  1. ODD Hondo SG style with no serial #
    Rick

I have an odd SG style electric with hondo on the fender style headstock, 2 copy (Darmond) chrome pups, a spring style bigsby wannabe trem system, has an odd nut(a fret is like 1/8 in from nut) and the neck feels just a little beefier than my 4 yr old Epi SG set neck. The hondo is a 4 bolt bolt on. Can anyone tell me anything about this thing. The guy that had it thinks it is a mid 70’s copy.
    Thanks

  2. 1954 Les Paul Junior?
    Anna Ellerbee

I have pictures of my father playing this guitar approximately 1954-1956. It’s serial number is 51154U. Could that indicate that it was made in 1954? I am simply trying to date it. It is a sentimental treasure that he played up until his death in 1995. Thanks.

  5. 95 LP Std Specs?
    Bill

Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the specs for this model? I want to see if my bridge model is? ABR? Nashville? etc. I have found the newer LP’s to have a f spacing and I would like to change the tail piece to see if I can get a closer spacing to fit vintage humbuckers. Otherwise the e strings hang over the outside of the pole-pieces.

  8. 69 goldtop or is it
    Scott Adams

I have an old goldtop that i have been told is a 69 model . I am ready to sell so i started researching this instrument so that i knew what to ask for it .
I am now not sure that the year i was told is correct . The guitar has the platic cream colored p-90s and the binding near the neck pocket does not widen as do 69 models , Now that i`ve started researching this it seems to me it may be a 56 . I have not found any 69s` on line with plastice pick – ups they`re all chrome . if anyone can help me figure this out i would greatly appreciate it cause i don`t want to loose my @#^ on this guitar it`s to nice . thanks in advance ,
    Scott .

I have a 1968 LP personal edition with a goose neck jack. I called Gibson at their eight hundred number and they gave me a dealers name in my part of the country to go to and have it appraised. It can be done on line with pictures. My opinion they will low ball, then try to buy it.
      Hope this helps.

  10. How much is a '73 custom les paul worth?????
    Melissa

Hi. My dad bought the guitar when he was a kid, and was thinking about selling it, but has no idea what it might be worth. He says it is an anniversary edition and thinks he got in 1973. The only markings on it say "Gibson" and "Les Paul Custom". If anyone could help me out a would really appreciate it.
    Thanks again.

  12. need help with choosing correct guitar
    ryan de silva

Hi I’m a complete beginner to electric guitars and hence don’t know much about them. It seems that all my favourite songs were played using Les Pauls, so I’m thinking of buying one, but I don’t know which one to choose. I want to be able to play ZZ-Top’s “Rough Boy” and Slash’s solos on the G’N’R Illusion albums especially “November Rain” and “Knocking On Heavens Door”. I know that other things matter too … eg. the correct strings, amp etc… (Slash uses Seymore Duncan Alnico II Pro pickups, Ernie Ball Slinky RPS 11-46 strings, Dunlop Tortex 1.14 picks) but which Les Pauls did he use to play the solo on November Rain. My friend told me that the Fender Fat Stratocaster is the best all-round guitar to buy and that I can play other types of music like rock using the Fender; moreover, if I really want to play like Slash, then it’s possible to replace the pick-ups on the Fender to the humbuckers used by Slash … is this advisable? Please help me to choose the ideal guitar for my tastes above … my budget is around $1000 but can spend (a little) more … whatever it takes to sound like Slash!! Also can someone please tell me the different types of Les Pauls … I know of only standard, custom, deluxe, pro deluxe … what are the differences and is it true that the new LPs are not as good as the old ones?
Also, the 2003 LP standard is available with a ‘fat’, rounded ’50s style neck or a ‘fast’, slim taper ’60s style neck … which one is best to sound like Slash ? Please help!!! My email is [email protected].

    1. Re: need help with choosing correct guitar
      Tom Stafford

As to the Fat Fender as a Les Paul substitute, no. I have a hardtail strat with the Duncan JB in the bridge…a standard Les Paul high output pickup. It’s still Fenderish…sharp and twangy at times…you have to realize that the bolt on neck and maple/alder wood combination produces as much tone as do the pickups. Most, to me, of a LP is in the Mahagany and maple cap woods.

  15. 1968 LP Goldtop
    Mason

I have a 1968 Paul that I bought that same year from someone that went on to become the lead guitarist in a band called Pere Ubu. It’s in great shape- all original except that the previous owner dropped it shartlyt after he got it and broke the plastic around where it plugs in- and replaced it with an all metal jack. Otherwise, it still plays fine and shows only a couple of lines of below surface cracking under the varnish in the top. The neck has no discoloration and the bindings are nicely yellowed. How much is it worth?

You got a heck of a guitar there. The Silverburst was rare anyway, and to have it signed by good old LP himself. A dollar quote would place it in the "investment category" I’d guess… I’d check Personal Guitar School- http://www.learnguitar.net, those guys are knowledgeable about those things. Good luck!;)

These are mass-produced and are not really different from other Ephiphone LP’s. I would imagine it should run somewhere between $299-$450 new. If you paid more than that…sorry!

  25. 1952 Les Paul Goldtop: What's it worth?
    Gil

    Hi,
I have a friend who has a 1952 Gibson Les Paul Gold Top for sale. He has owned the guitar since the 1960’s and it has been stashed away under his bed for many years. I have played the guitar and sounds good (for a 1952 vintage).

The only thing non-original are the tuners but fortunately he kept the original tuners! The guitar has no serial number on it.

He is trying to get a feel for what a guitar like this in good condition is worth. Comes with original hard case.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

      jim

      Hi,
My cousin has one as well, complete with the suitcase gibson amp and the cloth covered patch cable incredible. However since it is a 52 and no serial # all I have is the story. My grandfather want to do something special for his daughter, she liked guitar and when the first electric Gibson Les Paul came out he bought the whole thing guitar and Amp. It’s been in the family ever since, but we would like to know it’s worth over the years offers of 3 to 5 K were common. But that’s 20 years ago.

  31. My grandfathers 1953? Les Paul
    Jonthan Roberts

My grandfather left me his Les Paul, but I can’t seem to figure out what year it was made. I know it’s from the ’50s, becuase my grandmother remebers that much. She claims that it’s from the first year, but it can’t be because it has a serial number on it. The other thing is that she says that it was one of three made that year with a factory install Bigsby vibrato, which is something I can kind of believe, the rarity of it anyway, because I have found nothing online about any others from that peroid that say anything likewise. Does anyone know any sort of serial number scheme, or oddball things that would make it obvious what year it is? She had it appaised once, but she only sent the appraiser pictures, and he claimed that it was a ’52 or ’53. I personally haven’t seen it in years because my uncle is holding it for until I settle down somewhere.

    Thanks

        Steve Sanders

        Mike,

I am in the same boat. I have an old Les Paul that has no serial numbers. From what I understand, Gibson starting putting serial numbers on the back of the head of the guitar in 1953. My guitar has no serial number on the back of the head so I believe mine is a 1952, yet it doesn’t have the infamous 1952 bridge system. Mine has a single bar bridge which they used in 1953, but mine also has 3 holes on the tail of the guitar where it is possible that one of the old tail pieces used to be.
