Bluenote Music

Bluenote Music was the largest vintage guitar, fx, amp dealer between Washington DC and Nashville.

Their showroom used to be in Salem Va off I 81.

Unfortunately they are no longer in business, but this is what Steve Carlisle had to say about it when they were still going…

“I have over 20 years experience in appraisals, repairs, restoration, and sales. We converted a bar to a larger showroom and now have the only ‘guitar bar’ I know of! We buy, sell, trade, consign all manner of vintage instruments. We understand the collector and the player and appreciate both. We cater to the professional musician and love to keep them employed! Come to see us -either at our sight or at our ‘guitar bar’ -serving up only the finest in vintage instruments!”

Have an alverez cutaway dreadnaught – plywood top, mod 5064, ser#45988, also has "30. 3.79" stamped on the label. Anybody have a value and info on this guitar? Bought a new solid spruce top 3 months ago, an RD20SC for more than was paid for the 5064. It sucks comparitively and the 5064 was smashed and rebuilt.

I have recently acquired a 1975 Fender Precision (F-Series Bass, Serial Number 636211). The bass is in okay condition, with some cosmetic blemishes, but sounds excellent, no background noise even with volume turned up to max. I was wondering what a bass like this might got for.

I have the same guitar built Oct 31 1979. All I know is that Takamine was sued by Martin as this was an EXACT copy and were tolt to stop production. Mine is in mint shape and is still the best sounding and playing 12 sting that I have or anyone who plays it have played

Jeremy, I have an F400S I bought new in 1978, had never heard of Takamine at the time, just thought it was a very good quality ax for the bucks ( $300?). Have been in love with it ever since.
It is a copy of a Martin 12 string, of course, they are made in Japan, our 1978 models probably aren’t real valuable, but I still feel it’s close to the Martins I have, would not part with it, though I’ve always thought of putting some better tuners on it!

      2. Takamine and "The Lawsuit" that never was.
        Oldhway

Before Martin created their Sigma guitars they had contracted with Takamine to develop a less expensive guitar for them to market. These guitars were produced with the express permission and by request of Martin. They were never marketed and Martin formed Sigma. There is much speculation as to why and Tak fans like myself like to believe that it was because the quality was very good and Martin was afraid it would cut in to their US built guitar sales.
Ultimately Martin formed Sigma (which they wholly owned and controlled) as a more affordable line of guitars.
        No lawsuit.

  4. 88' Gibson SG Appraisal
    Paul Sabo

I bought a Gibson SG new in 1988 candy apple red, two humbucking pickups, two volume knob(one for each pickup) but with only one tone knob.serial number: 80507559 made in USA. still looks fine, plays great. Paid about $550 with hardshell case in 88′. Really just curious what it might be valued at now. Been looking around at other guitars. Dont think I want to sell. Just curious if anyone knows what it could be worth or where I could get it appraised. Thanks.

I have owned one of these beauties since 1979. If you look in the front opening towards the base of where the neck attaches to the body, you will see a serial number. The first two numbers are the year it was made (mine starts with 77 for 1977). The second two numbers stand for the month (mine is 11 for November). As far as value, one sold online for $316 at the Guitar Museum, but I think they are worth much more than that. I saw another with an asking price of $600, but I wouldn’t give mine up for $6,000.

My sister bought me a Yamaha CJ818SB guitar from a San Antonio Texas pawn shop in December 1987 as a used guitar for 200 dollars ($US). This guitar had been played heavily for a long time — it had pitting on the rosewood fretboard beneath each of the strings for the first 3-5 frets. I can only imagin the guitar was at least 8 – 10 years old at that time. It’s serial number is 20217058. It is a dark colored sunburst guitar with full bindings. The finish is in very good condition to this date and I play it quite alot. It seem to be the guitar I use the most even though I have some other highly valued guitars. I have retrofitted mine with a bone nut and Baggs pickup.
Other than that I have no clue to the age, material, or value. I wouldn’t sell mine for any imaginable price. I too am trying to find information on this guitar.

I hate to break it to you…but I don’t believe there is any such thing as a truly "vintage" Yamaha musical instrument. If it’s Japanese, it just doesn’t carry the "vintage" value of American or German guitars. Sorry.

I have an Ibanez Artist too. Solid body, mahogany with AAA-graded maple top. Fretboard is ebenholz with wide pearl inlays. It has two "golden" humbuckers and two extra mini-switches: one which turn pick-ups single coil and other for phasing. According to its serial the guitar is made in 1986. I bought it this autumn and paid 700 euros for it (about 700 USD).

: Does anyone have any knowlege as to the value of this model? It’s a well made German classical guitar that I found at a flea market. It’s been well taken care of and it plays and sounds great.

No info on yours, but I have an "Oscar Teller" c. the same age. Very nice story behind it too. My late father accepted it as a payment for building a stone fireplace in a customers house c. 1962!! The inside label is too faded to read the model no. and year, but it reads ( 11 to 1 clockwise) "OSCAR TELLER" and ( 10 to 2 anti-clockwise) "MEISTERWERKSTATTE IM GITARRENBAU". It was played by my eldest brother for 20 years or so and I have had custody of the family heirloom for the last 20 years!! It still sounds beautiful, albeit looking the worse for wear. I have considered buying a replacement but cannot find anything on the market to match it’s tone for less than £1000.
Please let me know if you find anything about the maker. The value is inconsequential because I would never let her go!! I suspect you won’t either if you play.

I also recently aquired an Oscar Teller guitar at a flea market. I believe it is a 1966 model but the label is difficult to read. I have tried extensively to find information on this guitar I spoke via email to a luthier, cant remember his name, but he said that at best they are some second rate guitar for students. I love mine and all who have heard it play have never heard such a distinctive sound. I also was in contact with Richard Smith who plays one and he appears to be a pretty good guitar player. He says that for playing jazz, his is the best guitar he has ever played.

: : : Does anyone have any knowlege as to the value of this model? It’s a well made German classical guitar that I found at a flea market. It’s been well taken care of and it plays and sounds great.

: : No info on yours, but I have an "Oscar Teller" c. the same age.
: : Please let me know if you find anything about the maker. The value is inconsequential because I would never let her go!! I suspect you won’t either if you play.

          : : Paul Gregory
          : : Huddersfield, England

: I also recently aquired an Oscar Teller guitar at a flea market. He says that for playing jazz, his is the best guitar he has ever played.

i too own an oscar tayler guitar, discription: (11-1)"oscar tayler" (2-10)"meisterwerkstatte im gitarrenbau", "modell nr: 3 anno: 1968" (the 3 and the 1968 is written with a pen) it has a drawing of a man playing an old instrument that looks like a mandolin, it also has the dealers label: "Pter B. Pedersen"
its been well kept and i play on it all the time, my mom told me she got from a boyfriend in highschool.

            Lionel Shrago

I wonder if the model might be 61p rather than 619. I bought a 61P in 1966 from Burdon’s of Whitechapel, London for the princely sum of about £26. I had not really expected to keep it for more than a few months as I am not much of a musician but nearly 40 years later I still strum now and then! I invested in a hard case and my 61P is in excellent condition apart from some drying of the seams. I believe the back is not rosewood as suggested but maple. I have an introductory guitar tutor (Collier, by Frederick Noad) in which the Oskar Teller is mentioned in the same breath as Tatay and Martin; that is good quality without being a classic. BTW No. I won’t sell mine either. It has a wonderful rich tone.

: The Teller-family is still making acoustic guitars
            : and Zithern in South-Germany.

I have an Oscar Teller NR acoustic nylon-string guitar on whose label is printed, Made in Germany, Oscar Teller Meisterwerkstatte Gitarrenbau, 1966. I obtained it from the sister of a classical guitarist whose student guitar it was back then. It appears to have a veneer back.

My boss just came across an old guitar case. Has the G.S.B. printed label on the back. Its black with the coffin look. I found 1 on ebay, but I would like some info on this. 39inch long 5/1/2 inch deep. Has brass handle with old skeleton key lock. I couldnt find much info on it.

        1. Oscar Teller guitars
          Mario

I firmly believe that Oscar Teller guitars are guitars that have received
no exposure in the U.S., and their prices reflect a growing trend for an
increased exposure now days, with a very high potential for price increase.
I suggest not to sale yourself short when selling. If you bought it at a
low price it’s advised to keep in mind its potential. They are great
guitars. I am a collector of a variety of vintage guitars, and the Oscar
Teller are without doubt among my favorites. Great construction that
transcends generations, best choices of precious tonal woods, which lead
to sensitive and versatile sounds and styles. Congratulations if you own one.

I bought one from my oldest guitar shop buddy back in ’92. All the guys owned it for a while, then sold it back to the store. I paid 250 for it with the original hardshell case from Takemine. It stays in tune for a long time, and has always played well. The action is damn good but the tone is a bit tinny due to the lack of space in the body. I’ll die before I sell it. It’s spruce and rosewood with nice detailing.

I’ve got an EA-360. I bought it new at a music store in Portland, Oregon in 1985. It’s electric blue in color. It still plays great. I remember that it hung on the wall, unpurchased, for a long time. I made the owner of the shop an offer. It’s been my signature axe ever since. There’s a photo of it (while I was on tour in Japan) on my My Space page (Casey Nova, Willamina, Oregon). I’ve written 800 songs (700 bad, 100 good) on this "Floating V." It’s still being played live. I will die with this axe in hand. Well, perhaps not literally.

I happen to have two of these cool guitars. They were purchased Directly from Kaman Music in 1983. They are NEW OLD STOCK. One in Red and the other in Blue. I had the third one in dark grey/black. It was sold over 25 years ago for $300.00 to an inmate at Donovan State.
The remaining two have lived rotated from the one case to my office wall in bimonthly rotation.
I am StevO , I own a multiple generation Family owned Ma & Pa Brick n’ Mortar Type of Music Store in SanDiego, CA.
The store originated in 1952. We grew to 5 stores in the 70’s and 80’s. The Great Olde Music store heydays.
Or, should I say hay DAZE…
We would attend the Winter Namm Shows in Aneheim, CA and would purchase entire Vendor Booths. This one year, we purchased the entire Takaminie / Ovation Booth. These guitars were part of the deal. They are so cool.
At first they would not release them and sell them When your spending 50k, I guess that made the difference..But why not better tuning machines?? Covered gears???

According to your SN, your guitar was made in 1977, Dec 15th, and was the ninth guitar made that day.

Excerpt from guita serialization 755 pdf:
              TAKAMINE
The eight digit serial number on Takamine instruments can be
deciphered by breaking down the number into four groups of
              two digits, thus:
              YYMMDDXX = (YY)(MM)(DD)(XX)
The first two digits (YY) indicate the year; the next two digits
(MM) indicate the month; the third group of digits (DD) indicates
the day of production; and the remaining two digits indicates
the ranking in the number of instruments produced that day. If
              a nine-digit serial number
is encountered, assume that the last
              three digits indicate the production
              ranking.
Example: 91060979 indicates an instrument manufactured
June 9th of 1991, and was the 79th instuments manufactured
              that day.

It was given to me a few years ago and had all kind of stickers all over it so i took it to a music shop to
get it cleaned up and they told me i had a nice guitar. Because it was made in Japan it might have a little value
to it.As i don’t know how to play it has become a dust collecter to me,i would appreciate any information you can give me.
Will be waiting for your response.
        Thank You
        Patricia.

I also have one of these guitars which I purchased in NYC from Silvers & Horn. It is in near new condition and has been overseas with me and still has excellent tone. Original cost was in the $300+ range. It is known as the “Lawsuit” edition because Martin guitars filed a claim against T. but later dropped it. I also would like to know its value?

      Francesca,
I bought one of these for my brother’s birthday in 1982.He still plays it.Not much info on these guitars, even on the Alvarez website. At least 4 other persons/owners on that site’s vintage message board are also wondering about this particular guitar.I would hold onto this axe if I were you,I saw Paul McCartney playing one on a televised Prince’s Trust concert in the mid 1980s.He probably still owns it.You never know ,it might one day be worth quite a bit more than it originally cost.

Francesca: The Alvarez 5051 could be valuable. If it is Alvarez made by Yairi and it is signed by him around !972-75, the guitar is probably in the $1,000 or close to it. If it has some imperfections, it could go less, let’s say $800. If it needs full restoration, it can go as low as $400. But not less than that. Make sure you keep the label intact if you do restoration. Those were the first ones made my Kazuo Yairi himself without the help of apprentices. Good luck

: I’m looking at a 1971 <b style="color:black;background-color:#a0ffff">5051</b>, at what seems to be a good price. However, it is not signed. Does that make a big difference?

: I too have a 5051. Mine is near mint, although I don’t know how to date it. I too saw the Paul McCartney footage on YouTube. Mine has a saddle pickup, but no controls, so it may be an earlier model than the on that Paul used, which did look to have a volume knob. This is a very nice guitar, although is not really cutout for todays (2009) tonal and performance standards. I also own a Talyor 614, and 914, as well as a Guild JF-55, which all blow this out of the water as far as tone and usability. I was using this guitar live for a few years, but has since been retired to the home where it spends most of it’s time in it’s (non-original) Case. With all this said, I will probably never sell it because it is a beautiful & unique piece. I believe it is a solid spruce top, and laminate Mahoghany back & sides. Makes a great collectors piece for sure, and may hold some value, dueto the fact that it is a rare guitar, and that Paul McCartney has used this instrument in a very public showing. you should probably hold on to it. But, if you do happen to know a guitar collector who is a big Paul or Beatles fan, show them the youtube footage, and ask howmuch they would be willing to pay for it. That way we can get an Idea of what the high end of the market might look like for this guitar. Enjoy.

            KyJones64

Good Evening. I too have an Alvarez Artist model #5042. It is a deep red color, a very beautiful guitar indeed and plays smooth. My guitar has the brass plate on the back of the headstock and the numbers read 000072. I purchased my Alvarez new in 1982, I think I paid around $350 for it back then! These guitars were produced in 1982, all hand-made in Japan by Alvarez to commemorate the 60th anniversary of their parent company St. Louis Music (SLM). I really don’t have much info for you, I sure wished that I did, I know that these are extremely rare guitars. The “Artist” model of guitars is Alvarezes mid-priced guitars, their flagship line being the “Kazuo Yairi” guitars. If you still have your 5042 Alvarez I would hang onto it, I will keep mine until I pass it on to my nephew before I leave this world. If you find any more info I would really appreciate an update, I will keep you updated should I find any more info. Thanks n God bless

: I also have an Alvarez 5042 and cannot find any info. I bought (traded other instruments) mine new approx. 15-16 years ago (maybe longer). Here is what I have been able to determine about mine:
Made in Japan-Inspected by K Iaata??-Rosewood bridge-Koa wood back and sides-Laminated top (Spruce??)-No pickguard as purchased (installed by me later-"Hand Made" (on brace inside)-Alvarez logo on head-Alvarez name on back of head-Abalone inlay around sound hole-Amber color on tuners.
As I remember the asking price new was either $435 or $535 USA.
            Does this sound like yours?
            Hope this helps.

Hi I have a late sixties left handed model and often wondered the same myself. The left handers are a bit rarer than the right hanfders and the late sixties are not as popular as the earlier models with the smaller pickups which Paul used. I wouldnt part with yours for under a grand. Think of it as an investment.

Ill send you a picture ogf mine I,m not sure what year it is

    2. Re: 1969 Hofner violin bass
      Stuart

I used to play one of these!

This is not as valuable as the 1962/1963 hofner, which Paul McCartney made famous. Hofner made some changes to the bass over the years which affected its collectability, people want the 62/63 versions. It is actually still possible to buy these basses new, the 62/63 re-issue retails at around £1500, basic one around £800, and you can get pretty good copies for around £2-300 if you dont worry about the hofner badge..

Depending on condition, ie is it still playable (the necks warp), Do the electrics need replacing (they crackle with age) How many Dings/Scratches, has the body split, or ever been repaired, is there a hard case etc.

If its playable and you can get the action at the top end down below 1/4" without losing the octave, I’d guess its value at around £250-500.

I’d be interested in it for nostalgia if you wanted to part with it at the lower end of that range.

I have the F15 I was given in 1973 by my parents. It was my second guitar – the first was cheap and nasty. It still sounds crisp and clean. Easily played beginners guitar – my 8 year old daughter is now learning on it. It was imported by Fender from Harmony in Japan. Fender list on their reference site as being available from 1973 – 1981 for $170. Despite their good reputation and great playing qualities they haven’t appreciated in value like Starts and Tellies.
As mentioned by someone else hey did have enclosed tuning heads. If yours does not it may be a copy BUT fear not they had a nasty habit of working loose and were often replaced by owners in the 80’s for different design.
Enjoys its small bodied playing qualities for what it is – a good simple and easily played guitar – that’s what it was made for.

Purchased on EBAY a "Fender" F-15 w/ pearl inlays. I have been getting a lot of grief lately regarding it’s authenticity. I removed the front plate at the head stock to reveal the truss rod BUT…the tuners are not sealed at the rear of the head! I have been told that all Fenders of this vintage have sealed tuners. I understand that there were a lot of Indonesian copies made…is there a way to distinguish??? PS> inside of the body are the numbers 700373.

i bought an f-15 in nairobi, kenya, in about 1973. it cost 1300shillings, which was about $130 australian. i’ve been playing it pretty regularly since then and it’s still in good shape. still sounds as snappy as it always did. i’ve got to get it refretted though.

My dad gave me an F-15 he purchased in the early seventies when I was twelve. I have been teaching myself to play it for ten years now. It is nice to see others are enjoying the same instrument. Last night it broke. It was a wonderful guitar and I wish it was still functional.

    7. Re: Fender F-15
      matt

:hi,, my dad gave me his steel string f-15 that he bought in the ’70s. had to get the bridge glued down and replace the machine heads ($70) but it sounds great. everyone who picks it up reacts to it with pleasure.
F-15s both steel string and classical were produced in japan by harmony from 1969 to 1979. in 1973 they dropped the screws in the pickguard and went to a martin style ‘teardrop’ pickguard. also in ’72 the headstock got knotched.
that’s all i know and some of it may be wrong. they seem small. 3/4 sized?
anyway they have no real value collector-wise but are great for informal playing.

      Hi
I have had the Fender F15 for 13 years given to me from a family member who never really played it.What a great guitar for apartment jams or camp fires.
I do have a problem now with the 6 string key, seems to have come lose from the socket. The bridge has also cracked and I am on the search for a new one…..
The F-15 sounds really nice with a higher guage string ,I find a get a really nice lead sound from it, while playing with a second guitarist.Well it is nice to hear others also enjoy with well crafted instrument.

I have an F-15 I bought new in 1977 for about $120. It has a sticker on the headstock that says "Made in Japan". I have played it steady with almost no adjustment since 1977. I did have some fret work done on the 2nd fret a few years ago for a cost of about $20 at at local luthier. Other than that it has been a solid stage guitar, with a mid range tone and ok action up to about the 12th fret. The neck is still straight and the finish looks barely worn although it has been played almost daily for 25 years. Not a great guitar, but ok for jamming and the occasional playing out.

Let me tell you something. thats true whatever it cost whatever how old, it sound much better than newly made Fender Acoustic, Stratocoustic ones. if you can find or have one, compare with Stratocoustic at guitar center. Stratocoustic sucks.

      1. My new old F15

Hi there all Went to Guitar Center to buy a new guitar. They were having a Trade in your old instrument for cash day. This lady brought her F15 to trade and they wouldn’t take it because it has no serial number. I bought it from her there in the store because it is a fantastic guitar. She bought it in 73 new. Last year she had Guitar center tech lower the action and re work the neck new strings and a Road Runner hard shell case. I bought it all for $75. Her price. She walked out with a new Taylor and I got the deal of the day. I googled it in the store before I bought it. No serial number made it worth $179 without the case. However I believe in the future the fact that there isn’t a serial number could make them even more valuable… Seems most people bought them as a learning instrument and many put them away keeping them in excellent condition.

I am so pleased with this F15 that she kept tucked away in the case waiting for me to buy it for virtually nothing. It sounds fantastic and plays effortlessly. It is in mint condition and it is worth more than we can know at this moment. You wait and see!!!
