I have an old Kent that I’ve been looking to sell after I restore it. I’m not so sure of it’s actual value, and the info I’m looking up is not really giving me much other then a company name called "Hagstrom" which made some quality guitar’s in the 60’s. I’m wondering if anyone could help me. There’s a sticker on the back labled "551 Americana", which I’m assuming is the model number. Just wondering where it really came from.

  3. i have one i got in 1991 -dbl pickup-pearl inlaid on frets-pearl inlaid kent on head–kent inscribed on bridge cover and kent inscribed on each pickup–dbl horned–thin hollow body with treble cleffholes to get inside to work—no serial number anywhere–all original—will send picture if anyone interested-it still plays

      >> i’m sure its a high quality guitar, since its heavy and that tells a lot

It tells you it’s made of plywood which is the opposite of a high quality guitar. Sorry for the bad news, but you can remove the pickguard and look into the pickup and control cavities to confirm. It’s not a terrible guitar, in fact it’s a copy of a 50’s Fender Stratocaster which is just about the most desirable guitar on the planet. By all means play it and enjoy it. But do not hold the false belief that it is valuable, collectible or will appreciate in value over time. It’s a player.

: I have a Kent limited edition (or so the seller said) studio series electric guitar in perfect like new shape, im a drummer and have no idea when it comes to guitars an was wondering if anyone knows anything about it.

Its a piece of serious s**t! I have one too, its a copy of a 1950’s fender strat. Its heavy, the hardwares shitty, and the contour is not suitable. If you are trying to learn to play, then by all means use what ever you have. I just wouldn’t plan on selling this guitar for a whole lot of money.

I bought a Kent at a local pawn shop for 35 bucks I bought it because someone had put some mini Grovers on it I wanted them for a Stratobastard I built. At any rate once home I plugged it in and Wow was blown away at the sound The tone at the neck position with just a tad Reverb and it sounded like Stevie’s #1 I know folks say this but it was shocking I took the guard off and found the pups looked like double stacks but arnt It has 500k pots I cant read the cap This looked like a total revamp of the pups and pots The pups are taller and larger than any I have as Inwas gonna after deciding to keep it whole the guard is cracked so I was gonna just install the guts on it The Pups are a tad wider The wires exit through the bottom plate I plan on looking closer. The big kicker I was looking at the back and noticed little dents all over it upon holding it at the right angle I found it was writing It was a love letter by some guy named Mark and the Date March 20th 1969 That to me just made this thing very special Does anyone know about the tall wide pickups I’m speaking of I Ohmed them and all are in the 7ohm range Anyone know of Kent making a guitar with this kinda set up It is far from trash BTW and I’d put it up against any MIM even older MIJ hell My friend has a US player Strat and he says other than the neck being the old 7.5 type. It’s on par with his sound wise Plus the added coolness of having real road wear buckle rash It dont just look like it’s been there it has

i had a kent studio series that i acquired in 2002 held on to it for about ten years until it was stolen. But i loved it. It is a reliable guitar regardless of what material it is made out of it plays great and had one of the best guitar necks i have ever had the pleasure of sliding my hand up and down, altogether a real smooth play. I put some work into it though. Bought $450 lindy fraylin pick ups in it. Gave it a great blues sound. If anyone knows where i can buy one let me know i would love to get that guitar again to me it was priceless. my first guitar.

      Hi Vikki,

sadly I can’t tell you any more than you can find on Google. I’ve just picked up #136, and it’s a beauty!

I play some really nice instruments, but I love this one already.

      Take care, David

Kent is a subproduct of some apparently large japanese guitar company. Imported to america late 60’s to mid 70’s. Kent’s are all mainly hand crafted and play well. I own one myself as a rebuilding project. Kent called it quits in japan in the early 80’s.

I juat picked up an old Kent J-bass copy. WO 20482. Got it for $200. It’s sunburst with a faux turtle-shell pick guard that’s been slightly warped from age. Anyone have any info on this model? I’d love to know how much it’s worth. It plays really nice, and is heavy as all hell.

I have an old Kent bass that I bought used in ’68. Had nylon wound strings, still does, sounds great thru my Kustom 250.

In response to the earlier posts, regarding
Kent Bass…I had to go look and found the
same W.O. 20781 part number…with an ovesized 7..made in Korea.. I picked this exact bass up in 2006 at a fund raiser ( Syracuse Schools’ ex. Dist. Super. had kept it nice, but it had wiring failures after 35 years )
Want to say, I’ve read expert’s say it was a short lived mid 60’s line.Kent’s were similar to the American Kay’s.. This is a lot of fun, I assume a maple neck.. installed active EMG P Bass pickups, new Fender hardware w tortoise shell pickguard, and it sings well too, for an amateur instrument.

I have 60’s Kent Sunburst Jass style bass I’d like to part with. It appears to be all original but the bridge cover is missing. A screw seems to be striped that hold in one of the pickups. As you try to make a pickup adjustment it pushes in, but comes back up with a few turns of the screw. I consider it to be minor. The bass show normal ware. I haven’t been able to find a value on it. It’s in decent condition considering it was use for many gigs before I got it. Knowing there are folks looking to have one, I don’t know how to make the contacts.

I have a model 529 Mont Clair – sunburst 4-string bass. It still has the decal on the back of the tuning head. It wasn’t stored properly, so the neck has just a hint of bow to it. Anyone have any suggestions how I can straighten it?

I purchased my Kent Bonanza 12-string accoustic in 1969 or ’70. Had a great sound usually reserved for much more expensive 12-strings. Neck had a very slight bow which was easily adjusted out. Tailpiece broke and I replaced that. Otherwise, the wood has done nothing but mellow with age, and it still sings with the best. If its the same model, you got it for a reasonable price. Unfortunately, Kent guitars were made in Japan and never really got a chance to prove themselves.

      1. I purchased an old house in
        Raystan

I purchased an old house in Nevada a few years ago and while in the attic, I found a Kent 12 string guitar setting on a rafter. I also found a cardboard box up there that had baby booties, birth announcements, a wind up music box baby’s cereal bowl with a clown in it and some faded, color photos of twins born in 1952. The guitar was filthy. Dust and rodent droppings all over it. Strings were rusted but there. I contacted the previous owner of my “new” house and he said he didn’t even know that stuff was up there. He said it must’ve belonged to the original owner’s of the house since that’s who he purchased the home from years ago.

I cleaned up the guitar real good. I had to hose out the soundhole because the rodent droppings and dried urine in there, a vacuum wouldn’t work. The wood dried out, it took several days to dry and it looked pretty good thereafter. I got the strings cleaned of rust using steel wool. The guitar sounded too tinny to my ears (I like deep thumping bass from a guitar) so I decided to sell it on auction and got $50.00 for it. Also the music box bowl I found in my attic turned out to be worth more than the guitar! I got $65.00 for it! Now if only those baby booties were worth something!!

I have installed a set of tweedtone single coils in my fenix strat coupled to a dennis cornell mid boost system and its as good as a fender EC strat but about a £1000 cheaper. On the back of this I then installed two of Kent,s hpan vintage humbuckers to my hohner es335 copy, results were great again. So thank you Kent,as without winning the lottery,I don,t suppose I,ll ever be able to afford a vintage strat or 335.But who cares I,m as happy as a pig in s***.

I have a kent acoustic that was given to me for Christmas almost 20 years ago. The model number is kf210, its small and from what I’m told its a rather cheap guitar. The tail piece broke on it and has been replaced, and it has new strings on it. It still plays very well. If anyone has eny idea if it is valuable please send a message.

plus a device that touches the strings from underneath, its a lever
          thanks

      4. Re: unknown kent guitar and value sought
        Michael

I also have an old Kent. It’s a strat design like the Hagstrom I, with yellow/red/black sunburst, an aluminum pickguard, two white single coils, clean white original knobs (one lever and two rounds; though I don’t know what the symbols stand for), rosewood finger board, and what I call a floating bridge (not screwed down). I’ve tried to find information about it, but only know it’s related to the Hagstrom line that tried marketing in the US through Japanese production in the sixties. If you have information about it, I’d appreciate some guidance. I’ll borrow a friend’s digital camera and send you an attachment if you like. I have the original case, but the handles broken. But the guitar is clean as a whistle. The original owner didn’t like it because it was noisy and left it under his bed for thirty years. I found the bridge ground wire wasn’t attached to the bridge.

I also have another unusual guitar. It’s a ’62 Gibson EB2 bass. People tell me it’s an EBO, but the sticker you see through the f-hole says EB2. It’s also a sunburst. Why do you collect Kents?

      1. Old Gibson Guitar
        Gladys Strickland

My uncle passed away in 1984 and my aunt has kept his old guitar in a room over her garage (with other junk). She is now 87 years old and in an assisted living facility. I am curious about the guitar – don’t think it is very valuable but thought I could get it cleaned up and let my grandchildren play with it. Inside the guitar there is a label that state “KENT – Maxwell Meyers in Texas, Southland Musical, model XT 350 Made in Korea” and on the neck there is a a sticker that says “WD20678. Is there anyway I can find out about this guitar and if it is worth having it cleaned? Thanks so much for your response.

If it’s a semi-hollow body electric 12 string (mine’s a sunburst) with the slanted forward pickup the current blue-book is from $250 to $450.

I paid $70 for mine and put another $80 into a new bridge saddle, nut, strings and set-up. Also had the electronics gone through. For $150 I have a guitar that plays better than my old $1500 Guild. I recomend this guitar to anyone who can find one. They are great!

    1. Re: Kent Armstrong pickups?
      Liam Evans

Probably original, possibly hand wound. I bought a couple of these in 1990 in the UK for about 30 GBP each. Mine are uncovered, and I’m sure the model is long out of date. I cant find any other reference to these pickups anywhere and when I called the number for help with wiring, Kent answered himself! So I’m pretty sure these pickups were not mass produced. Brilliant for heavy rock, pretty useless for clean. They are blueprinted from the original Gibson PAFs, which I have the same complaint about, so it’s not Kents’ fault.

: I have just bought a second hand Jackson custom shop guitar with what I was told were hand wound Kent Armstrong pickups. On taking the pickups off the guitar, they are called Kent Armstrong Design with the reference numbers HRO-1 and HSD0-1. Can you tell me whether these are actual Kent Armstrong pickups, or budget versions produced under licence by another manufacturer?

  16. I *think* I have a Kent.. Can anyone help?
    Jason Ratke

Hi, I have an old, kind of beat up guitar that I never knew what it could possibly be, since the brand name on the headstock was missing. It was a plate of some kind, and it looked like it bolted or screwed on. The guitar looks like a copy of a Fender Mustang or Jaguar, with tobacco sunburst coloring. It has a white pick guard, and two single coil pickups. I’d like to know if it is really a Kent, and if so, where I can get parts to restore it. Also, if anyone has more links or resources on Kent guitars, I’d love it…

    Thanks,
    Jason

    1. Re: I *think* I have a Kent.. Can anyone help?
      Jose

      Jason:
I don’t think it’s a Kent, since Kent had its logo inlaid
at the headstock; It could be a KAY, which used metal plates
      screwed on the headstock.

The 820 Series; I have three of those including the 12 string version. The 3-pickup version (823) sucks, pass on it. When those 820s didn’t sell, they came up with a "strat"
version, (lord, why does everyone have to have a strat!),
and that didn’t work either, so they bit the dusta.
An expert on Kents said that a Korean kompany then bought the Kent name from whoever owned it. (big deal, it’s not like they were buying the "Gibson" name).

Switch 1 is master volume plus MotherBucker coil tap
Switch 2 is middle coil tap plus tone for bridge and middle
Switch 3 is neck coil tap and neck tone

I got in contact with Kent and I told him exactly the sound I wanted for my handmade electric guitars. I was so impressed by the sound of Kent’s pickups (and believe or not, it took me over 7 years to find what I call the perfect pickup) that I now exclussively mount he’s pickups on my guitars. My favorite pickup is the super distortion humbucker, the best sounding pickup for heavy gain applications. Motherbucker is great for heavy stuff!
PAF+ is soooo clear and distinct at the front! I can still get pinched harmonics! Waiting for my Dimarzio Fred to go with it 🙂

Wish he’d bring his prices of bridges down a little tho’!

Our culture is slowly being rapped little by little and nothing seems to be done to stop it. Any how, I have heard that your pick ups are quite good for lap steel guitars and are similar in a way to the old Rickenbacker sound, Could you please send me some information or e-mail me the best way to get in touch with you folks. ONE FACT I SHOULD LIKE TO POINT OUT CONCERNING THE ABOVE PICKUPS
I BOUGHT 2 AS RELACEMENTS FOR THE NECK + BRIDGE POSITIONS ON MY ’57
REISSUE JAPANESE STRAT. HOWEVER, WHEN PUTTING THEM IN I FOUND THAT
THEY ARE CONSIDERABLY DEEPER THAN THE ORIGINALS– THUS THE GUITAR
WOULD REQUIRE RE-ROUTING.THE SOUND IS GREAT BUT I THINK YOU SHOULD STATEON YOUR CATELOGUES IF THE GUITAR ITSELF WOULD REQUIRE MODIFICATION WHEN PURCHASING CERTAIN PICKUPS.
