I'm a not a native english speaker but a huge fan of John Mayall and J.B. Lenoir and couldn't imagine a more touching song than "The Death of J.B. Lenoir". After searching the net for hours to find the lyrics I finally decided to figure them out myself. So please forgive me if there are any errors, grammatical or concerning the sense and feel free to correct them.

John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers - "The Death of J.B. Lenoir"

from the "Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues: The Soul Of A Man" Soundtrack

A caress killed a friend and Chicago's thousand miles away,
A caress killed a friend and Chicago's thousand miles away.
When I read the news, nod (?)(note) came early in my day.

J.B. Lenoir is dead and its (it has ?) hit my like a hammer blow,
J.B. Lenoir is dead and its hit my like a hammer blow,
I cry inside my heart that the world can't hear my man no more.

J.B. had a struggled play (?) and appreciated blues in vain,
J.B. had a struggled play and appreciated blues in vain,
now the blues has lost a king and I've lost a friend that died in pain.

This comment may be too late; but I hope someone is still interested in the lyrics.

Re: lyrics (The Death of J.B. Lenoir Lyrics)

Here's what I think are some corrections (I'm also a big fan, but I am a native English speaker):

A car has killed a friend in Chicago, 'thousand mile's away
When I read the news, night came early in my day

JB Lenoir is dead and it's hit me like a hammer blow
I cry in my heart that the world can hear my man no more

JB Lenoir had to struggle, playin' unappreciated blues in vain
Now the blues has lost a king and I've lost a friend that died in pain

Re: lyrics (The Death of J.B. Lenoir Lyrics)

Does anyone know the chords?

Re: lyrics (The Death of J.B. Lenoir Lyrics)

You should not post lyrics without knowing the text.

There are lots of websites with the right version.

Here it is:
A car has killed a friend in Chicago thousand miles away,
A car has killed a friend in Chicago thousand miles away.

When I read the news, night came early in my day.
J.B. Lenoir is dead and it hit me like a hammer blow,
J.B. Lenoir is dead and it hit me like a hammer blow,
I cry inside my heart that the world can hear my man no more.

J.B. had a struggled play and appreciated blues in vain,
J.B. had a struggled play and appreciated blues in vain,
now the blues has lost a king and I've lost a friend that died in pain.

it is a great song that shows John Mayall's great sensitivity, talent and performence.

Re: lyrics (The Death of J.B. Lenoir Lyrics)

the 3rd stanza is "J.B. had a struggle playin' unappreciated blues in vain,"

The Death of J.B. Lenoir Lyrics

A car has killed a friend down in Chicago, thousand miles away
A car has killed a friend down in Chicago, thousand miles away
When I read the news, night came early in my day

J.B Lenoir is dead and it’s hit me like a hammer blow
J.B Lenoir is dead and it’s hit me like a hammer blow
I cry inside my heart that the world can hear my man no more

J.B had a struggle playin’ unappreciated blues in vain
J.B had a struggle playin’ unappreciated blues in vain
Now the Blues has lost a king and I’ve lost a friend who died in vain

note: blues is forever!

What a fantastic song this is. Really touched me - Keeps J B Lenoir alive.

Re: lyrics (The Death of J.B. Lenoir Lyrics)

The Lyrics to this song, clearly a heartfelt tribute to one of John Mayall's influences, goes like this:
A car just killed a friend in Chicago a thousand miles away

A car just killed a friend in Chicago a thousand miles away

When I read the news, night came early in my day

J.B. Lenoir is dead and it's hit me like a hammer blow

J.B. Lenoir is dead and it's hit me like a hammer blow

I cry inside my heart that the world can hear my man no more

J.B. had a struggle playin' unappreciated blues in vain

J.B. had a struggle playin' unappreciated blues in vain

Now the Blues has lost a king and I've lost a friend who died in vain

Re: lyrics (The Death of J.B. Lenoir Lyrics)

Great song... thanks for lyrics

Re: lyrics (The Death of J.B. Lenoir Lyrics)

-- "a car has killed my friend"

j.b. lenoir was killed by a heart attack caused by a car accident that had happened to him 3 weeks before.

Re: lyrics (The Death of J.B. Lenoir Lyrics)

You got a few of the words wrong ;)

A car has killed a friend in Chicago, thousand miles away
A car has killed a friend in Chicago, thousand miles away
When I read the news, night came early in my day.

J.B. Lenoir is dead and it's hit me like hammer blow
J.B. Lenoir is dead and it's hit me like hammer blow
I cry inside my heart that the world can't hear my man no more.

J.B. had a struggle playing unappreciated blues in vain
J.B. had a struggle playing unappreciated blues in vain
Now the blues has lost a king and I've lost my friend that died in pain.

Re: lyrics (The Death of J.B. Lenoir Lyrics)

Big fan myself, this song is a treasure. If you don't mind, I'll change the lyrics some:

: from the "Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues: The Soul Of A Man" Soundtrack

: A car has killed a friend in Chicago a thousand miles away,
: A car killed has friend in Chicago a thousand miles away.
: When I read the news night came early in my day.

: J.B. Lenoir is dead and its hit my like a hammer blow,
: J.B. Lenoir is dead and its hit my like a hammer blow,
: I cry inside my heart that the world can't hear my man no more.

: J.B. had a struggled play and appreciated blues in vain,
: J.B. had a struggled play and appreciated blues in vain,
: now the blues has lost a king and I've lost a friend who died in pain.

Incidentally, released in 1967 on Crusade, a man cut down just when the establishment would have wanted but his roots live on in America through music like this and more. Fantastic...

Re: lyrics (The Death of J.B. Lenoir Lyrics)

When I read the news, night came early in my day.

Re: lyrics (The Death of J.B. Lenoir Lyrics)

A "caress" cannot killed anyone. I cannot figure out how a would-be fan of JB Lenoir did not understand the words "a car has killed a friend".

Anyway follow the link http://www.arts.ualberta.ca/~blues/Death%20of%20JB%20Lenoir.htm to find out more about the lyrics.

Re: lyrics (The Death of J.B. Lenoir Lyrics)

A car has killed a friend in chicago, thousand miles away : JB Lenoir was a blues singes and died of a car accident

when I read the news, NIGHT came early in my day
JB lenoir is dead and it's (=it has) hit me like a hammer blow

;)

Re: lyrics (The Death of J.B. Lenoir Lyrics)

Indeed, incredible song! This is my take on the lyrics, the last verse is very different. Maybe I just like to picture JB as an unappreciated blues genious :)

A car har killed a friend in Chicago a thousand miles away
A car har killed a friend in Chicago a thousand miles away
When I read the news, night came early in my day

JB Lenoir is dead and it's hit me like a hammer blow
JB Lenoir is dead and it's hit me like a hammer blow
I cry inside my heart that the world can't hear my man no more

JB had to struggle playing unappreciated blues in vain
JB had to struggle playing unappreciated blues in vain
Now the blues has lost a king and I've lost a friend who died in pain

Re: lyrics (The Death of J.B. Lenoir Lyrics)

thanks a lot

Re: lyrics (The Death of J.B. Lenoir Lyrics)

First two lines are:

A car has killed a friend in Chicago thousand miles away (2x)

the rest seems okay...

Re: lyrics (The Death of J.B. Lenoir Lyrics)

its "a car has killed a friend"
thx for your lyrics man and wasn't able to find other on the web

Re: lyrics (The Death of J.B. Lenoir Lyrics)

I think the first line begins with "a car has killed", not a caress. Not sure though.
