In 1969 we were shown around the Hoyer factory by Arnold Hoyer himself. I orders a black Les Paul copy and the bass player bought a copy of an EB3 – he made them especially for us and we paid £35 for each guitar!!!!
E-mail your address and I will send a photo of these guitar used at the "Golf Drout" in Paris December 1969 – friend of our then unknown "Wishbone Ash" played there a couple weeks after.
See my website for info on the "Graded Grains" & find my address – http://www.beechprojects.co.uk – John Gregory now 58!

I have a similar guitar, but was told by a music store owner it was made in the 60’s. Are you sure it was pre WWII? The german wording on the label "NURECHT MIT DIESEM ZEICHEN" tranlates to "Only genuine with this indication."

I have a Hoyer 12 string bought second hand in the 60’s, which I have had restored. It is the best sounding 12 string I have heard; certainly as good as the pre-war Stella’s. I play finger-style Blind Willie McTell stuff.
Can anyone tell me anything about this gutar eg construction , materials, date of manafacture, value?

Hi I also have a 12 string Hoyer honey in the center and black on the edges, it has a slite bubble bilt into the back of the guitar witch makes it realy unique, I bought it new in 1970 I would sure like to know more about it also, ive had it for thirty five years now and it is still in good condition.

      Phil,

I have one also. (Hoyer 12string) Have you ever found out anything about it??
I’ve had mine since about 1968. Got it used in a pawn shop. I’d like to find out if it is worth anything as a vintage piece. I still play it. It has a beautiful tone and finish. Delicate would be a good way to describe the music that come from it.
Take care, and if you would, contact me if you find any good info about this guitar.

It slightly dammaged and worn, that is one of the picups has fallen of and the neck is not straight but shouldent be to hard to straighten. besides that its a bit worn, but hey it almost 40 years old, but no critical damage, and to this date it is still palyeball.
    but it need some work.

      Nigel

In the late 60’s, as a teenager I played one of these guitars (Ipswich UK). This year I finally found one on sale and bought it. I have quite a range of guitars (Gibson / MusicMan etc.) but this one is just wonderful. What a sound and its playability is faultless. Then I found another on sale – rather older and in much less good condition. I’ll restore it though as the neck is perfect and its only a cosmetic problem.

Are there other people out there that would prefer a Hoyer Les Paul to a Gibson? It seems to me that the Arnold Hoyer company tried to improve on the original when they made these. I remember they were incredibly expensive back in 1969.

Any comments? By the way I play it through a Marshall JCM2000 TSL amp and its just such a good combination.

  8. need info for a 60's model Hoyer
    Jason

First of all, the serial no. is 006342. I know it was made in the 60’s, and it has the original pick-ups that still work. But other than that, it needs extensive work. It needs a left-handed nut, left-handed bridge, and strings. One of the tuning knobs is missing the casing that covers the gears. The lacquer is cracked, but the body is in good shape. It also will need intonation when I do eventually get strings on it. I tried posting in a bass guitar newsgroup with no luck at all. However, one of those people gave me the URL for this place, so maybe someone in here would be able to help me. I saw there were a few posts dealing with Hoyer, so I won’t be suggesting anything too farfetched. In the newsgroup, no one in there had ever heard of Hoyer.

    1. Re: Mystery Framus 12-string Acoustic Guitar... 'JMS' ?
      Peg

: I have a Framus 12-string guitar that was manufactured under the ‘JMS’ brand name — it even mentions ‘Franconian Western Germany’ on the label. It was purchased, according to the plate on the headstock, from the Mollenhauer Musikhaus in Fulda. The construction is identical to the ‘Texan’ but the bridge is mounted upsidedown and it has a few other minor differences. I have been told that the ‘JMS’ brand was for import to Poland. Is this true? Since it was made in April of 1968 — according to the Framus stamp ’68D’ — I am guessing it never made it into Eastern Europe and that is why is was bought in Germany. Can anyone shed any light on the ‘JMS’ brand? Were there other Framus pseudonyms? (I think ‘Contessa’ may be one…)

: I played a ’65 Epiphone FT-85 ‘Serenader’ 12-string for seven years, but I’m enjoying my strange and beautiful little orphan Framus 12 even more. It sounds great with a vintage Schaller soundhole pickup and my old Acoustic ‘Beach Boy’ amplifier.

I have a 6 string JMS that I bought at a pawn shop in 1975 in Houston Texas. It came with a very well traveled hard travel case. It is Model No J 306, SN 7628, built 69A. A luthier told me several years ago that the designers were 3 Nashville cats looking to market a good acoustic guitar to hop onto the folk music bandwagon. She sounds so sweet, and I wouldn’t part with her unless I had to choose between her and my Taylor! Yes she makes sweet folk music!

          Hi all!

I was playing this acoustic for several years and wanted to know more about it – it’s a JMS acoustic. Now, no model name, no serial no., just says on the blue sticker inside jms (gmbh – so german) GUITAR… foreign made instrument, quality guaranteed, and there are just a marking on the neck saying: STEEL REINFORCED NECK. I do not know and can’t seem to find anything about it. Need’s more repair than my knowledge allows – here’s a thing also. inside it’s penciled number 31. any info? will send pics if anyone interested.

      Jeff here.
I know a fellow who has the six-string version of your guitar, and it seems to be a pretty nice instrument: molded back, great neck and good action – maybe an overly mellow sound. Also, I see one like yours on eBay now, with a few scratches or cracks, and the bid was only $10.00.
I offered a little more, thinking my buddy could have a matched set (he has no interest in selling his). All we know about it is what’s on the sticker inside, and I’ll have to check back to get the serial # – which includes the year, you say? Thanks.

I own and play an original Odyssey Attila Ash 200 guitar. It is a through neck maple ash bodied model, with ebony fingerboard, twin humbuckers (Dimarzios) gold plated hardware and Badass bridge.

I have an Attila electric. Maple body with bolt on neck, Basass bridge, dimarzio pickups, grover machine heads. I bought it in Winnipeg in the late 70’s for about $350. All I know is that they were made in BC, and I believe that Paul Dean from Loverboy played onoe, as well as the guys in BTO

      1. Re: Attila Belogh Odyssey Guitar
        scott b

I worked for Attila in the early 80s for about 3 years. Odyssey was a small Company in Vancouver that used to produce about 60-80 guitars a month at its peak. They move to a bigger factory and never recoverd from retooling and the recession. (That’s my take on it) We built 50 guitars for a Loverboy Promotion that were copies of the guitar Paul Dean modified in high school( he put two hollow channels inside the neck to add a more acoustic tone)These gutars were plagued with screwups including over sized fretwire that was passed off as "Custom Jumbo Fretwire."

I remember Fred Turner had an Oddessy Bass. Sadly, Atilla is no longer with us, I learned alot from him. As to the value of your guitar, They used to sell for $500- $2500 new. your sounds like a mid range about $1200- $1400new.
Unfortunately because it does say Gibson or Fender on it and nobody really really famous played one you could probably expect to get about $300- 500 if you sold it.
I have two midrange Basses that I made while i was working there and I have them insured for $1500 each although I could never replace them.

: I need help to identify/date my Hopf acoustic/electric guitar. It’s probably from the 50’s. Any web sites have Hopf info?
      : Thanks.

: Depending on the guitar it is almost imposible. I have a 1963 Hopf Saturn63 and have found very little info on it. They are rare German Guitars today. It takes patience, if you can find any names or numbers other then the Hopf name on the guitar you might get lucky.

  25. Hoyer 12 string
    Mike

I have a Hoyer 12 string purchased in Germany in 1970. However, I cannot find a model number/listing anywhere on the guitar. The only markings are the name Hoyer and a sticker on the back that says "orgatronic gmbf" and the cities "Freiburg and and Karlsruhe". Is there a marking somewhere on the guitar that I’m not seeing (nothing visible inside the guitar)? I’m trying to get an idea of the value of this guitar for insurance purposes. Thanks. MA

      Cecil Haney

There is a number, serial number, inside behind the steel plate, at the heel of the neck, where it connects to the body. I hope this helps. Cecil

  26. My first guitar
    John McGuinness

I’m trying to get hold of the very first guitar I ever owned which was a Rosetti Solid 7 imported by the dutch firm "Egmund".
    Can you help?

    1. Re: My first guitar
      Harold Weller

My first proper electric guitar was a Rosetti solid 7. bought in 1962 from Reno`s in Manchester
for about £27. sort of red to black sunburst with two royal pickups mounted on a white plastic plate. Not a great guitar, but at 14 years of age
I thought it was the tops.

: I have a Hoyer telecaster guitar with the serial number 22028 on it. I am wondering how much it is worth and old. Could you please e-mail me an answer. Thank you!

      1. Re: Hoyer Guitars
        Roland

I have the same guitar. 50603 on the lid for the truss rod and 263xx (something) on the back of the headstock. 2 Humbuckers, 1 switch where the 4 pots are and another in the Les Paul position (above neck). I bought it used and in pieces though, so I can’t tell who it was made by. But the owner of a music shop in Germany claims to have recognized the guitar (I brought it to his shop, to ask) and told me Hoyer’s whole life story (which is also very interesting… jail time, etc.).
I’d love to see a pic of the original setup of the guitar, since I had none of the original hardware except for the machine heads when I first bought the guitar. So, everything on mine is aftermarket. It’s my favorite guitar of all times… I just got it back today after having it sit in Germany (where I used to live and bought the guitar) for 6 years… YEAH!!!! 🙂

        1. Re: Hoyer Guitars
          Roland

Oh, I just remembered something – in case anybody ends up reading this and wants to research their 50603….: The guy I bought mine from told me back then that he bought it new around the end-seventies or early eighties at Musik Brown in Augsburg, Germany. That’s where I lived back then. Musik Braun doesn’t exist anymore from what I know, but it was an "old fashioned family music store" kind of thing, nothing cool. The cool kids wouldn’t go there (… I only went once, I swear!!). But because Musik Braun wasn’t cool, and didn’t know what kind of those "new electric guitars" those kids wanted nowadays, they didn’t stock up on Fender, Gibson, Washburn and whatnot, but stocked odd brands that weren’t associated with anything cool. They just didn’t know any better. Thinking back, I would probably have thought that it is an odd looking guitar and having it could either be embarassing or "odd-cool". I wouldn’t have taken that chance 😉 Today, it’s my favorite guitar. I’m glad some nerds shopped at that store back then 😉

            Bodie Mountain Son

My dad has a Hoyer 5-string he acquired from an old lady. We’re curious as to the age and value. It’s quite unique in that you can adjust the action of fretboard and strings with a knob on the inside. Can’t really find much info on Hoyer banjos on the internet.

            1. Hoyer five string banjo
              Roger

I have a Hoyer five string too, and the strange thing about it is that the wood housing that attaches to the neck is fitted on the back of the tone ring, instead of around the sides of it. I’ve had it for about forty years or so, and agree with you that there is little to be found out about these banjo’s.
