I’ve been playing one since I bought it new in ’74. Since it is a "grand concert" size guitar, the sound is mellower than other classicals that you might be familiar with. I have tried out several others but have stuck with this one.

I have had my Giannini since 1973,and it has served me well. As a professional musician, I have sometimes used it onstage, when I was playing a single or a duet. Although I generally either play bass and do vocals or just vocals,my Giannini was my favorite guitar to play. I have also written many songs with that guitar, and it has always been a pleasure to play. I really don’t know very much about it’s value either, but I do know that the Brazilian rosewood that it’s made from is extinct, or so I’ve been told. I would like to share any info about it with anyone interested, or learn more about it from someone else. Please e-mail me if you are likewise interested.

: Just decided to play again after like 15 years. Picked up a used AWN85 in beautiful condition. Don’t know anything about them. How old is is, how good is it? Has nice sound….wonder if my 60’s hippie sensiblities will resurface……[email protected]

              —————————————————

Good for you, Phyllis. Glad to hear you got a good one. Mine came in the mail the other day and was somewhat of a disappointment. Had a small crack in each side, a small one in the top, the bridge was lifting slightly and a transverse brace on the inside was cracked. I couldn’t get the d tuner to tune the string. I complained to the seller and he reduced the price substantially, rather than have me ship it back. (I ended up paying $50 for the guitar, but also $75 for shipping.) I was able to fix the tuner myself and put new strings on it. It sounds good to me, but I want to take it to a guitar store and compare it to others. I had a guitar tech at Buffalo Bros look at it, and he thought it wasn’t worth repairing, so I’m just going to play it till it don’t play no mo. I see why these guitars generally don’t get more than $400 used. The back and sides are laminated. The guitar tech told me it was funny, because the wood on the inside is better wood than what’s showing on the outside, which is Brazilian Amazon Rosewood (slightly different from but soncically equal to Brazilian Bahia Rosewood, the one that is now endangered and not being harvested.) The wood on the inside is East Indian Rosewood and a very high grade. It was cheaper back in 1974 when this guitar was made. The guitar tech said the top might also be laminated, but I’m not so sure about that. Regardless, the guitar sounds very nice with the extra set of unused, but old LaBella strings the seller sent with it. I’m going to put some very good strings on it soon.

How old is your guitar? Probably from the 70s, but I can’t tell. It should say just below the label. Mine has the black and gold label that says "Giannini, Made in Brazil" and then has a little sticker below it with the model number and the serial number, which is 09 1974, the month and year it was made, I’d wager. You can go to the Giannini website and click on downloads and it will show you several old catalogues that you can download and view. I believe they’ve got the ’76 catalogue and the ’78 catalogue. The 76 catalogue is in both English and Portuguese. Neither one lists the AWN 85, but they do list the AWN 86 Asturius, which is probably the same model but made with Brazilian bahia rosewood, the good stuff.

How good is it? Can’t tell. You have to take it to a guitar store and compare it to what they’ve got. My guitar has nice sustain, especially in the base strings. And I believe it projects well also. My guess is that these guitars are better than most that you can purchase new for under $1000. But then, each guitar is different.

My guitar also got that funky Brazilian vibe about it, i.e. the finish isn’t so great, it appears there is some magic marker or ink under the finish in a couple of places and I swear I can still see faint band saw marks on the fret board, which IS solid Brazilian Bahia Rosewood. I’m teaching myself Brazilian Jazz stuff now, so I find it to be perfect for what I’m up to. Jobim, Joao Gilberto, Laurindo Almeida, Luiz Bonfa, check them all out. Great music.

As for hippie sensibilities, I’m a veteran of Woodstock and I’m glad those days are over, although they were a "trip" weren’t they?

              Regards, …………..Doug Eaton

does anyone know anything about this brand and model of guitar. i bought it over25 years ago and would like to know something about it. any comments are apprecieated.. please e-mail me…thanks…Godspeed.. R

      1. Bought mine from a Guitar Center in Lombard for less than 200$. The value of these instruments is very low and based on my research they were mass produced by the 1000’s during the late 60’s and early 70′. During the folk song era these instruments were very popular and sold quickly due to the low cost. My AWN85 is from 1967 with a few minor chips but otherwise is completely solid. Brazilian rosewood with maple top. Both are laminated (an in my case, the inner wood is better than the outer wood.) The outer wood was basically a decorative veneer.

One point to mention, I was taking lessons from a person who has played classical for nearly 40 years (he has recorded, taught and played with a number of people over the last four decades so he is a very accomplished player.) Each time I would open the case and take it out, he would take it, tune it and play bits for Maleguena. ‘I love the way it sounds,’ was he quote every single time. Since it was such a ‘cheap’ guitar I asked about buying a better one (i.e. more expensive.) He smiled and said, ‘I doubt you can find one better.’ So, my little Brazilian lady is mellow and the D can buzz but her voice improves with age and I would not sell her for anything. I have learned that by using mid tension strings that I get a sound that I prefer and with time I am learning to soften the buzz (just takes a little firmer grip.)

Someday these instruments will be worth something but not in my lifetime. So I am learning each day and someday hope to pass it along to a grandchild.

      2. Giannini Clasical Guitar AWN 85 SER 1973
        Benny Browne

I recently bought one of these. It is in very good condition and has enormous amount of resonance. Trouble is that the A string on fret 9 has a shocking buzz. Anyone had this problem and if so how has it been fixed?

      3. i bought my 85 AWN serial no. 08 1974 in 1974. I seemed to remember I paid something like £48 for it , can`t swear by that though and a hefty discount I think might have been involved.
I have used it for recoding, live performances and generally it has travelled around with me, “trains & boats & planes”, It has spent nights on beaches I had to leave it behind in the Channel Islands once it was a choice of my Strat or my Giannini on the plane, not both, I rescued it some weeks later. So it is now quite well worn “war wounds” all over but by no means worn out. The machine heads I replaced about 20 years ago, and I also have removed the laquer finish on the neck it plays better without it, Concerning the mellow tone, I like many others conquer this by using Pro-Arte high or even extra high tension strings. I won`t part with it even though I have other classicals, this one is like an old friend to me that has never let me down. But it would be interesting to know it`s saleable value.

    Bria Sanders

My father gave me his old guitar recently. It is a Giannini 12-string w/ an unusual shape. The modle # is AWS12. He bought it in the early 70’s from a friend. All of my friends agree that it is the best sounding 12-string they’ve ever heard. Many people want to buy it from me b/c of its unique appearance and wonderful sound. I believe it is made from Brizilan Rosewood. If you can help me w/ some info., please do. Thanks, Brian [email protected]

I have a Giannini AWBN5, ser # 8/73. I purchased it in 1973 for $140, (which I think was a good amount of money for a guitar at that time). I am trying to find out what it is worth now. Does anybody know? Is anyone interested in buying it? I just don’t play it anymore. It is a 6-string classical, in beautiful shape, with good sound.

I spotted a guitar sitting on the Curb, to go out with the trash, when I went out for my morning paper. I woke up fast after looking in the hole and noticed Made in Brazil. Ive been in the import/export biz for years and know the Brazilian woods are protected by treaty so they can only be found in older, vintage instruments such as the Giannini. I took in the guitar which needed a good cleaning, new tuning machines and strings. Mine is a 901A Serial No 1158 from 2/69. The original tuning machines appear to be on a silver chassis with Mother of Pearl knobs. Anyone else notice that?

: What do you know about the history of this guitar

I have a Giannini Classical Guitar that was given to me as a birthday present for my 19th birthday (I am now 54). It’s an acoustic/classic and I have carried it everywhere with me all over the world. It has a beuriful sound. Itwas made in Brazil, Model #6, Serial #19818 and was made 01/66. It states Tranqillo Giannini s.a.

I am a self taught guitar player and only play by ear and have loved this instrument. As I have developed an early movement disorder (very early MS) I am unable to play it and would like to know if it is worth anything to help me pay some of my medical bills. It is a beautiful guitar and I hate to part with it, but sometimes we have to do what we have to do.

I look forward to hearing from you.

      Most sincerely,

        1. A massive long shot
          Wlevers

This is one hell of a long shot but I just came across this thread 17 years after it was posted. I was just 8 years old at the time!
Linda, if you receive this message I hope you are doing okay, I know that MS is just horrible in the way it affects day to day life and if you do read this then my primary concern is that you’re alive and well (as much as you can be).

Of course, I came across this thread for a reason. I am from England, I live in Cornwall, which is south-west, right out surrounded by the Atlantic. Giannini guitars are a bit of a rarity over here. They don’t cost much if you do find one, I came across someone selling a classical guitar last year for £120 which is around $170, and as it looked good condition and was from Brazil (the home of Bossa Nova) I snapped it up immediately.
I have come to love it very much, there is something about it which really resonates with me and it is a Giannini Tranquillo.
What is most curious is that mine is the 02/68, model no 6.

If there is any chance you get this message, and then furthermore any possibility that you still have the guitar, or have a name or any information on who you sold it to, then please get in touch with me. I haven’t been able to find any other model no. 6 for sale anywhere, and I would love to have a second, and especially the 01/68 to my 02/68. I would happily pay more than it is worth, especially given the sentimental value to you and the fact that you only wanted to sell it due to your MS, it’s very sad.
Even if you read this and no longer have it and have no further information then I wish you all the best.

And for anyone else reading this, if you know this guitars whereabouts, let me know, my email is: [email protected]
I would also potentially be interested in any other model no. 6 Gionnini Tranquillo Guitars out there. But of course, the no. 1 would be amazing.

I think the Model GN80’s were made in the 70’s and I think their price at that time was around $109.00. I just saw one in a Bloomington Pawn Shop for $119.00. It was in pretty good shape with just a little checking and a few minor scratches.

I have a model AWN70 serial # 08-1974 in excellent condition. My wife purchased it for me in 1974 and I never played it. Just the other day my daughter showed interest and in having it strung and tuned, the owner of the store was very impressed with it being a Giannini. The numbers he threw around as to the price of a Giannini makes me want to know what value this guitar really has. My daughter will respect and care for it, but she is on 15 years old, and being 15 she is going to handle it as a 15 year old would.

Sorry for the long story, but if anyone help me understand the value of the guitar it would be appreciated greatly.

I have an AWS 740 model Giannini guitar which I bought 26 years ago when I was 15. I have only ever seen one other Giannini guitar in a guitar shop since. Does anyone have any ideas of what its value might be (its in ‘new’ condition)? Or similarly, any information at all on this guitar. Many thanks

I have a Giannini GS570, serial 1622 that I bought from a friend who had bought it at a garage sale. When I got the guitar it was in bad shape…the finish is damaged…lots of cracks and the bridge was cracked and about to split but I loved the sound and feel, so I bought it and took it to a repair shop. It is now my favorite guitar…stays in tune, sounds amazing, is impervious to weather changes. Every person that plays this guitar falls in love with it. The bizarre thing is that no one can tell me what it’s worth…I have asked several guitar shop owners and I’ve scoured the internet. I hope you find out how much yours is worth so I’ll have an idea about mine.

I own a 1976 12 string Giannini Cravoila. Same unusual
shape-great for sittng down while playing. From what I’ve read,
the Craviola is a nylon-string. Anyone have info on that?
My guitar has standard steel tuners, but I’m tempted to try
nylons on the first three strings. Just had the neck and bridge
glued-some cracking, but now plays ok, although some bridge buzz
due to lowered action, I suppose.

: What do you know about the history of this guitar

I know that Brazillian classical guitars are noted for their unusual sound. I don’t know if any of you remember the famous guitar duo from Brazil who toured the world as "Indios Trabajaras" They gave Chet Atkns one of their guitars. Their guitars had a beautifull singing treble, and although they dressed as Brazillian indians, they were both well trained guitarists.

I don’t know if this has anything to do with Giannini, but I just bought Giannini a classical by mail. The pictures show a ordinary looking classical guitar with odd looking wood for the top. The rosette is really good looking in a tastefull Spanish style. The inside says 1900. As soon as I get my hands on it I will update this. Meanwhile, like the rest of you, I would like to find out more concerning this mysterius instrument. Hope I didn’t bore everyone. Ray Provence

Have you been able to get a valuation of your instrument? Recently, I was gifted a Giannini guitar made in September 1965 that sounds very similar to yours in that it has mother-of-pearl inlay around the sound hole. It is also a No. 4 model, about which I have been able to find nothing on the Internet.

Hi, the translation for the label inside your guitar is
        Giannini – Student series
        Tranquillo Giannini Inc. Strings industry
        made in brazil
The guitar you describes, with the signature and 1900, is a recent one, medium-priced student guitar, with less than 10 years old. 1900 was when Giannini started in business, and that is a comemorative issue.

In the early 1970’s I purchased a Tranquillo Craviola Giannini SA Brazillian 12 String Guitar, Model #812, Serial Number 10/068. I am assuming it must have been built sometime in the 1960’s. . . Perhaps 1968. Other information on this guitar’s inside label reads:

Hello there. I cant help you on your question but Id like to post a question myself. I am also curious about the worth of a guitar I have when it was first made. Of course its nothing the same as it was. I found this trashed guitar in a attic of an old garage. No strings, top pulled away from the sides, UGLY color (I later discovered it was repainted) not worth much more than hanging on a wall. Being a guitarist and seeing the wear patterns deep in the fret board, (not to mention worn to wood where its rests on your leg) I had an idea of the style of music played on it. This poor little guitar had a past life of volumes! I took compassion on it and fixed it up just to be playable. Something I could take camping and not worry about getting scratched. It sounds so good I recently stripped it and found what I think is a Imbuia wood top and brazilian rosewood sides and bottom. Its Model No. 2 and Serial No. 10453 and has a date below that (which I assume to be Manufacture date) is 9/65. Incedentaly, I was born 6/65 so this has further indeared it to me. If anyone has any input to enlighten me I would be forever gratefull. Thanks, your fellow musician, Greg.

Hi It has been a wile since this post. I have a Giannini gs240 It was bought for me in 1969 new. It was my first guitar and I still play it to day. Made of mahogany with a spruce top and rose wood fret board it still sounds as good to day as it did way back when my mother bought it. It has aged well. as for the worth I know my mother paid $110.00 with the case. as for what it would be worth to day i have no idea. I know I would never sell mine, it means too much to me first guitar and all roots. I have had many offers, but this one will be passed down.

I am looking at buying a Giannini Guitar it says Tranquillo and it is natural wood that is greenish red. I am wondering if 165.00 is a good price for this 1967 guitar. It also looks like the bridge has been repaired. Other than that I dont know because this would be the only guitar I have ever purchased. It has the original pieces of paper on the inside that say Laolga414, S. Paulo Brazil
              Model no. 4 Serial no. 33269 then 6/ 67

I also own a ’74 Giannini that I purchased from a little music shop in Pennsylvania. I’ve seen lots of imitations, but very few of the real thing. It’s has a tear-drop with a single cut-away design. I don’t know if there are any other designs available. The wood is beautiful – light front with dark sides and dark mirror image back wood split in the middle. I tried to look up any information in the encyclopedias we have in our computer system, but nothing available. I’m in the process of seeking info on the internet. If I find anything I will update this.

I recently stripped it because it had been repainted (bad, bad condition when I found her, top separating from sides. Abandoned for junk in the attic of an old garage) To my suprise it has what I believe to be a Imbuia wood top and Brazilian Rosewood side and back. Its like a new guitar now, and a favorite of my collection. Dont know much on backgroung though. Let me know if you learn anything about our guitars. Play on, brother! Greg

I have a 1973. The only thing I heard about this brand of Guitar is that there was an embargo on them at one time because of the wood they were using was from a rare wood. They continued shipping to the US after the changed woods. That was info from a Music Dealer. He also spoke of models that had murals on the back of the body. Mine has a slit line on the back but no mural.

I too own a Giannini. A Craviola to be exact. All I know is that they have been hand made in Brazil since 1900. All the ones I’ve seen have somewhat the same body style. Egg shaped at the top and on the lap side cut away and notched for the leg. I hope this is somewhat helpful.

This guitar was a gift given to me in the Spring of 1973. I’ve been the only owner of this guitar and it was my first guitar. It’s a small guitar with a fairly decent sound. I would like to know what year this guitar was made, and find out some info on it’s value ,etc. I have seen giannini’s home page, but can’t find any info on this model. I recently purchased it, and gave it to my daughter. I have seen two on Ebay that sold for $60, and$90, but I saw someone in Maryland, or somewhere, wanting $5,500. Is that crazy, or is that legitimate? Sure would like to know.

        1. Giannini GN-50
          Piensis

I believe production of the GN-50 started in 1965. Initially, the exact production date was typed manually on the label that was glued inside the guitar. Apart from that, the design of the label changed a few times during the period the GN-50 was manufactured. You can see some different labels at http://www.guitar-museum.com/model.php?ID=5247.
If the label inside your guitar mentions the address 184 Rua Carlos Weber, Sao Paulo, it means that it was made in or after 1970. In that year, Giannini moved its production facilities to that address (http://www.giannini.com.br/eng1/timeline.asp).
I own several Giannini guitars (and a lot of other guitars as well), but the GN-50 is by far my favorite guitar. It is quite small but still has plenty of volume, and the sound … well, it sings! and it plays incredibly well. My GN-50 was made on 19 Oct 1971, according to the label. I paid 75 euros for it, but I wouldn’t sell it for ten times that amount, no way! It is just an amazing guitar.

Giannini guitars are still substantially under valued. I am referring to vintage from ’60’s , 70’s and some of the new high-end classical guitars. The woods used are typically good tonal woods, and the construction is solid. I have several of them, and in my estimation, these guitars will triple in value in the next few years. Good tonal woods are becoming increasingly more difficult to find and purchase. Supply of wood is low, restricted, and politically a problem. I think a guitar such as the classical GN 50 is worth between $180–$350, and the GN 60 between $300–$600 (’60’ and ’70’s vintage). These are far better than any cheaply made new inexpensive guitar that is made of “nato” wood (something somewhat better than ply wood), or some other tone-deaf wood. A musical instrument needs to sound good, otherwise it becomes something like another useless gadget. Go for it!

      10. Giannini Classical Nylon String, 1968?
        Moriah

        Hello everyone,
I am trying to find some information regarding a guitar that belonged to first my mother’s mother, then my mother, and myself for over ten years now. I learned to play classical style on this instrument, but it is in need of some love. It is a Giannini Classical Guitar, made in Brazil and dated 12/68. The sticker says: “Giannini Guitars / Tranquillo Giannini s.a. / Brazil 12/68 / Model 2/a / Serial #11775. It is 3/4 size. Does anyone have any interesting or clarifying information on this model? Online info is scarce, and being 44 years old and not the most valuable chunk of lumber in all creation, interest is hard to come by at the usual sources.
        All my best,
        Moriah
