I have one. I bought it used from a friend. Although, it’s practically new. Doesn’t get used much. I’m not a huge player; it’s my only electric guitar. I’ll tell ya more about it, if you reply. Not sure if you’ll get this reply, since your post is 2 years old. Hope to hear from ya.

If anyone knows where I can find one, I would greatly appreciate it. My email is posted or I can be reached at (917) 596-5481. I would be willing to offer a small finders fee if it is located, and in a decent condition. thank you.

My guitarist has a cherry red LP reissue: single cutaway, 1 black P90, wraparound tailpiece and no serial numbers. He bought it s/h around 1992. Any pointers on when LP reissues were reissued and how better to date them?

      1. Re: Les Paul Recording electronics - help needed
        Tom D.

I have a clear schematic that I was able to get from Gibson, if you’d like. The hardest part to replicate is the decade switch and perhaps the tone switch. Type in Les Paul Recording on Google and you will get 3 great sites. However they won’t answer all your questions. I’ve contacted CTS Electronics who is the largest supplier to Gibson and are going to try to help. I’ve gone so far as to contact Les Paul himself and plan to see him in early June. contact me if you’re interested.

      2. Re: Les Paul Recording electronics - help needed
        Mike Loce

I actually called Gibson and asked if they have any remaining literature or even photocopies of the low-impedance guitars(Recording, Personal, Professional). Nothing at all on file. I own a ’71, luckily it works ok. I’ve taken off the plate and I would imagine the circuitry could be duplicated with current smaller electronics. If I find a schematic, I’ll post again. Good luck. Mike Loce.

          Simon Foster

Been looking too. All I can find is this, a fairly small hand-drawn schematic at http://www.guitar-parts.com/images/lespaul.jpg – I’ve tried resizing it but the quality just isn’t good enough to read properly.

Someone somewhere must have a copy of the original manual – anyone got any hints or tips on using the controls? Apparently certain controls only when the Tone switch is in cetain positions.

          1. Re: Les Paul Recording electronics - help needed
            Mike Loce

well, self teaching never goes out of style, I guess. The Bass and Treble only work while the tone is a number 2, and I’m trying to figure out if the decade is isolated, or if it works in all three tone positions. Of course we use our ears, but to see it in print would clear the air. The tonal differences are very subtle, and one might think something is changing, when actually it’s not!

    1. Re: 87 gibson les paul custom - was it a good year for the guitar?
      WAR Jr.

Not really. After Gibson made the final move in 85′ things were cut done pretty bad. I have played some 87′ models that were fairly heavy and still well playable. Only a few though. The others needed attention pretty bad though.

  13. Gibson Les Paul Custom '71 HOW MUCH?
    Kolstad

I have the chance to purchase a Gibson LP Custom 71 model….
The guy I might be buying from… says I can have it for $600
The guitar is not in 100% fine condition, but for a 71model it’s very good…
Is this to much to pay for that old gibson… or do they climb in prices as they grow older?

    1. Re: Gibson Les Paul Custom '71 HOW MUCH?
      WAR Jr.

Buy it. It can only go up in value. It’s already vintage, so the guy either really likes you, doesn’t know what it is, or it’s too far gone for his trouble. Buy it. Work with it, and if it doesn’t work out, then sell it again. Make sure it says Gibson, and good luck.

Does anybody have any info on the Personal series of Les Pauls? I know htey were only made from 69-71, and have low impedence pickups, but how about some opinions from people who have them? There is very little info available. Also, approximate value? Thanks, Donzilla

    1. Re: Les Paul Personal
      Mark Severn

hi. here’s a few things Dixon Yarmouth left out of his description of the Les Paul Lo-Impedance series of guitars:
      1. The pickups were stacked-coil humbuckers, so they weren’t as open-sounding, or uncompressed, or as "free" sounding as true single-coils….but Les designed them to be "60-cycle-free", and did a very good job of it. So, if you cancel the hum, you cancel some tone and feel (too bad Les didn’t get Chris Kinman to design the pickups. THEN we’d get a true single coil sound from this guitar!! http://www.kinman.com). This is still an excellent guitar! The switches let you reverse the polarity of the bottom coil to the top coil, to get a thinner sound, the Decade switch manipulate the tone again, and the 3-position switch does that yet AGAIN. There is a Bass control, Treble, and Volume. Mind-blowing versatility. Plug straight into the board and get ready to jizz in your pants(you metal heads, shredders, and Stevie Ray wannabees go back to your videos and jerking off…this is guitar talk. You’re not expected to understand any of this). If you have a chance to get one of these, scoop it. It’s fantastic.
      Message ends.

Uh…I made a huge mistake! The "PHASE" switch doesn’t reverse the polarity of the bottom coils in the stacked-coil humbuckers….it reverses the polarity of the WHOLE Neck pickup. Sorry for the error.

    2. Re: Les Paul Personal
      Dixon Yarmouth

Dude…..the Les Paul Personal/Professional/Recording Model is a/are very misunderstood guitar(s). The pickups are lower output (in their hi-imp settings) than normal humbuckers, so they don’t overdrive amps as easily as the hi-output humbuckers do. So, that means that all the hi-output-pickup-using morons who NEED to have distortion will ignore this guitar. Oh well…guitar technique is a long-dead concept anyway, so no harm done. In the early ’70’s, one issue of Guitar Player had a floppy record inside, which had a fantastic demo of the amazing sounds this guitar could make. If you can find it, or a copy of the recording, you’ll hear how this amazing guitar can speak. Alas, these guitars were/are not popular, but just wait a few years, and all those guitar-collecting assholes, who speculate, and buy up all the nice pieces will have some… and charge outrageous $$ for them, when only a few years ago you couldn’t even GIVE the goddamned things away!!! lol
      Hope this helps.

What up Duane. Yeah man, I just bought one from MF and I have to say that I am very satisfied. This little beauty has all of the standard “good” hardware that you will find on the more expensive models and it plays like a Les Paul should. Not to mention that it’s also quite nice to look at. The only difference I see in this axe and it’s bigger brothers is A: it is cosmetically striped down, and B: it is a flat top and thus much lighter than your standard Les Paul. Other than that bro, I gotta say that this is a quality LP for a good price. And really, who needs to spend three or four grand on an axe just for a nice paint job and all kinds of fancy trim. That or for a phucking endorsement, give me a break! Gibson can blow me in this respect, phucking robbery if you ask me. No thanks, my five C-note costing, bare ass, smooth playing LP Special suites me just fine thanks. My advice, if you like Les Paul’s and your like me. That is, can’t justify the cost of a couple of thousand dollars for a guitar, buy the LP special. I think you will find as I have that it is well worth the money, and that it is indeed the genuine article. Good luck brutha, hope it works out for you, whatever you decide to buy, out.

The 200 or so guitars in that run sell for between $7000 and $10000 on average… While yours is a collector’s peice it is still a guitar so I would have to know more about it individually… What does it weigh exactly, what is the top like, etc… I have never seen pictures of it so right now I can not say… I tried to email you directly for this but the email was returned… If you could, email me the details and the pictures and I will let you know exactly what it is worth…

Well the value of that guitar can vary widely depending on your documentation. That serial #, while attractive, may not be the first one issued. I have a reissue LP ending with 000. So you have to have documentation at being the first one. But the problem is that you have(possibly) the first issue of a guitar series that is not popular at this time. And with the 50th anniversary issues coming out, the 40th anniversary model will take an immediate back seat. For now it might be worth what you paid, plus 25%..maximum.,,but even that is a stretch. If Murphy retires, then it will be of greater value. Good luck.

        Hello Toru SAN,

do you still have this beauty?

        Please let men know.

        Best regards from Germany,

        :
: Well the value of that guitar can vary widely depending on your documentation. Good luck.

  19. Les Paul Pickups
    Eric

Hi, I have bought a Epi Les Paul Standard 2000 model.
It have alnico Pickups design by Gibson, in the clean mod songs beutiful,
but when I put the distortion mode the pickups don’t rich high gain using a Marshall JCM600.
I want to change these pickups for one with more gain, but I want to retain
the vintage aspect and the tonality.
If anyone know which is the best pickup for that I appreciate the answer.

    Thanks

    Eric

      : Need a les Paul custom UNDER $2000 new…

check out http://www.guitartrader.com, they quoted me $2095 for a gibson les paul custom(no sales tax, and free shipping). i would probably opt for spending more on the shipping, next day and $5000 worth of insurance, to assure better handling. a friend of mine that works with ups recommended that, saying that items insured for $5000 or more are kept separate and taken better care of. i plan on buying a lp standard in february with the tax refund! good luck, and enjoy.

  20. LES PAUL ARTIST, GOOD DEAL FOR 1500?
    Mike Loce

I recently stumbled upon an Artist model that’s not moving at a music shop. Anyone know about these? 3 switches, active electronics, I think it’s an ’82. It’s played, but that leaves the condition in good/very good shape. $1500 seems like a pretty good deal. They had no amp so I couldn’t plug in to see the various tones…any comments? thanks

hey man, no offense but if you don’t snatch that guitar up while you got the chance, you’re an idiot. i’ve been playing one for 21 years and is the best i’ve ever played. play it first and insist on listening to it through an amp just to make sure that everthing works. if i could find another one id good shape i wouldn’t hesitate to pay 1500 bucks for it.
please take a look at the link i posted below. http://www.lespaulforum.com/slubarticle/ artist/artist12.02.html

  22. Pickguard for early 1970s Les Paul Deluxe
    Chris

    Hi there –
If anyone has or knows where I can buy a cream colored pickguard (vintage or repro) for my 1971 goldtop Deluxe, please let me know.
    Thank you!
    Chris

  23. Which Epi?
    Mr Hughes

I’m not sure whether to buy the Epiphone Slash Les Paul, the Stanard or the Goldtop. I need to play November Rain, but i’ve read some reviews of the Slash LP, and apparently the toggle switch is crap and it isn’t good for very heavy metal ,only straightforward rock. I prefer the red colour of the Slash one, but the Snake spoils it. Is the standard available in the same colour?
    HEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!

    1. Re: Which Epi?
      John

Well, if it’s the ’56 gold top (the only goldtop Epi still produces), it has P-90 pick ups, which are better for blues than metal. I would suggest the Standard with the Alnico II humbuckers and a Digitech Metal Master pedal.

all of the epi les pauls are pretty much the same guitar with different cosmetics. epi makes some great guitars and some real peices of crap. its all hit and miss. go to a store and check them all out. buy the one that seems to have the best fit and finish, some important things to watch are the fretwork and the nut. as for a heavy metal sound, 99% of its in your amp. you may be better off with a new amp, not a guitar. if you want slash’s sound check out marshall’s tube amps. slash uses seymour duncan alnico II pickups in his live and studio les pauls and they are fairly low output pickups.

Not true. Different models have different woods, pickups etc and the cheapest ones are bolt ons.

  24. Standard vs. Deluxe???????????? HELP!!!!!
    Confuzzled

I don’t know the order of models (quality wise) in the Les Paul series. I’m trying to decide between a Deluxe and a Standard, but I’m not sure which should be the higher quality. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

    1. Re: Standard vs. Deluxe???????????? HELP!!!!!
      C.H.

SORRY ABOUT THE GHOST MESSAGE…DELUXES AND STANDARDS , IVE OWNED BOTH AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER WERE CONSTRUCTED EXACTLY THE SAME BY YEAR TO YEAR SPECS…WHILE THE DELUX HAS A BRITER TONE,,,ITS NOT THAT MUCH BRITER THAN A STANDARD,CUSTOM OR CLASSIC.YOU CAN MAKE UP THE TONE AT THE AMP.I WOULD ADVISE THAT RESALE VALUE MEANS EVERYTHING, AND I WOULD TAKE THE STANDARD OUT OF THE TWO. ALOT OF CURRENT RECORDING ARTIST CLAIM IN GUITAR MAGS. THAT THERES A BIG DIFFERENCE IN TONE WITH THEIR BELOVED DELUXES,,,THEN YOU ALSO READ THAT THEY SEND IT THROUGH ALL KINDS OF EFFECTS WHICH RENDERS THE POINT MOOT.HOPE I HAVE HELPED IN SOME WAY

  25. Standard vs. Deluxe??? ...which do I choose?
    LPPlayer

I’m not to sure what the order of models is for the Les Paul series. I’m looking at a LP Deluxe and an
LP Standard and Gibson doesn’t really tell you which is a higher quality guitar on the website. So if
anyone can help, it’d be appreciated! Thanks!

I own both a 73 les paul goldtop deluxe and a les paul standard ’82 and I will tell you that the pickups on deluxes suck for rock music.Gibson did some stupid things in the 70’s and one of them was putting epiphones left over mini humbucking pickups in these guitars . this guitar is one of the best les pauls I have ever picked up,playing-wise,best in the world, but the pickups had no power, luckily I found some old PAF’s to install in it; but I had to rout the cavity which some people say ruins the guitar.I dont care . but if you want to play rock, get the standard. I suppose the neutered sound of the mini humbuckers would be fine for jazz or maybe country but large humbuckers can be turned down… and one day you might want to open it up ,so do yourself a favor and get the right one to start with.the standard is also more collectible.

    2. Re: Standard vs. Deluxe??? ...which do I choose?
      bob O

One man’s opinion, the quality of the Standard and Deluxe are both topnotch. The real difference, apart from the tops is in the pickups.. The Deluxe has the mini-humbuckers, and they do sound sweet, but are a bit brighter than the big humbuckers for some people’s taste. I have older models of both the Standard and the Deluxe, and I cannot part with either. They have their own character. So , go play them both, then decide.

  26. Les Paul Studio
    Daniel

A friend offered me his Gibson Les paul studio in very good condition, both looks and sound for $500. It was made sometime in the 80’s, and I need to know whether it’s a good buy. Thanks

    1. Re: Les Paul Studio
      Steve

      Daniel,

500 for a les paul studio in great shape is a fair price. U can check EBAY for actual prices people are selling for. U can figure out exact date of guitar by using serial number. I have heard several studios, and I feel that the 80’s studios are better than recent guitars. IMHO. Good Luck

Daniel, I have ust bought a Les Paul Studio today for $1200.00. If it’s in good condition i believe it’s a good deal but if it’s in bad shape or have been abused watch out!
        Good Luck!

: Could you tell me the price that a 1966 Les Paul standard is worth in near perfect condition Thank You
No such animal…. Les Paul discontinued in 1962, recontinued 1968.

  28. Help me
    Owen Thelwall

okay I was just windering when les pauls were discontinued in the 60’s
’cause there is a guy selling a ’65 LP junior for $500 and I just remembered that
they were discontinued sometime due to legal difficulties. The fellow selling the guitar
also said that the serial number was removed. so I am dubious

  29. tone of various les pauls
    Zoso

I am shopping for an electric guitar, I don’t know a whole lot about Les Pauls, but it seems that everyone who is someone in rock has one. I was wondering if there is a difference in tone between the standard, custom, deluxe, pro deluxe, and even the epiphone. Also, is there a huge difference in the tone between older models and new ones. I heard somewhere that the quality is going down in the new ones. Any additional advice you could give to an inexperienced LP shopper would be extremely appreciated. Please email me at [email protected] Thanks!!!!
