  3. Fender Deluxe Reverb Amp Problems
    Phil Ramsey

I have acquired a Fender Deluxe Reverb Silver Face from a friend.
The amp functions; however, it has a high pitched ocillating hum when
    in use.
I do not beleive this to be 60 cycle hum. Rather, since it is from the late
60’s or early 70’s could it be a tube that needs replacement?

  4. Frankensteined quad reverb
    April

I’ve run across what looks to be a fender quad reverb that someone has repackaged as an amp minus speakers, it’s set up to use stack-style, I played it and it sounds as a quad reverb is described, but is it worth picking up, or should I hold out for something like a Marshall jcm900? They’re asking $400 and were willing to barter. The number stamped on the back is A42011, it’s a 100 watt-er…. A

    1. Re: Frankensteined quad reverb
      gary

I have a late production quad, and wouldn’t dream of parting with it. MANY people who owned
Quads did the "Showman/Bandmaster" cutoff thing to them, or put them in a Twin cabinet.

The bitch is that they ruined a real powerhouse when they could have just bought a pro
      or twin.

As it is, there are a few Quad cabinets around, and if you bought it ( I think you should)
it’s really at home with the 4 x 12 arrangement at 4 ohms. You could also pickup a new half
stack cab with selectable impedence and use it as it is.

The Quad is a REALLY clean amp. If you’re looking to drive the snot out of it don’t bother,
it’ll crack your eardrums before you get satisfaction. You’ll like a Marshall better.

I have a little Marshall 15 watt amp that I use once in a while as a "pre-amp" using the
headphone out, and I also play around with reverb on the Marshall AND the quad
at the same time, it’s a neat effect.

If you want a clean sound, this is the amp for you. However it is hard to overdrive this amp. Best to use a distorion or overdrive petal for dirty sounds. I cant believe someone would cut that amp up!! Hard to find and very dependible.

    3. Re: Frankensteined quad reverb
      a

i suppose it depends on the shape of the amp… i have a ’72 quad reverb loaded with 16 ohm celestion vintage 30’s (earplugs, anyone?) and all NOS tubes… its my favorite of my "loud" amps (including an early JCM 800)… its got the fantastic fender growl at ampitheater levels (and reverb… look out, dick dale)… in other words, if you play blues bars, do everyone a favor and get a deluxe…

  12. Is there such an amp as quad-reverb?
    ray

I have been in touch with a person selling a 1972 Fender amp that he calls a quad-reverb. Is there such a beast. Could it be a Super Reverb? I think they had four speakers.

      Old Geezer

: I have been in touch with a person selling a 1972 Fender amp that he calls a quad-reverb. Is there such a beast. Could it be a Super Reverb? I think they had four speakers.

Yeah man, there is such an amp. Its basicly a Twin with four speakers. I have one. It was made in 1972. I bought it used in 1976. It has two channels, one with volume, treble, mid, and bass. The other has volume, treble, mid, bass, reverb, speed, intensity,(these last two are for the tremelo), and master volume. Each channel has a bright switch. Both channels have two inputs. The amp has four twelve inch speakers . The speakers are 16 ohms wired to end up with four ohm impedance. Silver faced. 100 watts. The cabinet measures roughly 32"x26"x10". It is an open back cabinet. The amp is heavy and bulky. Mine has casters. In its original state it has all the changes of the post CBS designs. It is a very clean amp with headroom for days (meaning that the sound stays clear at loud volumes). Mine has proven to be a very durable amp. I have never had any major problems with it. The reverb is excelent. As is the tremelo. Mine has Oxford speakers but Fender used several different kinds of speakers, so you would have to check the code on the speakers to figure out what the ones in that amp are. The Quad came with 6L6s in it(power tubes). I changed these out in favor of 5881s.(You probably already know to re-bias as with any power tube change) About four years ago I had the circutry wired to the black face design. This is a fairly easy mod for any tech to do. The sound, while good in its original state, is now better. It does’nt sound excactly black face, but close. Fender used different transformers in the CBS era along with some other different component’s make. From what I can read, this is what is making the difference. But it is still a very good sounding amp. Very strong. It has almost no distortion on its own (even with the master volume), but if you put a good overdrive/distortion pedal in front of this amp…..heaven on earth. I love my amp. If you can afford it, get it.

Yes there is a quad reverb, i am not sure on the year. On the back is stamped 120 volts 60hz 350 watts 3.5 amp. 135 watts Rms. There is a # A763499 T-2 This amp sounds great it has 4- 12" speakers . on the front there is 2 inputs normal, and 2 vibrato each has its own volume and a bright switch, and there is a master volume which is a push pull .

yes fender built the quad reverb. its like a twin on steroids 135 watts rms w/4 speakers. i have a quad head reported to have belonged to albert collins as he would cut off the heads to seperate the speakers to cut down on microphonic distortion. completely rebuilt and ready to go.
          interested?

          bighollow

That is a SF MV Twin with four twelves…hear one on the Albert Collins live album…other variants on the SF MV Twin were the Vibrosonic (1×15) and the Super Six (6×10). All require a note from your doctor before hauling out of the back of a flatbed truck…because it will not fit in most cars.

Yes there is and it’s a great amp. It’s basically a twin/super six 100w two channel amp with 4-12" speakers. At 100watts it would be great for bar gigs but probally too much for the home. Hope this helps. BTW this amp seams to be rare or at least hard to come by—might want to snatch it up!!!!!

    4. Re: Is there such an amp as quad-reverb?

I have heard of such a creature — basically a Twin with 4 12" speakers (or maybe a Super with 12 inchers instead of 10)

: : Does anyone have any information about an early 70’s
: : fender amp….The Fender 30 ??? The fender 30 was made in the early 80’s. It was one of three "number" series amps. 30, 75 & 130 head. It was Fender’s (unsuccessful) attempt to create a high gain channel switching amp a la Mesa. It was discontinued when Paul Rivera began designing amps for Fender.

        1. Re: fender 30 amp
          David Sigman

I have one and I can tell you it is just as good or better than most Mesa’s I have played. There was a limited run of them but, not the same reason that Steve says. I have a letter from a Fender employee of that time. He states that they only made about 100 of these and Dan Armstrong(ampeg) designed most of it. The reason there were so few because no one in Fender R&D would support it because the felt slighted by the fact that Dan Armstrong designed it. They are very rare and very cool. They have a whole lot of headroom and decent Reverb for an amp their size. Let me know if you have any other questions. I know this topic might not interest you anymore but, what the heck.

            Jan Wouters

Hello David (hope this comes through),

Found you while I was surfing over the net looking for info on a Fender 30 amp. Actually I got a Fender 30.
Got it last August. Had some strange and funny sounds on it. But after cleaning pots and socket, a recap, some new tubes an a bias adjustment everything works just fine. I’m not a genuine guitar player, I play bass, but it’s a very nice amp. Take it to rehearsels and let our lead guitar player play through it. It sounds a lot better than his practice amp, a Peavey Bandit 112.
Not much known about these amp. Diffendent designer names are mentioned, Ed Jahns, Bill Hughe and you come up with Dan Armstrong. And then about the quantaties: one hunderd or 675 in every year it was made (1980 – 1981). You say you have a letter from a Fender employee. Could you scan it and mail it to me. I would be very pleased. Trying to learn as much about the amp as possible. I’m a bit of a Fender freak. Play Fender basses through a Studio Bass, a Bassman 100, a Bassman 70 and a Bassman 10.I even got a 1966 Blackface Bassman Amp. Like to hear from you,

            Greetings, Jan

He is right, it is for reverb. I purchased one way back when..I run a sonic maximizer and a Peavey buthcher cab, 4×12…it is insane. I have friends that still talk about my "Chain saw" sound. Most of the bands we played with had to be miked..but we didn’t..soo much power. I looked at the owners man and it doesn’t say anything on how to fix..just adjustments and who to hook up, 8 ohm or 16 ohm…I have thought about selling it but I just can’t part with it…I still might cause I would like to get a smaller amp just for practice..

So I took it to my local store to send back to fender UK to fix it, they said it would be "like new" guess what the carrier lost it in transit, so I am waiting for redress from store, after reading all of your comments probably the best thing that could have happened.

      john

Like everyone has said, it’s a great sounding amp! But if you’re considering buying one, make sure there aren’t any broken pots, sliders, or other components. Most of the components used were very low quality and it’s impossible to find replacements. Fender doesn’t have any cross-references for their part numbers, and most of the components used are now out of production. Good Luck.

I have one with a number of problems. I did not know that parts were so hard to find– I was considering fixing it myself. For those of you in So.Cal., Fender has a factory in Ensenada– maybe that is where some parts could be found. I would sure appreciate any help or suggestions re: fixing this amp. One of the channels doesn’t always work and lately I can’t get any sound to come out at all on either channel. There also may be a problem with the EQ. Is this thing just junk now? I hate to write off 100 watts of Fender power. I’ve had it for 10 years, bought it used for $100, and it was working then.

I own one of these. The footswitch is definitely a 4-button– I’ve been trying to locate one for 2 years as I never got it when I bought the amp used in 1987. It is a solid state amp– no tubes, but a great tube sound. Ebay pops up with a footswitch once in awhile, you just have to be diligent about checking.

: I have a 1×12 London Reverb that I had repaired and it cranks. I love the tone on this amp. However, I do not have the footswitch. Does anyone out there have a footswitch for this amp they want to sell? It is a 4-button job, serial # should be 01-xxxx (acc: Fender)

I don’t have a foot switch either but have a really nice sounding London Reverb for sale – $275.00. Got a ’69 Bandmaster and am having it rebuilt, need the money…

I know this is an OLD thread, but I just found it. I have a London 185 head. I loved that head, but two pots were broken on it and now it’s dead anyways. Plug it in and it hums, then about 2 seconds later the fuse blows. I have no schematic for it, but maybe someone could use the parts that are good? I now have an M-80 and am looking for schematics just in case. Email me if interested.

: I have one with a number of problems. I did not know that parts were so hard to find– I was considering fixing re: fixing this amp. One of the channels doesn’t always work and lately I can’t get any sound to come out at all on eith Is this thing just junk now? I hate to write off 100 watts of Fender power. I’ve had it for 10 years, bought it used for $100, and it was working then.

I just finished repairing mine aftere hunting for parts everywhere but Mars.I bought it used in 1998 for $75-it only had the clean channel and most ofthe knobs were broken.
As I found out, behind the broken knobs were broken pots, and some of them were touch switches. They were tough to locate.
After replacing all of the above,I still had no effects,eq,or reverb,as all of channel two was dead.By using the "technical thwack" method of tracing amp problems I found the problem.
I fed a constant signal into the input from a cassette deck (keep the volumes down) and tapped and twisted the connections, bang! it came on by twisting the 10 pin connector from the main control board to the effects board.I resoldered all the pins and reworked the stupid 10k ohm resistor on pin 3 to R32 and she’s crankin!
Question:How can an amp pulling 200 watts from the wall put out so much (100 watts)? That’s phenomenal,a 50% efficiency from a tired old design.Don’t believe it,A 100 watt Marshall tube amp (plexi) will crush it to death, but the Fender sounds great in it’s own right.
Use the hints the Pros use and you probably won’t need any parts.

: Can anyone tell me about the London Reverb model from the early 80’s?
: Is it a Rivera design like the concert? Thanks, harry
: If you are talking about the Fender London Reverb, its a great amp. I own one and love it. Its a 100 watt with a single 12" ..but you could get it with 2. Two channels, channel 2 being the dirty channel, 2 mid pots, pull bright on the treble, and a 5 channel equalizer, foot pedal for channel, reverb, effects loop and a fourth I can’t remember (its been a while).

I have an 83′ London Reverb. It has the 4 footswitches with it. It was a gift to me 3yrs ago from the original owner who said it did not work and in its day, it was loud.
I have replaced the input jack, 1- potentiometer, both ribbon cables, both capacitors, and both output transistors. I have found intermittent cutting -out issues with bad solder joints. I have also added roller legs. It has taken me 3 yrs. because I have other amps to use instead.
This gift was from my cousins husband who bought it new from Scanlan Musick in Detroit, Mi. in 1983. It was his first amp back then.
I finally played through it a couple of days ago for approximately 45 minutes. I love this amp. Sounds wonderful. It is missing one “flat” style slider knobs for the eq. section. So if anyone has one-just for originality, I will gladly buy it from you.

Remember, “There is no back-up plan”. TURN-IT-UP!
