Cortez guitar

I received a black Cortez Les Paul copy for Christmas around 1974 or so. It was my first electric guitar. I had nothing to compare it to but I used it all the way through school from 7th grade on. I was in a band through high school and on. Bought more guitars to fill in the blanks for different sounds but I tell you what, this guitar to me is priceless. Not only for the emotional reasons for who gave it to me but to me it plays like no other guitar I've ever played. So I guess the value of it depends on different factors. I've set it up to my personal liking, learned a heck of a lot, and fell in love with music, all with this guitar. I think they were low end guitars of the time, but values and workmanship are different now, right? Can't blame you for keeping it.

Cortez Les Paul copy. Lp22 b/c

Hi, loved your post. Do you still have the black lp copy? Just got one... its 2020. Love it. Any pics?

Cortez C 302

I have a 3/4 size Cortez (c302) Looking for a value. It's a nice sounding guitar. Really great character.

Cortez 1970 Les Paul Copy

My friend gave me this guitar, said if I fix it, I can have it. Needless to say, I fell in love with the guitar. Everything is original on it. The pickups, in my opinion, have an amazing old school sound that can't be duplicated. I wouldn't trade or sell it for anything.

Good Luck. PW

1970's Cortez acoustic 12 string

I bought this guitar from a girlfriend before she went to CA. Mint condition. Its sound gives you goose bumps. It had the information pasted inside, but the paper came loose andt got misplaced. But, I'd still like to know what model I have. Have looked at the pix on all the Websites but no luck. Everyone on the online sites say Cortez guitars aren't very popular or worth much. Why do you say the opposite? Just curious. Thanks.

Re: looking for ballpark price for cortez guitar

Way back in 1978 I paid $325 for a new black Cortez Les Paul copy at the music shop in the Brementown Mini Mall in Tinley Park IL. I traded it for an Ibanez LP copy a few years back. I still have some picture of it if you need it for reference.

Re: looking for ballpark price for cortez guitar

I found my Cortez thru a mutual friend. I ended up with it through some trading, and went right to work on it. It has a little belly swell from several years of being strung with mediums. A few small nicks in the lower belly and wear in the fingerboard in the second thru fifth fret from fingernail impression. This is an indication that it is at least 25 or more years of age. It is fully lined and has really nice blocks of either Mother-of-Pearl or Abilone all up and down the fretboard. Same with the perfling and also around the soundhole. I am restoring it as carefully as I can and hope it becomes my favorite player. All the research I have been able to find, indicates that it is indeed a valuable instrument, so that made me happy with the trade.

I also have a Cortez and have no idea of the price, mine is a 6 string accoustic and sounds as good as a Martin. I also just found this on the 'net:

"Instruments previously built in Japan circa 1969 to 1988. Distributed in the U.S. market by Westheimer Musical Industries of Chicago, Illinois.

Cortez acoustics were produced in Japan, and imported to the U.S. market as an affordable alternative in the acoustic guitar market. Westheimer´s Cortez company and trademark could be viewed as a stepping stone towards his current Cort company (See CORT)."

: i come into contact with a 12 string acoustic cortez, woundering what it might br worth. It is in fair condtion any answers please contact me. p.s. its fairly old maybe about 10 or 15 years/ that is interesting, since I play a cortez guitar as well. It is a 6 string, made in mexico, (I think,) steel strings, and I bought it new in 1975 for $85.00 It says "Cortez" inlaid in the headstock, and I would not sell mine for $1000. That probably won't help, but at least you know that there are others out there.

Re: looking for ballpark price for cortez guitar

I just started playing- I have a Cortez 12 string acoustic guitar- it's my dad's. Some guy owed him money and didn't have it so he asked if my dad wanted his guitar. It's quite old- we've had it as long as I can remember so it's probably over 20 years old. It sounds great, although not when I play it :)

Flame maple?

Does this guitar have flame maple on the backs and sides?I'm having a similar problem

Re: looking for ballpark price for cortez guitar

Im in the same boat, only I have a Cortez four string electric bass. I found user reviews saying theyre super nice quality butttttttt after that Im stuck.

Re: looking for ballpark price for cortez guitar

I just bought a small classical Cortez C-306 Guitar today for $50. It's a pretty low end moddel as it doesn't even have a truss rod.
The action is kind of high but I can lower it a little by sanding off the bottom of the saddle.
It would be a good beginner guitar. I have it in my studio just for quick referencing either a bass line, rhythm or lead.
Seems to be alright. Stays in tune : )

Re: looking for ballpark price for cortez guitar

i also found this 12 string made by cort its like $250 USD the site is http://www.cort.com/acoustics/standard/index.html

The guy was real happy to make the deal, that makes me think i asked for too little. I cant find any information on the guitar, so its hard to put a value on it. good luck

Re: looking for ballpark price for cortez guitar, ORIGINAL PRICE

Last night I began searching for the price of the Cortez J6800 Acoustic Gull series guitar. I couldnt find anything, so I figured I could take it straight to the source. I did my research and found out that the westheimer corporation was in charge of Manufacturing Cortez guitars, so I emailed them asking about my J6800, and here is the response I got,

"Regarding the J6800 Cortez guitar that you found. We were able to locate a
Cortez price list dated 1983 and the J6800 was on the price list. The MSRP
was $239.95. We do know that the J6800 were first manufactured in the mid
1970's."
