  1. Need info on Yamaha G-425S classical guitar
    Rosanne

Does anyone know anything about this mysterious model? It may be old, but I have no idea. Just bought it in a garage sale… It sounds realy great. Please send me any info on it (year, value, etc) Thanks.

I bought one of these brand new in 1981 or 1982 for around $230 in Ann Arbor, MI. It’s a beautiful looking and sounding guitar. Still in excellent condition

    Marvelous

I am wanting a picture of each Gretsch Jet Firebird from 1955 – until they stopped making them for my own photo album. I have a 1963 that I love.

Got mine in the early or mid-70’s new and paid over $300 for it then. It must be a low-production model and fairly rare, as I have yet to see one come up on e-Bay. The Yamaha site says it was made in 1972 and states the type of wood, hardware, etc., but no present value. A Yamaha dealer might have a BLUE BOOK stating values.

        Nanno van Eysinga

:I purchase my G 280 A in 1974 and also paid aprox. $ 345 CDN. Its main body is rosewood. I had it appraised 2 years ago by an appraiser at Tom Lee music stores in Richmond, BC and was told the value was easily 1500 to 1800 dollars.

Apparently these classical guitars were still ‘hand made’ at the Yamaha plant in those early days.

I got my around 1976-77 at the Navy Exchange in Subic Bay Philippines. I have been unable to find any other info.

        Nothing listed on EBay.

I have just picked mine up for £100 in UK. GET IN. it sounds beautiful. It has one scratch that devalues it but im guessing its worth a lot more.

        Charles Santos

In 2009, i went to Sam Ash store to buy guitar strings, and ended up on the acoustic guitar section. There hanging on the wall was a yamaha G 280 that i believe was new,or mint. I tried it and liked it very much. The sound was on the bass side, and it was very loud. The price was 395.00. I don´t know if it included the case or not.I didn´t ask .I bought a takamine CD132sc instead, for over 1000 dollars, because of the cutaway.I´ve been looking for a G 280 too.

      J Baird

I also own a tg-001. It was passed down from my mother who also played it as a child. Does anybody know the year the guitar was manufactured or any other interesting info on this model? I can’t find anything on the web.

    2. Re: Takamine TG-001
      Chris Matthews

You are VERY LUCKY (assuming the kind elderly lady did not charge much for the guitar!)

That is indeed a rare vintage model that Takamine produced in very limited numbers. As a local guitar shop owner in Merced, Ca, I would easily value that guitar at upwards of $2,500 USD (and I am saying that estimate with the guitar being in okay condition) more pristine models can easily fetch $3,000 on Ebay.com and I recently saw on listed on Craigslist.org for about $1,700 (which was A STEAL)

Definitely keep the guitar as the tone it produces is phenomenal!

        guitar-junkie-64

yup there good guitars. lots of tone & sound behind it.

I live in Texas and picked up my TG 001 at a pawn shop for 2,000. Worth every damn penny. easily i can compare it to my Spanish made guitars…beat’em easily.

        Wayne Boyer

I bought one of these guitars from a man in need of money due to the fact he had spent the family money gambling. I would just like to sell it because I have no use for it and have never played any musical instrument. And I felt sorry for his family. So if anyone would be interested , please let me know. It’s in really good shape and sounds great. Thank you

      2. I have a TG-001A takamine
        Anonymous

I have a TG-001A takamine and it is amazing. This guitar was made in the early 1970’s or even earlier and its a pro-model. The best guitar I have ever played. It is very valuable and a must for a real classical guitar player

      3. Takamine TG-001
        Maggie

I picked one of these up at a yard sale for $25. It was missing a couple strings (super easy fix) and a saddle (which I replaced). After reading this thread, and having a very difficult time finding any information on these instruments on the internet, I took it to Willcutt guitar shop in Lexington, KY to see Bob Willcutt knew anything about it. He looked at it and told me that it was likely only worth about $75 at most. He seems a bit sleazy, so I don’t know how accurate his estimate is. It’s also way off from what you all are saying here.

Has anyone been able to verify the value of these guitars? Takamine does not have any records of these guitars anymore.

      4. Takmine TG-001
        Anonymous

Has anyone found additional information on this model? I just picked one up in very good condition for $500.00 but would like to find out more about it.

  8. 2001 Martin HD-28 for sale or trade for Taylor 714
    Jeff Stockford

Hi, I have a 2001 Martn HD-28 in excellent condition. I bought this guitar new with a Fishman pickup installed at the Martin Factory. I’m asking $2000 for it. I would be willing to trade even for a Taylor 714 or an 814. The Martin comes with original hardshell case

    1. Re: 2001 Martin HD-28 for sale or trade for Taylor 714
      Jason Carr

I have a 1997 Taylor 714 w/ Sitka Spruce top and rosewood back and sides. It comes with an original hardshell case and is in good condition considering its age (has a few scratches on the pick guard and top finish). I am very fond of this guitar but might be interested in a dreadnought. I was formerly a fingerpicker but have discovered the world of midi and soft synths. Ever since my new endeaver I have not played my Taylor.

If you would like to see pictures of the guitar I would be more than pleased to send. I can send digital photos upon request. Also would like to see how the Martin looks?

I bought this new in 1979 and it’s been out of the case maybe twice! It took me a while to figure this out, but I have no need for it. Anyone know how much I should be able to get, and any methods to sell, other than retailers and on ebay?

        Lord Helfmich

Purchased mine in 2004- for 1.50 Euro at a garage sale. The young chap who sold it to me was a nice youngen. My problem is its not really up to date. the piece of junk is worth only penny or two of american smakers. dont by it, its rather out dated and my kareoke nights are much better when the keyboard is left at home and for composers like myself there is no MIDI outlet. Surfs up from St. Louis!

  13. Yamaha FG-750S Acoustic Guitar
    Bob Peyton

I am trying to get information about a Yamaha FG-750 S acoustic guitar, when it was made, the material used and the price it orginally sold for and any other information I can find

        Linda Thorn

: : I am trying to get information about a Yamaha FG-750 S acoustic guitar, when it was made, the material used and the price it orginally sold for and any other information I can find
: I got this info by keying the model number into Google. Its a review from a guy whose had one for decades.
        : Price Paid: US $175
        : Purchased from: N/A
: A long gone music store in Greenville, IL
        : Features: 8
: This a mid-late 70’s six string acoustic made in Taiwan. It features solid spruce top (hence the ‘S’
: designation in the model number), mahogony back & sides and a nato neck. The rosewood fretboard has
: 20 frets. No electronics, straight acoustic.
        : Sound: 10
: I bought this guitar simply because I fell in love with the sound the first time I played it in the music store. It
: is the most balanced acoustic guitar ever. The low end is pronounced, but not deep and rich, like a Martin.
: The highs are easily heard, but not trebly or ‘crashy’ like cheaper guitars. The volume is plenty loud enough
        : for me.
        : Action, Fit, & Finish: 6
: This particular guitar is a ‘factory second’, designated by the Roman numeral II stamped on the sticker
: inside and more noticably the 2 inch crack running down from the left side of the saddle. It was cleated at
: the factory and I swear it has not affected the sound at all. The finish itself is natural and a bit heavier than
: what’s found on more expensive guitars. The action was originally a little high (seems to be a Yamaha
: thing), but I had it adjusted and it’s great.
        : Reliability/Durability: 10
: Like steel this guitar is. I’ve dragged this poor old thing all over creation. I done things to it that I’m
: ashamed to say. You just can’t wreck this guitar, short of TNT.
        : Customer Support: N/A
        : See above!
        : Overall Rating: 10
: I would track down and kill anyone who took this guitar. I’ve had it for 20 years and along with my ’72 Les
: Paul Deluxe it gives me about everything I need guitar-wise. For the tone of this guitar alone I have to give

My dad bought this particuar guitar in Dec 1978 and paid $192. List price was $240, he got 20% off. I have the receipt from the purchase in front of me. We got his guitar out of the attic tonight. First time in many years that it has been played.

I posted the original comments on the 750S back in 1999. I still have it and it’s still my #1 acoustic, but a word of warning in regards to strings: use nothing but lights or extra lights! I put mediums on mine about 5 years ago for a fuller sound and within a few months (tuned to concert pitch) the saddle started to pull away from the top! Had to have it reglued by a local luthier, who told me that the medium strings were the culprit. I went back light gauge strings (Elixers) and have had not problems since. Elixers cost more, but they last forever.

I have seen this vintage 1978-1980 FG-750S retailing in the range $150.00 to $400.00. $150.00 would be a steal. The new ones ( 2000 production) typically retail for $399.00. The older ones are nicer and will sound better due to the aging of the solid spruce top. The older ones may have been all solid….not sure. The older FG-750S are fairly scarce since they were only in production a couple of years and few were brought to USA. It’s a nice high quality basic Dreadnaught!

I purchased A used FG-750S back in 1986 for around 175.00 and have played the hell out of it!
I’ve never had any work done on it other than changing strings and adjusting the truss rod. It still plays and sounds as good or better than the day I bought it.I’ve bought and sold many guitars since but will never sell this one. For the price it’s A great guitar!

            Nick,
We’ve lived parallel lives. I bought mine in 1985, took 6 months of lessons at the same guitar shop where I bought it (Klaverenga Guitar Studio, Lafayette, IN), and it still plays great–I’m not sure if I still play great. I love my Martin too, but this Yamaha still sings sweetly. It was and remains a great acoustic guitar–high value for an affordable price.

I am looking to purchase a taylor 410, 510, 610 or 710 preferabbly with electronics. Please let me know if anyone can help. Kirk

  15. Taylor 610 acoustic
    Betsie

I have a Taylor acoustic 310 signed by Robert Taylor (on certificate inside body). It is a six-string that has a Fishman pick-up installed. It is in excellent shape, with only spider web cracks in the finish. The original hardshell case is with it. I believe it was made in 1983. Can anyone tell me a range of its worth, if I were to sell it?

I recently found a Federico Garcia guitar in my grandfathers house, and have aquired it. I’m wondering if its worth anything? It’s in decent shape. And with some work on the covering it would look like new. Are there any sites that list how much certain guitars are worth? If so what are they?
    Thanks

They are boot leg and are worth $100 circa. Look in the sound hole and see the plywood top.

Despite comments to the contrary, the Sherry-Brener (the exclusive world-wide distributors) catalog list a new Garcia Grade 3 at $2,300.00. I have a 30 year old grade 3 in near mint condition that I certainly wouldn’t sell for any less.

I hear varying stories. Some were on e-bay last year for $120, but I’ve heard $250. I have one myself, that I bought for $22 a long time ago, and I’d pay $150 for another one for a little girl I know whose father died last year.
She plays a terrible pint-sized guitar, and sure could use one that sounds nice. Let me know if you leave near Southern NH.

There’s a lot of garbage out there about these guitars. New they cost about $230. (The garbage is that they’re worth over two grand.) Both Garcia and Hernandis are made by the same company in Japan. Both are excellent guitars. Ebay average price for Hernandes & Garcia grades one seems to be around $300 + -. Grade threes seems to be slightly less, but not much. I have a Hernandes grade one steel string I bought new. It’s a great guitar, but a little light in the bass. It is a solid wood instrument, as are the others

I have a classical guitar, a Garcia and I am also wondering what it is worth. I got it in 1969, a friend purchased it new in Madrid at his shop and brought it back to Canada for me… I’m near Ottawa.
It looks like a cedar top,the rest rosewood (back, sides and neck) and has amazing rosette work on the headstock as well as the sound hole and bridge. The fittings are gold. It stays in tune well, the action plays very nicely with a mellow sound but the sound jumps out at you when you play near the bridge. Other than the odd nick from over 40 years of use (I played professionally for 15 years, and still play this instrument a bit)it is in good condition.
I still have the original case with a key and lock.

Inside the sound hole is a sticker that reads:

              Fabrica de Guitarras
              FEDERICO GARCIA
              Exclusivas Distribuidores
              Antigua Casa Sherry-Brener Ltd.
              No. 1 Madrid 1969

I don’t know what this means.
Is it his 1st guitar ???
              His 1st model ?

Does anybody know anything about this luthier’s history ? I would guess it was handmade from the look of it. I don’t know anything about this guy and there is precious little on line about him.

: I just happened to see the above hatred followups which tries to garbage some very nice sounding guitars, i.e., Garcia and Hernandis. I have many guitars in my collection including Ramirez, Kohno, Rodrigues, Martin and Hernandis. The Hernandis guitars are really decent ones with top notch sound qualities. I have catalogue from 1981 in which the prices of Hernandis Guitar are listed as:

              : Grand Concert Guitar $1245
              : Concert Guitar No.1A $1045
              : Concert Guitar No.1 $750
              : Concert Guitar No.2 $600

: Clearly these price are much higher than $300!!!!! in 1981. In fact the price of Hernandis Grand concert has been competative with Ramirez 1A guitars. The Hernandis guitars have been made in Japan by a maker that worked in the Ramirez shop for years.

: The importer of the Hernandis guitars, Sherry-Brener Ltd. of chicago, has the current price listing as:

: Grand Concert Guitar $6500 (They are sold out)
              : Concert Guitar No.1A $6000

              1. Hernandes Grand Concert Classical guitar
                Anonymous

I own two Hernandes Grand Concert Guitars and I love the sound of both. I owned a Ramierez 4e and sold it! It had great volume and was really strong past the 12th fret; better than my Hernandes Grand Concerts but it just did not have the wonderful old wood sound of my Hernandes guitars. I do miss it though. I got both of them for around $400.00 each. One has a crack and the other sound board ‘ cigarette burns but these issues don’t affect the sound. Please haters of these guitars keep up the hating…it makes these wonderful guitars affordable. I also own a Garcia Grand Concert…very well built and very nice balanced sound, but more subdued than the Hernandis guitars. I also own a Hernandes 1a…not very well balanced and kind of dissappointing. but powerful sound. I’ve heard that Hernandes guitars are a hit and miss proposition. I own 2 Garcia 1a’s and both sound wonderful and are very well built. When Sherri Brenner moved his operation to Japan the build quality actually improved. I attest this via the two 1965 Federico Garcia’s both of whom are full solid top and sides. Both have dishing problems between the sound hole and bridge. Both were built in Spain. The sound of both guitars are wonderful but kind of subdued. I don’t play them too often. My Hernandes Grand concert guitars are my favorite and get much use. I love to play kuyonbaba by Carlos Domeniconi and Concierto de Aranjuez. The emotions the Hernandes Grand Concerts evoke are a joy to behold when playing these pieces. Both guitars stand up to my $5,000.00 Angel 100 , my best guitar. My Angel 100 is perfect in balance with superb overtones. The Hernandes Grand Concert guitars cannot compare in that regard but still are able to stir my emotions with the old wood sound. The Ramierez 1a’s are better built and much stronger past the 12th fret so I will admit that in that regard they are obviously superier. I would still like to own one, but they are too expensive. Until then I will enjoy my Sherri Brenner guitars.

                Cherie

I purchased this beautiful guitar when I was 18 years old. I am not 65. This guitar is in excellent condition and has been played very little. It has been safely stored in its hard case all these years. It is all rosewood on the back. I would love to find it a new home that would enjoy its lovely sound and its workmanship. It was one of the last ones that were made in Spain. If anyone is interested, please email me and I will send pictures. Price: $599. I have been looking on the internet and this seems like the going price for guitars that are much more “used” looking than this one.
