John Frusciante

Again differently, again surprising, again unexpectedly. A Sphere in The Heart OF Silence is called the fifth album from John Frusciante Sixpack, which blows up the borders of the hearing and above all for some months with as original as high-quality Songs and experiments publication habits. On A Sphere in The Heart OF Silence works John Frusciante in the duo with Josh Klinghoffer, with which he already stands since its solo album Shadows Collide With People in close musical connection. On the new album they leave the mechanisms of the classical Songwritings for the time being and pursue a freely flowing association stream, which leads into quite unusual Gefilde. The large atmospheric width lets this album a characteristic – even within the very variation-rich 6er-Reihe -, on which above all intensified key board employment is noticeable become also. Josh Klinghoffer is to be heard on A Sphere in The Heart OF Silence as singers.

John is playing a Martin 00-15 from the 1940s. He has a couple of them.

        Nope. 0-15s.

I have some Martin o-15’s, which are really small guitars, from the late Forties and early Fifties. I have two brown ones and a blond one."

RE: It’s a gretsch guitar but john’s one says les paul on the scratchplate.
Answer: I’ve seen quite a few pictures and vids of him playing that guitar, and all i can see is the picture of the the Falcon on the gold Pickguard. Have you got a link to the photo? Otherwise, I could only suggest you’ve not quite seen it correctly, or he’s swapped a pickguard for some reason(but Gibsons dont have the words "Les Paul" written" on the pickgueard either, so this ones a mystery.

: I listen to the chilipeppers a lot, im just wondering how john gets that funky sound out of his guitar. obviously because its a stratocaster, but is it the model or any accessories that he added? if there are any pickups that might get close to that tone, id like to know
      : Thanks
well he uses only vintage strats and telecasters from the 50’s and 60’s but i think most of that funky tone can be acheived through techniques like ‘staccato’ or twanging the strings onto the fret board when playing single notes.
you see he tends to play quite agressively if you watch any live shows.

Does anyone know what john uses to get that lovely fuzz type effect when the chilis jam before they start. He uses it on the intro for Live in Hyde Park.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    1. Re: Johns Intro fuzz/distorion.
      johnny_rocks

the hyde park intro is just the marshall and the bridge pickup of his strat, and the part where he uses the wah pedal is a Boss DS-2 with the wah behind it. i do the same and it sounds quiet authentic 🙂

He uses a fuzz pedal combined with a compressor, that’s why he get’s that fat sound. Wich pedals exactly; I don’t know =)

  4. John Frusciante
    Richard Bratt

john frusciante reminds me of everything.
he personally gives me love by his music, people hear his music as music, personally i hear it fell it touch it takes me to a place that fills my body with love and passion
every word he sez is on perpose wich makes it beautiful, his voice is so lovley and his guitar playing is something that no one will be able to duplicate.

john frusciante should teach all of you guitarists out there to not take the way you play seriously…who cares if you arent that talented, look at how simple but brilliant most of his songs are!!!

    salute the master

    1. Re: Guitar styles
      Frank

What? John Frusciante plays without talent? that’s like renting a movie you already own – it doesn’t make sense. John has talent, why do you think his sound is so distinctive from every other guitar player out there? You may be talking about simplicity which is where John Shines. I think guitar players should know that the notes you choose to play are as important as the notes that you don’t. John doesn’t play millions of notes in order to express ideas and feelings, is that what you’re talking about? I mean, you have to have knowledge of notes, scales some chords to play but you don’t have to be a Steve Vai or Petrucci in order to be good. A lot of great musician aren’t even well versed in theory and yet they are Icons i.e Hendrix, BB King, SRV, Eric Clapton, Ian Fugazi McKaye. But John just so happens to be well versed in theory but he doesn’t play scales at lightning speed or rely on shreding although he can but he serves the music not his ego.

    1. Re: john live
      johnny_rocks

i came up good with using my marshall head (plexi reissue) and the bridge pick up for the main sound. for the solo i kick in the boss ds-2 (fully cranked). i think he´s doing it the same way.

    2. Re: john live
      Preid

Tis a combo between his compressor which is cranked up near to full, and his tele’s vintage neck pickup which gives it that old twang noise. To get the distorted sound for when hes solo’in you’ll need a boss distortion pedal, not 100% percent sure what kind it is, the picture of his rig his ass blocks out most of the main pedals. Its a simple distortion anyhow.

If you use the OD-1 onto of your OD channel in your amp, medium gain on the amp and 2 o’clock on the pedal. You can achieve john’s od sound

The semi is a 1950s Gretsch White Falcon, I think his strats are both 1962 American Stratocaster and 1955 American Stratocaster, one maple one rosewood

: : hi, any Chance anyone has the tab for can’t stop where he strums the openin.

: Its simply 5h7 on the 5th string

if you’re talking about Hyde park he bases everything around this chord:
        —-7—-
        —-x—-
        —-7—-
        —-5—-
        —-7—-
        —-x—-

just play around with e minor pentatonic from there and you’ll get it. Remember though–you don’t want to play what john plays, you want to play around what he plays.

Barney, I have been looking for this effect too as I play Universally Speaking in my band. I strongly believe he uses a Electro Harmonix Deluxe Electric Mistress flanger. He definently has one in his set up as you can see it on the Slane Castle dvd.

    1. Re: Easily?
      Oliver Manning

: Does anyone know wich are all the effects that john uses on easily at hyde park version?

I think for the most part of it he using the tone hes using on most of the album, which i think was achieved by driving the tubes on his amp, to give that crunchy sound he got on it. personally i dont really like that sound and i think his sound on slane castle was much better but its him playing not me! for the solo(s) i think he’s using either the electro harmonix big muff pi or zvex fuzz factory as i know he owns/has used both. he seems to be using wah near the end of the song, so id put that down to the ibanez wh10, as according to him that’s the only wah hes ever used. hope thats some help. if anyone could correct me thatd be cool.

John uses two standard fender strat single colis in the neck and bridge position. His middle pickup is a reverse polarity pickup, to louden high end and thicken low end, while eliminaing hum.

he uses fender stock vintage single coils, as well as seymour duncan antiquity single coils, and fender noiseless single coils i believe

    6. Re: John Frusciante guitar gear
      Talia Ward

I’m not sure of what John’s pickup are exactly but I used to work for a guitar manufaturer who sold his pattent to fender guitars & they were going to be put into all the fender elite guitars. You can buy them by themselves, they are a part of the Hx series. Basically in the 50’s they produced a fender strat that had the most amazing sound unfortuately there were a lot of gremlins that penetrated via all other electrical equitment in the room ie. fluro lights etc…hence the humbucker. What my boss Chris Kinman did was invent a single coil pickup that got rid of the gremlins & fuzz but didn’t detract from the original sound. As far as I know that’s what’s been going into all the elite fenders, so I s’pose that could be what john uses.

Bulls**t! Where do you guys get that shit?? An Acoustic simulator for under the bridge? NO WAY! It’s just a boss CS-2 and a boss CE-1. THe CS-2 is used in the intro and the CE1 for the outro. Whatever, leave that Frusciante guy alone! You’ll never nail under the bridge!

Yo dude. no need for hostility. Anyways, the song under the bridge was, and i quote, "Stolen from David Bowie’s Andy Warhol" John said this himself at a live performance for his solo albums.

Am fascinated & intruiged by john frusciante. His amazing abilities & approach on guitar, art & life ignited a fire inside my spirit many years ago – an awakening that turned me into a freak/free thinker & I was never the same again. His teaching are more than words & come in the most pure form. Sounds like when a dolphin sighs – heart feels through souls open eyes. Love travels through space & time & I pray he feels much love for being alive. John Frusciante is the MAN!
