Dan Armstrong Guitar Parts

Hi all
Hopefully this will reach the right people.
I have a 69 Dan Armstrong Guitar but need some parts...Knobs, Truss rod cover, pick guard.
Anybody have any spares for these guitars?

Leon

Re: Dan Armstrong Parts

Leon - there are two pickguards for sale on ebay at the moment, although one includes the entire electronics assembly and is therefore expensive. The other pickguard has some minor damage around the switch hole and is later than '69, but it might work for the time being. Knobs come up periodically on ebay as these were also used on the V-4 amps. Hope this is helpful. Rgds, Scott

Can anyone help with my Dan's history ?

Hi, in the early 80,s I purchased a Dan Armstrong in west London. It had the original case with METRO sprayed on and a couple of round stickers on each side. Sort of fairy Lord Of The Rings type pictures. The guitar is really early without going up to the loft I think the number is A434D. What is weird however (the guitar is pretty much mint and at some time someone has put schallers on headstock) is that instead of the wood gr an English folk ain finish headstock and pick guard these have been replaced - a really good job with black with a white border. Someone has spent money on these alterations - and no it is a real Dan Armstrong not some Japanese copy - this was not done in somebodys garage. Does any body out their have any leads on this guitar, at first I thought it may have been a prototype, however an English folk type band were around in the 60,s and 70,s the first album goes for around $400 I believe. After 3 albums they went electric and the main man /guitarist was called Duncan and died really young in his early 40's. The band was called Metro as sprayed on case. Perhaps someone could confirm this as with the black additions it does look really striking and I would love to know the history. Thank you.

Schallers were found on the first couple of years of production. Some of them even split capstan posts. The definitive site for research is
http://www.danarmstrong.org/

A434D would place it early in the 1969 production. My 1969/1970 is A1249D Subtract 100 from the number and your 434 is early indeed. Mine has split Schallers. At one point Dan ran out of Schallers, bought a lot of Grovers but hen reverted for a bit to the Schallers about 1970 but eventually later in 1970 went with the Grovers once again. The site discusses all this. I have had 1249 since 1976 and had in hand as a friend of the original owner in 1970.

It is not unusual to see the pickguards replaced, as they often broke at the jack.

I hope you are still enjoying it. They have become scarcer eah year on the market.

Phil - I have a lot of experience in dating original Dan Armstrong guitars. If you send me a couple pics including one of the serial number and headstock/pickups/bridge and the case I can kind of tell you what might be original and what's changed. Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to tell you much about the band name stenciled on the case, but that was certainly very common back in the '70's.

Dan history

Dear Scott,

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you, but thanks for your reply. I shall take some more photos as the ones I had I have sent out. If you could text me on vinylresseeurectionAgmail.com or give me a call won 07982407934 and give me your address I shall happily send you the photos.

Thanks for your e-mail and would really appreciate any info. you could dig up. Mick Jones played a Dan at the Harlsden gigs in 77 but the 10 second footage is so frantic it is not possible to eyeball the scratchboard. it was purchased from The Clash area though.

Thanks again - Philip James. It wants the code in the image to send e-mail but I will have to recheck as this is from memoory and the guitar is in the loft. thanks.A434D

Serial D213A

That was MY Bass!!! My father gave it to me around 69 or 70.

When I moved from New York to Anaheim CA I had my Friend, George Cole, install the Slide Pots.

Bernardo Rico installed NEW Frets and the Mother of Pearl Fret Inlays.

It was Stolen out of my VW Bug in Anaheim in 1972. I called the Police but the told me "it's probably in Mexico by Now!"

Imagine my SHOCK when I saw it again!!!

The SAME Serial Number

The SAME Slide Pots

The SAME Enlarged Fret Markers

it's SAD that someone dropped it and Cracked the Lucite!!!

Dan Armstrong Guitar found on curb

Hi. I picked up an old and very dusty Dan Armstrong guitar by someone's trash. It's heavy and it looks like it's been painted black. Would love to have someone tell me what I have here and if it's worth restoring. I'll be happy to send pictures. Thanks in advance for your help.

the guitar found

It may be a Cellulose Butyrate guitar. And there were only 8 made, as I understand. They don't sound good, but very rare. Might be worth talking to the people who live near where you found it. Certainly can't hurt. If it's actually one of those guitars, it's really sad it was discarded like that. They obviously wouldn't have known what it's worth. If it's wood, it's not such a big deal.

Found guitar

Hey man. I have a Dan Armstrong 1970's guitar, not a plexiglass model. It's thick, made of wood. It originally had a sliding humbucker. If you've got one of these. It's rare and would be worth restoring.

vintage Dan Armstrong neck?

Last year I bought a 70 Dan Armstrong guitar off Ebay. Unfortunately, the neck has a non repairable twist to it (ripped off by another unscrupulous Ebayer!).
I know it's a long shot but..... Anyone got a vintage neck for sale??? Or even a decent re-issue?
If I can't find anything I'll put the parts up for sale soon. Good thing is it comes with the rather rare humbucking pick-up.

Thanks

dan armstrong neck

No luck. How is the neck in terms of playability?
Can you post pics and give me some idea of how much you want for it?
I would LOVE to be able to play this thing!
Thanks
Ian

dan armstrong neck

the neck is straight, and original, with bolts. it's pretty beat up, but stock, with tuners. it's the second version--is that the schaller one? (i haven't looked at my armstrongs for some time, i'm afraid). i haven't done any research on value. does anyone have any ideas?

Need a Schaller tuner

I would look on Ebay for an extra tuner. From what I know these were stock items (Schaller at first, then Grovers), so these should be available if you continue looking. You're more likely to find a complete set for sale rather than just one tuner, but then you'd have plenty of extras.

For Sale: Early 69 Dan Armstrong Bass Prototype

1971 Dan Armstrong Fretless

I have an all original dan armstrong fretless bass in excellent condition with original case, paperworks etc. What kind of sale value does it have?

Dan Armstrong case problems

I have a 1970 dan armstrong plexi guitar with original case. The guitar has some small pits in the plexi that match up with areas where the plush in the case seems to be "flattened". I'm just wondering if the case lining isn't producing some weak acid that's causing the pits. Has anyone else noticed the problem?

Floyd Rose with a Dan Armstrong Plexi?

Has anyone tried to install a Floyd Rose tremolo on a Dan Armstrong Plexi guitar? Would it be possible? I have a 2008 re-issue which feels like it could be fantastic with a tremolo

MD pick up

Hi, i've recently bought a 1999 reissue and it came with a single coil carved with the letters MD on it's back. That makes me a little confused because i thought the MD was a humbucker. Need your light.

Re: MD pick up

Hi

I have the MD pickup. It's a high output P-90 pickup. I confirmed this with Kent Armstrong himself via email. It's a great pickup..i don't think the current re-issues have the MD pickup.

Dan Armstrong logo on origoinal pickguards

Could someone with an original DA please tell me whether the 'Dan Armstrong - Ampeg' lettering was set / etched / stamped into the pickguard or was it just something like a transfer that sat on the top of it. Mine doesn't have any of the lettering left and I'm trying to work out whether it's an original where the lettering has worn away or a repro.

Thanks

Rupert

The Dan Armstrong logo was engraved into the pickguard. I am a 1970 Dan Armstrong Bass original owner.

I just checked my bass that I bought in 1970 and it appears to have been done on an engraving machine. It is very fine and filled in with white paint.
