  1. Multi Kord Pedal Steel Guitar

I played a Multi Kord Pedal Steel Guitar when I was very young, I played mostly Country Western music to please my parents, but, in 1958, as a teenager, I wanted to play Rock & Roll! I stopped playing the steel and eventually lost it somewhere in my travels while still young. I would definitely love to find another Multi Kord and see if I can still remember how to play it. At one time, I guess I was pretty good on it, even auditioned for the Grand Old Opery.

I have a Del Oro Guitar that was my grandfathers, I also have a picture of him with this guitar when my cousin and I was about 1 or 2yrs old, I’m now 53, I would like some information about this guitar. I has the boat with two men in it on a canal and I would guess that the city in it would be Italy. The holder on the guitar is made of rope twisted probably was very beautiful back in the day. Del Oro is at the top of the handle. Could someone please give me more information about this guitar??

Who built del Oro guitars? Where are they from? I have one my dad was given in payment for services in the 1940’s. He taught my sister’s and I to play. It was damaged but a friend of mine tried his best to repair it. It has dice and 4leaf clovers.

  3. Hawaiian on a pedal steel
    georgekovo

I started playing on an old "Stella" with a raised nut when I was 8. I switched to a regular guitar in the early 60’s when the Beatles invaded but picked up a Sho-bud Maverick (1 knee lever – 3 pedals) in the early 70’s when I was gigging with a country band.

Unfortunately I packed everything away when the kids came. Last April we moved to SW Florida and when packing up to move I uncovered the old shobud. I have a question that hopefully you can help me with. I want to re-learn and play Hawaiian style. Most things I read say the E9th tuning is primarily for Country. And the C6th or C6/Am tuning is difficult for beginners. I was also thinking of maybe not connecting the pedals and playing this as a 10 string console because another musician told me that playing Hawaiian on a pedal doesn’t sound very good. Do you have any suggestions? Any advice you could offer would be very much appreciated.

I have seen a pedal steel guitar for sale on Ebay! The only info I have been given is that it has JJ on the front and a serial number on the undercarriage. It looks similar to a Fender in colour.

      Hi, Warren…

Seeing your post took me back to my first guitar. A small Del Oro once owned by my aunt, and covered with autographs of local northwestern Missouri "Opry" stars from the 40’s or 50’s. The guitar itself had a Spanish guitarist and dancer (if memory serves) stenciled (decal?) on the face.

When I saw a reply, I was hoping someone might have had some actual info on these guitars instead of just some eBay opportunist.

      Best regards…

        Hi James:
Thanks for your reply to my post. My guitar doesn’t have any stencilling or graphics, although I understand many did with different themes. It does have the classic Del Oro label that is common. Also very distintive cutouts in the guitar body. Do you have any info resouces? Best regards,
        Warren

HI: Bought an old guitar in a canvas case(brown) had a card attached to leather handle referring to “student” Inside was a guitar in excellent shape. I’ve never seen one like it; had a “Dobro like disk” made of wood, a movable high bridge with metal saddle,
all hardware tuners, and nickle plated tailpiece.Had grill cut outs on upper (neck) bouts was obviously set up for lap style playing.

I got a Multi-Kord steel pedal for my birthday. And I love her but I can’t find any music for her, I do read music, but I’m not sure where to find the correct note on the strings. Ex: where is middle c on the what string, what fret? She has 6 strings, and 4 pedals (which are not hooked up) I don’t know how to hook them up. I’m very new to steel pedal. AndI think I need to think about should I keep her or sell her and get smething that is a student one.
I anyone has any music for a 6 string multi-kord steel pedal, please let me know, or any instructional info, please let me know that also.
    Thank you..

**** This is my personal opinion and others may wish to comment. The Multi-Kord has some limited functionality but was limited to the number of pedals and no knee levers, so it won’t do the things that single 8, 10 with 3/4 or more will do. But it gets you in the door of the Steel world. You may want to try to set it up sorta like the top 6 of an E9 or C6. Harlin brothers had some tuning charts and music that may be obtainable try E-bay, but that may not be where you want to ultimately go. I’m leaning toward the top 6 of an E9 with mine.

You probably have some replies by now from Feb. You’d have to submit a pic of the guitar for somebody to identify it. I have one that says "Made in Canada" with a blue ribbon design, but no name!!!! When I was taking Hawaiian guitar lessions in late ’40’s, Nick Manoloff books and accessories were quite common. I have a Roy Smeck "bullet" bar. Roy was a very popular player and recording artist. If Nick ever recorded anything, I’ve never seen it. I’m sure he was most popular for his Hawaiian and Spanish guitar methods of learning. I’m one of the many "lap" steel players these days.

      Have a good day.

For anyone interested, I inherited an 8-string, six-pedal Multi-Kord pedal steel from my Great Aunt Gaila Medley along with several other great instruments. She always called it a hawaiin guitar. This is a fold up model and it is very complete and original with the original tweed case and all of the original manuals and sales brochure that have all of the tuning information in them.

If you’re interested in obtaining a copy, please e-mail. Mine has had two cables replaced with some sort of hardware chain, but other than that just needs to be cleaned up, serviced and tuned. It works just fine, but I’m not a steel player. I’ve been playing guitar for 25 years and 15 years professionally, and hope someday to find the time to make some good music on this old Multi-Kord. In the mean time, I thought I might be able to help some others looking for information on them.

        Hi
I saw you’re post on GuitarSite. I would love any and all information you’d be able to give me on Harlin Brothers Multichords. I just got a 6 string 6 pedal. I know almost nothing about it. So tuning(open and for the pedals) would be appreciated SO MUCH. Heck, any and all information would be appreciated.
        Thank you

I have a Harlin Bros. Multi Kord and can’t find information on the guitar or the company. All steel guitar instruction books I’ve found deal with 10 string ones. Mine was made with only 6 strings and 4 floor pedals. I would like to know if the company is still in operation so perhaps I can get an instruction book on that particular guitar so I can learn to play it. Thank you…Dorothy

        1. Tuning the neck and pedals of my Multi Kord
          Bill Ribkee

          Hi Mr. Lambert
I have a four pedal, 6 string and played and took lessons on one as a small child.
I found this one and bought it a few years ago and found that someone had tampered with the pedal tunings.
My teacher in Noblesville IN never taught me anything about specifically what the pedals actually did.
I assume today that they are used to form minors, minor 7, etc chord variations. At age 5 that would have made no sense to me anyway
Today I play by ear, but at the time I just used the Harlin Bros sheet music.
I would love to get back to this instrument in my retirement, but am lost without the pedal tunings.
the best I remember the neck is tuned open A

If you have a diagram of or at least some form of a tuning chart for the entire instrument I would so love to see/have one and would be so grateful.
          Thank you
          Bill

        2. MultiKord 6 string tuning
          Paul G

My dad use to play one as a kid.. then moved on to pro 10 string stuff.. anyway after he passed I found sheet music and charts for the multikord.. I ask him once and he said it was tuned in the key of A but I guess you could tune it in E like a dobro if you wanted(not sure) my aunt still has the MultiKord and was trying to find out what it was worth if anything..

The Multi-Kord guitars were built in Indy, and I think that at least one of the Harlin brathers is still living. I do know that the Multi-Kord was one of the first, if not THE FIRST pedal guitars available, as Paul Bigsby was building pedal mechanisms into his console steels around 1950-53. The difference was in the engineering. That’s about what I know, but if you have a question I could answer, e-mail me back, THANKS, SLICK…..: I have ran acrossed a pedal steel guitar that my neighbor played as a kid. They say he was real good and I can find it any where on the net. It was made by Harlin Bros. Indpls, Ind. and has Multi-Kord wrote on it. Can you possibly help me on this matter. We are looking to restore it. Thank you very much and any help would be very much appreciated.

          Donny Hinson

Jay Harlin and his brother started building a pedal steel in the mid ’30s. By about 1936 or ’37, his "Multi-Kord" was selling in music stores. It was offered in single, and later double-necked versions, and with 6 strings (or later 8 strings) on each neck. Gibson released a pedal steel about 1939, but had to discontinue it after a couple of years because they had copied the double-finger Harlin-designed changer (without his permission). Gibson redesigned their guitar and re-issued it in 1941, but due to the bulk, weight, and expense of their version, they never had the success that Harlin did. Harlin made thousands of his rather simple (but innovative) steel guitars, and they sold well until Fender entered the market in the mid-to-late ’50s. The Multi-Kord finally faded from existence in the ’60s, but many are still found cheaply on the used market. They are (at best) a cheap, basic, entry-level pedal steel.

Planning to play/tour once or twice a month. We have current venues that will book the band. Obviously being a David Lindley/Jackson Browne fan is pretty important. look forward to hearing from you. ps Lindley plays a lot of lap steel as well….Look forward to an e mail. Thx

        2. Re: Multi-Kord steel guitars
          Dick Brooks

I started taking steel guitar lessons from Harlin Brothers in 1953. The Multi-Kord was a staple at the studio and I got my first one the next year. In retrospect, its simplicity was its beauty, although I did not really appreciate that until I became a mechanical engineer years later.

I taught at Harlin Brothers from 1957 to 1964, eventually becoming their senior instructor and leader of the Multi-Kord orchestra. As a tinkerer, I made a few modifications including a specialized basic tuning (E C# A E C# A) which made a couple of the pedals work pretty hard, but the harmony effects were great. I also added a 7th string at one point, but gave up on that idea. The pedals allowed a 1 1/2 step change in pitch either up or down, so they were quite versitile.

Jay Harlin’s personal machine was a 15-pedal model. I was blessed to play that often in performances. It was never duplicated, although an 11-pedal model enjoyed some degree of success. That was a beautiful 8-string machine which was purchased by some of the comtemporary steel men of the time. Expensive though.

Note on engineering. I could never "mess up" a Multi-Kord even though I tried a lot of combinations such as 2 pedals at a time. I played a Fender once and was too quick on a pedal change, and it went balistic. Again, the simplicity of the Multi-Kord was the key.

On a personal note, I do not believe Jay ever filed any patent infringement suits although he could have done so. He was more interested in the furtherance of technology than most or his contemporaries. I am proud to have known him.

I seen the name "Del Oro" on both mandolins and guitars (identical logos on the headstocks). There seems to be a connection with KAY Guitars. In the book "American Guitars, an Illustrated History" by Tom Wheeler there is a color photo of a "Del Oro" and a reference to it being a "Bargain Basement Special" see color photograph #106. KAY was known for their low cost entry level guitars although they did produce some high end axes.

So my guess is you have a KAY marketed as a Del Oro.

I know this comment you made is old, but I have a MultiKord on sale from the 50’s. It’s not a 6 string, unfortunately. It’s a 8 string. If you are interested, email me.

Mr. James – I need to get my hands on one of those tools for tuning the pedals – the deep socket with the screwdriver through it – do you happen to know where I could get my hands on one of those?

          Thanks,

Indpls, Ind. and has Multi-Kord wrote on it. Can you possibly help me on this matter. We are looking to restore it. Thank you very much and any help would be very much appreciated.

          Danny Meador

          Good Morning,
I hope this finds you well. I was looking for some of the info that it sounds like you may have. I would be interested in talking to you about what you have and maybe buying some of the copies for tuning and setup. If you have any of the old music that the Harlin Brothers used that would be great also. I took lessons there as a kid. I have my multikord and the old Gibson G8 amp that still works. I would love to be able to work on some of the old songs that we performed at the Luau’s. Please, if you can help contact me via email.
          Thank you
          Danny

        3. Neck and pedal tunings for 6 string, 4 pedal mult kord
          william ribkee

I took lessons on one for about a year as a very young child.
Played a lap steel for a couple years before that.
I found one a few years back and purchased it.
Unfortunately, someone has tampered with the pedal tunings.
the best I can remember the neck was an open A tuning, but
I have no idea what the pedals were tuned to.
Today having played other instruments I would assume that
the pedals provide things like Minors and Minor 7. but have no idea
where to start to re-tune the pedals.

If you have a diagram of how to retune the pedal bars and the
actual notes that the strings are tuned to in open position, I would
be so gratfull to acquire a copy. I would like to spend some time
in my retirement seeing what I could learn on it to play by ear
as i do with all of my other instruments

Any help from you would be deeply appreciated, sir

          thank you
          Bill

            Paul Gates

I know the pedals change the tuning like from A to E.. In some of the tabs I have they change Key..
I would post dome tabs but this site won’t let me post PDF files.. junglecruzr at hotmail and ask for the mutli tabs I will be happy to send you some.. maybe it will help you figure out the pedal tuning

      2. Multi-Kord: 6 String, 4 pedal, single neck
        Allen

Bought it in 2006. Never played it as I left the country and stored it. Now would like to but the strings that came on it are old and I fear they’ll snap if I try to tune it which I don’t know how to on a MK. I would like to know what type of strings to get for my MK. Some people say you have to buy them individually depending on what tuning and stress load will be placed on each string, but this isn’t a traditional pedal steel and I know that when I was taking lessons all those years ago, you could buy a set of strings for these instruments.

Also, if anyone has any information on how to tune it, I’d be willing to pay for a good copy of an original document. These are great instruments. My instructor (Oahu method) had a son who played one. Since then (late 50s, early 60s) haven’t seen many other than on eBay.

Thank you for reading my entreaty.

        Allen
