems to be a very popular guitar.

Best offer can have it. I can supply pictures upon request. (might take a few days for me to get my hands on a digital camera.. but I will)

Hit me back with an e-mail if anyone is interested. I’m going to advertise it on Ebay next week if I don’t have any buyers.

    Thanks.

I realize this is a very old request but I was just checking the web for value of my FG-345. I purchased it new in 1978, Taiwan w/Japan tuners, and it is in near mint condition. It still has the Martin strings I replaced back in 1979. It plays great though I play brass and just bought the guitar to mess around with.

      William

I have a yamaha FG-345 for sale. Made in taiwan in 1981…has rose wood neck and is solid spruce. Has its fair share of niks and scratches but nothing that will alter the sound. Has original tuning knobs w/ "yamaha made in japan" imprinted on them. Some bridge work has been done to ove the strings closer to the fret board. Comes with original case (which has been through hell and back). E-mail if interested.
