can't find any info on Multi-kord pedal steel guitar

Posted by Bryce Austin on Tue, 05/23/00 - 11:45:57.

I have ran acrossed a pedal steel guitar that my neighbor played as a kid. They say he was real good and I can find it any where on the net. It was made by Harlin Bros. Indpls, Ind. and has Multi-Kord wrote on it. Can you possibly help me on this matter. We are looking to restore it. Thank you very much and any help would be very much appreciated.

Multi chord 6 string 4 pedal

If anyone is interested the tuning for the 6 string is A6th, I have lot's of hand written tab for the instrument from the early 1950's as my dad learned to play one as kid, I would be willing to copy some off to a pdf file just don't flood me as my time is valuable to me.. lol

Neck and pedal tunings for 6 string, 4 pedal mult kord

I took lessons on one for about a year as a very young child.
Played a lap steel for a couple years before that.
I found one a few years back and purchased it.
Unfortunately, someone has tampered with the pedal tunings.
the best I can remember the neck was an open A tuning, but
I have no idea what the pedals were tuned to.
Today having played other instruments I would assume that
the pedals provide things like Minors and Minor 7. but have no idea
where to start to re-tune the pedals.

If you have a diagram of how to retune the pedal bars and the
actual notes that the strings are tuned to in open position, I would
be so gratfull to acquire a copy. I would like to spend some time
in my retirement seeing what I could learn on it to play by ear
as i do with all of my other instruments

Any help from you would be deeply appreciated, sir

thank you
Bill

Tuning

I know the pedals change the tuning like from A to E.. In some of the tabs I have they change Key..
I would post dome tabs but this site won't let me post PDF files.. junglecruzr at hotmail and ask for the mutli tabs I will be happy to send you some.. maybe it will help you figure out the pedal tuning

Multi-Kord: 6 String, 4 pedal, single neck

Bought it in 2006. Never played it as I left the country and stored it. Now would like to but the strings that came on it are old and I fear they'll snap if I try to tune it which I don't know how to on a MK. I would like to know what type of strings to get for my MK. Some people say you have to buy them individually depending on what tuning and stress load will be placed on each string, but this isn't a traditional pedal steel and I know that when I was taking lessons all those years ago, you could buy a set of strings for these instruments.

Also, if anyone has any information on how to tune it, I'd be willing to pay for a good copy of an original document. These are great instruments. My instructor (Oahu method) had a son who played one. Since then (late 50s, early 60s) haven't seen many other than on eBay.

Thank you for reading my entreaty.

I found a multi-kord Harlin Bros H10B pedal steel last week.
I had moved to tennessee in 1990. I had cancer and didn't think I had much chance to be alive now. But I made a mistake that saved my life. I ate a bulb of garlic and the garlic killed the cancer so fast. One day I was dieing, I ate a bulb of garlic thinking i was eating a piece or clove and wa la the garlic killed the cancer in a matter of hours and I am alive today. (no doctors) just garlic.
now the other day 6/15/2010. I was looking in my closet
and discovered a wooden box that I didn't recognize, I got it out a found a Harlin Bros H10B pedal steel. Now that I think about it, I remember going to Washington DC to look at this enstrument But I didn't remember buying it. I'm so glad I did buy. It's a little beat up, but I am playing it every day. I am actually useing it a new song I'm working on. Hay, Lifes Good at times.

Where can you get parts for six string multi-kord steel?

Re: can't find any info on Multi-kord pedal steel guitar

I just picked up an 8 string dual neck 4 pedal Multi-Kord. I'd sure like to hear from anyone else owning such a beast. Any suggestions on weak points and proper maintenance? This is my first pedal steel.

Re: can't find any info on Multi-kord pedal steel guitar

For anyone interested, I inherited an 8-string, six-pedal Multi-Kord pedal steel from my Great Aunt Gaila Medley along with several other great instruments. She always called it a hawaiin guitar. This is a fold up model and it is very complete and original with the original tweed case and all of the original manuals and sales brochure that have all of the tuning information in them.

If you're interested in obtaining a copy, please e-mail. Mine has had two cables replaced with some sort of hardware chain, but other than that just needs to be cleaned up, serviced and tuned. It works just fine, but I'm not a steel player. I've been playing guitar for 25 years and 15 years professionally, and hope someday to find the time to make some good music on this old Multi-Kord. In the mean time, I thought I might be able to help some others looking for information on them.

Thanks,

Harlin Brothers MultiChord

Hi
I saw you're post on GuitarSite. I would love any and all information you'd be able to give me on Harlin Brothers Multichords. I just got a 6 string 6 pedal. I know almost nothing about it. So tuning(open and for the pedals) would be appreciated SO MUCH. Heck, any and all information would be appreciated.
Thank you
Matt

Re: can't find any info on Multi-kord pedal steel guitar

I have a Harlin Bros. Multi Kord and can't find information on the guitar or the company. All steel guitar instruction books I've found deal with 10 string ones. Mine was made with only 6 strings and 4 floor pedals. I would like to know if the company is still in operation so perhaps I can get an instruction book on that particular guitar so I can learn to play it. Thank you...Dorothy

Tuning the neck and pedals of my Multi Kord

Hi Mr. Lambert
I have a four pedal, 6 string and played and took lessons on one as a small child.
I found this one and bought it a few years ago and found that someone had tampered with the pedal tunings.
My teacher in Noblesville IN never taught me anything about specifically what the pedals actually did.
I assume today that they are used to form minors, minor 7, etc chord variations. At age 5 that would have made no sense to me anyway
Today I play by ear, but at the time I just used the Harlin Bros sheet music.
I would love to get back to this instrument in my retirement, but am lost without the pedal tunings.
the best I remember the neck is tuned open A

If you have a diagram of or at least some form of a tuning chart for the entire instrument I would so love to see/have one and would be so grateful.
Thank you
Bill

MultiKord 6 string tuning

My dad use to play one as a kid.. then moved on to pro 10 string stuff.. anyway after he passed I found sheet music and charts for the multikord.. I ask him once and he said it was tuned in the key of A but I guess you could tune it in E like a dobro if you wanted(not sure) my aunt still has the MultiKord and was trying to find out what it was worth if anything..

What would I like to know?

Re: multi-kord steel guitars

The Multi-Kord guitars were built in Indy, and I think that at least one of the Harlin brathers is still living. I do know that the Multi-Kord was one of the first, if not THE FIRST pedal guitars available, as Paul Bigsby was building pedal mechanisms into his console steels around 1950-53. The difference was in the engineering. That's about what I know, but if you have a question I could answer, e-mail me back, THANKS, SLICK.....: I have ran acrossed a pedal steel guitar that my neighbor played as a kid. Re: multi-kord steel guitars

Jay Harlin and his brother started building a pedal steel in the mid '30s. By about 1936 or '37, his "Multi-Kord" was selling in music stores. It was offered in single, and later double-necked versions, and with 6 strings (or later 8 strings) on each neck. Gibson released a pedal steel about 1939, but had to discontinue it after a couple of years because they had copied the double-finger Harlin-designed changer (without his permission). Gibson redesigned their guitar and re-issued it in 1941, but due to the bulk, weight, and expense of their version, they never had the success that Harlin did. Harlin made thousands of his rather simple (but innovative) steel guitars, and they sold well until Fender entered the market in the mid-to-late '50s. The Multi-Kord finally faded from existence in the '60s, but many are still found cheaply on the used market. They are (at best) a cheap, basic, entry-level pedal steel.

David Lindley type player

Donny-Got your name from Steely McNeill. A band of seasoned musicians from various bands in Balto is forming a Jackson Browne tribute band. Need our David Lindley. Planning to play/tour once or twice a month. We have current venues that will book the band. Obviously being a David Lindley/Jackson Browne fan is pretty important. look forward to hearing from you. ps Lindley plays a lot of lap steel as well....Look forward to an e mail. Thx

Re: Multi-Kord steel guitars

I started taking steel guitar lessons from Harlin Brothers in 1953. The Multi-Kord was a staple at the studio and I got my first one the next year. In retrospect, its simplicity was its beauty, although I did not really appreciate that until I became a mechanical engineer years later.

I taught at Harlin Brothers from 1957 to 1964, eventually becoming their senior instructor and leader of the Multi-Kord orchestra. As a tinkerer, I made a few modifications including a specialized basic tuning (E C# A E C# A) which made a couple of the pedals work pretty hard, but the harmony effects were great. I also added a 7th string at one point, but gave up on that idea. The pedals allowed a 1 1/2 step change in pitch either up or down, so they were quite versitile.

Jay Harlin's personal machine was a 15-pedal model. I was blessed to play that often in performances. It was never duplicated, although an 11-pedal model enjoyed some degree of success. That was a beautiful 8-string machine which was purchased by some of the comtemporary steel men of the time. Expensive though.

Note on engineering. I could never "mess up" a Multi-Kord even though I tried a lot of combinations such as 2 pedals at a time. I played a Fender once and was too quick on a pedal change, and it went balistic. Again, the simplicity of the Multi-Kord was the key.

On a personal note, I do not believe Jay ever filed any patent infringement suits although he could have done so. He was more interested in the furtherance of technology than most or his contemporaries. I am proud to have known him.
