Fine and Rare Guitars

I buy and sell very fine classical and flamenco guitars. Torres, Santos, Esteso, Fleta, Hauser, Hernandez y Aguado, Bouchet, Smallman, Friederich and many others. I also import great student guitars from Spain. These represent great value. Before you buy, give me a try. All guitars can be sent on approval.

hey lorraine! I just recently got a minerva guitar from where i volunteer for free. I went home and researched it and found out that they are very old and were distributed by sears and eatons in the 1930’s. My guitar looks almost identical to what john posted. Hope that helps!

Go to http://www.accessguitar.com. They SUPPOSEDLY have at least one. I got to it through the "Inventory" page, but I didn’t see a price and I doubt that they actually have the instrument due to the stock photo. I emailed them twice and called once, but no contact has been made. I think I’d like one of these guitars. It’s too bad you can’t find one to try. Then again, where I live, you can’t find ANY archtops to try. In a town like Kansas City there’s anything BUT jazz guitars. Amazing, eh?

I would like to get $1800 for it. It is in perfect condition with only a few playing hrs on it. This guitar is part of a collection I have and I have no reason for selling other than down sizing. I have a hard case for it that I will include.

i have a suzuki nagoya, electro acoustic guitar. i swapped in a shop 3 years ago. it had a price tag of £330 and has a lovely rich sound.
all i know is that it was a direct rival for the current Martin models ( d45 or d28 io think ) not the usual cheaper versions that were created for the schools and classes in nagoya. buyers didnt really favour this,so the company stopped maikng them and went back to guitars. does anybody have any more info?

  4. |I have a Gibson Custom Shop Series Guitar Model Q-4000 can anybody tell me the value? It is an electric made of Koa Wood and is in very good condition around 20 years old

I have one I bought new in ’74. I have tried to find more information on this model but have not been able too either. Yamaha is of little help. I bought it from a retailer in Cincinnati. I have learned it was one of their best models at that time. Not hand made, but the next best thing. They retailed for around $1,000 as I recall.

I have just acquired a Minerva resonator guitar..besides this discussion thread I have been unable to find much online information, but there was one tantalizing tidbit…. I found a description of a patent application by Rudy Dopyera (of Dobro fame) from 1932 , for a resonator guitar system called ‘minerva’.

No further details are provided, and none of the local guitar experts in my neck of the woods have ever heard of the MInerva brand.

Hi all here, I am a musician and collector of stringed instruments here in New Zealand. If you have a minerva guitar, in particular a 4 string tenor, although you can’t find a value or any information, I can asure you, you are nuts if you get rid of it, thhere are very few playable ones around now and they play a big part in the advancement of musical instruments. I have a minerva, 4 string, I have been to many pro’s and nobody can give me what I am asking for, therefore, the question is answered. This guitar is may be an old shitta, but it is an item that any collector will struggle to get thier hands on. I have studied it for the past 2 years and have found jack sh***. If you have one, either hang on to it or auction it for a realistic price. I have a number of valuable guitars but the minerva seems to be the odd one out. You have a gold mine!

I’m probably the guy who contacted you, looking for a Minerva; they were made, I’m told, by the American Guitar Company, for Sears; they also made a cheaper model, also for Sears, called the Stella. My uncle bought a Minerva in the late ’30s/early 40 from Sears, and it has been irretrievably lost, so I’m trying to locate a replacement, as it has great sentimental value to me.

            — In 1936,my father was given (for his 16th birthday)a tobacco sunburst Minerva six string in a cardboard fitted case with a padded leather handle. His parents ordered it from the Eaton’s catalogue. It came from Toronto all the way to the Ottawa valley, and my Dad used to say he was very excited about this guitar. He never became a professional musician but could always pick and strum some plausible cowboy songs and Christmas tunes. He always enjoyed this guitar and was still playing it in his eighties. In the sixties, when I had delusions of being a folk singer, this Minerva was my first guitar. For the sake of more accurate tuning I replaced the tuners with modern chrome ones, but I still have the original brass ,steel and black bakelite ones. I can find no information on the guitar itself except the green white and gold Minerva decal. The Minerva has a crisp, bright tone, almost tinny. I cut down the bridge a bit to make it easier to play.I suppose this information doesn’t really help anyone, but that’s all I know.Naturally I have absolutely no intention of parting with this guitar.
            Best wishes.

i received a message from someone in canada about having
a minerva guitar. I own Minerva Music Center, and they
probably assumed…. oh well I do know they were manufactured
by the Hensel Instrument Company in Sweden, however, I have
no other information about them. I am thinking most of these
guitars were manufactured in the early to mid 1900’s.
If anyone has more information available please write me and
      fill me in.
      thanks,

      1. Minerva guitars were made in
        Scott

Minerva guitars were made in Toronto by C S Williams and Sons as was the sister model, the Arthur Hensel Artist. Williams was better known as a piano maker but they also built decent guitars from about 1896 to 1945. I have an S S Stewart parlor guitar that was a Williams’ build, the two companies exchanged instruments… Stewart made fine banjos and provided those to Williams who sold their guitars through catalogues and through the Bellevue School of Music in London, Ontario, Canada. The Stea back then BTW, is a much nicer instrument than the more common Harmony Stellas and They were made by the Oscar Schmidt company in New Jersey.

      2. I have a Minerva tube amp that seems to have a 1 10 in it , I have seen one acoustic electric in Ottawa a Few years back. Does anyone have information on the amp side of things?

        1. Minerva amp
          Scott

I have seen a Minerva amp recently, obviously a Keil build. Likely early to mid 1960s with a single speaker and controls on an angled panel on the back. Keil made amplifiers in Kitchener Ontario and R S Williams and Sons made Minerva guitars in Toronto so it makes sense that this was an ongoing convenient arrangement. I wouldn’t be able to tell you more without seeing the amp though.

      3. Minerva Arch Top
        Brian

My father bought a Minerva arch top I believe in 1942. I still have it although it does need repair. Unfortunately, when he went off to war he left it unstrung and the upper side split. The wood appears to be mahogany to me with tortoise shell plastic pick guard. Rose wood finger board. I learned to play guitar on it. When I got my hands on it at the age of 12 I unfortunately wanted a “better” case for it. The original was a cheap vinyl covered card board with a leather strap handle. The case was made with a sort of trap door in the end so you slid the guitar into the case peg head first. There was a metal latch on the “door” that kept this closed. Unfortunately, that case has gone missing. Originally, the guitar came with a multi coloured cord as its “strap”. One end fastened round a white plastic peg in the end of the guitar and the other was tied around the peg head. If memory serves the colours of the cord matched the colours of the inlay around the edge of the top of the guitar. There was a tassell on this end which hung down. Of course…this was not cool to me so I got rid of it. This guitar which still tunes up and plays easily today started me on a long love affair with the instrument. I have played in rock bands (still do) for many years. I also live in Canada.

I was wondering if you know much about the Gibson SG-Z. I was mainly going to ask what pick up it has in the bridge position, but i also would like to purchase one. please email me back. t

    thanks,

    1. the sg-z has a double humbucker in the bridge, it doesnt look like it because the humbucker is stacked on top of itself so it looks like its just a single coil, but its a humbucker, its a great guitar, i have one and i wouldnt trade it for anything else, definatly buy it

: : : I HAVE RECENTLY PURCHASED AN ACCOUSTIC FROM A LOCAL SECOND HAND SHOP, THIS IS THE ONLY IDENTIFYING MARK ON THE GUITAR, 1 G-101, THIS IS SITUATED IN THE USUAL PLACE IE. IN THE CENTRE OF THE GUITAR. I WAS INFORMED BY THE ASSISSTANT THAT IT WAS MADE IN POLAND. IT IS ALMOST CERTAINLY HAND BUILT AND QUITE OLD. CAN YOU HELP TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT IT? CHEERS.
: : Sir, I also have a G-101 guitar, and am perplexed by it. I have not been able to obtain any information about it. All I know is that mine doesn’t sound like any other guitar that I’ve ever heard.

I just came across one as well, purchased for $5 from a guy who found it out in his barn some years ago. Overall it’s in pretty sad shape, but remarkable in that it has only warped in the top and back (no splitting). I’ve been looking for some information that might prove helpful, and this thread is the only mention I’ve seen of the G-101 identifying stamp inside the soundhole.

I HAVE AN ACCOUSTIC GUITAR WITH THE SAME IDENTIFYING MARK ON THE GUITAR, 1 G-101, IT IS SITUATED IN THE SAME PLACE. THE MARK IS INSIDE THE BODY IN THE CENTRE OF THE GUITAR. MY DAD BOUGHT IT LONG AGO FOR MY MOTHER WHILE THEY WERE COURTING, HE DID NOT SEEM TO KNOW THAT MUCH ABOUT IT.

i have one too, it’s old, beat up, the head looks a little like a gibson but i doubt it is a gibson. on the back it has like a red-burst design and has 2 stickers on the neck, one says "steel reinforced neck" and the other says made in taiwan. and the g-101 in the hole.

In the 1950s, my mother taught me to play a Minerva which my uncle left with her in the 1940s; he asked to have it back in the 70s. Now, after his passing, none of his family knows where it went. I’d like to purchase one, if anyone has one for sale. [email protected]

I also own sunburt archtop Minerva guitar that was bought by my uncle in 1937. My aunt shot him in 1958, so getting detail is tough, but my Dad says it was a sears line guitar, top of thier line, (paid 33 bucks for it!). He said they also carried "stella guitars" as a cheaper model. Maybe thier related? I restored this one and it gots a deep bluesy tone. I would love to know more about this thing as it is very specail, to me.

Interested in selling it. My cousin has been trying to track one down for years and he is now late 60’s. Same sort of background, with an uncle having bought one from Sears back in the 30’s

Guitar is complete. Just had my Luthier put new binding on fret board , new strings, adjusted bridge ( not original) for intonation.
        Likely 1940’s circa .
With Case it’s gotta be worth $450.
