These are classical guitars – they require nylon classical strings. Steel strings damage a classical guitar. Classical guitars have the tuners facing to the back, behind the guitar, and usually have the open holes where the machine heads turn to tighten the strings. Let’s keep these beautiful instruments working well! Cheers.

I am in possession of a Vintage Classical Acoustic Guitar with the following sticker-label insert markings:

    Imported By Espana Guitars
    20 East 15th Street New York 3 N.Y.
Thought to have been previously owned by someone from Barbados
Can someone please give me more info on this musical instrument?
    Thanks,

I bought one of these at Sam Ash on Long Island in the very early 70s. Brought it to Colorado and it cracked badly and I gave it to some girl learning guiitar. It was a good looking guitar and played well.

  4. I have an Espana number 41275 stamped in the headstock. It was a highschool graduation present from my parents in June 1964. Bought in Halifax Canada and now residing in Bangkok. I do not play it much but it is in excellent condition and still in the original hard case. mikeadair10 at gmail dot com

Interesting…My father got a brand new Val Dez classical guitar for a birthday present back in the mid- late- 70’s. It always had a great sound. I learned to play on it myself long ago and I’ve had it in my possession for quite some time now. It still looks great. Over the years, I’ve brought it in for maintenance a few times — broken tuning peg for one. Anyway, each time it’s gone in, I’ve always gotten praises from the pros at the shops. This baby has unusally great tone. The only Val Dez I’ve ever seen or known is this one that’s in my family. Apparently, it was one of those entry-level guitars with hit or miss workmanship. Made in Finland and imported by Espana Music Company in New York, NY during the 70s. Not many of them out there and even fewer in great condition. Frankly, not worth much money. But, hey, if you happen to have one where the workmanship was "right on" and the body sings when it resonates, then it’s definitely a keeper. Considering my collection of better, upscale guitars…my retro, el-cheapo, Val Dez will forever hold an endearing place in the line-up…it’s a beauty.

l just picked up a val dez at a flea market a v67 classical . l am a retired luthier and play delta blues on anything with a bottle. it has a 5 piece neck ,rosewood finger board ,tight spruce top , mahogany back and sides, its shape is a little bit like a selmer without the cutaway. l have guitars from as early as pre 1815 . this is a very good instrument but just like gibson and all the rest everyone made less expensive and down right bad stuff . this one has a low serial number and best guess from the early 60s. as restoreing it would depend on for a collector or a player.l keep anything if its got mojo.

Just looking through my storage room, and remembered I have had a guitar tucked away for quite a few years. It’s a cute Val Dez V-62 6-string. I’m no expert, but it sounds very sweet, and plays well. Deep lacquer, but badly crazed. Otherwise nice condition.

        Rusty

I found My Val Dez leaning against a trash can with the headstock taped to the neck.I glued it back together and have been playing it for a few months. I’ve never heard of Val Dez til now,and this is a sweet sounding guitar, not bold and pungent like my Epiphone.

Oh this one is a 12 string.

          Bluesdj

Someone left my V-64 (6-string) at the Waste Transfer Site. Two tuners missing; replaced all tuners w/ 3-on-a-side from a Stella. No pickguard. Steelwooled off the gloss finish, oiled ; waxed body. Polished frets, oiled fingerboard. Replaced/cut new nut. Could hardly wait to restring and strum! Turned out to be a very solid guitar with a fairly full, balanced sound. Rivals my F Hashimoto (another obscure late ’70’s guitar). Trussrod adjustable; the original cheap tuning machines from Japan would indicate ’71-’72. Serial #242211. Anybody able to date these from the serial?

I was actually scowering the net for info on this particular guitar. I bought mine, no strings attatched, (quite literally) at a pawn shop in Toronto. Is it worth restoring? Mine is exactly as described by "Cliff" (six-string). The number is 143988. Just looking at it makes me think it’s a little bit towards the ‘miss’ end of the spectrum when it comes to workmanship. It’s probably just old. Thanks for any advice. Just out of curiosity how much would a decent looking Val Dez (like mine) be worth, even if it may not be all that much?

Hi I also was looking on the net cause I was curious if the guitars in question was half way reputable. My Val Dez is crazed all over all I did to mine was glue the pick guard back on and put some lock tight on the adjustable bridge (which I thought was pretty cool for a steel string). The tone of my guitar still delights me. I am a hack by my own standards but have played some pretty nice guitars in my day. The ring that the Val Dez has rivals some other high end instruments It does lack some bottom end but then the sound box isn’t huge or anything. The number I have is 156802. Must have been a good day in the shop. The only thing I would consider doing to mine is to put some new trucks on the head for a bit more sensitive tuning control.Otherwise I don’t see any need to run out and buy something else to replace it. After all it says right in the guitar that it is the Finest Guaranteed Quality.

          mike v.

i have one too, i got it for free if that tells you something about the worth. it took a bit of work setting it up dressing the frets and re intonating the bridge but now it plays and sounds pretty good!

i have no idea what model it is, the sticker in the sound hole has disappeared.

what does it need to restore? i’d say its worth a shot…

        MFA

Hi there. Recently I received my grandfather’s Val Dez guitar. It is listed as V-62 with a serial number of 200068. It is in excellent condition, he passed away in 1976 at the age of 89. He was from south of Rome, played violin, mandolin, and guitar. I’m not in it for the money, my family and I are returning to Rome for my new job and I am wanting to take it along. Is it worth an overseas trip?

stumbled across an old val dez guitar made in Finland. some of the workmanship is good, some shoddy. imported by espana guitar co. does anyone know anything about this guitar, or maker?

I bought a Val Dez in 1960. Paid $40 for it–guy at the music store said it was the BEST guitar made as far as sound was concerned. I’ve played it ever since and still use it to this day–sounds even more mellow now than it did when I first bought it.

this seems ironic. I found an old valdez finland quitar at a yard sale and grabbed it up for $ 20.00. It was very dirty and the varnish is cracked but the sound it amazing. I installed a pic up and am continuing to enjoy it’s tone. I also wanted to know more about it;s origins. I will keep looking.

I would like to know the value of an older model Ovation that I have had for twenty years. It wasn’t new when I purchased it. It’s Model number 1619-4 and I was told it was the top of the line before the Adamas series came out. Inside the body close to the neck joining, there is another number – 126556. It has two pick-ups and plays beautifully. Anyone have any idea? Thanks.

for sale to highest bidder. White faced, black neck w/leather hard case. Model 1111 6, ser.#023648. Acoustic. It has never been played other than a couple of strums. No nicks, scratch’s, cracks or any sign of wear. Case has a verticle crack at about the base of neck. It’s from age of naugahide(not leather) drying up. Inside case is root beer colored velvet. Or whatever it’s called. Crushed veloure? The tone is absolutely incredible. I don’t play. But I know a sound. My partner of 15 yrs died in March, was hers. Starting bid is $500.00 USD. If it doesn’t get much higher, I’ll advertise in a different market. Pic’s to seriouse buyer’s. A brand new one wouldn’t be any better than this one.

      Hi,

I have an Espana 6 String electric guitar, that was also made in England. The guitar was purchased
(used) in 1973. It came with a Gibson Skylark GA-5 amplifier. Both still work fine.

Any info on the guitar would be appreciated.

      Thanks,

I have a what I believe to be a 60’s thinline espana bass guitar. It is a espana and a thinline bass not too sure of the yr., but people who have seen it have said that it is probably a 60’s. It’s a es335 type model.

          Thanks dom

I have a Val Dez 6 string acoustic–April 1971 made in Finland; imported by Espana Guitars New York; V-64, #164925. It was my grandfathers–my grandmother gave it to me in 1999. Although I have a few other guitars; this one still plays beautifully and looks great.
Is there anyone out there who knows the approximate value of said guitar?

I have a Val Dez nylon string guitar, model V 63, made in 1972. I bought it last fall at a thrift store for $7.00. The headstock was coming apart and the bridge was starting to lift. After some regluing, I put on new tuning machines and strung it up. I was amazed at how nicely it plays and sounds. This is the second one of these I’ve had. The first one was bought at a yard sale several years ago for a dollar or two. It was in poor condition, with several major cracks and a big hole in the side. I ended up deeming it beyond repair and cutting the body off of it with the idea of reusing the neck. I still have the neck, though I haven’t done anything with it yet. This one was very similar to the one I have now, if not identical. The finish on both of them was heavily cracked and alligatored—wonder if that has anything to do with the great sound. The whole body (top, back and sides) of the one I cut up was made of plywood, which makes the nice tone even more surprising.
I would have to say the Val Dez is
worth keeping an eye out for, as it seems they can be picked up for next to nothing, since no one knows what they are, and they sound far better than one would expect.

I have an early 60’s Val Dez. Has nice checking and sounds incredible. The serial is 014206. I believe the year would be designated as the last number first and the first number last, maybe a 1960. My mother got this for a high school graduation present in 1964. Its pretty close to mint. I would expect a near mint model from 1960-1966 to fetch a pretty penny 1500-4500. the late 60’s up to the early 70’s would be 1000-1500, but on ebay 650-950 on a good day in this bad economy.

From Mr. Jay: During the early ’70’s, B&J importers in Mtn. View, distributed Espana and Val Dez guitars. They were built in Finland. The Espana line was the top line and Val Dez was more of a student line. The irony was that some of the Val Dez guitars were actually better than some of the Espanas. The Val Dez guitars typically sold from 100 – 250, while the Espanas were higher. I played, repaired and sold a lot of these at that time. I’m pretty sure they’re not made any longer. They had some neck problems, and the tops, while resonant, were pretty thin and had a tendency to warp.

I have a Val Dez V-73 12-string with a trapeze tailpiece that my father had in our house for years. From what I’ve read these were made by Landola in Finland and the serial number system matches theirs. My father thinks it is early to mid-70’s. s/N is: 3-013341. I recently brought it to a guitar shop here in Newfoundland and got some work done on it. It plays nicely now has a great sound lots of nice checking in the lacquer. I’ve got it tuned down a whole step and a capo at the second fret to reduce the tension. If anyone has any info on these guitars let me know.

        Hi

I have a v64 that I have had for a lot of years, it’s not the prettiest guitar but has a wonderful mellow sound. I have seen three others three in my travels and the finish was Checkered on all of them.
I also have my fathers Gibson J-45 that I love the sound of,but I’m afraid of something happening to it, not because of value just because it was my fathers. So the little Val dez gets all the back yard / party action.
I like the small body on this V64, it needs a little tune up but a super little guitar, I plan to grab up any I come across just haven’t seen any for sale yet? Lol
Oh my serial number is 241005 – from the serial numbers you would think they should be for sale on every corner?? it so

      6. Espana acoustic hollow body
        Anonymous

I recently came across an Espana Acoustic hollow body 6 string…. I found in the attic of an old Victorian house I am painting in Gainesville, Florida
The sticker inside reads that is was imported by Espana Guitars. WRITTEN AS FOLLOWS…

        Imported By
        ESPANA GUITARS
        5 Union Square
        New York 3, N.Y

It looks to be pretty old, especially because the Zip Code only being the number 3
        The serial number is (2104)
The case it was in is brown and has an alligator skin pattern.
Does anyone have any information on this make? There is no “Name”
The spot where the strings are attached, on the body is pretty ornate and the pegs are in an arch. There is a really cool inlay at the bottom of the piece, (where the strap would attach), the keys are smoky clear, the back has a, what I can only describe as a racing strip, (also inlay), around the hole is a rather fancy set of 12 in-layed extremely ornate rings of red, green and mahogany… At the “head” of the neck, (where the keys are), is the name Espana, with the accent above the N. and below the name is a crown. The pick guard is very snappy as well, not just an arch like regular guitars. I have tried to find out more info about this particular style. I would appreciate any input or leads as to what it’s worth is, both monetarily and intrinsic.
Thank you for your interest and input… Celino Dimitroff

Just finished stringing my Espana Classical Guitar…made in Sweden, distributed by a Company in New York. I bought the guitar, new, from my guitar teacher, back in the late 1950’s, Jack Riddell, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. I recall that I paid $125.00 for it. There is checking on the front body of the guitar, but the back is in beautiful condition. Nice to know that there are others out there that own what i bought so many years ago, and still own.

        Robert Stephen Olien

It is now december 10, 2009. I am now having a Luthier here in Winnipeg replace the original tuners with Grover individual tuners, and am having a cutom Nut and Saddle made of bone installed. I should get the guitar back before Christmas. The original tuners were not up to the task of keeping the guitar in tune any longer so I took it to a Luthier to see if he thought the guitar was worth changing the tuners. He checked the guitar out, and said yes. The neck is straight, the guitar is in great condition. Reason for the change of the Nut and Saddle. He told me that plastic tends to absorb sound while bone projects sound. Can’t wait to have it back and play it with improvements.

      Ken Lempit

These guitars were imported by my family’s long defunct business, Buegeleisen & Jacobson, which distributed in the US and Canada. The brands Kent, Stewart, Espana, Val-Dez, and Durro (wind) were among their best sellers. The quality of these instruments varied directly in proportion to what market they were targeting. Some, like Espana, had models that were very well made, and now would cost more than $1,000 at retail (some well over $2,000). Others were very promotional, and would compare with least expensive guitars from Japan.

just picked up an old espana guitar like the ones mentioned here. made in sweden, distributed through nyc, number 49608. seems to be of good quality and tone, with good wood and very decent action. paid $75 at a used guitar shop. couldve bought an epiphone c 50 nylon classical in excellent condition for $100, but the espana, being made in sweden and 40+ years old, had more charm.

Greetings. I just finished a mild restoration of an Espana classical guitar which my wife purchased from a music store in Huntington, NY, in the spring of 1962. Labels indicate that it was made in Sweden and imported by Espana Guitars, 20 E. 15th Street, NY 3, NY. It has serial # 49333 stamped on the end of the head. As she recalls, her parents paid around $150 for it. It is in fairly good condition with an excellent tone. (Thanks, Paul. Saved me typing.)

Interestingly, we reside in Hartford, CT now.

It is made in Finland and was imported by Espana Guitars, 5 Union Square, New York 3, N.Y. the serial # is 138740. this guitar is brownish red. it sounds sweet, warm but sometimes a little muddy. it looks great and sounds great..i dont know if that helps.

I have an all red with white pickguard steel string Espana made in Finland. It is a neat looking guitar, however, the bridge has started to pull from the body. I bought it used from my brother in 1976. I think he bought it in the late 60s for about $125.00. The action was a little high so I used it primarily for slide.

              Re:Espana Guitar
Jim I was very lucky to find an Espana guitar made in Finland with very little repairs to be made. Mine has no label at all in it but I did find out that they were widely sold through out Canada from a major Dep’t store Eatons(now out of buisness). They were sold back arround 1965 for $300.00 and were later sold to a distributor in New York. They were selling there for $310.00. That is all the information I could find to date. But the music store that is doing the repairs on mine said it was a very good guitar and that i will realy enjoy it. I know i bought an Oscar Schmidt by Washburn and I paid $300.00 for it. Let me know if you receive this letter and if you have any more info on your Espana.

Espana guitars are made of Brazilian hardwood and were very popular in the late 60’s.
They were derived with a split model consept of Classical and Rock accoustic guitars. They went for anywhere around 300-400 dollars at the time. To make a guitar of equal quality now would be around 900 to 1000 dollars just for materals.
They also cost quite a bit to fix as I am finding now.
