St. Louis Pickguards

Okay guys, do the St. Louis pickguards fit the old DA's or not? I have a VERY low serial number 1970 that I'd like to restore as much as possible so I can retire it to a display case. Cheers!

Hey Kyle, what's up brother. I think you can get parts from St. Louis Music for you DA. I just got a reissue bridge from them for my 1970, and a pickup from Kent Armstrong. Hit me back if you need a way to contact either of them. LATE!!!

Re: Need Parts original or copy

i believe they were schaller chrome mini's made for 3 on a side headstocks the inline ones can be different.at least this is what my original 70' has and about every other one i've seen has, also the aftermarket pickguard from st louis is fine but the bolt pattern is a little different if you have an original good luck

whats a source for a saddle/bridge/ tailpiece for a lucite?

I've got a little music store in a rural area. I'm trying to find a bridge/saddle & tailpiece that will fit a univox lucite 6 string for a customer-sorry, no date or model number. The dimensions of the saddle are approximately: 2 1/2"x 3/8", the tailpiece 1 1/2"x3 1/2" with 4 screw holes 1/4" from edge. Where can I find them?? Help!

what kind of case fits DAs...

Anybody know what kind of cases will fit a Dan Armstrong lucite resonably well?
ie: les paul, SG etc....Mine needs a case and i doubt i will come acoss a "real" DA one...

Re: what kind of case fits DAs...

: Anybody know what kind of cases will fit a Dan Armstrong lucite resonably well?

if you dont want to pay an arm & a leg for a custom job
then what i ended up doing was getting a generic rectangle case one of those "fits all deals" and cutting some high density foam to keep the headstock in place and sort of wedge a piece at the end to keep the guitar from sliding
to and fro
anyway good luck

Re: what kind of case fits DAs...

Yes finding a case for an Armstrong is hell...your best bets is to find a guitar case that is not specifically designed for strats and pauls, as of course the DA does not fit in them.

I bought a generic rectangular case for my 70, bit my re-issue came with one that fit it nicely...it is not form fitted custom job like an SKB case is for a Strat, bit it does the job. In fact I called SKB years ago to see if they had a template for a DA and they said something to the effect of "What's that?" But that was years ago and since the re-issues, they may have one. Worth a try.

Take your guitar with you to the store, and try cases out. That'd be quickest, however.

Original D/A for possible trade.

I have a 1970's Dan Armstrong that I would be willing to trade for a black Gibson Les Paul Custom w/ a mahogony neck (no maple).
My D/A is extremely clean and comes w/ 2 pickups. The humbucker and a single coil.
It also comes w/ 2 saddles. The traditional wood and fretwire, and one that is just wood like a Danelectro.
The only things not original is the switch and the case.
Thanks

Anyone selling a DA?

I am in need of a Dan Armstrong guitar.. I would prefer a reissue cuz I have heard some stuff about them not going out of tune as bad, but an OG is fine by me as well. It's a plus if they have been modified in a few ways too, like if the bridge was changed or the pickups changed (obviously it depends on to what)

I'd prefer a clear one, but a smoke colored one is cool too..

thanks, email me if you have one

Sorry - forget it! There are so few Dan Armstrong of this type, that you will hardy find any replacement parts! Bill Lawrence made the PU, and as far as I know has he died some years ago. Try to contact Kent Armstrong. I found the following article:
When Mo Clifton approached Kent Armstrong to build a custom pickup for the original version of this bass, he asked him to mould one with holes in so that it could be placed on rails - the idea being to find the optimum position for the pickup between bridge and neck. As there were several different usable tones that resulted from being able to move the pickup easily, Mo decided to offer Kent's sliding pickup as standard.

So, with just one pickup you can quickly change from a deep, percussive double bass thump to a singing fretless tone with the minimum of hassle - be careful not to force the pickup to either end of its travel on the rails, though. Some of the early Dan Armstrong bass guitars (Dan was Kent's dad, if you weren't already aware of this) had sliding pickups, as did the Gibson Grabber, so it's not a far-fetched or new-fangled idea.

Mo Clifton's craftsmanship is always excellent and this bass is a 'Mini' work
of art.

I am looking for a 1970s bridge complete for a Dan Armstrong lucite can anyone help me out there??

Hey for all you guys looking for parts for Dan Armstrong's try this. vintageamp@aol.com. The guy's name is Gregg Hopkins. He was referred to me in my long search for parts. He recently co-authored a book on Ampeg restoration. I have contacted him about some parts myself. Once I find more sources I'll post back. Good luck.

Re: Dan Armstrong Bridge

I'm looking for a bridge to replace the bullshit popsicle stick bridge that's on my 1970. That bridge blows!!! What can I replace it with that has string adjustment?

Re: Dan Armstrong Bridge

I recently aquired one of the re-issues on Ebay. It plays much better than my 1970...and the bridge is a vast improvement. It has individual little saddles for the strings. Hey it blows too...but it's better than a popsicle stick with a piece of fretwire over it. I remember someone on this list here said they had Armstrong parts, so see if there's any of these re-issue bridges lying about.

Also, as a footnote, this re-issue (which is translucent black) has an MD (Modern Drive) pickup as well as the stabdard RT. Not to bad for an Armstrong pickup. few years a go I had a friend of mine mod a Jackson J90-C to slide into the Armstrong enclosure, and it's hella loud, indeed.

Humbucker pickup

Hi,
If anyone has -- or knows where to get -- an ORIGINAL, humbucker slide-in pickup for the Dan Armstrong plexi, please let me know. From what I understand, the humbucker was added to the original 6 (country treble/bass, rock treble/bass, jazz treble/bass) just before the guitars ended their run in '71.
