The lessor the quality of the guitar the less likely he is succeed. Look at the mexican Stratocasters. Best bang for the buck.
Teach him right handed. It makes no difference (Paul McCartney is right handed but plays left handed). Then he will have no trouble be taught or watching other players play or finding an instrument. There is no real left hand right hand, just depends on which way you start.
