I have one of the transparent black ones. It plays better than my 69…waaaay better. The neck is slimmer and it *almostr* stays in tune…pretty high praise for a DA!.
are you interested in selling it? How much did you get it for?

Hi I’m lefty player and a fan of this guitar – I would love to buy yours too
Tell me please, I’m in Paris France Thx and Cheers

I have a left handed lucite Dan Armstrong guitar, perfect condition, with custom pre-amp toggle switches. I bought it in ’69 from an engineer friend that worked with Jimi Hendrix back then. There was only one other one like and as far as I know, Paul McCartney owns it. I would be interested in selling if you are still looking.
As far as I know only two lefty Dan Armstrong clear guitars were made. One guitar and one bass. Both owned by Sir Paul McCartney. If anybody wants a closeup pix of paul, I have one I got from Linda McCartney. Pretty cool and very rare guitar indeed.
Cheers, billy
Early serial # Dan Armstrong. All original, Country Bass, and Rock Treble Pickups. Extra electronics ( original ) , Extra NECK !!!! ( one thin , one fat) Extra thumbscrews ! Good condition . Sounds and plays great ! Non original … but better fitting hard case included.
Please contact me for details
Just curious really about my guitar – when it was made and how many. It has 348 stamped in it. Unfortunately I daren’t slide the pickup due to a break in the wire right where it enters the plastic casing. It’s ok, the instrument sounds fine with the pickup where it is but if anyone has a suggestion, do call.
Does anyone have an original Dan Armstrong manual in good shape that they are willing to sell/ trade.
I have many original parts / necks etc.
Do you happen to have an original pickguard? Turns out the re-issues don’ fit properly.
Unfortunately I have no manual of any kind…but I’d sure be inclinded to purchase a pickguard.
Cheers
Yes I do
I have unused original pickguards that were purchased from the factory 1971.

How do you date a Dan Armstrong?

Serial number give a rough indication of when your guitar was made. They were only made between 1969 and either late 70 or early 71. There are other ways to date them if your guitar is all original

This popular thread has been given its own page : Univox clear guitar
: In other words, I really can’t tell how much of a copy this Univox guitar really was. Any info is much appreciated!
I should have done this first, but… Having looked at a photo of the reissue (http://www.harmony-central.com/Newp/1998/Dan-Armstrong-Guitars1-larg.jpg), it looks like the Univox was very much a copy except for the headstock and the pickup configuration. Even the dual bottom strap mounts were copied. Oh, and the fingerboard is not ebony, it’s rosewood (can you say "cheaper," boys and girls?).
In any case, if anybody knows when Univox sold these clear guitars, please post it. Thanks again.
I bought mine new in 1972 at North Bend Oregon.
your guitar is indeed a copy of an ampeg dan armstrong(the type of guitar played by such guitarists as dave grohl and the guy from sugar ray)this can be cofirmed by checking out http://www.univox.org/guitar
hey,
i recently came across a clear univox guitar like the dan armstrong pic. it looks exactly like the pic and was wondering if anyone knows anything about it?
i have a 70’s model lucite "conrad" guitar armstrong copy .do you know what it is worth?
Well, I’ve done this backwards — posted a question, then did more research and found the answers (Believe me, I have searched for info before but found nothing. It’s been a while, though).
Behold the Univox copy of the Dan Armstrong:
http://www.univox.org/guitars/lucy.html
I have a Univox guitar that’s clear arylic. It’s not a Dan Armstrong clone — the headstock is different, for one thing — but it was clearly influenced (ha ha) by the Dan. Just wondering if anyone else has seen one or knows anything about them.
I got mine secondhand in the early ’80s, and I don’t know it’s history. It has a 4-bolt, 24-fret neck; generic Gibson-style headstock; rosewood fretboard and headstock veneer. The neck is 3 strips of maple with thin strips of rosewood between them. The pickup cavity can hold 2 humbuckers mounted side-by-side (like a 3 pickup Les Paul without the neck pickup). The pickguard was butchered when I bought the guitar and is now long gone, but it looked like walnut or rosewood. All controls and the jack are front-mounted on the pickguard. The bridge is a metal plate with a 3/8-inch (approx.) strip of wood laying on top, and that wood strip has saddle strip of off-white material slotted into it.
I also have an actual Dan Armstrong, but I can’t compare the two guitars because (A) my real Dan was completely Frankensteined before I bought it (locking whammy bridge, locking nut, new pickup, custom on-board electronics, super jumbo frets, new pickguard), and (B) the Dan is in Connecticut undergoing reconstructive surgery by my http://www.drzyg.com/ Dr. Zyg (he’s at http://www.dyzyg.com).
In other words, I really can’t tell how much of a copy this Univox guitar really was. Any info is much appreciated!

CALL ST LOUIS MUSIC SUPPLY… I FOUND IT BY SEARCHING YAHOO… I GOT A REPLACEMENT PICKGUARD AND SOME OTHER STUFF
I’ve got a little music store in a rural area. I’m trying to find a bridge/saddle & tailpiece that will fit a univox lucite 6 string for a customer-sorry, no date or model number. The dimensions of the saddle are approximately: 2 1/2"x 3/8", the tailpiece 1 1/2"x3 1/2" with 4 screw holes 1/4" from edge. Where can I find them?? Help!
Anybody know what kind of cases will fit a Dan Armstrong lucite resonably well?
ie: les paul, SG etc….Mine needs a case and i doubt i will come acoss a "real" DA one…
: Anybody know what kind of cases will fit a Dan Armstrong lucite resonably well?
if you dont want to pay an arm & a leg for a custom job
then what i ended up doing was getting a generic rectangle case one of those "fits all deals" and cutting some high density foam to keep the headstock in place and sort of wedge a piece at the end to keep the guitar from sliding
to and fro
anyway good luck
Yes finding a case for an Armstrong is hell…your best bets is to find a guitar case that is not specifically designed for strats and pauls, as of course the DA does not fit in them.
I bought a generic rectangular case for my 70, bit my re-issue came with one that fit it nicely…it is not form fitted custom job like an SKB case is for a Strat, bit it does the job. In fact I called SKB years ago to see if they had a template for a DA and they said something to the effect of "What’s that?" But that was years ago and since the re-issues, they may have one. Worth a try.
Take your guitar with you to the store, and try cases out. That’d be quickest, however.

I have a 1970’s Dan Armstrong that I would be willing to trade for a black Gibson Les Paul Custom w/ a mahogony neck (no maple).
My D/A is extremely clean and comes w/ 2 pickups. The humbucker and a single coil.
It also comes w/ 2 saddles. The traditional wood and fretwire, and one that is just wood like a Danelectro.
The only things not original is the switch and the case.
Thanks
I am in need of a Dan Armstrong guitar.. I would prefer a reissue cuz I have heard some stuff about them not going out of tune as bad, but an OG is fine by me as well. It’s a plus if they have been modified in a few ways too, like if the bridge was changed or the pickups changed (obviously it depends on to what)
I’d prefer a clear one, but a smoke colored one is cool too..
thanks, email me if you have one

Sorry – forget it! There are so few Dan Armstrong of this type, that you will hardy find any replacement parts! Bill Lawrence made the PU, and as far as I know has he died some years ago. Try to contact Kent Armstrong. I found the following article:
When Mo Clifton approached Kent Armstrong to build a custom pickup for the original version of this bass, he asked him to mould one with holes in so that it could be placed on rails – the idea being to find the optimum position for the pickup between bridge and neck. As there were several different usable tones that resulted from being able to move the pickup easily, Mo decided to offer Kent’s sliding pickup as standard.
So, with just one pickup you can quickly change from a deep, percussive double bass thump to a singing fretless tone with the minimum of hassle – be careful not to force the pickup to either end of its travel on the rails, though. Some of the early Dan Armstrong bass guitars (Dan was Kent’s dad, if you weren’t already aware of this) had sliding pickups, as did the Gibson Grabber, so it’s not a far-fetched or new-fangled idea.
Mo Clifton’s craftsmanship is always excellent and this bass is a ‘Mini’ work
of art.

I recently aquired one of the re-issues on Ebay. It plays much better than my 1970…and the bridge is a vast improvement. It has individual little saddles for the strings. Hey it blows too…but it’s better than a popsicle stick with a piece of fretwire over it. I remember someone on this list here said they had Armstrong parts, so see if there’s any of these re-issue bridges lying about.
Also, as a footnote, this re-issue (which is translucent black) has an MD (Modern Drive) pickup as well as the stabdard RT. Not to bad for an Armstrong pickup. few years a go I had a friend of mine mod a Jackson J90-C to slide into the Armstrong enclosure, and it’s hella loud, indeed.
This popular thread has been given its own page : Re: Dan Armstrong Bridge
I have a reissue plexi. I did replace the stock bridge with a Dan Electro bridbe. I had to fabricate a 3/16 plate below the bridge to keep the angle of the saddles at a minium. I also had to drill and tap 6 new holes behind the old ones. These are used to hold the saddle in place. The way it was, it could not be intonated. It was a bitch but it playes really nice now. Fast and effing low. I also swapped out the Grovers with the new thumb wheel locking tuners.
Any questions email me at [email protected]

: Thanks Kyle. Will the re-issue bridge mount up on the original? Do you know of any other bridges that will mount up? (I heard that there was a danelectro that fits) Rumor has it that the Gregg guy posted before has parts. I have Kent Armstrong’s e mail address too. He is still making pick ups for the guitars, he hasn’t responded yet to see if he has any other parts. (I only sent it today) Thanks again brother I’ll keep you posted. LATE!!!

hi
I bought the re issue bridge and it has to be shaved down… it is much too high… I have not tried to do it yet… but I did make my own for a temp. I uses about an 1/8 inch high peice of wood and solid core wire to lay on top… the DA that i bought had a Bigsby added and a Gibson S1 brigde with saddles that could be used for intonation adjustments… but the plexi glass was routed so it could fit… worked ok… but heavy modification… I did find the original chrome plate – 2 and the re issue bridge -2 so if you need one let me know…

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT TUNERS WERE USED OF THE OLD 6 STRING LUCITES… TYPE AND MODEL ????
Do you still have the bridge & popsickle stick thing ? I have an old 70s copy of a DA by Ventura. But I am missing parts. Electronics, pick up, pickguard & bridge. I do not care of its original or repro. I just want to put it back together. Thanks for the help.

: : I sent an email to [email protected], but that was a roll of the dice. I have heard zippo. What address did you use?
: : As to whether or not the bridge fromt he re-issue would fit on the original, I don’t know. I imagine it would since they say it was made from the original specs
: : (I am suspect of that statement, however, since the neck on thre re-issue is actually playable and the one on my 1970 is a like a baseball bat).
: : I suppose it’s worth a try, maybe I’ll give that a go when I change the strings on the black one this wekeend. Gonna slip that Jackson PU in there too and see what happens…..

:hi there i recently got the newer bridge with the brass saddles for my original 70′ guitar and had it replaced
it dosent just go right in, it will need some careful shaving from the bottom to get the action down the newer bridge is much higher than the original but makes a world of difference for the intonation i got the bridge from
st. louis music
p.s any one know where i can find a humbucker for my DA
thanks

Hi,
If anyone has — or knows where to get — an ORIGINAL, humbucker slide-in pickup for the Dan Armstrong plexi, please let me know. From what I understand, the humbucker was added to the original 6 (country treble/bass, rock treble/bass, jazz treble/bass) just before the guitars ended their run in ’71.
I’m looking for an original knob for my dan armstrong
They are the same knobs that were on the old Ampeg v-4 amps
I have what I think is either a 68 or 69 Armstrong, Serial A339D. Anyone know the exact year of manufacture? Also, I need a the pickguard replaced as it was destroyed at a gig aeons ago. Anyone know where I might find one? Cheers.

I’ve just got a "replica" Ampeg , lucite guitar. Email for pix, etc. Mike
I Have a Conrad lucite copy if your interested.
I just bought a ’60 Dan Armstrong plexi (LOVE it!) and I’m looking for info on the following;
1) my "original" bridge doesn’t have the fret-like wire that was atop the wooden bridge, so I’d like to get a complete original bridge or one of the ones from/on the recent reissues with the immovable saddles — if those bridges fit on the original guitars.
2) my hardshell case is falling apart. i was told by ampeg that a strat case would work, went to buy one, tried fitting the DA in there and it doesn’t fit. anyone have a DA hardshell case or know what case fits the guitar?
3) I only have the rock treble pickup — would like the modern drive or humbucker if anyone has.
4) How do you determine the exact age etc. of the guitar from the serial no.? where IS the serial no?
5) any other info would be helpful.
thanks!
Christian
If you’re looking for the Serial Number, peer down through the curve of the top cutaway, as if you were wearing the guitar in a strap. You should see it through the Lucite.
please, if anyone can help me find parts,i have a reissue dan a. clear/6 string, thank’s!!!!
I have recently picked up an old clear body Dan Armstrong from a local pawnshop.
The switch has been replaced, what do I need to return this back to spec?
Can I tell how old this is by the serial number?
thank you for your time.
Thanks
:There is a way to tell the production number and somewhat"date" the guitar from the serial number. Did you find the original equipment you needed. I’m looking for a replacement saddle. : Hi all-
: I just inherited an Electra copy of the Dan Armstrong lucite guitar in fair shape, but needs some TLC. Can anyone tell me how close the Electra is to the original, and will parts interchange- ie: Can I buy DA parts for this thing if needed?
: Thanks!-

I have an Electra copy of a Dan Armstrong (lucite) also… I let a friend of mine take it and set it up. He had previously owned two Dan Armstrongs (lucite) and he told me that the Electra played just as good (and was mechanically the same). I hear about tuning problems w/ them, but mine w/ Grover tuning pegs on it stays in better than my Les Paul or my SG.

Could you please let me know the name and specs of the transparent perspex (?) Dan Armstrong guitar used by Keith Richards around the time of the Exile on Main Street album. I dont think KR ever got the same sound after he stopped using that guitar. Are there any available how much are they etc.
Thanx
I have a shaftsbury DA guitar which is what Keith played. It is currently in pieces but I am planning to rebuild it fairly soon. It has been modified to some extent, mainly to strengthen the neck/body joint which was a bit of a weak point, and I do not have the original pickup which was a gibson-type humbucker. I have no plans to sell this guitar but I can give you more specs and photo’s if you like. Also if you were to offer a good price I might consider selling.

I’ve looked all over the net to no avail to find information on my amp – it’s a Dan Armstrong 30w tube, model ‘Dan 1’, serial no 1200, with built-in graphic equaliser.
I believe it’s late 70s-early 80s….
Can anyone give me an age or point me to a source of more info ?

This popular thread has been given its own page : Dan Armstrong sliding pick up
I bought one in 1976 from a guitarist who had recently got it from Clapton. (Jack Bruce had a matching bass). I used it in a pro cabaret act for over 30 years. Always kept in tune and plyed great. I dropped it and the neck cracked near the head. I got it fixed by a professional luthier. Saw one sell on eBay about 2 years ago for around £1000. Would sell this at a good price. Must be very rare these days.
I had one on 1976/7/8 playing in a punk band in Birmingham UK. The neck broke off during the punk festival August 1977.
Great sounding guitar

Clive:
I am the owner of a "Timber" Dan Armstrong with a single sliding pickup which I purchased new in 1975 in Sacramento, California. When I purchased it, there were two options in the colors – dark mahogany, which I have, and a "Pumpkin" color. I purchased it for about $750.00 and it came with a huge hard-shell case. I don’t think there is much resale value – or at least the stores where I am are do not think much of the guitar. I look forward to hearing from you.

If you want pickups wound like the originals try contacting Kent Armstrong @ http://www.kentarmstrong.com, he can reproduce the pickups as released with the guitar. ( Either Modern Drive or Rock Treble). If you remove the pickup it should have MD or RT on the back so you’ll know which one you’ve got. I think he charges about a $100 each. Anyway, good luck

I recently aquired an original D.A. plexi, and I’d like to get ahold of some of the different pick ups for it. I understand the reissue D.A.s have a few options available. Where can I get these, and will the fit in my older model? Also, my pickguard isn’t original, and I’d love to find a real "fake wood" one. I don’t care whether or not if it’s from the reissue. I realise Ampeg is handling the marketing for these new instruments, but thier website offers no info on parts or accesories. Can anybody out there help?

35 years ago from a relative as a gift. I have been all around the net trying to find out if this instument is worth fixing (neck is loose.) Also who made it and how old could it really be?
The reason I am contacting your site is obviously the name and the fact that i found connections with sears and dan electro ( i was told that this was a sears guitar but i found out that they made Silvertones.
thank you john coombs

: In 1967, a German company made four guitars with crumby vibrato tailpieces, and sent them to me as samples, asking me if I wanted to order some more. Ha. Some nerve!
