I worked with him also in 1993 as a pickup winder and apprentice, I may hold on to that bass if i were you, the pickups alone are demanding $500 by themselves if their the early hand sighned ones, I actually have the only prototype pickup developed for a guitar in full humbucking size. Any poor bass is considered a classic today. if you wish to sell it let me know after lenny has a grab at it. NOTE any bass bearing the serial number 001 thru 022 should be considered stolen and properly returned to Lane ~sIXx~

What I just read about any of Lane’s basses between serial number 001 thru 022 are stolen, are just not completely so. I was Lane’s first commercial sale of a base. He made it to my custom spec’s somewhat. The serial # is #20. At that point, all lower numbered bass’s were shop prototypes. Lane and I went over that quite completely, because I wanted serial #1. He didn’t budge, LOL.

I consulted with Lane from about the summer of 91 till sometime in 93 when I went to work for Ken Smith in Pennsylvania making his basses. The difference between Lane and Ken was night and day. Early on with Lane I did acquire number seven prototype, which helped him out in the moment as I lay down $700 cash. I was working at a electronics company at the time as the quality manager. Being a veteran I took veteran’s Day off and went to Lane’s shop for the day. He sat me down at an easel and set me up with a set of French squares which I had never seen before. 3 hours later I had my number for prototype designed. My number three prototype was a collaboration with Lane. These were some of the best days of my life as Lane could not have been any closer to me as my own father. Truly a humanitarian and a kindred spirit. I have owned three Alembics a 6-string Tobias pregibson of course, and several other high-end instruments including the number 7 prototype Lane poor. I could plug in Lane’s bass into my amplifier which was pushing 1710 Watts. I could turn the pre and the post on the amplifier all the way up, while turning the volume on the base all the way up, standing right in front of the amplifier with no feedback or noise at all. Absolutely mind blowing you will not find better quality period. He used a neodymium based pickup later on when he passed the baton on the pickup manufacturer they started using samarium. I understand there are some minor issues in the recording studio with those pickups but on the performance level there is nothing in the world like them. Just depends how picky you choose to be.
Lane had become afflicted with Lyme disease in 1983. It lay dormant for 17 years. When it affected him in the year 2000 it took some time to find the right doctor. Subsequently and being the genius that he is he has become an advocate for Lyme disease.
If you have something negative to say about Lane, do not come to me with it.

my name is joe , i was an apprentist with lane in 1992-94,he was not a thift nor did he steal from his people. lane is a very dedicated person in the ‘r&d’ feild.if anyone lost anything in the company well than thats the chance you take in investing. no one bitchin about lost stock money on wall street ,let it go. if you lost anything than so did lane.i personaly saw him throw every thing he had into the cause. ive seen him help people without asking for anything in return.if you were lucky enough to be on the inside than you know what im talkin about.every one who spent time at that shop left with a gift of talant that could not be bought or taught.you expirenced it from THE MASTER of the craft. lane never stole from investers,if he owes anything to anyone its himself.personally i never charge anyone to pro set up an axe nor do i charge to do minor repair becuse i give it back if you will.now let lane be free and stop wondering where he is he knows what he it doing.-jo mama

I apprenticed with Lane in 15 years ago and i still hold his lessons very very dear. He had a way of teaching, more like coaxing logic from you, a way to find a correct path to a solution yourself. I bothered him for years prior to working for him, even to just sweep his floor and i finally wore him down. My time spent in the shop was the absolute highlight of my youth. Is he perfect? – no. Is he organized? – no. But that’s what you get when you have the opportunity to work side by side with a genius – an eccentric who is easily very kind, open, brilliant and giving. If he misled anyone, it was himself, in thinking he could make everyone happy at the same time. He took on too much. Everyone wanted a piece of him. Again, he may not be fiscally perfect, but someone please tell me who is perfect in just one way – just one? Maybe some people lost money but I’m quite sure he lost so much more and people have conveniently forgotten this. He did the best he could. That’s enough for me and should be enough for anyone who ever had the chance to deal with a person like him.If there is any bitterness left out there, grow up enough to let things go and look at the bigger picture and see where that takes you. Wake up.

I agree. Lane is a great guy and always helped me fix my guitars when I was a kid. Amazing builder and a great guy.

Sometimes business fail. It sucks but it’s the way of the world.

I know Fender tried to buy him out in the late 80s/early 90s when they bought Kubicki and I believe Ken Parker ripped off some of what he was doing.

Lane is a great friend and a great builder.

  3. Lane Poor Crook and Thief
    Mike Tobell

Lane Poor was and is a crook and a thief. He stole from his family, he stole from his employees, he stole from his customers.

I heard that he sold 300% of the stock in the company to anyone who whould but it and he had many people chasing him.

I would be suprised if he did not get his legs broken and was living in a ditch.

    Beware Lane Poor

    Mike

      Noah V

      Mike,

I don’t know where you get your information but my dad invested money with Lane Poor when I was a kid in the 80s.

When I was at Berklee he sold it (1995 I believe) back to Lane with no issues.

Lane is a great guy and an amazing designer. He taught me more about guitars then anyone else and as a 12 – 17 year old kid he would let me come to his factory and bother him and all the other people that worked there.

Why don’t you post your identity. It must be sad to be so pathetic that you have to hide on a message board.

I have two basses and three acoustic pickups. My friend Keith has the only black 5 string fretless Lane made.

Screw all of you on here. I have my email address up here – a real one not some free one – grow a set.

Kudos to all of you sticking up for Lane Poor-a gentleman and a genius in R and D. He made the best bass pickups I’ve ever used and those are in my Brubaker 5 string Bass Kevin Brubaker was friends with Lane and told me a little about him and his unfortunate health problems. I don’t like the word hate but I absolutely will use it to say I hate all you haters out there who obviously don’t have a fucking clue what you are talking about-I’m a pro musician, a female guitar tech, and I love Lane Poor pickups. You assholes need to find a life -it’s not often-I don’t think ever …have I used this kind of language online but I find it to be warranted and for those out there who are too chicken shit to post your name -f-you and may the Gods of Karma treat you as you have treated others and shame on me for even letting you cause me to have bad karma over this – I should know better-but think about the people you are hurting over this-his family and friends have feelings and were just trying to continue to give the public what they wanted when Lane was unable to continue on.

Let me know if you’re interested, I can send you pictures, and knowing how rare it is, let me know how much you are willing to pay for it 🙂

          Best regards

  5. Lane Poor Sighting
    Bobby F

I was at Ray Mullins Music last Fri [Swansea Mass] and was told Lane had come in that very morning. He’s supposed to be working on some new project. I got this from one of the young salesmen there that I know so it’s legit. As for what the project is I am not sure but he’s around. As for his shop I don’t really know. So I thought I’d give a shout that Lane is around the Swansea/Fall River area and is apparently busy on something.

Hope this helps at least some of you. I know there are people here looking for him for reasons of money and or work that is/was to be done. I wish I had answers.

  6. Lane Poor missing?
    Bobby F

I knew Lane a little. Back in the late 80’s his painter Chris layed down a sweet paint job on my Gibson Explorer. I worked in Fall River Mass so I’d go there after work and harrass them all the time.

I go by the mill where the shop was often and the small round sign is still up though it is in need of a paint job. Out of bussiness eh? I may get a TALL ladder and snag that sign off the building.

Lane was always cool and the shop had such a cool vibe. It’s a shame he wishes to stay hidden. Perhaps something heavy happened?

    Hope he’s well.

      Hello,

This company went out of business back in 1999. They no longer exist so you will not get your pickups. I hope you did not send cash. If you sent a check, it should not be cashed, and if you sent a money order, then go get a refund with your reciept.

Just to let you know, I am not with the company, I just found out that they went out of business when I was looking for Lane Poor pickups.

      Dear Raul:
I went by Lane Poor’s shop tonight, February 23, 2001. I’ve tried a few times and haven’t been able to find him during his regular business hours. Web page is down and he hasn’t returned phonecalls. People that I know, who do business with him regularly haven’t heard from him in a while — over 3 months. I am looking for pickups myself and wish you luck. If I do see him, I will let him know that people are looking for product.

If you still have this bass, and would like to sell it, do let me know…I’ve been looking for one for years. By now, you’ve probably figured out that Lane’s company went bust a year or so ago…Lane made a few of these as 5’s…many more 4’s…Jack Casady used to play one on his electric gigs with the Starship. The fretboard is a stepped silica/graphite composite. The design of the instrument has always intrigued me…because it looked as though it would balence well as a 5 or even as a 6 without adding a "horn" to the upper bout. Poorly balenced extended range basses are a pet peeve of mine.

Anyway…let me know…you can email me at [email protected]
