  2. Fender Deville 2/12's
    David

I had to replce the factory tubes in my Fendre DeVille amp and i am experiencing crackling off of the 6L6’s ( like its attempting to short out when i increse the volume). I was told this could be due to the biasing adjustment. I replaced all the tubes . Could this be the problem? The number of the level of the tubes are 4. I live in a rural part of New Mexico and am also having a hard time finding someone to service the amp. Any Suggestions?

  3. Fender London 185 Head on CL Chicago
    London185Head

I got this nice London 185 head a while back and decide to sell it as I am downsizing my gear. I have just put it up for sale on CL Chicago. Any interest out there? I am in Chicago suburb – Palatine/60067. Hit me up if you are interested and we may be able to arrange something.

  4. Blackfaced Showman Speaker Impedance
    DomC.

Are each of the speaker inputs of the Blackfaced Showman rated at 8 ohms? I surmise this cause supposedly the original showman speaker cabinet was rated 8 ohms. Am I wrong on this? Can a 4 ohm cabinet be used without the amp overheating?

The total impedence of the amp is 8 ohms, so you could use 2)16 ohm speakers in parallel, or 2) 4 ohm speakers in series.

One is a manual, the other a schematic for the Pro 185 series. They describe a similar unit to mine but not exactly the same, so I dont know how much use they’ll be when I send mine in for service. Still looking for ones for my amp, which looks like the one in the forum.

I, too, would be grateful for a copy of the owners manual. I do not have a schematic, but am trying to troubleshoot a channel 1 preamp problem. The input jack is physically damaged, so I am replacing that for starters, but suspect more problems. If you are successful in finding a schematic, I’d be happy to contribute to its cost to get a copy as well. Thanks. Bert Toews [email protected]

  5. did fender ever produce a 6x6L6 head?
    Augustine Nocera

A fairly knowledgable friend insists that Fender produced a variation of the Showman head that sported 6 (that’s six) 6L6’s in the power stage. I can find no reference to this design. I’m fairly sure that the SUNN Colisium Leads had a 6x6L6 power stage, but I’ve never heard of Fender offering this much power. Anyone know?

Yes, It was a Super Twin, and Super Twin Reverb

ALSO: the Studio Bass, a 200 watt all-tube using the same basic design as the Super Twin. This combo was mated to an E-V 15" speaker. I have just a "chopped" head varient and it’s a great sounding gigging amp. Just wish it had a selectable impedance out (it’s fixed at 8 Ohm).

Sounds like you might have some loose filter capacitors on the circuit board.

I’ve got a Pro 185 that I purchased from a pawn shop with the wrong or possibly bad gain pot on the distortion channel. I owned the same amp 15 years ago, so I know what it’s supposed to sound like. The gain pot has at some point been replaced, and has a couple of jumpers soldered to the casing. Does anyone have an original schematic or know just what size and configuration is stock for the gain pot in this particular model? THANKS!!

I think that this problem could be solved with the use of

      Justin

Just curious as to what you paid for the amp. I have one that I’m looking to sell but I have no idea what a fair asking price would be. From all I’ve gathered, around $800 would be a descent price. Can you give me any ideas??

      1. Re: Fender Studio Bass black cover
        Aaron Ni

$800 is a decent price, $1000 if it’s mint. That’s assuming it’s been recapped though, I bought a fairly ragged Fender Studio Bass from someone for $200. It’s been used as a regular gigging amp, sides & back stripped of tolex and handles added to the sides (Thank god!).

        But yeah, $800 is decent.

      Hi,
I just picked up a fender studio bass and my first plan was to use the case to build a guitar tube amp, but it is actually in pretty good shape. Since I play guitar, I was wondering if it makes sense to rebuild this as a bass amp and resell it or convert it to a guitar amp?
      Thanks,

The skx100r is quite a rare beast from all accounts.Certainly in the UK where i come from i have only heard of one other ,and that was on a national fender forum(now defunct). So yes….seemingly rare. They date from around about 1990 and unusualy made in Taiwan but are actualy quite sturdy and well built.Nobody seems to have any knowledge as to the existance of Fender factories in Taiwan either….strange.I have used mine for about 3 1/2 years now and it has never let me down.It also has a very unique dual over-drive that can crunch effects up really nicely….although at the same time can be very aggressive.
Sounds like you got a real bargain there!!!!

I got my amp about 4 years ago for £90.00.Its never been gigged and is in brand new condition. They are as lod as you could want and as soft as you want. Great for Blues, rock or jazz..
I’ll be selling mine as i’m getting a twin reverb.I jsut love the sound. However you can get the same sould using a Bodd FDR 1 stomp box

I rebuilt and re covered one of these amps last year. I have schematics and their updates if anybody wants a copy just ask. The only problem they seem to have is that there made of custom wood rather than plywood. They were a budget line from fender and are are not supported in parts as I understand. They seem to run and sound good. Electronics quality I would say is well made.

Stumbled across your post whilst looking for info on this amp. I just purchased one of these to use for an Alesis electronic drum kit we have. I only paid $75.00 usd and it seems like a great buy. It seems to have nice features and reverb. It is in great condition . I was wondering if anyone knew if this amp originally came with a footswitch. It has the plug-in for the footswitch on the face plate but, I purchased it from a subsequent owner and he had no idea.

Jon, I have a Super Showman head and one XL1000 Powered Speaker cabinet loaded with eight 10" speakers. I also have original covers, footswitches and cables for the amp. I paid $300 for everything. The head is just a multi-channel SS preamp with all sorts of bad effects in it, including reverb, tremelo, a really pathetic fuzz, and a built-in Dimension IV canister intended to simulate a Leslie effect. Two 70 watt SS amplifiers are located at the top of the cabinet for a total of 140W. This is one LOUD rig. The built-in fuzz is useless, and without it what you’ve got is a totally clean and harsh-sounding amp, but for some reason it responds very, very well to a cheap Dano Daddy-O. I have used the amp for several shows at medium-sized clubs over the past ten years, and it hasn’t given me any trouble, though they have a HORRIBLE reputation for unreliability. Everyone derides them for being total garbage, yet this amp is 35 years old and still kicking it out. At shows, other guitarists can’t believe that a) it’s still working, and b) it’s Solid State. It is a rather imposing sight on stage. And yes, Jan Akkerman used a Super Showman with two XL2000 4×12 Powered Speaker cabs.

Steve, it’s BJ! (yes, that BJ). Forshey just gave back MY Super Showman head, and I think you should know that for some types of music, the Fuzz is GREAT. Very tweaked-out Iassac Hayes style stuff.

  17. ProTube Twin and Pro Reverb Panel Lamp Problem
    Jim Azotea

I own both a Twin and Pro reverb (Pro Tube Series) that have a problem with the front power lamp going out. I replaced the lamps but there still is a problem. The power light goes out when the amp has been on for about an hour and is HOT. Its like the socket is not making connection with the lamp circuit because of thermal expansion of the socket. I bought the Pro new and the “Evil Twin” second hand but in excellent condition. None of the amps have been moved or banged around.

Is there a known mechanical problem with the lamp socket? Is there a different lamp that is longer? Anybody else have the same intermittent front panel lamp problem?

I’ve worked on a lot of fender amps over the years and never seen one do that unless the bulb itself is bad. Try resoldering the wires going to the lamp socket. While you’re at it check that the lamp itself has continuity. If so try using some high temp solder on the tip of the lamp, after a while they tend to squish down and get shorter. It should be round on the end, about half the size of a "BB". Sorry those bayonete lamps only come in one base size that fits your socket. Try putting kelvin wires on the lamp to verify your connection to the socket?

I think this problem could be solved with a specially designed MCT with Strip-lining to reduce parasitic losses and special thermal managment implemented throught the use of a
polyarrimid fiber lid on the MCT. I have the
      patent on that.

Did you notice if the tubes associated with the reverb and trem. were getting very hot before they effects went? If so, the resistors associated with the reverb and trem. are probably burned out. About a $50 replacement job for a guitar tech.

I recently bought a Twin Reverb, 100 watts; it works well, even if aesthetics are a bit ruined.
This is the very first time that I own a vintage amp.
I don’t know how to date it.
I’ve been told it is from the late Seventies, about ’78 or ’79, but since it’s a 100 watts it should not have been made prior to 1977, isn’it?

I play Alot of 80’s Porn rock for videos and I use the same kind of Amp. It is a 1993 Issue of the earleir 1978 Twin Quad that was never relaesed. I think it is very cool and unique that you have one of the amps too. There was only 48 made. I used to work for fender. If you want write me.

I’m trying to get the biggest sound out of my ’67 bassman head. I play it through a 4 x 12 cabinet (although a cheap one). It overdrives awesome, but I want both more treble and bass. I would like to try that hendrix/page trick of running both channels but, don’t know how to do it. Are there certain tubes that are better for this?

    1. Re: bigsound bassman
      Dave Dell'Era

Steve, you can try a bias adjust to try to get more voltage to the power tubes. If you want to get louder, try 4 ohm Clestions, Black Widows, or Eminence speakers- one or the others will be more efficient. To run both channels together, plug guitar into the first jack of the 2nd channel. Then plug one end of a short shielded cord into the first jack of the 1st channel, then plug the other end into the 2nd jack of the 2nd channel. This usually makes the amp sound bigger. I also love my ’67- great tone.

      Jason

Hi, My name is Jason and I have a Fender Vibrolux that I bought in 1991 for $200…a steal, no matter how you look at it. It is a silverface Vibrolux Reverb with a 5U4GB rectifier and all the trimmings. It had the dual fender 10” drivers with the rectangular magnets (alnico?). I was told, 10 years ago, that it was probably a 1978. (no date stamp on the tube chart) I used the Fender dating method on their website using the date codes from the transformers and I came up with approximately 1/65. Here is the order:

      Transformer date codes:
      606 4-14
      606 329
      606 4-25
      606 4-19
And I guess this is the serial as it was stamped into the metal chassis of the amp itself: A31227
      Can someone help me?
