  1. Takamine F-349 Mahogany Top Acoustic
    Philip

Hi, I recently purchased a 1979 Takamine F-349 Mahogany top acoustic guitar. There seems to be very little reliable information about this particular model anywhere, I know it is basically a copy of a Martin D-17, & was involved in a lawsuit because of it’s close resemblance to a D-17. I cannot determine whether the guitar has a solid top or laminate, & not sure of the back & sides either. The inner perimeter of the soundhole has a strip of ornamental black binding (original to the instrument)around it so to determine if the top is solid or not I would have to remove that strip. I believe the fingerboard & bridge are ebonized rosewood. It is a great sounding & playing guitar but would like to find out more valid information about it if anyone has any. Thanks

I own and have owned since ’78 a Takie F36S which is the jumbo F body knock off of the Martin D28. As far as I know Takamine used no laminate material at that time. Mine has a solid clear spruce top and mahogony side and back with some really nice inlay work on the rosewood fretboard. Customer service at Takamine might be able to give you more information. In the late 70’s Takamine was promoted as being equal to the Martin in all respects except price. After 25 years mine has never sounded better.

      Good Luck!

Yes! Buy it. I’ve got the one Jerry Miller of Moby Grape played and it is far better than any Martin.

: I have a marinucci guitar and i would like to know any thing about it?
: It is electric and does it have a value?

Marinucci were apparently a cheap Japanese brand and as such do not have much value. My son has an electric accoustic one – (much like a Gibson in looks) that we are doing up for nostalgia reasons.Have come across references about these guitars only in New Zealand so I don’t know if they were just badged for us under that name, something that was quite common back then.

        bluesfunkbass

Hi…I was reading your comment on a Marrinucci …My Dad owned a semi hollow like a Gibson copy Jazz…When I was at High school in the mid 70’s I took that guitar with me everywhere … It had a beautiful neck, action and sound…I lugged his old Gunn valve amp around also … I wish I knew what happened to those 2 items…
They would be nostalgic now I know hahahaha

I have this guitar, I believe. The back and sides
are some striped kind of wood, African looking. The fretboard is sandalwood I believe. The top may be cedar but I don’t know. Don’t quote me on any of those. The woods do appear to be unique for YAMAHA. The model number on my guitar is just G-130A. There is no 69 prefix. There is some stupid unreadable serial like 3202 on the top right of the label. This page might give you some insight on the age and history of your fine sounding instrument. http://www.guitarist.co.uk/print.asp?ID=6848&type=feat

      Linda

Came across a Yamaha acoustic guitar serial number either 9707 or 9207 (hard to read it on the foil label). Model is 69 G 130 A.
Has a neck that’s about 2-1/2" wide and 3-1/2" across. 14" wide body and 39-1/2" tall. Can anyone tell me about it? value? Supposed to be a first edition. Want to start taking guitar lessons and traded a ring for this guitar. The gal I got it from bought it new. We can’t find any information on it anywhere?

I recently purchased a Yamaha Classical G-130A in excellent condition. The sound is amazing . Its really a beautiful guitar. Mine has the zebra looking wood on the sides and back looking at it from the inside, but was told it was rosewood top? but I do have some more numbers on mine located just under the sound hole on the neck extension which read as: 30313202 and another number on the inside bottom of the neck support block which reads as: T0287785 If anyone can add to this information please drop a line or add to the above

Oh! I forgot to tell you all where if purchased the G130A classical Yamaha Guitar!? I bought it at a Salvation Army Thrift Store for $50.00 Less my senior discount was a whopping $36.00 and this is the second Yamaha Classical Guitar I have found in thrift stores or antique shops. Good Hunting to you all!!!

          1. I've just purchased a
            sfhansen

I’ve just purchased a G130A. top spruce I think, back and sides are zebrawood, all laminated even the fretboard koa maybe. But it is a really nice guitar. A little stiff, which makes it very percussive a great strummer, loud, great sustain and clear tone. kind of like an electric nylon string guitar with a clean tone amp with a little reverb! , might be great with a pickup. Might be because it arrived with heavy tension strings, which I have lowered a half tone. I like that, so I might keep that way. I did lower the strings, and yes it’s a bone saddle.

it’s a very basic guitar I think, a very good basic guitar! some, reverb I think it was, are writing solid wood and Brazilian rosewood even though the price is around 100$. There might be different versions, but Be careful, mine is not solid wood!

    1. Re: What Takamine is this?
      Bob

I was a Takamine wholesale salesman from 1980 to 1985 when the Takamine F-363 came about. The CF Martin Company in Nazareth, PA, had commissioned the Takamine Company to develop a line of guitars that could be sold as an underneath line to the Martin guitar that were becoming very pricy. The F-340 is a copy of the Martin D-18, the F-360 is a copy of the Martin D-28, the F-375 is a copy of the Martin D-35 and so forth. When the line was ready to be marketed, Martin demanded that Coast Wholesale Music, the company I worked for, also sell Rogers drums, horns, and etc. Coast was already selling Ludwig drums and other horns so there wasn’t the need. Martin pulled out of the deal and left Coast/Takamine with a line of guitars. The F-363 is a F-360 with an altered headstock and a mustache bridge, changes in the appearance from the D-28 look-alike. In fact, there were ads on TV and in magazines with bags over the headstocks asking the customer to compare the Martin with the Takamine. Changes continued to occur up to the present where the Takamine headstock now has its own distinctive shape with the brand name, TAKAMINE, written so a person can read it from right to left as an artist is playing it. I also have a Takamine F-363 along with a couple of D-28 and other guitars. I enjoy playing a lot. It does have a ply top rather than solid but the back and sides with the veneer rosewood are generally very beautiful to look at.

I hope this information is helpful.

I too have come across a F-363D Tak with a dark sunburst finish. Have you found anything out? It certainly is a beautiful sounding instrument. The guy I got it from preferred to play it as his everyday guitar over about 10 others he owns, including a couple of pricey Martins.

: Help! I’m looking for information about a Takamine F-363. I can’t seem to find any information about it. I emailed Takamine customer support, and they said they do not have it listed. It was apparently built in ’83, but I can find no information about it anywhere. Does anyone know anything about the F-363? Was it a fluke? Was it some sort of experimental model? Did Takamine actually make this model, or is it a copy? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! -David

Other than the two follow-ups to my original question, I haven’t received any further information about it. Admittedly I’m disappointed that Takamine has no answers. Dave, I’m curious about the the 363D sunburst. I’ve never seen anything like it. Would love to see a picture. In any case, if either of you hear anymore, I would love to know! I also have a Takamine F-363D sunburst that I acquired from a friend about 7 years ago who was not playing it. It is a nice sounding instrument that I use as my main acoustic guitar, but I also cannot find any information about it. I have always wondered how old it is. RJ

          1. Re: What Takamine is this?
            Paul

Hey, I have a Takamine F-363, similar to most of yours. Mine has: est.1962 printed in gold in below the brand label. F-363 is also labeled on mine on the support peice inside of the guitar. This is probably one of the older takamines judging by previous posts. I hope this satisfies some inquisitions about guitar age. By the way, does anyone know how much a vintage F-363 would be worth?

            1. Re: What Takamine is this?
              Gordon

I also have a F-363 D, which judging from teh serial number seems to be made in 1982. My brother gave it to me as a gift in ’84.
              Interestingly, I also had a F-360 S made in 1981.
Back in ’84, the 363 looked and sounded much better than the 360. However, as the years went by, the 360 has become better with age whilst the 363 is roughly the same.
When I had an appraisal done back in the early ’90s, the F-363 was known about, but was valued less than the F-360. The reason given is that the 363’s body is made from laminated or ply wood, whilst the 360’s body is made from a solid piece. As a result, it is expected that the 360 would develop over time whilst the 363 would not.
However, I have not had this corroborated by anyone else, and I am not about to cut into the 363 to see what the body is made of 😉

Hey, i actually just got that exact guitar from my buddy’s dad. He gave it to me for free. Good deal Eh? But anyways, if you look into the sound hole, printed in ink on the actual wood bracing itself mine has the date Dec 1978 stamped on it. Maybe yours does too? that might help figure out how old it is?

Hi, Just been looking for info and thought i would leave something. I have a 1981 sunburst F363D that i bought for $229 at Cash Converters, just east of Melbourne in 1999. It is my favorite possession and plays like a dream. I also have a 1976 F400 12 string(Martin lookalike) which is pretty good too.

Oops, I somehow reposterd someone else’s message as mine. However, I also have an F363D. It belonged to my brother who got it as a gift.
It was new, but i’m not sure when he got it. Maybe around 1980? Just a guess.

            1. Re: What Takamine is this?
              bob

I was a west coast sales rep for Takamine Guitars in the early 1980s. In the late 70s the decision was made that Takamine would not become the cheaper line sold underneath the Martin. Originally, Martin commissioned Takamine, complete with blueprints of the entire Martin line. Because Coast Wholesale also sold Ludwig drums, they chose not to sell Rogers drums and horns. Martin stated a condition of Coast selling Martin/Takamine, was the Rogers deal. Takamine ventured out on their own and had to change the appearance of their line. The F-363 is the first model with changes. The headstock and the mustache bridge made this model significantly unique. The headstock on this model was not used on other models and I’m not sure the bridge style was used again also. Not many F-363s were made/sold. They’re, in essence, a Takamine F-360 with the noted changes. Mine was made in 1979.

Martin stated a condition of Coast selling Martin/Takamine, was the Rogers deal. Takamine ventured out on their own and had to change the appearance of their line. I got one of these guitars around 1979 and it is by far the finest guitar I’ve ever owned! Better then any Taylor I’ve played. It will be with me the rest of my life! I’ve never had to have it adjusted and it just keeps getting better with age. It’s my baby! It was a gift from a boyfriend that gave me, besides this guitar, nothing but grief! I got it in Monterey California.

Could somone help i have a 1983 TAKAMINE The person i bought it from owned it from new but idont know what model it is, it came with the yellow fake fur apolstry, std tak case. the guitar is not what you would call a large guitar, but the the workmanship on this guitaris unbelievable. it is about the same size as say a cort 100 earth. it is built more like a violin imean like the bends on a say 335. pearl dot inlays, inc 2 on the bridge one each side of the bottum and top string. ibelieve the guitar was $875 AU in 1983 the serial no is 83040374 also the bridge has like a swollow tail and has asort of skunk srtipe at the button where the strap goes on, i have never seen aguitar built so nice,it looks like a maple top the rest looks rosewood of couse made in japan, the battery is hard to find,it is right up the start of the neck tight. if this gives any clue to anyone, please let me know what model it is THANKS NEIL

I found mine on E-bay 2 or 3 years back. I noticed the Brazillion Rosewood back and sides and how the headstock was different than any other Tak. I could tell by looking at it that it had to be a fine acoustic and somewhat rare. I was not disappointed when I recieved it. It is not a solid wood as I would prefer however the neck is. It sounds great for being laminated. Has a loud voice. Plays well. Just wanted to join the team here as part of a crowd wondering about this rare instrument. I guess it just fell out of the sky??? If Takamine knows nothing then who would ?. 🙂

I know this post was 17 years ago, LOL. That Takamine F-365S you have is the 1,333rd Takamine built in March of 1979. With that Serial number, 79031333. The first two digits represent the Year (1979). The second two digits represent the Month (March). The last 4 digits represent the number correlation of that amount made in March of that Year (1333).

        Stevan M

Hi guys I see that you are talking about Takamine F 363 model from the 1962. til 1986.
This guitar is identical as a Martin from that period, this model was a copy of a legendary Martin D-28 that was one of the best guitars in that time…
What the Japanese did was amazing..Their F model in some series was even better then original Martin D-28, price was cheaper more then to times…What happened then was the Martin Law suit against Takamine…They reduce production of the F363 also they stopped exporting them in the period..So if you say F 363 made in Japan from that period you actually have a very good and rear guitar…
To collectors this model is very interesting because today I think you can not actually find it that easy…
Price as a guitar if it plays well is a 400 to 800$ with case sometimes up to 1000$, but as a collectors piece goes up to 1500$-2000$ maybe more..
My advice to you is to keep it because you will never buy it again that is for sure!
        Kind regards from me!

My dad purchased a Takamine 6-string many years ago from an individual, and didn’t know what he had until he started playing it in public. He has asked me to look into it for him. The serial number on the guitar is #78121373. Any comments will be very helpful.

      See chapter on House Brands.

This trademark has been identified as a House Brand of the W.T. Grant company, one of the old style Five and Dime retail stores. W. T. Grant offered the Bradford trademarked guitars during the mid 1960s. Many of the instruments have been identified as produced by Guyatone in Japan. Bradford models ranged from flattop acoustics to thinline hollowbody and solidbody electric guitars and basses, (Source: Michael Wright, Vintage Guitar Magazine ).

        Hi!
I still have my Bradford. Was purchased for me in 1970 by my parents from Zellers discount dept. store. The neck is incredibly stable, about 30 ply going laterally across(count them at the back)
I sold it 30 years ago to someone for fifty dollars, and bought it back out of a music store about 15 years ago for 115 dollars for sentimental reasons.
These things play quite well but aren’t great sounding.
Strange looking beasts, though. I saw the same guitar with a different headstock name in Kingston Ont. a few years ago for 450.00 CAD. In 1970 these were 69.00 CAD.

I recently had it checked out from a guitar tech ago did some minor repairs like reflux the neck etc. It still plays and sounds good despite the wide fretboard. Just wondering if there are any collectors in Canada or the good ole U.S. of Aye! interested in vintage guitars. I can send pictures, just shoot me an email.

If you run across one or have one currently I may have interest. This goes for the amps as well. They do have my name on them! 🙂

I’ve currently got the 4 pickup white electric and the 3 pickup hollow body. Also have an amp. Would love a 12 string hollow and green, blue and yellow in the 4 pickup model. Would look at anything though.

        Thanks,

        Bradford

“Bradford” was the house brand for all house products in the old W.T. Grant stores, a national retail chain that went out of business a long time ago. (similar to Sears) The guitar was made in Japan by Guyatone. I know because my dad was a regional manager for Grant’s, and brought home one of these guitars for me and my brother around 1974-75. Wish I still had it!

Sir,I, myself, am an owner of an FG-612S Yamaha twelve-string guitar. Are you a musician? Have you had the strings adjusted, added a Martin thinline input to electrify the guitar? I am a musician and I have had these upgrades done. I regularly clean the neck and apply only the best strings. In return, the guitar plays more easily than any other instrument I, my band, or my patrons have ever played. You cannot consider selling this splended instrument. It is an icon. You cannot love beauty and sell this instrument. The two things are incongruous. Then again, if you are not any kind of artist or musician, I have seen this item being sold on E-Bay for 1/10 of its true worth.Consider it an investment. Keep it for afew years and its value will increase. Right now, an inscrupulous person might steal it from you for $300.00. Best wishes in finding something else around your home to sell rather than that glorious instrument. Happy Holidays

        Hello,

Im going to take a leap of faith and see if your still looking to sell your guitar? I had one given to my by an ex and since splitting he has taken it back. It was the guitar i taught myself on and I’m deeply missing it. So by chance if you feel to sell your guitar I would deeply love to offer it a loving home.

        Kind regards
        Nikki

        Aloha,
Is this instrument for sale? If it is, what condition is it in; and in the last two years have you determined your asking price? Sincerely, Eric Sigmund

      Juha,
There were only 500 made of this one. Made in the US.
      The features are :
      Unique "blue denim" color
      Very flat fingerboard
      Reverse headstock
      24 frets
      Unique body shape
"Dots" along upper ridge of fretboard
"Limited Edition 88’" on the 12th fret
Scalloped fretboard from 18th fret and up
