In 1987, I constructed a maple copy of my 1963 Fender Jaguar body & neck; a pickplate, metal switch cover, metal tone knob cover, and part of the bridge assembly from stratch. I never finished the project because I was unable to find a duplicate tremelo tailpiece, and no company made a set of pick ups to duplicate the Jaguar’s pick-ups. Today, I think ALL PARTS, in Texas, sells a copy of the Jag/Jazzmaster tremelo tailpiece; however I know of no company that makes a copy of the Jag’s two pick-ups (You probably can find duplicates of the Jazzmasters humbucking pick-ups).

I would be willing to make you set of full-sized plans, accurately drafted for $200.00, but I would urge you to buy a used Jag or Jazzmaster, and take careful measurements, and draw your own plans. Be AWARE that the Jags/Jazzmasters use a 24" in scale for fretting, not the 25 1/2" scale used for Stratocasters and Telecasters. Also, that the bridge consists of two 1/4" posts that are placed within two holes drilled in 1/2" steel rod that are embeded within the guitar body.

I had a 1 1/2" wide neck (at the NUT) on my original Jaguar. I ordered the custom neck when I bought the guitar new. I don’t know the degree of arch on the original neck, but when I made the copy neck, I used a 2 inch width at the NUT, and NO arch on the fretboard, as I desired a flat finger board.

The rosewood fingerboard on the original neck is only about 1/8" thick, and is shaped concave on the top of the fingerboard (the arch); but is also shaped CONVEX on the bottom side of the rosewood to match the concave contour of the maple neck. I don’t know if all Jag or Jazzmaster necks were constructed this way by FENDER, but it was done to give this narrow neck more strength. On my copy neck I didn’t try to dupilicate this concave/convex shaping of the neck and rosewood fingerboard, as it would take much more work to accomplish, and would serve me no purpose. I urge you to check out this unusual construction feature on other Jazzmasters or Jaguars, as I have never seen it on any other guitars.

The Jazzmasters use a 25 1/2" scale. It is the Jaguar and Mustangs that have the 24" scale.
The body shape of the Jazzmasters and Jaguars is almost identical, while the Mustang does not have an offset bottom; it is flat like a Strat.
By the way, I’m also looking for Jazzmaster plans. I only really need the body outline though.. and a file works, I can print out full size myself.

      SAURAV

HI , I am SAURAV .I am an guitar enthusiast like yourself .Recently I found a broken guitar in my aunt’s garrage, and since then I have been lookin out for some help .I would be really glad if you could answer some these questions .

Q1-How many types of pickup exist? What are there different uses? How do different pickups affect the sound of the guitar?

Q2-How do BASS pickups differ from that of the electric guitar? Do any other instrument also use pickups?

Q3What is the science behind pickups and their particular position in the different bridge area?

Q4-What is the ideal width and length of a fingerboard? What is the ratio between the frets of the fingerboard?

Q5-How would the sound be affected , if we expand the distance between the bridge(bridgebone) and the last fret (24th) ?

Q6- How dose the shape of an electric guitar affect it’s sound?
Q7-If we would place pickups inside a Dobro guitar , how would it affect it’s sound?

Q8-Why is the bridge of an electric a bit slanted?

Q9-What is the mechanism behind a TREMELO and a VIBRATO rod?How dose this mechanism is employed in a guitar?

Q10- What woods are suitable for (a) fingerboard, (b) body, and (c) neck.?

Q11-What is the science behind AMPLIFIERS and PROCCESSORS ?

PLEASE send your help at [email protected] or at [email protected] . THANKS

        1. Re: my mission
          Ben

D’Armond do some neat little fretless basses about 18 inches long using big thick silicon strings – might be worth checking one out for inspiration. I would suggest using thick gauge strings to compensate for the small scale length; maybe use the bottom 4 off a 5 string set (low B, E, A, D) but tuned up to normal pitch. That way you should be able to get a decent amount of tension in the string despite it being much shorter than usual.
Alternatively, you could simply fit a longer neck to the body (depends how much you want to cut up the guitar). Or you could get a longer scale length by moving the bridge towards the end of the body, but then you would need to move all the frets as well which could get messy and time-consuming (you could always go fretless!).

Hi again: The Espana guitars were obviously made in Sweden and Finland. The Finland Espana’s were Hagstrom derived, Bjarton designed, and made by Landola. Top of the line Espana was a satin finish "Hauser" shape rosewood spruce Classical.

I recently acquired an Espana Classical guitar that I was told was from 1959. It does not have a logo on the headstock. With that said it does have colored wood inlay on the headstock, brdige, and back. The top is spruce. The back, sides, bridge, fingerboard are all brazilian rosewood. The neck is a seven piece laminated mahogany 2" wide. The bass is rich and the trebles are brilliant. The gold foil label reads: Made In Finland 189245 Finest Guarenteed Quality Imported by Espana Guitars 5 Union Square New York 3, N.Y. I have been told it sold for over $300.00 which in todays money is 2K. Clifford

    3. Re: Anyone heard of Espana of Finland?
      Randolph Litz

Back in 1964, I purchased an Espana SL-3 from Sam Ash Music in Brooklyn, NY. Inside, the label said "Made in Sweden" and its dimensions and shape were identical to the Goya and Hagstrom classical guitars of the period. The headstocks on most of the S without nthe brand name wewdish made Espanas were plain and unadorned and, unusual for classical guitars, they had adjustable truss rods in the neck. In 1967, I replaced it with a newer model SL-3 which had a pearl Espana logo with a pearl crown inlaid into the peghead and the label on this one said "Made in Finland." The dimensions and shape of this instrument were also slightly different from the Swedish models so much so that the Finnish guitar did not fit properly in the case I used for the Swedish model and I had to purchase a new case. The most popular entertainers using Espana guitars were Liam Clancy of the Irish folk group The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, and Ronnie Browne and Roy Williamson of the Scottish folk group the Corries.

      James

I’ve long had a question on the guitar I gifted to my may dad some 30 plus years ago and which was gifted back to me by my mom after his death some 4 years ago.

It identifies as an Espana Model E-221. I finally just punched in E-221 and came up with a "dating your Landola guitar" website and so went there. Once there, I hit the model number and "boom" there was my guitar — but as a Landola. Then I punched up "Landola" and "Espana" and came up with a bit of a story about Espana and makers of guitars for sale under that name.

      Check it out: http://www.hagstrom.org.uk/hagstromhub.htm

I have an acousitc that was recently given to me after my dad passed away last year. My brother, sister and I had bought it for him for Christmas in probably about 1976 — most of yours seem older. Mine has the same label info as many — "Maqde in Finland — imported by Espana Guitars . .. 5 Union SQ, etc. (including the "New York 3, NY"). I can’t remember what we paid for it. It also has something not mentioned by anyone else — what I take to be a model number — E-221.

      1. Re: Anyone heard of Espana of Finland?
        Steve

You can occasionally find Espana guitars on Ebay, as I did with my 12-string about 6 months ago. Since then, I’ve kept an eye on their value as measured by the market (i.e. what someone actually pays, not some appraiser just supposing).

I paid $500 for mine but it came in a vintage 50’s-era Lifton case which by itself, without the guitar, is worth $200-$300. It also features Brazilian rosewood back and sides (and also fretboard, but harder to tell due to wear). Brazilian rosewood is now endangered and prices for guitars built with it are rising. Typical new $2000 Taylor today has special editions using Brazilian with a $500 or so up-charge.

I’ve seen others on Ebay go from low $100’s on up to $400-500, but most have been between $150 and $250 depending upon condition. I’m only talking about the acoustic guitars here. Besides the guitars themselves, some folks sell framed ads cut out of magazines from that era … a nice way to decorate the wall wherever you play.

After 1972, they seem to have stopped producing them.

Yes, I have one too! White plastic finger guards, m-of-pearl fret spots, great metal screw keys, beautiful sound. I got in in 1965, used, from my brother-in-law who didn’t tell me where he got it [he isn’t able to communicate now]. The labels inside are in English, so I assume it was made to sell in the USA.

Its great to see someone out there talking about these guitars. I have a 12 string Espana from the late 60’s early 70’s I think. It is made in Finland and imported to New York by Espana Guitars, Pelham Manor, New York 10803.
          Model # E231
          Serial No# 3-015234

Can you help me find any more info on it ?

I purchased an Espana back in high school in 1965, a model SL-1. I did pay just over $300US for it. It was described as a "handcrafted 3/4 size classical". There is a "made in Sweden" sticker inside the body below the Espana Guitar logo sticker. It has served me well and continues to deliver a beautiful, rich sound. My paperwork came from BUEGELISEN & JACOBSON, Inc. They were identified as "distributors of Espana Guitars". The paperwork shows the 5 Union Square, NYC address AND (in Canada) 720 Bathurst St., Toronto 4, Ont. I too would love to find out more about this company, that made this fine instrument.

I found an Espana guitar in my wifes attic when we were dating. She was going to throw it out, because the bridge was missing and there were a couple of blemishes on it. I took a good look at it and noticed the quality and craftsmanship of the construction of the guitar. I recently carried it to a local music store and had a professional opinion about fixing it. The gentleman closely examined it and said it is a finely made guitar with excellent bracing and wonderful wood inlays with a spruce top and mahogany sides and back. He suggested that I have an expert do the repairs and that although he is not a fan of orchestra guitars, he really liked this one. I do not know the model but it has the decal inside that says Finland and the New York address as well. If anyone else has anymore information on these type of guitars I would be grateful to your response.

This is a little late coming, but I was doing some research on my guitar I have had as a young girl. The description you gave is exactly what mine seems to be. It’s been sitting in my closet for years and wanted to know if it was worth anything. I wondered if you found out about its worth. The inside of my guitar has numbers (3-010131). The guitar needs a lot of work. The action is very high and the finish has cracks. Probably due to heat and cold changes. Other than that it has a good sound. Thanks

I found an Espana guitar in the garbage about 15 years ago with a broken neck. I noticed it had a "made in Sweden" label inside complete with a serial number, so as a kid I thought it might be a significant guitar!
After wood gluing the neck back together (just looked again before typing this and can not find the joint) It has been played faithfully since!

I Have an espana guitar. The label on the inside says New York. The back side of the guitar appears to be rose wood. Very rich in cheery color wiyh very dark to black veins with some interesting flares in the grain. The top is spruce and the finish has cracked through the years. The head stock does not have the same logo as the ones I have seen on the internet. Mabe because it is an acoustic not a classical. It reads espana but with a large crown below it all in a gold color.

I own an Espana that was purchased from Eatons Department Store in about 1970. It is a 6 string acoustic, very quiet and not a great deal of projection. From my understanding they were made by the Hagstom (not sure of the spelling) Guitar Company. I recently saw a double necked Espana that was selling for $6oo Canadian. My six string is probably worth $30.00. I recently had it set up and made playable(the neck had a slight S curve) by a guitar tech who thought I should use 9’s on it as the stress from a heavier gauge string might cause a more serious problem. Its not a great guitar but I have an emotional attachment to it.

          1. Re: Anyone heard of Espana of Finland?
            Christopher Sears

I still own an Espana 6-steel string guitar. Model number 2102, Serial number 177785. The label inside says "Made in Finland for Espana Guitars, 5 Union Square, New York 3, N.Y."

It was the first guitar I bought from a store, the fourth I was to own. I was in high school, so I had to save for a while. The date was the spring of 1971. It was a huge deal for me to finally get a new guitar that no one else had scratched or mucked up in some way. I bought it at the Broadway Music Store on Yonge Street at Broadway Avenue (north of Eglinton), Toronto.

I have looked at the Hagstom uk site (referenced elsewhere in these postings) and it seems like my guitar is very similar to a mid-60’s model "FL-40", the catalogue dimensions match very closely. The major visible difference is the bridge. All the Espanas in catalogue photos seem to have a rectangular bridge. Mine is straight on the soundhole side but multi-curved on the "bottom" like a moustache. In addition, the saddle is made of wood and its heigth is adjustable by 2 brass screws at either end. I have never seen this on an acoustic steel string guitar before, or since.

I always found it to play and sound well, unfortunately the years and strings’ tension has not been kind to the bridge, which has split along the line of the pin holes as well as being partially pulled off the top. The top is also pulled up into a pronounced belly. As a consequence the adjustable wood saddle is now as low as it can go to maintain decent action on the treble strings but in doing so the base E rides above the saddle and rattles seriously. The neck is fatter feeling than my other steel string guitars (dreadnaughts), more like a classical guitar. It has a truss rod of some kind and remains straight and true.

I have had to retire it to GSO status (guitar shaped object) until I can find the time to repair the top and bridge (I think it will need a complete top removal and replacement).

While I have comments about Espana guitars, I am interested in knowing if anyone has or has heard of Espana guitars that were made in Sweden rather than Finland? I got my Espana for Christmas in 1967 and it was purchased at a small music store in Texas. I have quite a collection of classical guitars but usually reach for my Espana. It is a terrific instrumet especially considering the price. I have seen many Espana’s on places like ebay, but they are always those made in Finland and imported by a company in New York. Anyone know anything about those made in Sweden? Thanks.

I have a Espana, sounds great, still in good condition and it is has a sticker on the inside with the same address. Write me back if you want. Talk to you soon.

          : Espana guitars
I have an Espana steel string guitar that was purchased around 1968 for my sister who never took it up so I got it and let my kids pick up on playing. I finely got the youngest one to stay with it. It was an inexpensive guitar at the time. It sounds pretty good. I play my Martin DR from 1992 but sometimes pick up the Espana when it’s out in my son’s room. I only use light silk and steel strings on it. Is it worth anything today? I thought about putting new tuners on it since the ones on it now are cheap. There is no model number but I do have two numbers inside it. They are 2102 and 128606. The zip code inside is correct as you described.

I own an Espana classical guitar. The sticker inside it says it is made in Sweden. The serial number is 53557. I purchased it in 1964 in a music store in Aberdeen SD. I was in college then. The importer listed on the sticker is:

          Espana Guitars
          20 East 15th Street
          New York 3 N.Y.

I don’t think the three is a zip code. It seems I remember from my youth that larger cities had "zones" which were part of mailing addresses.
As I recall, the guitar cost around $150 at the time I bought it. It was the first thing I ever bought that I got a loan from a bank for.
I am not an accomplished guitarist, but the guitar has been my companion at a lot of youth group singing and campfires. Until I came here to your website, I haven’t found anyone else who even recognized the Espana brand. I thought there must be something special about it. It’s too beautifully-made of a guitar to be just "brand X".
          God bless

: Espana guitars were widely available in Canada about 35 years ago. They were carried by Canada’s largest (and now defuct) department store Eaton’s. They were advertised as being made from Canadian woods that were exported to Finland. A brand new Espana SL-1 or SL-2 Classical guitar cost about $300.00 CDN in 1967. In 1967 this would have been about $310.00 USD.

: The product line was promoted, in Canada, by a Czech expat opera singer and actor named Jan Rubes. Mr. Rubes went on to appear in many films and television shows including the Harrison Ford Movie "Witness" were he played the Amish Patriarch.

: When I was in grade 3, Mr. Rubes visited my public school to perform a concert using his Espana SL-2 Classical guitar. I was so impressed with the performance, and Mr Rubes, that I asked for a Espana guitar for my 10th birthday. This began my guitar playing career. I still play that guitar, almost everyday, 35 years later.

: The Espana line was imported into the U.S. by a company called Espana Guitars in New York City. The address given on the label inside the guitar is:

          : Espana Guitars
          : 5 Union Square
          : New York 3, NY

: "3" seems like a very short Zip code.

: I have not been able to determine what became of the Espana company nor when they stopped producing guitars. If you have any information I would appreciate hearing from you.

Finnish made Espana guitars were distributed in the USA by B &n J distributing company. They marketed a full line of 6 and 12 string guitars, steel string and classical. Their steel string guitars had a good tone but had a quiet sound. Their classical guitars were actually quite good with a fine top-of-the line rosewood classic. I last saw them about 1975.

Follow up on Espana guitars: I had a lot of contact with Espana guitars in the early 70’s in the Mountain View, CA area. They were distributed by B&J Distributing in Mt. View. They carried a full line of 6 string, 12 string, classical, and some specialty guitars such as quint guitars in a violing shape. They were built in Finland. Espana guitars were a mid priced guitar competing with Yamaha and other similar guitars. They typically had solid spruce tops with laminated sides and backs. Quality was rather uneven with neck set and bowed tops being rather common. The good ones did have quite a good while rather light sound. Mr. Jay, Texas

In 1968, I bougut my Espana (acoustic 6 string)from Long&McQuade in Toronto for $110. It had a neck problem, and within 6 months I asked for repair. They suggested I go to the importer (not sure of the spelling but I remember the phonetics) Bugelheisen and Jacobson on King Street in Toronto. They exchanged the guitar for me and is the one I have today. Model 2104 SN:126511. I’ve been offered $1000 for it many years ago, but I wouldn’t sell it. Love it. Yes, it has the same gold label "Imported by Espana Guitars 5 Union Square New York 3, N.Y."

:I have several Espana guitars and have researched them, the brand name was used by Hagstrom during the mid fifties through the sixties. Some Espanas were made in Finland, most likely by the Landola company which is the largest guitar builder in Scandanavia currently. These were very nice high quality guitars solid spruce tops and birch or mahogany or maple backs. I had a double neck 12/6 string which had some structural issues. The espana’s from Sweden I believe were made by Bjarton, and are of even better quality as far as I can tell. The Goya Levin guitars are similar in quality to the Bjartons. I have a Bjarton made Hagstrom 12 string which is the best sounding 12 string I ever heard.

Sadly, no real info to relate, but this is to say that I just bought a steel-string flattop Espana at an estate sale here in Connecticut. It looks like it was made fairly well and made out of reasonable quality woods. It’s had kind of a hard life, but I’m in the process of cleaning it up and am hopeful that it sounds halfway decent. There is a gold label inside that says it was made in Finland and imported by that same New York company. Glad to hear anything more about the company and its steel-string models.

            Richard Jones

I recently purchased an Espana model E-221 guitar. It has a dreadnought body with a solid spruce top. I suspect the back and sides are hardwood laminates, perhaps walnut or some such. The bridge is highly stylised and unlike the straight bridges on other Espanas I have seen. I would have thought it a replacement but there is no indication this is the case. The label inside is square in shape, white with Finest Guaranteed Quality, printed above a 3 brown color oval with Made in Finland, Espana Serial No. 4-015727. Below the oval it says in very small letters Imported by Espana Guitars Pelham Manor New York 10803. This is obviously different than the gold labels many others refer to, which also have a different address. The lacquer finish is extensively cracked all over the guitar, so I suspect it has endured the full gamut of climate extremes we experience here in Canada. The tuners are made by Schaller. W. Germany. Tone is very pleasant but not as full as my Godin Seagull and Norman acoustics. Saw another post about the E-221 model which suggested it may have been originally purchased around 1976.

IN 1969 MY FIRST STORE BOUGHT GUITAR WAS AN ESPANA CLASSICAL… IT IS STILL ONE OF THE NICEST SOUNDING & PLAYING GUITAR AROUND. I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANOTHER ONE IN ALL THESE YEARS! (smile) A TRULY NICE GUITAR COMPLETE WIT CROWN INLAYS…

I still play that guitar, almost everyday, 35 years later.

I recently came acrossed a Valdez guitar that was made by Epana Guitars out of New York City (same address listed). I agree that it is tough to find anything on this company. But I must say that my guitar is made of delicate quality and is said to be imported from Finland. I look forward to refurbing this vintage classic. Good luck in your searches.

These were imported by Buegeleisen & Jacobson, a now defunct distributor of musical instruments in the US (its operation in Canada may still survive, bought out about 30 years ago by its general manager). The short zip is how NYC zips were shorthanded up through the 60’s. These guitars were custom-made for B&J, whose execs basically taught the Fins how to build them for export.

Espana guitars were the Landola export line. They made all kinds of guitars. I’ve had an acoustic steel stringed Espana, I now own a red 335 electric model, with a set mahogany neck and a Bigsby whammy. They bought parts from Hofner etc. The intonation of many Landolas from the 60’s is terrible. The bridge is placed just about anywhere.

Before ZIP codes (1963 or so), large cities had Zones. In "Return to Sender", Elvis sings, "…no such number; no such zone". That’s what he was talking about

I was recently given an Espana guitar (Jan 2005). I know little of its history other than the owner has lived in Berkeley California for the last 50 years. It makes sense that she would have gotten the guitar in the 1960’s as she is in her 80’s now. The address given on the label inside the guitar is also:

            : : Espana Guitars
            : : 5 Union Square
            : : New York 3, NY

The guitar label indicates that it is a SL-1, and the serial number is 104440. I would be very interested to learn the year the guitar was made or any other information. I would appreciate hearing from you.

                Hello,
I also have a Espana guitar made in Finland, model SL-46, serial number 95624. The address on the label inside is identical to the address on your guitar. I bought the guitar several years ago in a used guitar store in Seattle. It has several cracks and the top is partially warped, but it has very sweet sound and I love playing it. I too would like to learn a bit about the brand history and possibly the year when it was made. Can anybody advise us?

I found an Espana bass guitar recently and was very impressed with the workmanship. It is an acoustic bass guitar with a D’Armond style pickup in the sound hole. It is shaped like a cello, and the back and sides are made out of stunningly beautiful Brazilian rosewood. The top is spruce. It appears to be from the sixties, so it would be a quite radical design for that time period (i.e., before the Ernie Ball Earthwood series of acoustic bass guitars, and before Guild’s B-30). The label is consistent with the label you mention, and it was definately made in Finland. The only thing wrong with it is some finnish checking (no pun intended). What do you think a bass like that would be worth today?

I have Espana electric I bought about 15 years ago (bought it used from my guitar teacher). I don’t know much about it except that it’s sounds, looks and plays beautifully. This particular electric is a red hollowbody (looks a little like an old Gretsch), 2 pickups, "bigsby type" tremelo. Looks to be solid mahogany. I have no idea of it’s value but I would certainly be interested in any estimates.

I just repaired one oned by an acquaintance. I used to do a lot of them in the 80’s when i was a full time instrument repairman& builder. This one came in via Espana Guitars, 5 Union St NYNY, the stick-on brand name on the headstock is Val Dez. I cant tell if it’s solid wood or not as I dont want to open an edge under the binding.

I also have an Espana. I bought it at a music store in Neenah WI in 1969. I was a senior in high school and I turned in electric guitar ( Fender Jaguar) and amp for the Espana and a folk guitar. I recall the price of the Espana to be about $325.00 (I ordered it from a catalog at the store). My label reads: Made in Finland Espana Finest Guarenteed Quality Imported by ESPANA GUITARS 5 Union Square New York, 3 N.Y. There are also numbers stamped on the label. I also would like to know more information about what happend to this brand.

: : Espana guitars were widely available in Canada about 35 years ago.

: : The product line was promoted, in Canada, by a Czech expat opera singer and actor named Jan Rubes. Mr. Rubes went on to appear in many films and television shows including the Harrison Ford Movie "Witness" were he played the Amish Patriarch.

: : When I was in grade 3, Mr.

: : The Espana line was imported into the U.S. by a company called Espana Guitars in New York City. The address given on the label inside the guitar is:

              Hi there:
My neighbour has just loaned me an Espana guitar she bought in 1965. It has the serial number 78268. The importer name is Espana guitars, 5 Union Square, New York 3, NY; same as the other person who mailed in. It has a 3 piece neck, of mahogany, with what looks like a maple centre peice about 1/4 inch wide. Headstock has "ears" to make up the width. Finger board is rosewood, and the headstock face has a pretty piece of veneer on it, maybe rosewoood again, but a nice grain. Body os mahogany, (don’t know origin) with again, a lovely grain pattern. The top is definitely fine grained spruce. The owner left it out in the Canadian cold, and thus the finish has cracks and the also the bridge had to be repaired when it pulled away from the top (same cold incident). The fingerboard is either flat is very slightly dished down, so maybe some shrinkage ocourred. Other than that, it is in good shape, and even with old strings has a lovely mellow tone.

Any ideas of the value of this. She paid $350 canadian in 1965. I am interested in buying it and would like to give a fair price.

              Thanks

Hi Liz. I have a classical Espana Guitar that I bought used in 1969. I have not played it in 40+ years and it has sat in its hard shell case ever since. It is just a memento of my childhood at this point and I may be willing to sell it to someone who really wants it and will play it. It is clearly one of Espana’s better guitars as it has the Rosewood back and sides. There is some light age crazing in the varnish but otherwise the guitar is in excellent condition needing only a new set of strings. The tone of this guitar is excellent. If you are interested, email and we can talk about price. I am in Southern California. Thanks, Alan S. Freeman

I have an Espana Classical guitar I bought in Atlanta about 1971. I think I paid around $200 or a bit more for it. What stood out to me at the time was that it had a truss rod. Light colored top looked like spruce. I’ve seldom played it but the finish has many lines from changes in temperature. The finish is crackled but not the wood. The frets are uneven to some extent.

I’m doing some research on Espana guitars from the early-mid 1960’s for the Joni Mitchell website. I’m pretty certain that Joni’s first guitar was an Espana (purchased in Calgary at Eaton’s (perhaps?) around the 1963-1964 time period), but sure would like some of your expert opinions. There is no way to share photos here, is there? Anyone interested, I’d be happy to email you the photo for your opinion. Thanks! [email protected]

Interested in selling it if you know anyone who might be interested or could tell me a value I would appreciate it. I bought mine when I went to college at William & Mary in 1962.

I am looking for an Espana with solid redwoos back and sides with a mother of oearl crown inlay.
I had one many years ago and loved it. It was stolen and I would love to replace it.

I just put a new set of strings on and it plays well. If you are interested, please contact me.

I have an Espana bass that looks very much like a Gibson EB-2 but I can’t find any info on it. I remember seeing them in a local ship in Canada in the 1960’s but this is the first one I’ve owned. It looks a lot like one of the Hagstrom basses and I do know some Espana guitars were made in Sweden. Can anyone tell me any more about this bass? Thanks in advance.

Did you ever get more info on your espana guitar? I have one with a half cone sound box just above the regular guitar sound box and the numbers inside say S1 102. I have yet to find any info. It is as if anyone that might know something about these guitars has disappeared lol. Anyhow, if you get any info please keep me up to date.

          3. Espana Guitar - Model SL-1 made in Finland
            Stephen Schuller

I have an Espana SL-1 bearing serial number 98881 and the “Made in Finland” label, so I place it as having been made in the mid- to late-1960’s. I received it new as a gift about that time, maybe 1969. It plays very well, but the neck has started coming off the body at the heel (ever so slightly), and one of the tuning knobs has just broken off while I was replacing the strings. The guitar has the “Espana” name and the three-crown logo on the head, and the same logo is also on the body of the guitar, in the center of the upper-left quadrant of the front of the body. I’m thinking of having someone install a screw inside the body into the heel of the neck, to hold it on. Any comments?

Stephen — I also have an Espana, model SL-4, serial 96783 It has a rosewood body, three crowns mother of pearl inlay. I acquired it through a trade at a small music store in 1969 or 1970. The guitar I traded for it was a Guild 12 string (brutal on my finger tips). I don’t think the market value of the Espana has kept up with the Guild 12 string 🙂 but I found this one much easier to play and enjoy — so I guess it was still a good trade for me.

Excellent action and deep rich sound. No physical problems because I took good care of it over the years. It was the very first to arrive at B&J as a sample. It hung right behind my desk. After trying it once I knew it was special. If anyone has questions, write me. Regards to all Español fans. Jan

                Hello,

                My name is Chris.

I have a rather strange but wonderful “España” Acoustic bass…not like an ‘upright bass’…but more like an acoustic guitar style bass. Very unusual almost cello shaped body. with an “ESPANA” STICKER in the soundhole that says:

                “MADE IN FINLAND” sticker…also says…

                IMPORTED BY ESPANA GUITARS
                5 UNION SQUARE
                New York 3, N.Y.

It has the ‘España’ “Crown” inlay on the upper bout

It has a pickup mounted in a chrome bezel up =by the neck…looks to be a ‘SCHALLER’ single coil pickup (same as on German KLIRA Model 162 Violin Basses).

I am very interested in finding a) Any information about the details of this España Acoustic Bass Model

Hi Jan — I have the Espana classical myself — bought off a friend in the early 1960’s. He worked for Ward’s Music in Vancouver, then moved to Western Music. On the headstock is 41-665 — could this be the S/N? I don’t recall what I paid him for it, as it was the balance that he owed on it at the time, so not sure what he even paid for it. My daughter has it in Calgary now. It has a beautiful deep mellow tone after all these years. The top surface is checked, but the back and sides are still in excellent shape. It has the original tuners. Anything else you can tell me about it, per the s/n, when it was made, etc. would be appreciated. Andy ([email protected])

Thank you for confirming what i knew instantly as well. This SL-1 Espana guitar was very special form the first time I laid eyes and ears on it. On the particular classic acoustic i have acquired there is a sticker. It looks like a king’s crown. I wondered if this is normal or makes the guitar more special in some way. It was a friend of mine’s grandpa and he doesn’t play guitar so he gave it to me. It has a huge crack in the main body, but i stil love the guitar. I am cleaning it and prepping for new strings. I think the crack is going to give it a little extra character 🙂 Anyways, if you could give me any information on what I actually have here I would love to hear it. My serial number is 100063

                1. 102689 sl 1. Just bought one here in canada, has the crown decal on the head and above sound hole. Guitar looks like new! Previous owner says its 1981? the sound is not as good as one I have from spain which is detuned a full step. Any suggestions on tuning or strings?

Hi Thanks for that post. After reading some of the comments I’ve found online, including yours, i decided to buy a espana sl 16 grand concert guitar. it seems like this particular model went on for sale in 1968. according to the catalog i found online, it was the second most expensive classical guitar model at $279 in 1967. I think the most expensive model was sl4? anyways, would you please tell me more about Espana sl 16? For that matter i would love to hear from anybody.

                thank you very much

Please tell me where I can find the catalog mentioned in you post. I have recently acquired a lovely little acoustic guitar made be Espana of Finland according to the label but unfortunately no model number or serial number is evident. A catalog would certainly identify it as the design is distinctive with a viola like shape.

Any help welcome to identify this instrument most welcome.G

          6. WANTED - ESPANA CLASSICAL GUITAR
            Gary Hill

Hello everyone from Austin, Texas. My first guitar was an Espana classical guitar with nylon strings that I purchased in 1969. It had cutouts in the sides, making it similar in shape to a violin. Blonde top, rosewood back. Mine was destroyed by a careless mover and I’m looking for a replacement. Please contact me if you see one any place. Gary Hill 512.569.7215

                Gary Hill

Geoff, thanks for your post. Could you send me a few pictures of your guitar and a description of it’s condition? Also, does it have a model number inside on the label? It is probably an SL-104 or SL-106. I may be interested in purchasing it from you. Gary Hill, Austin, TX [email protected] 512-569-7215

          7. Espana 12 string
            David

I have a 12 string model which I purchased in 1973- I played it until 1995 when it started to warp- probably due to my using heavy gauge strings I took it out yesterday and strung it with light gauge Martins after cleaning it up a bit- it plays pretty good after all these years!

: : I have an Espana Classical guitar, made in Finland. Anyone know of this company, their products or value?

: I have an Espana tenor guitar. Know nothing about the company but have seen other Espanas, all from the sixties. The tenor that I have is excellent. Well constructed, high grade, solid spruce and mahogany, great sound.

I have a classical Espana I bought in 1969. The label shows Espana Guitar, 5 Union Square, New York 3, NY. I’m curious if the company still exists. Just took it in for the first time for repair. Tuning peg broke. A great guitar.

        Gus

I, too, got an Espana Classical guitar from a friend, rather beaten up, but had my guitar guy bring it back to life…he did some binding work, etc…great bottom end on it. It’s label also reads “imported by Espana Guitars; 5 Union Square; New York 3, NY. My thoughts are that this company was created in New York for the sole purpose of importing foreign instruments, for sale in the U.S. and Canada. My particular guitar claims to be “made in Finland”…question is: By whom in Finland? The guitar maker from Finland may not have any connection with Espana Guitars, except for making guitars to export to New York…I’m guessing mine is from the 60s or 70s…

170 and a little number, 2006, under the Made in Finland
label..this guitar has mother of pearl pegs and gold
edging under the pegs with lots of decorative inlay..
It was purchased around 19 65 ..sure would love more info..thanks

          Donald O'Brien

I like the rest of you too have an Espana.

My late Father purchased it most likely from Eaton’s or Sears in the the 50’s or 60’s.

At the time we were living in Cape Breton Island Nova Scotia Canada so most of whay other people has made complete sense.

No idea as to it’s value but due to it’s blood attachment that is not so important.

The guitar sat for 20 years in an attic. 4 years ago I stringed and now play it every day. No repair just classic sound.

I will take any further history anyone can come up with.

          Thanks,

Yesterday I purchased an Ovation nylon stringed electric at
a pawn shop for $318.00! I was searching for info on this model
(no.1624) guitar. The serial number is 224986.
Also, a few questions- Someone said that steel strings may be
installed on it. Is this possible? The neck truss rod and 14th
fret at the body would seem to make one think so.
And ,is there a web site that features a search engine for guitar
serial numbers. The Ovation/Kaman site was impossible to get around.
No help there at all! Any help is VERY appreciated! Thanks!

i would say if the guitar has a straight through type tail piece , then yes use steel strings. i would recommend light gauge strings just to keep the bass end under control. i use martin lights top e gauge 0.11.

I have a model 1624 ovation, have had it since 1985 it had steel strings on it when i got it and it still has them. I have had no problem with it and it has a great sound. I recently took it to a friend who is a Luthier and had him do a set up on it,It plays as easy as an electric now. It also sounds great plugged into an acoustic amp.I say go for it with the steel strings I use Elixr light guage.

I have one too. Four years ago I saw its twin auctioned off by Sothby’s auction house of N.Y., N.Y. for $60,000.
Talk to them. By the way, mine is 1984.
Also on that tv show where experts travel around giving value estimates on items brought to them, someone showed up with one of these guitars and as I watched with some interest (since it was my guitar, so to speak) the expert told the owner it was worth $40,000. I freaked. This was in 2002. So far I’m just playing mine.

I have model 1127 w/ signature in pretty darn good shape. Plays and sounds like a dream and only has a couple of small scratches. I too have had mine since I was a teenager and assume it was manufactured in the 70’s. I have taken good care of it over the years keeping in it’s hard case when I wasn’t playing. I want to buy another guitar just for a change and I don’t think I need 2. That’s why I will consider selling… Let me know if you are still interested.

I have had my Ovation given to me by my sister about 33 years ago and was bought new in prior years. I am trying to find out what year it was made and is an M 276, 1127-4 model. There is no big oval Ovation label on the inside but has the signature of Glen Campbell just above the top of the neck. It was stolen many years ago but I got it back from police and the face was cracked and now has 3 splits on the face, I am disappointed about the face as the rest of the guitar is mint but it has played well for me over the years. Wife bought me a Martin for Christmas this year, love it.

I am in need of a circuit diagram to aid my quest in re-vitalising my dead 1976 100 watt Blueline Bassman amp head. Can anyone tell me if the valves burning extremely bright orange is due to the valves failure, or an extreme voltage gain from some perhaps a transformer short? However I play left handed. I am wondering if anyone knows if this particular model can be restrung for LH playing.

    Thanks.

      1. Re: ovation custom balladeer 1612
        Mario

The first digit is always ‘1’. The second digit is type of guitar: 6 = acoustic electric roundbacks. The third digit denotes bowl depth on acoustic and acoustic electrics: 1 = standard bowl, 5 13/16" deep. The fourth digit denotes mode, for the first eight acoustic models: 2 = Deluxe Balladeer.
Furthermore is the range of serial number between 315001-339187, then is your guitar made in 1984.
You can read it under http://www.ovationguitars.com when you click on ‘cracking the Ovation code’.

I’m keen to have a go at making my own acoustic guitar.
I’m 15, studying classical guitar and are thinking of doing this for my major work in wood technics at school next year.
I would appreciate any advise as to best materials and plans.
    Cheers, Rusty.

My husband has been looking for a new volume-knob for his Ovation guitar. It’s about 20 years
old and they now have sliders in stead of knobs. Any suggestions where to find it?
    Thank you!

I’ve got an Ovation breadwinner circa 1976 and I’m looking for the original tuners for this animal.
The tuners are Schaller types and the gear enclosures are moulded plastic. i’m also looking for
an electronic schematic for the same model.

      Regards,
      Richard
