vintage Dan Armstrong neck?
Last year I bought a 70 Dan Armstrong guitar off Ebay. Unfortunately, the neck has a non repairable twist to it (ripped off by another unscrupulous Ebayer!).
I know it's a long shot but..... Anyone got a vintage neck for sale??? Or even a decent re-issue?
If I can't find anything I'll put the parts up for sale soon. Good thing is it comes with the rather rare humbucking pick-up.
Thanks

Need a Schaller tuner
I would look on Ebay for an extra tuner. From what I know these were stock items (Schaller at first, then Grovers), so these should be available if you continue looking. You're more likely to find a complete set for sale rather than just one tuner, but then you'd have plenty of extras.

I have an all original dan armstrong fretless bass in excellent condition with original case, paperworks etc. What kind of sale value does it have?
Dan Armstrong case problems
I have a 1970 dan armstrong plexi guitar with original case. The guitar has some small pits in the plexi that match up with areas where the plush in the case seems to be "flattened". I'm just wondering if the case lining isn't producing some weak acid that's causing the pits. Has anyone else noticed the problem?
Floyd Rose with a Dan Armstrong Plexi?

MD pick up
Hi, i've recently bought a 1999 reissue and it came with a single coil carved with the letters MD on it's back. That makes me a little confused because i thought the MD was a humbucker. Need your light.
Re: MD pick up
Hi
I have the MD pickup. It's a high output P-90 pickup. I confirmed this with Kent Armstrong himself via email. It's a great pickup..i don't think the current re-issues have the MD pickup.

Dan Armstrong logo on origoinal pickguards
Could someone with an original DA please tell me whether the 'Dan Armstrong - Ampeg' lettering was set / etched / stamped into the pickguard or was it just something like a transfer that sat on the top of it. Mine doesn't have any of the lettering left and I'm trying to work out whether it's an original where the lettering has worn away or a repro.
Thanks
Rupert

I just checked my bass that I bought in 1970 and it appears to have been done on an engraving machine. It is very fine and filled in with white paint.

Smooth versus ridged scratchplate / truss rod cover
I've read in several places that the texture of the scratchplate and truss rod cover changed in the '69 / '70 period from smooth to more textured or the other way round (I can't remember immediately).
Can anyone give me some idea of the difference between the two - was the smooth one absolutely glassy smooth, was the ridged one really obviously so?.
I've got what i think is a '70 DA with Schaller machineheads and having some idea of what the scratchplate should feel like would really help.
Cheers
Rupert

Need info on 69 or 70 Dan Armstrong
Hello I have a DA with serial number A2149D - I think it's either a late 1969 or an early 1970. Is there anyway to tell for sure?
Also, I'm looking to get an idea of what it's worth - I've got the Grover tuners, the rosewood saddle, and the Rock Treble pickup. Guitar has a few scratches but is in VG condition and plays well.
Thanks!
Re: Need info on 69 or 70 Dan Armstrong
I had to look twice, as I have A1249D. Mine is definitely 1969 and I think close to the end of the year. All came with the rosewood bridges. A 1970 will likely have the slimmer neck and as you have noted, Grovers. another difference is pick guards, rough late, smooth early. Another reason I think mine might be towards the end of 1969 because 1249 has a thick neck, Shaller machines and smooth formica ?8^) I know it is all original, as I knew the specific guitar when new and bought it from the second owner a few years later. I'll figure you have seen this site but link it for reference here.
http://www.danarmstrong.org/
"At some point in late 69 or early 1970 a large shipment of Dan Armstrong clear guitars were being held up at the Ampeg factory as the Shaller company had sent them a large shipment of tuners that were missing the nuts & washers. A call was placed to Shaller, but the missing parts never seemed to arrive. Knowing that customers were waiting for their instruments, Dan said "I just walked acrossed the street to the local Grover dealership and told them we needed a lot of tuners, and that we would continue needing them. They provided us with them, and we just never returned to Shallers."
I'd love to accumulate the rest of the original pickups before finally saying goodbye to it but this may be the year. I have the JT CB and RT.
Ebay is probably the best price guide and condition as well as included accessories will count. someone kept listing an oldie for $4,000 and I don't see it anymore. I don't know if it sold or whether he changed his mind. Reviewing the market a couple of years ago, I thought if I put 1249 up on consignment at a local shop, I'd want $3,000 and that's very nice condition (virtually scratch free), three pickups and the case. I have seen one pickup caseless offerings sell for $2,000 and more quite frequently over the past few years.

'70 DA guitar question
Does anybody know if the bridges from the recent reissues would fit one of the original DA guitars? And if so, where I could get one?
Eventually I want to sell it with the proper bridge, but if anyone out there wants to make an offer...
Solution for strengthening weak Dan Armstrong Neck?
Hi,
has anybody experienced a lot of neck movement on their Dan Aemstrong plexi guitar?
I have a smoked finish 1999 re-issue and, like the 1960s originals, it has a weak neck which moves a lot.
Ampeg product support said the solution was to use smaller bolts, fill up the holes in the neck and bolt it from the outside.
I've seen two techs and they said it's not the neck joint that is the problem, but the neck itself which is moving.
Any ideas on how to strengthen the neck?
Luca
Re: Solution for strengthening weak Dan Armstrong Neck?
You might want to check and see if the truss rod nut has backed off. I can't imagine so but it may never have been snugged up either. You will be able to tell if it is loose if the washer is floating around (you can rotate it, or it rattles).
Truss rods don't adjust action, per se but do control stiffness a little bit. What they do mostly is draw back or relax the bow of the neck. If the nut was never tightened, it could make for a sloppy neck. Don't crank down mercilessly on it. Once snug (back it off first if in doubt)ther will be about 180 degrees (half turn) of adjustment tighter.
I have never heard of refitting the bolts but that might be a re-issue issue. My '69 has the thicker baseball bat neck and is pretty rigid.
Visit some music shops and chat up the luthier if in doubt or unfamiliar. Again, I've bever heard or seen a neck mounting mod mentioned by owners or sellers but i do live under a rock and may be that unfamiliar myself. ;)

according to kent armstrong, him and his father only produced about 350 guitars and basses total. not sure about the 2 pu guitar but i own one of only 2 "factory fretless" basses they ever made.
Value of an Armstrong Londoner guitar?
Anybody have an idea of what the value range on a mahogany Londoner is?
Thanks,
Logan
1969 DA bass on eBay - worth it?
there's a 1969 Dan Armstrong bass on eBay right now at about $700, it might not have original pickguard, I remember them being brown and saying Ampeg Dan Armstrong on them - the one on ebay has a black pickguard. Any idea what this axe is worth?

Parts & Info
Hello all! I just bought a 2007 Ada6 reissue that is in need of a pickup selector switch. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Also, are there schematics for this guitar online somewhere?
And lastly, there were quite a few pickups made over the years, do any of the previous pickups fit the 2007 reissue, and if so, which ones?
Thanks!!! --Steev
Re: Parts & Info
Kent Armstrong has some posts further down the list here. He mentions pickups and I believe was involved in the last re-issue build.
Might be worth dropping him a line.
I know this is an old topic, relatively speaking.
