  3. Alvarez Model 5058 Nine String Guitar
    Will Hockenberry

I bot this guitar on e-Bay about four years ago for re-sale.
When I received it I fell in love with it and I play it almost daily. I would welcome any info about this fabulous instrument, It seems to have a very limited history and a rather secret one. I would also enjoy communicating with other owners. My e-mail is [email protected] Thanks for any interest.

When my Father passed, I came in possession of an Alvarez 9 string MDL# 5058.
I love playing it! It has a great sound! I have asked many local Music Shops if they have heard of this and the reply I keep getting is, “I have never heard of it.” I was wondering what the going price for this guitar is?

My mother bought this model guitar in Little Rock, Arkansas at Boyd’s music in the early 80’s. Would be too strange if this is the guitar you’re talkinf about. I play it now, and the sound is fantastic. Seems like everyone who plays it has something good to say about it. A professional musician who stayed with my family while in town even borrowed it to play a show. Anyway, I have the sales receipt from the purchase and it was sold for 625$ back then.

Anyone got anything to say about the YC-200?
I’ve had mine for a few years but havn’t played it a lot. Took it out of the case the other day, tuned it up and it still sounds great. But, there doesn’t seem to be much info on the web.

Not much information indeed guys. I own a YC 200 from 1976. All massive wood, massive sound & brilliant balance. Higher tones sound like little bells. It’s not for sale & I’ve never seen a second one in Holland. But I saw some YC100’s. Owners wouldn’t sell either. About the Alvarez Yairi CY200: it’s not the same guitar though specifications are the same as far as I remember. The YC200 is built by K. Yairi, I guess before the merge or so. Price new was 2500 dutch guilders, so around 1200 Euro.
        Greetings,

The earlier made YC200 is not the same as the one made later on, which is actually (if an Alvarez Yairi CY200) if made for sale in Japan (K. Yairi) it would be YC200 model also, just not the same as the one made in the 1970’s and 1980’s.

        1. K.Yairi YC200 Classical Guitar
          John Sudjana

I bought the guitar when I started learning classical guitar in the late 70’s. It was recommended by a guitar teacher at the local conservatorium of music. He owned one. I paid AUD$400 at that time.
It was a beautiful looking guitar. Great craftmanship. Strangely though, the top is made from Solid Cypress, the wood normally used for the back and side of flamenco guitar. I don’t find any other makers doing this. Also it has a rather thick coating of (plastic) varnish. Unfortunately, the bridge became warped and unglued one day.
The sound of this guitar is ok. Not particularly brilliant or sweet. I think that should be expected from the cypress top. I sold this guitar after a damage was done by a sloppy repairer who was fixing the detached bridge. I was actually very upset with what happened.
As a replacement I got myself an ASTURIAS, which I’m still keeping to this day. Asturias has very sweet treble, without over powering bass. The intensity of the notes is almost the same everywhere along the fingerboard up to about the 15th fret. It is a guitar that you get attached to.

I own an amazing 1974 K Yairi classical, purchased 1985, it sounds really great, action is very low with no buzz, just beautiful. The best bell like tone from the basses, and balanced trebles. YouTube my demo playing classical gas, Doug Heperi, and see what I mean. I have never seen another one like mine, truely the best, and I own a few. Am a fan of Older Yairi guitars, they deserve more credit , when I find them, I buy them.

Mine is in bad condition (lots of dings) and I had it appraised at $300.00. It sounds much better than most $800.00 guitars out there now, but it appears that the old Alvarez line (5023s etc.) aren’t drawing much more than $200.00 in the used guitar market right now.

I own it. The Model 5023 sells for $100 or less in Tucson AZ. A good travel guitar but not a Pro instrument. It has a smaller body and not that loud. Tone fair, mostly mid to high, not much bass. But I have banged it around camping and it has quality construction. I like the small fast neck too. Not a bad little guitar for the money.

  14. Alvarez Acoustic model #5023 -year?
    Steve

I inherited an alvarez m#5023 from my grandfather before he died. It’s not for sale, so I don’t care about what it’s worth. I’m curious to find out the year it was made.
http://www.alvarezgtr.com says the 1’st two numbers are relate to the year of the emporer so 50 would be 1975 (on their chart). the 2nd two numbers relate to the month of production. (so what does that mean for 23?) So, I’m not sure if I’m looking at this correctly.
If anyone knows the year this was made I’d appreciate it.

      Steve,
I have an Alvarez #5023 that my father bought for me brand new when I was a teenager. It has a date stamp in it 1-10-75. It is a great sounding and playing guitar. I don’t know what their worth, but I often play it instead of my Taylor 810ce. Maybe it’s 30+ years of seasoning, but it does sound remarkably warm.
      Dave

        MessengerBoy

I’ve got a 5023 that my parents bought me for my high school graduation in 1976. I think was made in ’75 or ’76. It is still my main instrument. As others have said, these guitars age amazingly well. Mine has also been played quite a bit by me and my two sons. It sounds and plays like many fine guitars that are sell for three or four times the price that I could sell this instrument for. I’ve had some work done over the years. I replaced the tuners, and had some work done on the bridge. I always hated the floating metal bridge, so I had someone fill it in with wood and replace the saddle. It’s really made the guitar sound much better and eliminated some fred buzz I was getting. I’ve also had a few frets replaced, but after 30 years of extensive playing, I guess that’s to be expected. I would never get rid of this guitar, even if I ever get that vingtage Lowden I’d love to have someday.

I started taking guitar lessons in 1977 and the Alvarez #5023 was my first guitar. In fact, I’ve bought three guitars since then, but I keep coming back to my acoustic. I’ve had some work done over the years, in particular, have had the action lowered a couple of times. It’s been a great guitar and when freshly strung, sounds immaculate. I think my Dad paid about $175 or $275 for it in 1977. Don’t know the present value, but when I go to Samuel Music, their acoustics sound and feel like crap compared to the Alvarez. So, my non-professional opionion is that they would go for $500-$600 in this day and age. Hope that helps.

: I inherited an alvarez m#5023 from my grandfather before he died. It’s not for sale, so I don’t care about what it’s worth. I’m curious to find out the year it was made.
: http://www.alvarezgtr.com says the 1’st two numbers are relate to the year of the emporer so 50 would be 1975 (on their chart). the 2nd two numbers relate to the month of production. (so what does that mean for 23?) So, I’m not sure if I’m looking at this correctly.
: If anyone knows the year this was made I’d appreciate it.

-Hey Steve, I have an Alvarez m#5023 as well. It has the indian print around the soundhole. A truly great guitar.
My dad bought it back in 1973/74. I don’t know the year but I have also been looking around for info on this guitar.

I too have a alvarez dove! It was purcahased in France new It was bought for my son in law at the age of 10. He wasnt interested and it was stored in closet for 28 years in original case. it has amazing sound and is in excellent condition. I have owned it 3 years and have rarely played it. Any interest in buying??
      Thanks Steve

Debra, I hope that you get this response and my info might be of use. The story about Gibson sueing Alvarez over this model is true as far as I can tell. I, also have a Alvarez Dove (model 5024) that I purchased new in 1970. I think that I paid somewhere around $250 for it at that time. I have three other acoustics – a ’72 Martin D18, a ’76 Martin D35 and a ’69 Gibson Humming Bird. I love them all but I have to say that my favorite is the Dove. I bought it to save my Hummingbird from the destruction of the road so to speak. Although the guitar is not "mint" any more, I have kept it in really nice condition. Just a couple of minor dings but in great shape considering the use that it has seen. Anyhow, I have had the guitar appraised numberous times through the years for insurance updates and just had it reappraised two months ago and now have it insured for $1,500. I did have the tuners replaced in ’72 or ’73 with Grover Imperials. It just wouldn’t stay tuned when playing in humid conditions and we played in a lot of outdoor venues during the summer months. I just loved the way that it sounds so changing the tuners was my only option if I wanted to keep playing the guitar. Today I wish that I would have kept the guitar "origional" as I was told that it would be worth an additional $400 to $500. Who would have thought that any guitar made in Japan in those days would be worth that kind of money? Oh! there was one on ebay a month or so ago with several pictures – mid ’70s, average condition, asking $1000 with a then current bid of $850. – for what it is worth – – –

I hope that you love and enjoy playing your Dove as much as I do mine.

      [email protected]

P.S. I believe that when you were told that your guitar has a solid back, what was meant was that it has a 1 piece back (no joints between boards). As quality wood has gotten harder and harder to find and afford, many, if not most, guitars are being constructed with multi piece backs. Nothing wrong with that but I think that a 1 piece back is unsurpassed both for beauty and sound. Don’t you just love how dark and rich looking the spruce top has gotten? Looks so nice with the deep red stain on the sides. Sorry, sometimes I get carried away when talking about my baby.

I have been searching extensively for a photo and/or information about an Alvarez guitar I own. It was given to me in 1977. I was told it is an Alvarez Dove — has a pearl dove in the pick guard and pearl inlay in the neck. I was also told that is has a solid back (don’t really know what that means). Can anyone give me the hisory on this guitar or tell me where I can find information on it and a current value? I am running into dead ends. The only thing I found was a small piece about this possibly being a replica for a Gibson Dove and that Gibson sued Alvarez over this guitar…but again, no photos, no other info.

      1. Alvarez Dove 5025 LOW serial number
        Randy

I also own an Alvarez Dove 5025, mine has a serial number of 12. I still have the original bill of sale from when my Dad bought it in the 60’s. It has always been an amazing guitar, one I grew up with and learned to play on.

      2. I have the rarest of all Alvarez Dove guitars FOR SALE
        Kenneth Gerber

I don’t see where you can post pictures, but I have one of the first,if not the first ever made by Alvarez.
Check this out. The model number is 5025 NOT 2024 and the serial is 3094 with NO ZEROS before it.
I am waiting to hear back from Alvarez.
I took it to two independent Japanese Alvarez specialists and both agreed, rarest they had ever seen.
This is why it may be the prototype.
If you took a Alvarez 5025 and put a Dove bridge ( with Tune O Matic ) and carved bridge with abalone inlays and put a Dove pickguard and the paralell inlays on fingerboard,it would be a Dove.
This is all original except I put Klusen tuners on it.
The wood is to die for.Spruce top and MATCHING BARZILIAN ROSEWOOD BACK AND SIDES …
Finish is high gloss, better than the Gibson’s.
I’m asking $2500. as I doubt youll see another like this.
I have a lot of pictures if interested. I will accept and REASONABLE OFFER.

I just happened on this site. I bought an Alvarez 5025 in 1969 for a practice guitar. I’m sure I paid $129.95 at Whittaker Music in Long Beach, Ca. I’ve never really researched it as I thought of it as just an old practice guitar. I just checked the Serial Number and it is #198. I’m not planning on selling it but this is just a FYI . . .

hi guys .. this must be the place to go if you have a yairi .. well i just got one .. i had or still have a guild d25 that i’ve been playin for close to 30 years but i really like this yairi .. it’s a dy73cs .. i know the cs stands for cherry sunburst but it’s really closer to a tobaco or an iced tea burst .. not that bright red you see on lesters .. and it has abalone all around .. i have 3 guitar books and none of em even mention it so i’m assumin it’s quite rare .. i tried goin to arvarez yari . com but they only have current models and this sucker was made in 82 .. my question is first off does anyone know what this is worth ?? and what it’s the closest to of the current or other yairi models ?? i’d say it’s a spruce top with mahogony back and sides with an ebony fingerboard with binding on the neck .. this one has a pickup under the bridge and i’m wonderin if it’s stock or it’s an add on .. it has 2 knobs one for volume and one for tone up towards the neck on the upper bout .. no battery compartment or
battery and the jack is built into the endpin .. and gold tuners .. i also have an old american made applause with an aluminum neck that is goofy as hell but i love it and a gibson hummingbird thats really nice too .. but my last question is .. are all yairi’s this nice ?? or did i just get a good one ?? cause if they are i’m a believer now for sure .. anyone else have or know about this model?? tell me anything you can .. thanks ?? al..

Hello, I bought my Yairi DY73CS back in 1985 it is a 1983 model it was new when I bought it, I traded in two other guitars and money to boot. The guitar listed for $900.00 I sent mine back to St. Louis Music and had a factory pickup put in it. It was called a natural responce pickup. sounds like that is what you have. Mine came back with a volume and tone control. Not a preamp model. I have since changed mine to a preamp… This guitar has only got better with age for it;s sound…. Try a set of Elixer strings.. They are without a doubt THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        Larry

I bought one used for $350. A STEAL! Played it and had to have it. Same construction, but no controls; just the pickup under the bridge. this one was an 85. It’s my understanding these are the early handmade models by Yari. Everyone that plays it loves it. The newer ones aren’t the same. For a while I played a newer one a friend had-no comparison.
It was one of those "picked it up and knew I had to have it" deals. I have a Rickenbacker that was like that too. Go into debt if you have to but by it when it speaks to you.

I’ve 3 of these; one I got autographed by a now deceased favorite player of mine… the others I got in the past 5 or 6 years. One I bought for 300, the other for about 400. They were made with two different bridges; a traditional style, and the later Alvarez design. All mine have built-in pickups, so I think that was probably a stock feature.

        1. Alvarez Festival Model 5029
          Mr. Dub

I just bought one. Came with new strings of unknown origin and a Lawrence sound hole pickup. Sounds different than other guitars. Not as loud and crisp as many are. Very “musical” tone. I don’t know how else to describe it. The strings almost chime the chords, but without any tinniness. Bottom strings have smooth sustain better than my Taylor and Martin. The neck feels really good and the action is light on this solidly built guitar. Lightweight, yet feels tough. The inlayed abalone? logo is well done, but there are what look like gouges in the headstock and part of lower fingerboard. Nothing that I feel with playing it, but looking closely you can see them. It’s almost like it was intentionally distressed before finishing. Oh, the finish looks like it was done recently. I don’t know, it’s just feels fresh, but maybe it’s the original shiny finish.
Anyway, I just got it a couple hours ago and haven’t done much with it yet. I’m curious about how it came to be an Alvarez Festival model made from Ash tree wood.

Strangely, this particular model is missing from the online Bluebook listings. The DY77N is listed, but it is a different model with bound headstock, CD brigde, etc. and was only manufactred form 1991 to 1995. I’m going to drom the bluebook folks a line a let them know they left out a model that they really shouldn’t have missed.

As far as dating the guitars, some of the Yairis (such as yours) have a year stamped on the label pasted on the inside back of the guitar. That only gives you the year of manufacture. You can narrow it down to the year and the month using the other number that is stamped on the neck block inside the guitar. The first two digits (usually) is the year, the next two is the month. It relates to the Year of the Emperor, which is how meany years the Emperor has been in power at that time. So, the first series would begin in 1925 and end in 1988 for a total of 63 years. That would mean that a guitar manufactured in 1975 would have a first two digits of 50. If the neck block number was 5004xxxx, that guitar was made in April of 1975. Beginning in 1989 (New Emperor), the dating began again with 1. For guitars manufactured in 2000, the first two digits are 12. I’m not sure what has happened now, because I have a DY91 that was made in January of 2005, and it cannot be dated by the numbers on the neck block. I’m going to have to assume that Alvarez Yairi has adopted a new method of numbering their guitars, since to my knowledge, Akihito is still in power in Japan. That will be another question for the Bluebook folks.

I just found my old Alvarez 5014 guiter in its case in the basement. Given to me and purchased new in 1973, I believe it said. Hardly been played-it’s like brand new. Sat in the case all of these years. Any worth to it and can anyone tell me about it? Thanks!

I also have an Alvarez 5014. It’s dated 5/7/71, serial number 0970, but that number is crossed out, and underneath, written in pencil is "1035"

It was given to me as a present because the previous owner found it in her basement and wanted to clean house. I don’t know anything else about it either

wow, is this really a vintage? I bought a guitar at a garage sale in Germany for about $50, and it’s an Alvarez 5014….it was played regularly by it’s previous owner, and so it shows obvious signs of love…but it’s in excellent playing condition…it’s my regular now. I’d love to find out more about it!

My 5014 was given to me by my uncle who claims to have bought it in the late sixties, it was kept in the closet for about twenty years and was still in tune when he gave it to me. It’s close to mint condition and sounds better than any acoustic I’ve ever played in my 15 years of playing. I have no Idea what it’s worth if anybody does please let me know. thanks

The Man who saved my life is researching Lowden and Avalon 12 strings. Any information about them, and where they might be found in either the Colorado, NYC or New England areas would be greatly appreciated. He specifically wants to know if they have laminate necks, split saddles, how old they are, and what they might cost.

    Hoping,

I have an Alvarez 12 string acoustic electric I bought in 1993. I’m trying to determine the model. The sticker in the sound hole says it is an Artist Series. The sticker says the model number is 508812 and the serial number is 49161. Anyone have any idea what model it is? I am guessing that it is an AD60SC12 but I can’t find that model anywhere on the web.??? Thanks

Sounds like a AJ60S12 (Artist Series) with on-board electronics either a 500T or 600T series. Yes?

a friend of mine had one of these, a beautiful sound – tuning is standard on this instrument

        g – octaves
b – string is just doubled (same gauge)
        e – same as above

if you’d ever think of selling this, please keep me in mind!!!

          Brent Anthonisen

It’s an interesting novelty, but they’re very difficult to maintain. The design of the headstock (three tuning pegs on the top side, six pegs on the bottom for righthanded players) meant that the necks tended to twist due to the uneven pressure from the extra strings. It was one of the reasons they stopped making ’em.

          1. neck twist
            Anonymous

I have one that is proably 25-30 years old and has no twist at all. The difference in pull on the two sides of the neck is very slight as the treble strings have much less pull per string than the bass strings. Mine is rock solid. I don’t know where you got your info, and really wonder if you’ve ever owned one. They quit making them due to low sales. Most people don’t understand them. I use mine for songs that have a strong bass line combined with sparkling treble sweeps and cross picking. The punch of a six and the sparkle of a twelve!

            1. I have owned one of these
              Matt

I have owned one of these for over 25 years and use it as my main acoustic guitar. I actually had someone redo the nut and bridge to “convert” it to a 6 string. It’s got great action and sounds really nice. I’d recommend it highly if you can get it at a good price.

        Maria Miller

I came across this old thread while researching this particular guitar, the Alvarez Acoustic 5058 9 String. I have one of these in my possession. It came to belong to me when my father in law passed away in March of this year. It’s in excellent condition and I am looking to part with it if the price is right. I’ve done enough research to fully understand the rare gem I am in possession of and I’d like to get this guitar in to the hands of a gentleman (or woman) who would love it as much as my father in law did. I am located in West Michigan. I’ve spoken with a man in Texas who owned one back a few years ago and sold it for $600 and also am in contact with a gentleman here in Texas who sold one a few years back for $650. I can’t find anything “current” on these guitars except for 2 for sale in various places online, both for $800. If anyone is interested in purchasing this guitar or has additional information as far as current value please feel free to contact me. I know this is an old thread so hopefully someone sees this and gets with me. Thank you all for your time.

          Mark

P.S. there is one being sold on eBay right now for $550.

      2. Yeah, what he said
        JW

I have had an Alvarez 9 string since the 70’s. It gives you a lot of options, from a 12 string sound to a 6 string bass heavy sound, all in the same song. Yeah, it it more difficult to tune 9 strings VS 6, but if you simply tune one string on the down stroke, and the second on the up stroke, it is very simple to do. Plus, you have a lot more tuning options, if you want to go that way.
Specifications for this guitar include a solid spruce top, laminated rosewood back and sides, multi-ply body binding, a 20-fret bound rosewood fretboard with diamond/snowflake inlays, a uniquely shaped rosewood headstock overlay with the Alvarez logo, chrome tuners arranged in a 3+6 configuration, a rosewood bridge, a faux-tortoiseshell pickguard

      3. Alvarez 5058 9 String
        Greysun

I received my Alvarez 5058 guitar as a wedding present in 1979. Wonderful playing guitar with a unique fun sound.

In response to the misinformation about the neck (above): it is extremely stable, the neck on mine is straight, I have NEVER had to adjust the truss rod and the action is as low as any Martin or Taylor I’ve ever owned. The guitar is stored in a humidified house in a hard case with Herco case humidifier.

In the early 90’s I talked with a St. Louis Music district rep who said the 9 string guitars were made for about 3 years ’79 – ’81. They were made in limited numbers with more Yairi DY58 models made than Alvarez 5058 models. The spruce / mahogany model sold under the Alvarez label and the rosewood / spruce model sold under the Alvarez-Yairi label.
The Yairi has the traditional squared off Yairi 12 string style head-stock with 3 tuners on the low side (in the normal 1-3-5 spaces) and 6 evenly spaces tuners for the high string. The Alvarez has the angled head-stock with evenly space 3 – 6 tuners.
In 35+ years I’ve seen 3 Yairi DY58 guitars and only 1 (my) Alvarez 5058 guitar.
The rosewood Yairi has a warm tone with a touch more low end punch. While the mahogany Alvarez a little more mid/high jangle. I would suggest if you can find one buy it they are real treasures.

Other than my wife and dog my Alvarez 9 string is the most precious thing in my possession. It’s a most misunderstood instrument. I am fortunate to have had it by my side through many trials and triumphs for about 25 years. She’s a sweetheart, my “9 string nightmare”. She’s like a mule, she must have as much respect for you as you have for her.
