Maton Guitars

Until the late 1930’s the Australian guitar manufacturing industry was virtually non existent and good quality guitars were hard to find. The best guitars, it was well understood, came from the U.S.A. Bill May, a Melbourne born jazz musician, woodwork teacher, and luthier, decided to change all that… Maton are Australia’s leading manufacturer of Acoustic and Acoustic / Electric Guitars. We pride ourselves on making the best guitars possible at a price musicians can afford! Please take some time to view our range of superbly handcrafted Guitars, Accessories and Custom Options.

    1. 60's Leaderman
      Gazzjazz

I also own a 64 Leaderman, had since new, my 2nd electric guitar, I still play it almost on a daily basis, as for worth, probably only about $200 – 300, hard to sell guitars now with the saturated net market. I cut the whammy off mine, hopeless to keep in tune with it, great blues axe, small profile neck is excellent & the pickups are out of phase in the mid position, sounds cool with reverb !!

    1. Re: maton f10
      Stephen

A Maton F10 has rescently come into my hands for some repare work.Looking at it i would say it was a 62? one of the first, and the fact that it only has three bracing struts is causing it to belly in. The bracing may be different it the later models adding strength, lifespan, and value. However, the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. To get a true value, go to a reputable luthier and ask for a valuation specifically for insurence perpouses. Keep in mind that you WILL have to pay a fee for this, but you will get a certificate of valuation, and a true value on your guitar. You can be guarenteed, however, that if you walk into a shop and ask for a valuation and don’t want to pay a thing for it, it will be under valued and they may try to buy it from you at a lower price again. Take my advice. Pay for a valuation. It’s worth it in the long run.

      hey mate,

I hve 2 maton f10s, I recently had tehm valued. The 1st one is a 69 model in good condition and it is worth somewhere between $400 and $700 australian dollars the other one is a 62 model and is worth between $1300 and $1700. mind you this is one valuers opinion and he did want to buy them so I am maybe thinking he may have undervalued them. But all the same hold on to them if you are a keen player and still play them, they improve like a fine wine.

I bought my F10 in 1969. It cost $120AUD then which was quite a lot – 3 weeks pay for me! It is quite right that the F10 gets better with age. It is still the best guitar I have in my stable and the one that gives me the most pleasure to play.

I was a luthier at Mason in the mid 70’s The F10 was a student / beginners model with ply laminated spruce top and ply back and sides. While they sound ok they are not a stellar sounding guitar and normally sell for around $400. $700 tops. People quoting anything higher around or above $700 are bonkers. If you can sell one above that price it would be on the ignorance of the purchaser so good luck to you. I have two I have just cleaned up for sale. Do I have any takers @ $700 each? 😉

      7. Maton purchased in 1970's in New Jersey 046
        Lancaster

I would like some information about my husband’s Maton Bass purchased in 1973 or 74. The bass has a hardwood solid body with black pick guard and metal bridge guard. It has the Maton logo and an embossed “046 made in Australia” on the headstock.

I play a Carvin Bunny Brunel signature 5-string bass. My husband rarely plays bass or guitar anymore.

We had thought of donating his Maton as a back up bass for our church because it still sounds wonderful. But we have so many fond memories attached to the instrument of the both of us playing in our high school garage bands and early worship experiences at church in the 1980’s. I’ve decide to buy another new bass to donate.

The Maton is the bass our #2 son learned on. He now plays a 5 string Schecter. We will likely leave Glenn’s Maton to him and my 1977 Yairi. Alvarez acoustic to our oldest son.

Anyone know what Maton Bass we own?

      8. F10 MATON 1969
        Dave

        Hi there,

I recently bought an F10 Maton (1969). It is in very good condition, probably one of the best that I have seen of the ones recently up for grabs. I was just wondering if someone could tell me what the most up to date value would be for my guitar?

        Thanks

        Dave

      9. hi all, i also have a f10 folk guitar, serial number 4189 (1171) do the number in brackets refer to month and year?

also when i rang the Maton museum they really dont value these F10s quoteing a paltry $120.

am i missing something, this guitar plays and sounds beautifull, its in fair condition and has original case.

can anyone give me a realistic price range?

        cheers

  3. Maton K10 Capitol
    Dave

I have a maton k10 Capitol semi acoustic. I have been informed that there were onl;y about 450 Capitols made but they were all straight acoustic. Mine has a maton single coil P/up, Bigsby style tremelo and vol and tone controls. It appears to be factory fitted but Maton don’t know anything about it. Anyone out there know anything about it..

    1. re: Maton K10 Capitol
      Zygote

      hi there,
I’ve also had a K10 since 1988 fitting that description: single neck position pickup, tone/volume, tailpiece, tortoiseshell pickguard, etc.
A few years back I had a conversation with an ex-Maton employee who had a good knoweldge of its history and determined that
it probably wasn’t worth much more than $800. For worn out frets and unusually deep tones (with low amplification) it’s strictly
a sentimental instrument that I’m going to give to my son when he’s a bit older.

IMHO There are “better” Matons to collect out there, and when you’ve already got a custom EBG808 why bother – you’ve already got the best!

I recently purchased a Pacific Commander in Hobart – labeled 1946, a large-bodied Arch-Top acoustic with a Bakelite bridge! I was amazed by the warmth of the tone. It’s battered as hell but sounds amazing. Needs a fret-dress badly, but sounds perfect for the 30s style guitar I play. They were an Australian company, some were made in NZ too I believe. I know nothing else bout them – probably aussie wood. cheers!

GARRY,I have a Pacific Tzagani that needs a bit of work.
I visited the Cargills in Seaford Victoria to look into getting it repaired,I spoke to James Cargill[Cargill Custom Guitars]son of Merv Cargill who,as i believe, built the Pacific Tzagani around 1956. James carries on the work of Merv from the garrage of of his home in Seaford.Exelent operation. It’s great to hear of someone else having a Tzagani.
I did enough to get my Tzagani playable and even with the damage some hippy did to it,it still sounded Great.Tone Tone and more Tone. I will be taking it to James to get it repaired properly but at the time of the first visit i wasn’t prepared to part with it for the time required.

      1. Pacific Guitar - Parlour style
        Judy

Hi, not sure if any of you who had been part of this thread are still linked to it but I bought an early Pacific guitar at a deceased estate auction to add to my guitar collection and although I have learned a bit about the company I cannot trace any history on the model I have so hoping someone can help. It is a parlour size in the tobacco burst with a white pickguard and no stenciling on it at all, Fret board is just the dots and the label inside the guitar just says “This Pacific Guitar is built by Australia’s best instrument maker PACIFIC from the finest selected timber and is fully guaranteed”.

I can’t seem to upload photos with this but will try.

If anyone can give me more detail I would really appreciate it, particularly what you think it might be worth. It is in pretty good nick apart from a couple of the tuning keys missing (but still able to be tuned). Any hints on where I might find a couple of similar tuning key heads to put on it? Thanks

      3. Pacific Broadway archtop guitar
        Darryl Althaus

Hi, I have recently purchased an old archtop which has no branding other than ‘Broadway’ on the guitar face. The pick guard has a tall ship engraved in the corner, which I have seen on a couple of Maton Alvers. The ‘F’ holes are without the center quirk, ‘I’ holes may better describe them, and the head stock is quite broad which steers me away from the Alvers. It was suggested to me that it may be a ‘Pacific Broadway’.
The guitar came with a case, which i have seen on google images, with an Alver inside. I don’t know how to attache a photo to this message so I cant expect an opinion on what my guitar is, however, can anyone confirm the existence of a ‘Pacific Broadway’. If so, all info would be greatly appreciated.

        Thanks, Darryl.

      4. I have a Pacific. I bought it in the old ‘Tin Shed’ junk shop in Lithgow many years ago for $25. It has the (owners?) name pressed into the back of it with a ball point pen, ‘Ted Allen, Wang’ ( Wallerawang) I refertted it (twice!) and made a new bridge and replaced the string thingy to the tail block with a german one. I just restrung it with GHS true medium rollerwound nickel electrics and it has a Bartolini hanging off a replica tortioshell scratchplate with no electrics and straight into my MusicMan for a searing crunch and honky feedback or clear bellike tones with their own reverb due to the size of the body. My first plywood acoustic / electric! AJ97OGQ

      5. Tzigani Guitar
        Col Chamings

Hi Garry, I owned a Tzigani Large body from 1959 – 1982-3. It was pretty wrecked when I was given it from my father who owned it since new and according to him that particular guitar was made in Tasmania. It was rosewood FB with solid spruce top. I can’t remember the material from the body but it was I believe a mahogany colour (when I had it re-sanded and professionally lacquered). It was a beautiful instrument that was so loud when played it would drown out even the best guitars of the same style. Unfortunately as a budding muso I had very little idea of it’s real worth and swapped it for a 1965 Fender strat. (needed that sound) I have no idea as to where it might be now as that was back in the good ‘ol days when music was music. If I could find the one I used to own I would buy it back in a flash!!!

      6. I've got a little guitar I
        Jasper

I’ve got a little guitar I found in a shed whilst helping move a piano the other day, it says Hawaii club ‘Made in Usa’ on the head, but apparantly (According to some info I found somewhere on the internet) Hawaii clubs are pacifics? anyway, it’s small black and with a beautiful tiger sunburst, right now it isn’t working since the bridge ripped open after I had strings on it for a night (Don’t worry, I’ll get it fixed) But yeah, any info anyone?

      8. Pacific Guitars
        Simon Binks

Merry used to tell me about Pacific guitars. He did make them and when I took a 1930’s Gretsch archtop acoustic to him for repair, he likened it to the old Pacifics and told me to keep an eye open for them on (then) the Trading Post.

I see one for sale at Real Guitars at the moment 8 November, 2014.

Whatever Merv says, you can count on it as being 100%. I used to sit in “The Garage” for extended periods when I would take a guitar in and just listen to him talk.

I haven’t seen Merv for a few years. I hope he is well. I tried to get Australian Story to dedicate a program to Merv, as much Australian music was written on guitars he made a joy to play.

      9. Pacific Viceroy
        Konrad Lenz

I recently repaired my little Pacific Viceroy. It has a nice, woody tone that sounds a little battered to go with its appearance. It’s missing the original tailpiece unfortunately (my younger self stupidly lost it…) and I’ve replaced the machine heads as well. Here’s what it sounds and looks like – http://youtu.be/Xko7XwkJ824 I’ve always wanted a Pacific Commander guitar. They look great. The trouble with Pacific guitars is that they were cheaply manufactured and the wood is not great quality. I installed a piezo electric pickup inside mine and when I made a hole in side for the socket I couldn’t find my drill but I could find a drill bit. I tried holding the drill bit and drilling by hand and to my surprise it was like drilling through a biscuit. The wood just crumbled that easily. Apparently there were a lot of them in the 40s but not much have survived due to how fragile they are (I’ve read similar things about Stella guitars from America, they had a good sound though.)

      10. Pacific Motuiti Guitar
        Lakshman Gnanaprakasam

I had an old guitar which my mother bought me secondhand in 1967. It had the name “Pacific Motuiti” The sweet melodious tone it produced cannot be compared to any other guitar that I have played. I had left this guitar in my home in Jaffna, the northern part of Sri Lanka when I came to Colombo the Capital of Sri Lanka to work. This guitar was a victim of the recent war that prevailed in the North of Sri Lanka and somewhere in the mid nintees I lost this guitar. Now I have two guitars at home, a Chinese made “Fighter” classical guitar and a friend’s Korean made “Cort” semi acoustic guitar. Both guitars produce fantastic sound BUT not the kind my “Pacific Motuiti” produced. I still miss my old guitar. I will love to hear from other players of “Pacific Motuiti” guitars.

      11. pacific motuiti
        DWold

I have a little Pacific Motuiti. It’s small with a dark finish and a white pickguard and little stenciled “butterfly” fret markers. I believe the whole guitar is mahogany and it has the sweetest most mellow tone of any guitar I’ve owned.

              bur4077

              hi there!

that commander in the sunburst is gorgeous!

i don’t think i’ve seen a better headstock in any other guitar, great art deco style.

what price would you ask for it?

I’d be happy to pay between $500-600

  5. Firebird 12/6 string
    David Beardsell

I have a a 1965 Firebird 12 string guitar for sale $1400 ono. I have used it both as a 12 string or 6 string guitar. I have had it for nearly 30 years and it is in very good and completely original condition. It has a wonderful close action and beautifully designed neck as per Maton’s guitars of that era. It has a Bigsby tremelo.

          Peter

I have number 107 which they tell me is the seventh one made. Maton can’t tell me if it was 1968 or 69 when made. It must have been a custom order or proto type as it has 3 pickup not the standard 2. I have had this guitar since about 1974 or 75. I have just had some minor repairs done it. I had not played this guitar for 20 years as it was in storage but still plays just as great as ever.

          1. Hi
It is interesting to read your post…as I also have a 3 pickup Wedgtail which I purchased back in 1969.
It has great action also plays as good as the day I bought it. It is Red/Black sunburst

Interesting to read your post about the Wedgtail with 3 pickups. You say you purchased it in 1969 what No. is it, this may help me to find out what year mine was made 1968 or 1969.

  6. Maton Starline Amps
    Sean

    Hi,

Does anyone know much about Maton Starline 50 watt amps, what they are like, when they were made, tone etc. Been trying to find some reviews on them but have not had much luck, any suggestions?

    Sean

    1. Re: Maton Starline Amps
      Jim

I owned one of these about 20 years ago. They were designed for jazz guitarists and have a pleasant, warm sound. If it’s grunt and distortion you’re after, then it’s not the amp for you (unless you get a master volume control installed). I now use a Maton V606 which is pure valve (no solid state circuitry) and it has a lot more balls than the Starline.
      Jim.

i have a mid 60’s solid body 12 string that has sat idle for many years now that i am now prepared to sell.

not in original condition, retro fitted dimarzios,
neck repair in Sydney 1969, sunburst body – like the one currently on the grouse site. original parts aavailable with the exception of the scratchplate which was the subject/victim of ‘improvement – change’. Iwas going to get a new custom s/plate and fit 3 seymours – the hb’s which split to a p90 or strat type blade but i know that it would still not be used as i did a 12 string conversion on a strat and that fits the bill. enquiries welcome
[email protected] . all questions answered truthfully.

it sits in the UK and i am flying to the UK in april and can bring back to Perth. in its original case – unfortunately with my name on it.

it does have a serial number on it -reasonably it is 190 ish

          Tim,

I agree with your comments on the bigsby temelo on a 12 string. One tug and every string is out of tune. I Put in a brass piece instead of the spring and it is very stable and plays very well. I like the wide fretboard. It sounds like the Burns 12 string used on several Beatles tracks from the late 60’s. It is a good guitar but I don’t use it much and need the money to buy a more usable guitar for my son who loves heavy metal.

    Thanks.

      Anonymous

Looks like I’m trying to join the Maton EG240 Supreme serial number 1400’s club. Mine is #1476.
This little beauty has 2 chrome pickups, one very odd looking 3-way pickup switch with a lever sticking out, on the single cutaway, and 2 normal volume and 2 normal tone knobs. Each pickup has 6 screws, one under each string. Each pickup also has 2 slots. One slot under the bottom 3 strings, the next slot (in line with the first) is under the top 3 strings. Kind of like 2 rows total. The very nice chrome tailpiece has the normal “M” for Maton, with a smaller circle that runs underneath, also metal. Do your guitars fit the same description?
From what I can tell, the EG240 models were made between 1953 and 1962. 1040 in total, serial numbers 304-1691. Looks like that puts ours either late 50’s, or early 60’s.
Value? good question. But they were and still are very high quality guitars, I’d hazard a guess of between $2000 and $4000, depending on condition.
I’d love to hear some feedback, as I’m trying to find out if mine was a custom order, as I havn’t been able to find any with the same type of pickups.
      Thanx in advance

Alternatively, does anyone want to give me an offer.
      I am in Melbourne Australia.

Hello this my first ever post. Please forgive any clumsiness. The Maton Bicentenial in my opinion is a real collectors item. The one I had until recently (Igave it to a dear friend of mine), was insured for $5000.

I picked one up second hand a few years ago from the estate of the original owner…it’s pretty well mint condition…but I had a Martin Thinline pickup installed (I use an external preamp with it) and I replaced the original case with a Hiscox Flight Case…mine is Number 4

      Martin

I own a Maton Tasman 6 string acoustic. They were modelled on the CW80 and have the model number CW40. There were 500 made in Japan around 1982.

Mine has a great sound, has stood the test of time, with only the plastic nut being replaced by bone after it cracked. According to Maton, they are worth around $AUD500 in good condition.

I have just looked at one of these guitars in a red cross shop, it has f holes, no truss rod in the neck and the pick guard is broken and a part is missing the guitar in poor condition with a lot of wear on back edges with lots of bents scratches, they are asking $200.00 for it. I have look at all the sites I can know picture of it but I think its a b117 or b83 1 price I saw was $750.00 in good nick Iam going to see if they will let me get some pics of it, as I do not have the money to buy and I do not think it is worth that in the condition its in please contact if you wish MIKE

: I have 1 of these. they are just like an Alver. mine has b130 on the sticker and 5364 stamped on the end of the neck near the Stradivarius label. I suspect it was made in 1964. I’ve searched for more info but can’t dig up anything that throws light on the Stradivarius tag. If you have heard of anything more I’d be interessted to hear about it.

          John Rowe

          Hi There,

I have a vintage mid 60s Maton Electric and mine is the only one Ive ever seen. It is a hollow body double cutaway and if i look through the F hole I can see the model number on the Maton manufacturers label which says it is a B.S.66 and the serial number is 193. It is in very good playing condition as I’ve recently had some work done on it. It is marked and the finish is crazed. It does not have the trem arm and Ive had the machine heads replaced as the originals had basically disintegrated. Im looking to find our more….what it might be worth etc…

          Thanks

I am restoring my Dad’s Goldline and it needs some pickups.
The type of pickups were used on quite a few Matons around that era.
They are chrome with rounded edges and have black slots on top.
I have the originals but they have been chopped up and modified a bit.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

        Wayne Harrison

        Hi Wayne,
Yes I have this guitar for sale, would like to wait until it is 50 years old but must go, It is showing signs of old age like myself, I was going to have it re painted but Maton advised me not to and I’me glad I did’t now. Have been trying to find out It’s past, apparently It was bought in Melbourne and sold in Sydney, by a well known rock identity. But have’nt been able to find out who. Or may be I was told that story for a quick sale.(don’t Know). I could send you a photo by email If you would like.

        Thank you

        Hey Bob,,

I have a big, lush, ringing tobacco sunburst Bicentennial that remains – outside of some small and very expensive independents – the loveliest acoustic I’ve ever picked up.
The thing is, I always thought that its serial number (063) made it the 63rd in the series. In full, the Serial No on the inside lable reads: 063 (489)
What do you think that means? Have we both got a 63? Please cross-post your reply to [email protected], because I might never find my way back to this site. Thanks Bob,

      : cheers a lot everyone

Brad, I also managed to get hold of an F240, bought it at a second hand shop for Aus $160 which I considered a bargain. If you go to the Maton website, http://www.maton.com.au, they have an excellent history search area. Simply plug in the relevant details and your away. This is a fairly new innovation on their site as I tried to get this information on mine about a year ago to no avail.
Best of luck and enjoy the guitar.
