Re: Parts & Info

I can't help on the selector switch front, but in answer to your question about whether any of the pre reissue pickups fit the 2007 one - I've read several reviews of the reissue that say the pickups aren't interchangeable.

As for schematics try this page:-

http://members.aol.com/bluemuse/ampeg.html

That should help out - there's a brochure and a schematic, although it may relate to the original rather than the reissue, but it should give you some idea of what's going on there.

A few DA guitar questions - serial, pickup, selector switch

Hi,

I've just managed to get a DA plexi guitar, and hope someone out there can help with a few questions I have:-

1) The serial number is 2703 - can anyone give me an idea as to likely date of manufacture (the guitar still has the Schaller tuners and smooth Formica scratchplate and headstock)

2) The switch only has two settings, one of which seems to just cut the signal from the pickups, like a kill switch. Does anyone else's do this or is it (as I suspect) a later 'modification'.

3) One of the pickups I got seems to have been cast in resin, and has a sticker on the bottom that says 'Kent Armstrong' and 'Rock Treble' on it, as well as having RT scratched in to the base. As I don't think the reissue pickups would work with an original guitar was this a pickup made for the guitar in the years in between the original guitars being made and the reisssues?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Dan Armstrong Londoner Woody Schematics?

I recently bought a Dan Armstrong Londoner on eBay. It was not working. The first repair man got it to make some sound but thought the pick up needed rewinding. I took the guitar back and gave it to my tech of 20 years. He is looking for schematics to put the guitar back to orginal specs. He thought maybe there was a pre amp in it? Any thoughts. Any spare parts? Help. I have been after this guitar for 10 years.
Thanks for anyones help.
Michael

Re: Dan Armstrong Londoner Woody Schematics?

I have a working Woody long bass version with a neck break.

You could buy it and between the two you can swap out parts intil you track down the failed component. Then you can either part it out, sell as is or have the neck repaired and then you'll have TWO!

You already know this bass is rarer than hens teeth.

I already have a buyer lined up, but thought I'd give you a chance since you have been waiting ten years. Also good to share what you've learned about this model. Info is scare and not a single photo yet in a year of searching.

Re: Dan Armstrong pickups

: I am looking for original 60s Dan Armstrong pickups besides CB.

Very occasionally seen on Ebay but the oldsters are getting tough to find. I have a CB, RT and JT but they have #1249 attached and cased. I honestly wish I had them all, to round things out before this one finally goes. This may be the year it sells.

My '06 DA Reissue.

Got one of these - first DA I've held since I looked over an original back in the late '70s. So far, I like it a lot. The action is nice and low, it came strung with .009 strings like I prefer, and it sounds GREAT through my 100W 112 combo. Took me a while to find the "Made in Japan" stamp - both it and the serial number are on opposite sides of the base of the neck. Don't know about the first reissues, but these appear to have the original fatter neck profile. I even like the new bridge - after I'd had it a week I started to get a bit of buzz out of the 1st string. I simply removed the saddle and shimmed it with a bit of aluminum foil. That's working like a champ. The more I play it, the more I like it...would like to try the thinner neck, though. Just to compare. So far, so good...

Dan Armstrong guitar ID

I recently aquired a Dan Armstrong clear guitar . The serial number appears to be A2475D. Can someone decode the SN? when was it made approx? It has an ST pickup and just needs a bit of cleaning and tarnish removal
D

Your pickup

David, This is Barney Spector in Connecticut. I'll pay $50 more than whatever Teve offers for your ST. I have one and it's the hottest, sweetest pickup I have ever owned and I want another. Barney

Re: Dan Armstrong guitar ID

(Originally posted on 01:42:04 7/18/06)

Hello,

Your guitar should be from the last batch made: already the ST pickup says this (the older ones came with RT and CB (Rock Treble and Country Bass) pickups, and the newer ones with the RT and ST-Sustain Treble), but also the serial number suggests maybe even as late as 1971. I once purchased a replacement neck from Ampeg and the number was in the 2800's: they told me that there were a few more necks made than bodies, right when they stopped making them.

I am very interested in buying the ST pickup from you. I have an original 1969 RT pickup to offer, plus cash. Your guitar will still be in all original shape and you'll be richer. Please email me to teye@teye.com - I will pay good money.

Ampeg made approximately 8 black lucite guitars and basses. This 1970 model can be found at Mars Music®

Dan states "we bought some butyrate plastic sheets (black) to try it out as we understood that butyrate was 'moldable' - so we made 8 guitars and 8 basses and they sounded sort of dead, so we gave up the molding idea. Acrylic (plexiglass) shrinks some 20% in a mold, and would require more machining than starting with sheets!"

Due to their rarity however, the black Dan Armstrong guitars and basses are highly sought after and very collectable instruments today. Despite their problems, they tend to fetch relatively high prices as a result.

Hope this helps.

Are The Prices for Real? Six String

Reviewing a recent auction in GB and am somewhat stunned by the realized price of an original. With currency conversion, that's a bit more than three grand USD.

Are these becoming that rare?

Dan Armstrong mahogany bass with sliding p'up for sale

I am selling a Dan Armstrong 4-string bass guitar with solid mahogany body and single sliding pickup. These are the guitars that Dan Armstrong made when he moved to England for a period around 1975. A 6-string version of the same shape and finish as this bass guitar can be seen at http://www.danarmstrong.org/images/wood_guirar_large.jpg . The bass is in good condition generally, with some small chips to the rear of the body, probably where it stood on a guitar stand, and a very few minor marks to the front. The neck and electrics (single sliding pickup, tone and volume pots) are fine. Scale length is approximately 34". It has no case, but lives in a Warwick gig bag. Please email me at bobmoore@ntlworld.com if you would like to see some photos of the bass. I am asking £600 ovno. I am in England, so courier charges within UK will be about £40, overseas shipping costs unknown but I would guess at £100 or more? All to be confirmed!
