  1. Tele nut repair
    Steve Perdue

Does anyone know how I can repair,(not replace), the nut on my 70’s vintage tele custom? A fellow filed down the string grooves and I’d like to know if there is any way I can build them back up with some kind of filler and then refile them.

      Warren Callens

      Steve,

Epoxy will do the trick. Just fill and file and hopefully you will be patient and careful enough, but you would be better actually replacing. You’re talking about a lot more time and effort with filling, filing, etc.

My 1st guitar was a yellow solid body Californian Domino w/ the dark wood grain p/g. Got it at 12 years old in 1968. I wish, I wish, I wish I still had it. However in 4 days I’m having it tattooed on my arm along with the other 5 so far.

I have a Domino electric, my first, bought in 1967. It stills works but needs new tuning heads. I can’t find a supplier with the right stuff to fit the hole arrangement.
I have no idea who carries Domino products anymore. If you come up with something, please let me know, and vice versa, of course.

I have a Californian (2 pickups, three switch plate like a Jaguar) and am having some trouble figuring out the ‘ circuit switch soldering issue’, as one wire was loose when I opened it, but returning it to where I thought it should be did not solve the problem. There is ZERO sound….Went to the “Inside A Domino” section and was duly frustrated to find no pics of a correctly wired one. Loads of pictures of them though!
Can anyone post a circuit photo of this cool guitar??

I could not remove the knob. Any assistance welcomed.

      Nora,
I also have a legend and if I recall correctly, there are TWO set screws on the knob. You need to loosen BOTH of them in order to remove the volume/tone knob. Check the knob closely and see if you find another set screw.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I double checked the volume knob and also a separate tone knob and there is only one set screw on each. I did totally remove the set screw and the knob still appears to be firmly attached.

  5. string buzz and twang sound
    robert

Hi, I recently bought a Raven quilt top new and it has a floid rose set up and I am getting string buzz and a twangy sound when the e string is plucked. I tried all the usual ajustments such as raising the string height and ajusting the neck but its still these. also I am getting a out of tune problem when you move up the neck about 3 frets. Its an awsome looking guitar with a cool quilt top but it plays worse than a 50 dollar clunker. can you help. Thanks Robert

    1. Re: string buzz and twang sound
      Paul

for great tone, it sounds alot better if you raise action really high and buy the individual Ernie Ball strings 013,015,020,028,038, and 058, and tune down a half step to Eb I promise it sounds ace when you do that.
please do email me back and tell me how you are getting on

ok i bought a squire strat ( not the best guitar but its what i have )so any ways the sound of the guitar sux and i am woungering if its the bridge because its no the neck and my dumb bro messed with the screws on the bridge so i was wounder is there a right set up for the bridge?

    1. Re: stupid bridge
      TKachline

get a pair of bridge pivot screws and countersink the two end bridge screw holes till they fit over the screws. Discard the six original screws. You may have to drill the end screw holes because the pivot screws are larger than the originals. Better sustain and stays in tune better.

Has anyone of you experiences about changing the Floyd Rose on your guitar or making the existing one better? Hello Dave!

I used to work at Ovation. This equilizer is fairly easy to remove, first remove the slider buttons by pulling them off. Next, the screws are hidden underneath the volume eq label. Remove the label by carefully peeling it off. Use an exacto knife to get it started. Four screws hold the equilizer box to the guitar body. Hope this helps. You can email me at [email protected] if you have any other questions. Glad to help!

Just a follow-up comment regarding removing a volume/eq unit…I have a Custom Legend (about 1985) and to get to the screws holding in the unit, I had to remove the four little screws on the metal plate and the knobs off of eq and volume stems (volume knob had one set screw) and then gently pry-up the metal plate WITH the plastic frame. The frame and plate are one piece. Then I could get to the four screws holding the unit to the guitar. Hope this helps.

  10. value of guitar
    Doris Allen

I was given a guitar by a cousin whose husband died several years
ago–so it must date back to the 50’s or thereabouts. Does anyone
know the value of a guitar by Supertone (Sears), called "The Prep".

Also have a Baby Martin guitar dating back to about 1950. Maybe a
D-58. I’m not sure. Also, do you know the value of that.
    Thank you.

    1. Re: value of guitar

the Supertone name was changed to Silvertone in 1946 so you guitars are at least that old. The don’t seem to go for much more than 150$ on ebay unless they’re really nice.

  11. 2000 Ovation Legend
    Von Ehman

Has anyone out there any experience with reparing or replacing the 1/4 " phone jack on this guitar?

By visual inspection it looks a though the phone jack and the XLR jack are one assembly.

The 1/4" jack has developed an intermmittent open and will not make good contact with the phone plug so the sound keeps cutting out.

How hard is it to replace the phone jack on this instrument?

  12. Ovation cutting out when plugged in to Amp
    Jim Simoneau

I have earily model Ovation bought in the late 70’s. It is Amplified
has single volume control. The problem I have is that when it’s run
threw a sound system, it works fine, but at any given time it will lose 80% of it’s sound, and the only way I can make it come back to full is to pull the cord and plug it back in to the Guitar. Do you know what the problem could be.
    Thanks

    1. Re: Ovation cutting out when plugged in to Amp
      jaysen smith

if it is an active pickup system,(thus requiring a battery) it will supply a 9v phantom power signal thru the line into your amp. if it has this, change the battery first, if problem continues, you have bigger problems,
if there is no battery you need to have a preamp that will
      replicate that 9v battery power

  13. bridge lifting up on acoustic guitar

my alvarez artist has a pin bridge that is lifting slightly. due to the odd sculptural shape of my bridge i am wondering if the tiny little corners that are lifting up make any difference. should i be greatly concerned with this, and how can i fix it , if possible, without the aid of a technician?

  14. 12 string neck
    Ted Meador

I came across this 12 string yamaha acoustic. Yea, I was pretty exited myself! The guy said that he hadn’t played it in years and never told me how old it was. The problem I’m having is where the neck is connected to the body, due to the string tension ( I think ) it is coming off of the body. Uh-huh, pissed me off too! The only thing I want to know is the best way anybody knows to make it playable again. The action is way high, and the space between the neck and the body is approx. 1/32". Any help would be greatly appreciated from one guitar junkie to another.

      mike weeks

: Anyone know how to adjust the neck and/or set intonation on vintage
      : guitar (’62 Harmony archtop- mod. 1213)?

      Hi,
I just got done doing a repair on my 1213.
To do the intonation you just manually move the bridge. If the harmonic at the twelveth fret is lower in pitch than the fretted note at the twelveth fret, slide the bridge away from the neck.
As for the neck, they are non adjustable. Mine was cracked at the 14th fret, so I took the neck off and epoxyed it as straight as possible. There is still a little bend around the 4th or 5th fret. You would pretty much have to take the fingerboard off with some kind of steam hydrator and either install an adjustable truss rod or replace or repair the "steel reinforcement".

I have one and the only things you can set up is the nut and the bridge. You can take the nut off by usig a blowdryer to heat it and the glue will come lose then you pull it off, you can sand the bottom but don’t screw with the slotswhere the strings go. The bend in the neck can only be fixed by the pros, beause it has no truss rod

  18. Refinishing...
    Jimmy

I have a 1988 teal Fender HM Strat (a la Steve Howe) with a Floyd Rose Spyder locking tremolo system. Over the years, it’s been through a lot of wear and tear (Liquid Paper, velcro, cuts/dents, etc.), and I’ve been considering removing the old finish to expose the natural wood (a la Nuno Bettencourt).

Getting it professionally done is almost impossible without having the shop keep it for a few months, having it exchange hands a million times, or, of course, the expense. So…is there any way I could refinish it myself?

    1. Re: Not sure what guitar i have
      Chuck B

I just bought a Domino guitar at a pawn shop in Canton, Ohio. Paid $40.00 for it (not in working condition). I have since repaired it and value it at around $100.00 It is a red hollow body archtop with 3 single coil pickups. The headstock is a direct copy of the fender early strat. I expect that this would date it prior to Fender cracking down on the Japanese headstock copycats, early to mid sixties? The neck is excellent and the tone is typical jangly sixties.

  20. 24 fret neck difference SPECTOR guitar
    MLP

I aquired a 1989 kramer spector 6 string guitar import body with emg’s and an original floyd for next to nothing and it is brand new never been sold, it was old stock from when they went out of business, well I am in need of a neck, I know this is one of the imports, but it is solid maple I believe (weighs a ton) and it is mint . now I knoe the US models were neck through so I know this limits the neck availability, I believe they were all 24 fret necks, If anyone could help me out with this I would greatly appreciate it. Also, would there be any way of putting an aftermarket 22 fret neck on it or would the intonation go out the window??? I really would like to find a real spector bolt on neck if there are any of them still in existence!!!

    thanx again

I’ve got a spector 6 string electric guitar with fitter floyd rose trem and "superstrat" pickup config, and its a through neck with 24 frets on a rose wood finger board, I hope that helps.

  22. Strat repair
    Michael

I have a Roadhouse Stratocaster that has a problem with going out of tune: When I bend the G string, it goes low, and when I use the whammy bar the G string goes high. I took it to a repair shop and the guy switched out the nut, tuning key, and the bridge and it still didn’t work. He even put a Floyd Rose bridge on and it still does it, any suggestions?

      tom kachline

Make sure your G is as tight as you can get it on the tuning peg. Being the thickest plain string, it tends to be stiff. You could try tightening the springs until the bridge bottoms out. This will only allow the whammy to go down, but the guitar will stay in tune better, even if you break a string.

try using a slightly higher guage string or a different string brand(I suggest Elixir or Boomer)

I don’t suppose they are very valuable but at least they are made in Japan rather than Korea or where ever they make them nowadays.

: I have an old classic Domino Guitar. My question is if a guitar that old or brand would be worth fixing. I would say it would probably need all new electrical parts and chrome plate on the body of the guitar.

Would this guitar be Metalic Green in colour?
If not, then please read this.
I am looking for a Guitar that I made, while living in India, at about 1967/68. It was fashioned after the Domino-Californian shape. It is Metalic Green, with a White scratch board. The pickups are cream in colour. It has no markings (such as name, etc.) on it.
If any one should find this instrument, I would appreciate an email ([email protected]).
      Thank you.

  27. warped face.
    keith Oldham

I have anold acoustic with Martin style X bracing. The face is warped where the fretboard meets the body and around the sound hole. Is there any tips that you can give me to straighten this problem out. The guitar seems to have a great tone, but it is almost unpalyable as the warp in the face causes the neck to tilt towards the bridge. Any ides would be helpful Thanks.

      andrew boulware

I hve a Yamaha G-60A acoustic guitar. One of my buds stepped on the head and broke it clean in half.
Basically what I am needing to know is how you goabout taking the old neck off and replacing it. I have
an idea that you propably score around the edges and use some type of wedge real gently to seperate
it from the sound box, but I would like a little insight if possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  28. gotta mcartney look alike (kinda)
    ray

I found this old Paul McCartney look alike bass. You know with the violin shaped body? Any how, there are no markings what so ever on the bass that describes who its made from or where its made from. Also, its not in working order. I was wanting to try to restore it myself but have no idea where to begin. The bridge on it is missing. I believe that the bridge on it is one of those rock-a-billy type bridges like on a Gretch or Rickenbacker. The head on it is that carved wood that tries to make it appear like the wood is rolled up like on a violin or cello or something. It also has two humbuckers like you’ll find on a ’57 Les Paul. Who do I turn to for help?
