  5. Solo tones
    Quintos

    hey my current setup is:
Line 6 Spider 2 75 watt amp, zoom 505II guitar FX, Ridgewood I300 gothic edition.

i was wondering if anyone could recomend and settings for my zoom505 or amp which would give me some cool solo sounds.
the sounds im looking for is:
gary moore – long lasting notes e.g parisean walkways
michael angelo – makes good effect of fast triplets
    Danzig
    randy roads

id also like some settings which would let me get that high pitched sound zack wylde gets when he bends a note up and down.

Their sound is mainly made from Jesse F. Keeler on the bass and synths. His set-up is as follows: Rickenbacker 4003, Dunlop Tortex 0.73mm triangle-shaped picks, Vintage Peavey and Acoustic heads with two Traynor 8×10 cabinets loaded with PA speakers (output of 1,200 watts), ’80s Ibanez SC10 Super Stereo Chorus pedal and Dunlop GCB-95 Crybaby wah-wah pedal. He describes the sound as, "My sound partly grew from not being able to afford anything new or ‘vintage-cool.’ It had to be ‘vintage-nobody-wanted-it.’”

He then went on to explain his set-up a little more, "Since it’s just two of us on stage I need a full-range sound. Using two 8×10 cabinets and putting out about 1,200 watts helps have a big sound. My rig gives me about as many speakers as a guitarist’s full stack plus a bass player’s 8×10. I also like to use amp distortion because it gives me more dynamic response than a pedal.

Instead of stimulating output with preamp gain or a pedal, I prefer to get maximum output from the instrument. I rewired the Rickenbacker so that nothing impedes the pickup’s signal. I only use solid-state amps because the attack is instant—it’s much quicker than a tube amp. I also put PA speakers in my cabinets because they have better top-end response than bass speakers."

A common misconception of how Jesse F. Keeler get the distinctive sound is that he uses pedals. Jesse does not use pedals or effect pedals at all. He uses controlled feedback from the amps by playing close to it and he wired the amp to a way that it makes the sound it does. If you have ever seen them play live or listened to my Live Bootleg CD you might have noticed that Jesse’s sound is consistent all the way through the whole show. This is because of the no effects pedals he uses. The sound in the studio is a little different on some songs but is basically the same too. The only effects "pedal" Jesse uses is for synths.

  8. john frusciante - can't stop tone
    baillie

hi, could anyone help me get the edgy clean sound of the chili peppers riff can’t stop? i have a marshall avt 150, and a gibson les paul custom, and i know john plays through singlecoils, so also does anyone have any tips of compensating for my humbuckers?

  9. what'd'ya do?>
    Timmy

I want great tone. I love the classic tone of bands like AC/DC & ZZ Top. I may need invest in a delay pedal. Currently, I own a 50th Anniversary Fender Strat, Fender Hot Rod Deluxe Amp w/ footswitch(never use it). My pedal board consists of the following: Ibanez Tube Screamer, Boss Compresser/Sustainer, MXR Phaser & Dunlop Cry Baby. I do realize this may be a broad question. Any feedback or further questions would be appreciated.

      Quintos Henderson

i use delay between 2 and 3 and reverb between 3 and 4. and use my volume pedal although i dont think ita really needed.

make sure you play it with palm muting as well, thats the mistake ive seen some people make who’ve been playing from tabs, but it says so in the book to use palm muting. i also gradually lighten my palm muting as i speed up.

basically just use delay and reverb, alter it accordingly ans it should sound ok.

I can’t remeber where i saw it but if you google "acdc tone" or "angus young rig" i think you may find this interesting article about his setup. i think it was someone from a guita magazine interviewing him. anyway he says he sets everything at 5. But like this guy said except for volume n presence.

When i play back in black songs ill do half of the gain compared to the volume. For example, Volume=5 Gain =2and1/2. Maybe a tad more like almost 3 but thats it. I play with treble on 6, mid on 5 and bass on 5 and1/2. I played out of a small fender amp and an epi les paul custom.

      AC/DC – Back In Black

      Drive: 6 Treble: 5 Middle(aka contour): 6 Bass: 8 Reverb: 3 (Overdrive)

  12. Pls send me SRV tone for LIttle wing, learning it atm but i cant get that smooth sound he gets, he just adjusts his volume to get solo, tones, but his tone is so smooth and not fuzzy and really fat

    1. : Pls send me SRV tone for LIttle wing, learning it atm but i cant get that smooth sound he gets, he just adjusts his volume to get solo, tones, but his tone is so smooth and not fuzzy and really fat

Well i dont have time right now to go figure it out and listen to it but what is your setup? I know he played thru fender twins, big marshall stacks and some dumble amps. I think a lot of it would have to be because hes got good tube overdrive played quietly. I dont know what kind of amp you have but try getting a good smooth overdrive but dont let the distorsion get fuzzy or dirty. even if you need to crank it way up to get a clean overdrive. Then turn the volume down on your guitar and mess with the tones and pickup selectors. That usually gives me an easy quiet overdrive but still clean sounding.

  13. Playing Death Metal, Amp Marshall DSL50
    Linda

I have a Marshall 50DSL Head (and a 4×12 speaker cabinet) and would like to have tip and suggestions from the reader how I can improve my sound to become death metal sound (for instance Deicide`s Wretched Spawn cd).
Please suggest settings on my current dsl50, pre-amps that are preferable, and also other AMPs that could do the business:-)

    1. Re: Playing Death Metal, Amp Marshall DSL50
      Matthew

If you have a dsl, and can’t find a similar tone to an artist, you’re probably not cranking the amp enough. Play it loud to hear the true marshall sound!

  14. Cardigans - My favorite game
    Kent

The lead guitar in this song, sounds very cool. It is a very intense and a little fuzzy. Some suggestions to how I can get this sound? I use GT-5 and a Carvin 212 Valvemaster.

  15. Bon Jovi - Always
    Kent

How can I get that sort of vibrato/tremolo sound? I use an GT-5, and I hope some of you have some suggestions for what effects to use. Phaser f.eks or Tremolo??

    1. Re: Bon Jovi - Always
      satch

I play it ussing a very hard chorus, a little of delay, a little of tremolo, and a rotatory speaker simulation (and a little of distortion). It sounds similar, but not exactly. I’ve heard that the effect is called "mellotron" but i’m not sure, because a mellotron is a kind of "synthetizer", or something like that.

      Good luck!

        1. Yngwie tone
          Anonymous

K settings for Malmsteen is not typical. If you haven’t heard Malmsteen say “Play Loud” that’s the key. Put your bass and mids up, keep treble under half. Now for your gain, depending on your amp don’t crank it keep it at about half maybe a little more. Now for your master volume, play loud!!! Now if u do have some type of tube screamer or overdrive, crank the gain on that. Just use this as guide lines, it’s almost impossible to get yngwie’s exact tone using digital pedals and solid state amps. Good luck all

just bought fender usa standard strat and can’t wait to play it through my marshall mg15dfx with vox v847 wah, and original dallas arbiter fuzz face, can you recomend any set ups ie, which pick ups tones settings of guitar and amp etc, cheers bro, richard.

:This isn’t really for a strat, but I think it will work on one(I have a Yamaha RGX 121 SJ, with ZOOM G2.1u M-E pedal and a Roland Cube 30). Bass: 5, Middle: full, Treble: 7, Lo-Mid: 6.5, Presence: 4.5, Harmonics: 6. No effects other than slight reverb and..
Wah-Pedal VX, with the effect added before the Drive module with frequency diff. about 33/50. There you go!!

Ive got a fat strat, crybaby, fuzz face reissue, and out of my little 15w fender i got some good tones. Try these:
      Spanish Castle Magic-

Fuzz Face- (Since i have a reissue i dont have germanium transistors which were in the originals. When i crank my fuzz all the way it gets so deep that i cant even play 3 lowest strings, they get very fuzzy. I think the originals sounded much better but ive never played one i just heard talk about it. So to compensate, i increased the treble and lowered bass. This is just what works for me)

volume knob pointing at the lower left corner of the letter "I" from the "IN" sticker. and the fuzz knob pointing directly to the right horizontal. maybe a little more up or down depends on how intense you want the fuzz.
      Gain-2 to 2.5
      Volume-slightly less than 5
      Treble- 9 to 10
      Mid- slightly more tha 5
      Bass- between 2 and 3.

      Purple Haze:
Same Fuzz Face setting but try increasing the "Fuzz"
      Increase Gain to about 3
      Lower treble 5-7
      Mid- about 5
      Bass- 2-3
For the solo he activated his wah and kept it to the highest setting(most trebley) and used a roger mayer octavia for a higher pitched overtone. Certain parts of the solo he either lowered the wah or switched to neck pickup.

Try that for starters. If i have time ill try to get some more. Just sit down and listen to a song, pause it and adjust repeatedly until its good. Then write down the settings in a little notebook.

metallica has many different settings for a higher lead try 6 Bass 6 mid and 10 treb for a thick chunk 10 7mid and 5 treb gain on either is 8

: : how can i set for playing the metallica song?

        : clean? and disturtition?

What kind of guitar do you have? I used my les paul custom with that same amp and i could produce some good tones. MIne has effects too. They arent exactly right but its a tiny fender so its not gonna sound the same. I dont know what songs you want.

        Four Horsemen:
        Volume: 3
        Gain: 8-9
        Treble: 7-8
        Mid: 3-4
        Bass: 7-8
I havent plyed that in a while but i think that should sound good. If you keep the volume and mids low and everything else high it should produce a fuzzy heavy sound.
Check out some metal effects pedals, BOSS, DIGITECH METAL MASTER…
