My grandfathers 1953? Les Paul

My grandfather left me his Les Paul, but I can't seem to figure out what year it was made. I know it's from the '50s, becuase my grandmother remebers that much. She claims that it's from the first year, but it can't be because it has a serial number on it. The other thing is that she says that it was one of three made that year with a factory install Bigsby vibrato, which is something I can kind of believe, the rarity of it anyway, because I have found nothing online about any others from that peroid that say anything likewise. Does anyone know any sort of serial number scheme, or oddball things that would make it obvious what year it is? She had it appaised once, but she only sent the appraiser pictures, and he claimed that it was a '52 or '53. I personally haven't seen it in years because my uncle is holding it for until I settle down somewhere.

Thanks

Re: My grandfathers 1953? Les Paul

If you email me with the serial number and pics I can help identify the guitar for you. Peace.

Mike

Re: My grandfathers 1953? Les Paul

Mike,

I am in the same boat. I have an old Les Paul that has no serial numbers. From what I understand, Gibson starting putting serial numbers on the back of the head of the guitar in 1953. My guitar has no serial number on the back of the head so I believe mine is a 1952, yet it doesn't have the infamous 1952 bridge system. Mine has a single bar bridge which they used in 1953, but mine also has 3 holes on the tail of the guitar where it is possible that one of the old tail pieces used to be.

1970s GIBSON LES PAUL DELUXE GOLDTOP UNDER $1000

I am looking to buy a 1970s Gibson Les Paul Deluxe (with mini-humbuckers) in the beautiful, classic GOLDTOP finish. I am looking for one in good/players condition with no breaks or repairs for under $1000. If anyone has one that is interested in selling PLEASE contact me with the info.

Re: 1970s GIBSON LES PAUL DELUXE GOLDTOP UNDER $1000

To be honest with you to buy any 70's Goldtop for under $1000 with no breaks or repairs, you are gong to be looking at a guitar with heavy greening. I have seen decent goldtops from the 70's go for as low as 1350. Book value is 1350 - 1700 per condition. So you may want to save a bit more cash and get something a little nicer.

59 reissue

Hello, I dont have any clue about Les Pauls. My friend just gave me a burst reissue which is taped in the case as "59 reissue, #19". It has PAFs pick ups with black label "pat. applied for", moderate flame top, great sound and action, and serial number on back of headstock is inked "5 0019" Made in USA. Could anyone tell me if this guitar is indeed a 59 reissue, and please confirm if its from 1985? It looks old....Any clue about its value also?
Thanks so much,
Nacho www.telecasterplanet.com

Re: 59 reissue

Hey guys this experience has been so great, I mean, 18 days after my post I am just overwhelmed from your response, both in quantity and quality...Thanks so much for your time, effort and help, I know my questions were not very difficult but I am just a neofit on Les Pauls...I will surely come back here often to visit you again and boomark this page right now!
Yours truly,
Nacho.

Gibson (not Epiphone) Slash signature les paul for sale!!!!

I have an original Slash Les Paul for sale. This guitar is in mint condition and extremly rare (limited to 75 in 1997). Flametop, hand painted Slash Snakepit logo, Cobra mother of pearl inlay. These guitars are impossible to find these days, and prices have skyrocketed. Last one i saw was selling in london for 8,000 pounds (about $14,000). I am selling mine for $11,000.00, including shipping (US only). Serious collectors only please.

Gibson Slash Sig

Common guys. THeyre were 73 made 75 including slash's 2 he was given. They were made between 96 and 98. Facts are facts. Haven't heard one was sold to guitar center hollywood. 20,000 sounds like a steal for this guitar. The extreme rarity alone should put it up between 50 and 100K.

2. Hey willing buyer willing seller but anyone seriously wanting this guitar just do a quick search and you can find at least 2 new Slash guitars in a real shop asking for less than $10K and bet you those shops are ready to discount even more.... so be a smart shopper.

Re: Gibson (not Epiphone) Slash signature les paul for sale!!!!

Slight correction, there were only 50 made! Christ dude, you own 3 of them?

Thanks anyways, I got mine about 2 months ago. I was VERY lucky and found it for much less...If you can afford it though (or even if you can't), this guitar is abso-frekin-lutely amazing!

my bad! i talked to a dealer about a year ago that swore that he had number sl 63... i thought there was only 50, but he told me he sold about 5 of em, and it was a run of 75. And he is a highly respected dealer, only sells high end gibsons (I'm talkin real bursts for 70,000, not reissue stuff). So only 50 then. Back to my original thoughts.

Re: YUP, just 50 were made...!!!!

I'm not sure if this includes the PROTOTYPE though...

Yeah, I've read several sources listing the # "75" and also "100". I believe they were suppose to do 100, but I heard the guy who did the snake carving did not want to make anymore and stopped at 50! I think I've heard that the guy has pass on since...

This has been debated somewhat in the past, but www.snakepit.org lists it at 50 and I give them the most credibility in Slash knowledge. I think it's actually pretty amazing that more info. isn't available about this guitar! I really wish Gibson or someone would put out more info. so more people are aware of this amazing piece of art (thus increasing its value).

It saddens me when I hear someone say "Slash's Les Paul" and learn that they're actually referring to the crappy Ephiphony. Worst of all, most people don't even know the Custom Shop exists!!!

yeah i know, i hate how epiphone is known as making slash's les paul signature...I would say these guitars are probably some of the best Les Pauls made (from all aspects, playability, looks, tone).Hey do you know what pickups are in the guitars, are they seymour duncan alnico 2's, or just the regular gibson stock pickups (290's?) ...slash himself had #1 and #2... #1 is now out of his posession and at guitar center hollywood.... i know lots about that guitar.

Re: YUP, just 50 were made...!!!!

i've seen the one with serial number SL75, so i know for a fact more than 50 were made

Yes, I believe these come with the S.D. Alnico II's...

I have not read or seen anything otherwise (I've never taken off the pickup covers to see)...

I know quite a bit about the Prototype also! Are you from LA too? I'm just a little confused about the history though. I thought the prototype was 1 of the 2 that were stolen from Slash. Since Slash still uses the other sig. LP, I assume that he never recovered the Prototype. I saw the Prototype at Guitar Center Hollywood 2 months ago and being curious, I asked if it was for sale. A salesman looked it up and said $40,000!

I came back a week later and was talking to one of the managers of the Vintage dept. His story was that Slash had given the Prototype to his manager, who inturn, sold it to Guitar Center for $20,000.

I don't know, something doesn't seem right, just sounds kinda fishy. I wouldn't be surprised if the guy who stole it from Slash was actually the one who sold it to G.C. Do you know anything about this?

I must say, having seen this guitar in person, it is even more stunning than the rest of the custom shops (if that's even possible?).

76 Custom w/maple board

A friend of mine wants to sell his 76 L.P. Custom. It has a natural top and a maple finger board. Does anyone know what these are worth? I know the maple board makes it rarer but is it rare because nobody wants it? Thanks.

Re: 76 Custom w/maple board

: 76 L.P. Custom...has a...maple finger board...the maple board makes it rarer but is it rare because nobody wants it?

Short answer is yes. I have a '79, and it was about $200 less than a regular Custom with the ebony fingerboard. Some folks like 'em, tho'; I think mine is fantastic. And what's his name from Def Leppard uses one, too.

Hi, anyone knows which model of Seymour Duncan use Slash?

Re: Slash's Seymour Duncan

: Hi, anyone knows which model of Seymour Duncan use Slash? he uses the alnico pro 2 humbuckers.

Re: Slash's Seymour Duncan

he doesnt use the duncan alinico 2 despite what he and adam day say...trust me. His pickups are very expensive. although he has used the duncan alnico 2 on some of his guitars at home.

Re: Slash's Seymour Duncan

Alnico 2's...

Sidenote: After 5 years of searching, I finally got SLASH Signature Custom Shop Les Paul (not the crappy Ephiphone), the REAL DEAL!!!!
