A good yamaha always apreciates in value, the older it gets…. I have a 1981 sj-400s… I don’t even really know it’s value. If you have found an appraiser, please point me in the same direction!

  2. 1967 FG-335 Made on Valentines day
    Danny Oakes

I have a FG-335 guitar that I bought second hand from someone back in 1987. A lady that worked with me, she told me that the guitar was 20 years old. From my estimation, that would make it approximately 40 years old.
Went to the Yamaha guitar website, punched in the serial, and found out it was built on Valentines day, 1967.
Does anyone have any idea what it is worth now? I paid $75 for it back in 87.
    Thanks

FYI ~ I have an FG 300 that was my graduation present from high school, and that was 34… make that 35 years ago, and I have been playin’ it for decades, and it is all banged up, and been through everything, and it just gets sweeter, and sweeter, and sweeter. All my pals, when we jam, if anyone ever picks it up, they always comment, "this thing is nice!" or something. One guy offered me a nice relatively new Taylor, straight across. I said "no thanks". Keep looking. Well worth it. A treasure

It seems the winning combination is the red label, Nippon Gakki, and "Made In Japan" on the back of the headstock. Those appear to be the famous ones, beat out only by the Japan ones made before that I believe that were not exports out of that country. After these initial exports, they were assembled other ways, including in Taiwan and production standards were hard to monitor.

The red label Japan models gave American guitar makers a real run for their money. These were still plywood guitars (veneers) but are sought after today for a reason.

Any takers?

hi i have a couple of fg 300s one i bought in oknawa 1974 one from a pawn shop for less than 100 dollars. i tell my friends i think the value of the yamaha made in japan (pre 1975) are worth the number in the sound hole. if in good condition (neck stright etc). the fg 300 plus numbers that were made in korea or tiawan are not the quality of the old ones (i don’t think). the 300 made in japan has the adjustable brige. last ones made in japan are the fg 75 thru fg300. if you play keep its hart to beat. i love mine.

I also have an FG300 with a yellow label that states "Nippom Gakki Co. Made in Japan". My sound hole number is 40423 so we’re nearly neighbours!
The only info I’ve gathered was off a guy from the US who claimed to be a bit of an expert on these guitars. He speculated that it was probably an FG300 made prior to them being exported to the US (which was when the red label relates to). I can’t really see this tallying though with the label being in English

I cant find a serial number ANYWHERE on it. Sounds Really nice, I would nt sell it ever. Think I paid around 360 or 380 Australian Dollars for it. I think they were built in 1974.Could be quite valuable. Where did you find the serial number? Thanks.

I have been looking around and I see a lot of people saying only the red labeled Yamaha guitars are the ones made in the nippon gakki Factory. I have a gold labeled FG 300 and It does say built In Nippon-Gakki Japa. I was wondering if anyone knows what the difference is between a red and orange labeled FG 300 provided both were made in the N-G Factory? I cant find a serial number on it, my only guess would be that it would tell you something about the age of it.

I think the guitar was built in Japan around 1972-73, They have a laminated top nato neck and nato back and sides. Sound good though…I would replace the tuners as they are real cheap and fall apart after a while(30 years??)

I live in Kenora Ontario Canada. There was a musician who played in Kenora on one particular night many years ago. After the show he had his wallet stolen. My brother had seen the show at the bar and also saw the guy outside selling his guitar amoung other items to get enough money to get back to wherever he was from. My brother bought his guitar for $50.00 and gave it to me in hopes that I might learn to play it some day. I was only around 7 at the time. The guitar is a Yamaha FG-160-1. The musician’s initials were on the guitar, GJD, I still have it and I took my first guitar lesson last week. I am 41 now! We have a new friend who is a musician and he put out his own CD a few years ago. He played my guitar while staying with us. I couldn’t believe that MY old guitar sounded so deep and rich. Beautiful. He was my inspiration. Why are you looking into this specific Yamaha?

I own a 1975 Yamaha FG-160-1 Black Label guitar. I bought it from a good friend back in the 80’s and he had owned it since new. It is a great guitar, sound is awesome and it plays well. But I also own a Martin D-28. Now, while I love my Yamaha there is no comparison between the two guitars. The Martin is far and away the better guitar in every respect. Let’s be honest, vintage Yamaha guitars are very good instruments, but they do not compare to Martin or higher end Taylor guitars. You get what you pay for. But it is better to be playing something than nothing.

Melinda – really hope you bought that guitar for your husband! Especialy if the label inside the guitar was red. Depending on condition, the guitar could be worth over $1000.
Regardless of value if it’s in good shape – neck straight, no serious damage, it will be the sweetest playing guitar he’ll own for a long time.

Well I have one I bought in 1968 still have the receipt (Akron,Ohio)..I called Yamaha and they said they never made one and don’t have any record of the FG_500 or the FG-550 same guitar (just with more Mother-of-pearl on it)…Days later the guy from Yamaha calls me back…He said he found an-old guy (i hope he was older them me lol) who worked at Yamaha years ago and he said he remembers the guitars being made (hand made) and very few sold..Well my guitar is still in very good condition and it sounds great and alot of sustain…I worked for my dad making .25 cents anhour to buy this guitar I payed $250.00 plus tax with hardshell case that it sits in…So that’s my story and I still don’t know what it’s worth today and Yamaha never made it.. lol

        1. I have an FG500 I bought in 2009 second hand for £420. It has a solid spruce top and laminated jacaranda back and sides. The tone is the best of all the guitars I have, improved by an upgraded bone nut (original is plastic). They were the top of the range in the year they were made. Beautifully made, maple and ebony binding and inticate maple/ebony rosette. No plastic binding, all wood. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Lovely smooth tone. Here is the catalogue http://www.t-shiga.com/sub7-5-1-7.htm original price was 50,000 yen. The later all solid Yamahas like the FG1000J, FG1200J, and especially the FG1500, and FG2000 are the best they made, but to my ear the FG500 is a wonderful instrument.

          HI Michael
I just happened to check this old post that my wife put up years ago…I did in fact buy the FG500 and it really is an amazing guitar…and your right no one seems to know they ever existed or what it is.I just had a very well respected tech set it up and do some minor bridge work and he rates this thing higher than a Taylor and equal to a Collings in terms of quality workmanship and sound; it’s really quite a guitar….thanks for sharing your info

I have a Yamaha FG500 red label Nippon Gakki that I’d like to sell. I purchased it when I was in junior high, thinking I wanted to learn to play guitar. I ended up on piano, but I still have the guitar. My boyfriend at the time had a Mom who worked for the Yamaha Company and she arranged for me to buy it. The year would have to be 1969 or 1970. I’m the only owner and it has some scratches, but otherwise the integrity is fine and everything is original. Any idea how I can figure out a price? Thanks.

Yes. Found one. Rare, with original case… been watching for awhile. Another fine old instrument they made is the FG 580, which is the same woods, but later. these were made in Japan and Taiwan..

      3. I bought a FG 500 in 1968 in the UK and stripped the varnish off and then french polished it 30 times after taking the soundboard down to about 2mm – dangerous but its and amazing instrument. I have never played a steel string that comes anywhere near it, although I have a fair collection.
I can confirm a luthier who looked at it was sure it was handmade and I find it is really interesting there is such a shroud of mystery surrounding them.
If you can find a good one, snap it up. They are really durable , as well.

They are both early to mid 70’s yamahas– the yamaha site has a serial number checker that will give you the exact date. The value depends upon condition and to some degree whether or not the label under the sound hole is red or not. They do not have the collecter’s interest that north american guitars of the same vintage have, but they are both very sevicable and have great tone for the price. The FG-7508 is most probably an FG-750S (solid top). Best guess at price is around $175 to $200 ea.

Anyone have any info. on the value of a Black label Yamaha G-50 in excellent condition? It was purchased new in 1969 and is still in the possession of the original owner.

I’ve got two FG-230s. One, a 1972 in bad condition, regular label, that I’m not too fond of. The other-that’s a different story. Good condition, red Nippon-Gakki label, but no serial number anywhere. Could it be a prototype? Is it worth anything? any info would be greatly appreciated.

I have a FG230 Red Label Nippon Gakki…the serial number is on the block of wood where the truss rod attaches….look inside towards the neck attachment area. I’m told by my serial number it was made in Jan’68

I have a Fg-230 as well, I bought it for $139 at a pawn shop, It was well worth the money, It is a great sounding guitar, I Called Yamaha to find out the year, turns out that is is a 1970 and worth lots more then what I payed for it, They could not tell me to the # what it is worth, they said that it is all up the the buyer. Ill take a guess that you didnt pay more than 200 for it, and if you didnt you got a great deal, and hold on to it b/c some day it will be worth a lot of money,
        Mike

I know where the serial # is (my ’72 has one), but the other FG230 doesn’t have one. I asked the guys at Yamaha, and they said they know some of the first ones produced don’t have serial numbers. But they couldn’t tell me how many…

I own the FG-441S and believe the "S" stands for solid body and don’t what the CE means. The 441’s were built between 1995 to 1997 then discontinued. I don’t know what they originally sold for, however, I purchased mine used in 2003 for $150.00 w/cheap case. I suggest you talk to your local music store. They have a book on all makes and models for trade ins. Its a nice guitar with a good sound especially with new strings. Good luck and I hope this helped.

The CE stands for Cut-away/Electric so it’s an acoustic with elctronics installed. I have a FG441S that was built in the 80’s and is in brand new shape. I gave $100 for it with a beat up hard case and electronic tuner. I too am trying to find out what the FG441S sold for when it was first introduced.

I own the FG-441S and have been looking off and on the internet for awhile now to find out more about this guitar. S is solid top which is sweet. But they didn’t make very many of them thus the lack of info. However, I just saw where one sold recently for 349.99 used of course. If anyone hears anything further on this guitar I would love to know more than it being made in Taiwan. Must have been an 80’s thing. Thanks!~

              1. I own a pristine condition Yamaha 441S, which has been my main professional guitar since I purchased it for £239 in 1994. The top is a solid, close grain spruce, and the back and sides are Ovangkol. They are very loud guitars acoustically, with excellent tonal properties. I love the neck width, which is more like an 60’s Electric guitar neck. It is possible to wrap my whole hand around the neck!! The fretboard and Bridge are solid rosewood. The Machine heads are Yamaha closed type, very precise. This guitar has been well played and earned me a living for all these years, yet it is still like new. Best Guitar investment I have ever made. The spruce top is turning a golden colour, as it matures.

I believe the 441s the s I was told was for small as in smaller body size. Mine seems to be regular Dreadnought guitar. so I dont know

      2. Is this still for sale?

I’ve been looking for this guitar online, and I was wondering if it was still for sale. I’d just be interested in the guitar, not the case, unless you want to throw it in. And if it’s not, do you know of any in your area that are for sale?

Made in Taiwan. This is also a test – have replied 3 times, nothing posted. Don’t like one of my "key" words naming the brand name of another company besides Yamaha?

        1. Re: S-50 A acoustic info!!
          Dave

I just picked one up today at an antique market for $80 CDN in great shape! It has steel strings, but I think maybe it might have had nylon strigs back in the day….don’t quite know if I should restring it with nylon or steel when I clean it up. Sounds great though…no cracks or warping.

If anybody else has one, I’d love to get a definite date on it or see pics of another one… the previous mention of "1967" sounds about right based on how mine looks.

          1. I to have an old s50a and have spent years researching it.. my father got it new as gift and kept in better conditions then mine have sold for over 3500$ u.s. in good tto average conditions usually sell 500-800$ and were only made from mid 1967-1972
