Hi If you look on this site there are 6 individuals all asking about Gio Paulo Maggini violins. As the man only ever made 60 in his life it’s unlikely that any of these are the real thing. There are plenty of fakes around, look at the market in copies of strads of different qualities.Doesn’t mean your ar anyone elses is of poor quality but its 99% certain your, mine and everyone elses are copies. Genuine Maggini’s are in the 5 figure bracket but yours and mine are probably worth approx £40 – 80 UK pounds.
I have just aquired viloin also made by Giovan paulo Maggini Brefcia….were you able to find any information on the instrument or it’s value? Thanks Maggie…..Please e-mail me at [email protected]

My father has a Maggini fiddle that belonged to Judge Isaac C. Parker. This fiddle was purchased many decades ago at an estate auction and has been owned by an elderly man who has recently sold it to my father. I am trying to get the history for him and I thought you mayhave some information.

While it is very unlikely that it is an original, if it is dated 1617 it could be an original, but as with many of his violins he made, they had extreamly elabroate inlays on the back, the double purfling would be correct, but as I said, if it does not have the inlay on the back it is more than likely a fake, but seeing as it is dated 1617 it is a higher quality remake, millions of these came from German factories in the early 1900’s and are dated 1675-1695, many years after his death. I would still take no chances with it, take it to a professional lutherie, and have them evalueate it, also, what type of strings were on it to begin with, a big sign of a copy is synthetic gut strings, while real gut strings were used, and often replaced, they could very well be the original strings. And it also kind of depends on the bow, the wood it is made of, and if it is the right era, while it could have been replaced it is still a possibility it is the original one, from said time period. If it is an orignal, it could be worth 200,000 – 5.6 million, depending on the shape it is in. Even if it is a knock off, it’s not entirely worthless.
i want to know the value of a 1665 jacobus stainer violin. if anyone is interested please e-mail me. thanks.

This popular thread has been given its own page : Sebastien Kloz Violin
I also have a violin labelled ‘Sebastien Kloz An 1700’ It has a whole (not split) back and a wonderfully loud and sonorus tone. I played it through grade 8 and college to great satisfaction – it is my oldest of friends. I sent pictures of it to the professor of strings in Vienna. He said from the pictures, that it was a Bohemian copy. Probably what most are. An original would be worth an enormous amount as Sebastien Kloz was the German ‘Stradivari’ of his time. Good copies such as mine have a fine tone when played properly. I am happy with mine and always will be until I can no longer play! I paid £1000 twenty years ago. ‘Francois’ is probably now worth £4000. Your COPY will depend on how well it plays and how its’ condition is. If you want a fast ‘buck’ forget it! Better you GIVE it to a young talent who can use it and give enjoyment to an audience as they are generally loud instruments with a ‘moderately’ good tone. Violins are not like art! They can only be enjoyed by the audience of the player.

from what ive read and researched this violin is worth 2146.00 in usa money–1,100.00 UK money—this violin is from UK Originally, I also have exact same one. Not Sure of age of calculation for this.
Seems like no one can give a clear answer. No one knows anything about these? Seems to be a few of them out there. I even have one.
It all depends if this is a real Klotz or a copy. Sebastian Klotz (or Kloz) was one of the best of the klotz family of luthiers, I have seen them go anywhere from $2000 to $30,000.
If you could email me pictures I would be happy to give you my opinion.
I wonder if you are still there as it is now 2019. I’ve found this violin in my mother’s cupboard. She had it as a child but apparently hardly played it. I’m wondering whether it has any value, having read several valuations. I have photos of this violin if you wish me to sendthem.
Hopefully you can help,
Thanking you
Lesley

Hello,
Maggini preceeds Stradi and was late 16th and early 17th century..so if this is original it would probably be 1610 and not 10. Is the 10 handwritten or printed?

: I have a violin that is labeled Giovan Paola Maggini brescia 16(printed)14(handwritten). I have been told that it belonged to my great-great grandfather and that he purchased it through a Sears catalog. That information causes me to believe that it isn’t worth a lot, other than being antique. One interesting thing about it that I have received several comments on is that the shafts of the tuning pegs are silver rather than wood. If anyone knows any more about this model I’d love to hear it.

OK, folks, here’s the scoop. Thousands of copies of fine maker violins have been produced over the years. While the violins made by the real maker can fetch a LOT of money at violin auctions, the copies are worth much less, depending on condition, playability, sound, quality. Copies may be worth zip, or up to a couple of grand, seldom more (unless made by another fine maker, but they usually include their own label). If you think you have the real thing, or even a good copy, I’d recommend contacting an expert for an appraisal. Jacobus Stainer lived from around 1617 to 1682. Yours is obviously a copy. No way to tell, from your info, whether it is a newish copy or an old one. Condition also matters.
For retail prices of Stainer copies, check violin shop websites, such as this: http://www.hobgoblin.com/local/secondha.htm#fiddles

I understood he only made them until 1632, so how could yours be an original? It may have been made by someone in his shop. How much are you asking for it? What condition is it in?
