can anyone tell me what my M Bernard guitar might be going for these days .. it was made between 1991 and 1992 with only 225 said to be made but what makes mine even more rare is that it has a left handed 24 fret neck on a right handed body (A reavers of the Great Jimmy H)

I cannot answer your question, but to further the mystery, I have two Karl Hauser guitars.

My two karl hausers guitars had a second (american I guess) label glued over the original label inside the sound hole.

I removed the second label and the original label had no indication of the model.

I have used the better of the two guitars for years and love it. It has a very balanced sound and the intonation is excellent.

The tuning machines are not standard on either guitar and it is difficult to find new pairs so I treat them with TLC

I believe that during the 60’s many of these guitars were imported into America, but I only know this second hand.

I just traded for a Karl Hauser model 730 yestereday. The model is marked on the label in the left center area but this may be the english label that was mentioned above. It is a rather large label about 4" X 4" with a picture of a troubador looking character playing a guitar. I am looking everywhere for info on this guitar and can find almost nothing. The sound is excellent and the finish has checked uniformly on almost every square inch of the body. If you ever found a place that had good info, maybe you could post back where it was?

FYI, mine is spruce top with solid rosewood sides and back with a mahogany neck.

p.s. does yours say just Germany or West Germany? Mine says West Germany.

:::::: I was just looking for some information on my Karl Hauser guitar which has a Serial No. 720 ( model number ?) Made in West Germany when I came across this site. It seems to be like the others mentioned here, spruce top, rosewood back and sides and I’m assuming mahogany neck. Excellent detailed inlay around sound hole. Outstanding tone. I’m wondering if these were made by the famous Hauser’s of which none are named Karl, that I know of. The one I have was also bought in the 1960’s for about $350 which was a good price in those days. It was well worth it. I’d like to know what they are worth today?

This message system is wacky I tried to write a message and it posted my name over another persons message. MY APOLOGIES……. ANYWAY I BOUGHT A GERUNDINO IN 1971, THE LABEL WAS DIFFERENT AND I THOUGHT IT WAS A CLASSICAL.MY BAD, IT WAS A NEGRA BUT HE SOLD IT TO ME WITHOUT A GOLPEADOR and didn’t tell me that it wasn’t a classical,I didn’t know about negras then. It was a few hundred bucks at the time.sorry I sold it. Gerundino looked like a gitano, and was very outgoing. Not so Eladio.I have since bought a 1997 Gerundino, and have found the tone to be very different than Maldonado(and underpriced great maker) or most makers. The closest I have found in tone to it is a guitar I aquired from Hans Pukke from Santa Barbara calif.

    2. Re: Opinions Wanted: Conde vs Ramirez vs Gerundino
      earl ehrig

I cannot give you any type of opinion regarding your interests for a Flamenco guitar, I apparently do not have the experiences that you have had over the years to give advice about anyone particular instrument. However, I can honestly tell you this, I enjoyed what stories you had to give in this posting. I’ve been playing the classical guitar for on-and-off some 40 years now, I know construction techniques, and I know music notation and theory, but I’m a closet player who is just in love with this instrument and find myself reading or listening to the stories and advices from the pros. I apologize for not giving you the opinion you had possibly been looking for, and I thank you for your interesting advice regarding the choosing of a high-end instrument regardless of the Luthier. Regards

      1. Re: Opinions Wanted: Conde vs Ramirez vs Gerundino
        Gerardo de Altona

Earl, I perceive you to be a gentleman and a true aficionado of the guitar. The purport of your attitude is most refreshing, and I think that you make the best case for adopting a hearty approach when choosing a guitar: a guitarist’s love for whatever instrument he finds satisfying surpasses all other considerations. The brand, age, or history of an instrument merely titillate the ego, In the final analysis, it is the relationship between the guitar and the guitarist–that is, the music he or she creates–that matters most. All else is vanity. Yet I confess I am still vain enough to want an authentic Gerundino, regardless of the fact that the ones built for him are very fine instruments, though a little rough around the edges. Hey, the scrolling head of a Stradivarius is not as symetrical as a machine made copy, yet we appreciate the imperfection.

If anyone would like to read more about Gerundino, please visit my health care-related web site and look for flamenco in the "After Hours" section at: http://www.mednetconnection.com Use Google or Yahoo for the searh as I haven’t registered my site with any of the others.

Rich blessings to all guitar aficionados

        1. what type of guitar to buy
          Stacy Miller

Hi, this is Stacy Miller. I’m writing to you thinking that you are very wise on this issue, as I am certainly not. I’m wanting to buy a classical, or flamenco guitar in the very near future. I have searched the websites and found a few dealers, and or makers of guitars. I would very much like your appenion on what to do. There is a maker of guitars that I found on the internet named Renato Bellucci, and I was very curious if you have heard of him. I liked "the looks" of his guitars, but certainly don’t know anything about him, as I am a brand new guitar player just now taking my first lessons, but truely believe in getting something great right off the bat so you don’t feel bad afterwards about having to get another guitar to satisfy you on down the line. I read your opinion on Maldonado guitars which sounded really good. I plan on playing, as I’m from Austin, Texas some Mariachi style, Ranchero style, and some Flamenco. I was looking at a classical guitar that had a sinker redwood top, and a cocobolo back and sides. I felt that this was a very beautiful guitar. I thought you would know which guitar I would be most happy with. What type of woods, and what guitar maker. Thanks, Stacy

        2. Re: Opinions Wanted: Conde vs Ramirez vs Gerundino
          Tony

THE SITE SEEMED TO MISS MY INTRODUCTION SO MAYBE IT WILL END UP AT THE END..SORRY !! BUT HERE WE GO AGAIN!!
Hi…Pheewww..A what lot of flowery ego-talk going nowhere and telling us very little. We who don’t say a lot and know nothing learned nothing. We, the great unwashed which hides in corners awaiting a crumb of knowledge were let down fellers, by this aristocratic waffle.

I’m an artisan so sorry if I lower the tone old chappies or phi gamma deltas or whatever … but by the way the sawing of the top timber is quarter sawn, thus the grain should be as you noted in every sheet of it. The choice of the grain’s reality in the sheet..well that’s another issue altogether.

These timber guys are not dummies sawing timber willy-nilly, they know precisely what to do, what is needed and the artisan knows what to select. That’s not the issue when it gets to the critical ear…If the artisan can only afford A or AA for a top them we have a bit of a handicap but much of that can be resolved later…though not to perfection.

There are other issues whch generate the tens of thousands of differing guitar sounds and which I am not starting on other than that in full but making some pointed remarks generalised enough to bear fruit I hope. (and mix-in that music styles change our perceptions and exposure to a screechy and caucophonous world and musical abomination conditions us too) …

The concepts of harmonics generation and sound travelling are some of the "secrets" of some guitar makers which they work on in their tuning and bracing but also in their selection of type and grain, remembering that all grain is naturally "glued" as a laminate and ultimately the top is tuned by the artisan in accordance with his or her ears and beliefs through timber shaving.

Timber from one tree by is not by genus alone the same as another nor is a tree in one region, climate, soil, rainfall, toxicity, stress, storage, position on the logpile and so forth the same as another.

The discussion gets sort of circular until the timber is selected, is on the guitar , and the tuning starts. Some chaps try to get consistency by excluding many variables through buying from one site, one mill, one style of cut and yet as with us genus has variations in the fertilisation variations, exposure to sun..etc.

Someone then take say 50 sheets of AAA to a guitar factory and the elves start on it. Lets say 50 guitars come out, you chaps play 10 each and decide one is superior in 10 on average.

These timbers have had a radical process…being aged perhaps different years stored sanded worked combined braced with some variation both in each brace but also the timber of each brace ….and tuned. The variant, the quality assurance, is the final stage tuning….Unless this is done, without demand pressure by one consistent person the guitars will not stay the same sound even if every other aspect seems consistent.

        3. Re: Opinions Wanted: Conde vs Ramirez vs Gerundino
          Tony

This is why this whole aspect of your initial offering of information was correct in the resolution but forgot that at the end of it all is tuning…it is that which causes the variations when a quality name is on the guitar but the is no consistency. Its not some coinciding of parts and tolerences as one presumes in a particularly good car amongst other cars.

Even in the best works too, during the demand, periods ..for example the ’60’s…guitars were "imported" from other makers and the label licker remade them into something else…again variation. Finally for the moment, these pressure years saw fine and superbly skilled individual artisans getting "browned-off" and going to other shops or out on their own so some years were better than others Then people had everyday joys and downers, were getting elated, getting drunk, getting ill, being from time to time and unpredictably unhappy even depressed… and so month by month or week by week or day by day there were variations in the guitars.

These guys good and less so were sometimes turning out 50 guitars or more each per year!!…consistency went and this is where the final tuning was the last bridge to the client..as I said without absolute consistency, without one final examiner the margins were wide and it was heard!

Guitars should each carry the tuner’s name as well as the company name so that you can decide which tuning approach you like and make life easier.

In finality many of the previously low volume individual touch, absolute quality control shops which expanded enormously went back to small shops after the boom.

Theoretically speaking modern guitars could be computer cut and tested to approximate absolute consistency but somehow the old style gives it a soul..

One thing computers have done is turned the world into a sterile, rigidly digitised mindset but we were once analogue creatures.

Today "results" are more important than artisinal happiness and fulfillment, process and personal satisfaction. For that reason alone we should foster the individual maker as well as buying machine cut "para-perfection" if we want that repeatability.

By dicussing our needs with the factory co-ordinator(whether one man or supervisors of different "teams") and establishing with them the sound we like they can tune to us.

If we want that wonderful artisanship which is being driven off the planet through greed and haste and impatience we must foster it even at the working class end. We have to act elsewhere too, Governments and technical Colleges to resist the reformation of apprenticeships into "industry demand modules" taught "to fill today’s needs" thus entrneching this brave new world sterility and android mentality. So… please, let’s foster artisanship and realtionships and satisfying results with affection for artisans, an understanding, asking for acknowledgement of what we want and offering also communication and patience, Spain is already becoming another developer’s ruination with the things we loved about Spain Brazil Argentina going down the drain as we turn it into something else more like home..Let’s use the Spanish guitar as a symbol of resistance to a new colonialisation and sterility…cheers tony

      Gerardo de Altona

Be careful if opting for a Gerundino. He is an old friend of mine, and last visit he told me that he stopped constructing guitars in 1997, after his beloved wife passed away. So anything dated after that year is not a true Gerundino. His son, Juan, keeps the last two that his father made: a black flamenco and a blonde. Eladio, his brother, suffered a stroke some time back; and I don’t recall him ever making a guitar; so watch out for guitars "constructed under the supervision of Gerundino Fernandez Garcia."

May I be forward and say that choosing a guitar by name is something only to satisfy a personal bias, which I believe is quite OK. But it has nothing to do with procuring a instrument that will render what you need in a recording studio or on stage. Of course, some luthiers are more consistent than others in producing an instrument with the feel of a "living" guitar, such as Pedro Maldonado, in Torremolinos of all places. All the guitars, both classical and flamenco models, that I tried in his shop last year had "weight" in the bass, similar to my 1941 Jose Ramirez. I was tempted to buy one, even though I don’t play professionally any more. What a beautiful guitar he makes. I believe Moraito plays a Maldonado. I Pedro that in my estimation he surpassed his father.

OK. I’m getting long-winded. Here’s my two cents’ worth: You need to try the instrument first…know the spruce tapa (don’t get cedar as it cracks)…is the grain fine in the center?…perpendicular in the cross section? Otherwise the sound will not mature over the years. Don’t listen to the tall fellow behind the counter in Ramirez’s store: he doesn’t know his stuff as well as he professes. Finally, one thing is certain: you won’t get the one-in-fifty instrument that the luthier’s keep apart from the regulars if you don’t know your stuff. Some makers keep their best for the celebrities or those that appear to be on the way up.

I bought my Gerundino in 1971; and even though I was a recording artist with RCA then, he nonetheless tested me before letting me play the one he was holding back. He kept pulling out one guitar at a time and kept quizzing me about the characteristics of each. I was getting confused. He was not going to let me have anything I didn’t appreciate.

I have an Marcelo Barbero (Hijo), 1967, that you could only appreciate by playing it for a while then playing what you think is a super guitar–the sound is so full that you will miss the thickness of its sound afterwards. It’s not a pretty guitar, yet I’m not sure yet if I could part with it from my collection yet. I’d need to like the buyer a lot.

Having visited most of the big names as I toured Spain last year, Pedro Maldonado offers the most guitar for the money, by far. If $6,500 Euros is out of your reach, there is a luthier in Barcelona (great place to get robbed in the subway!) that makes a concert quality instrument for about 3,000 Euros. I’d have to look up the name, but his large shop is upstairs in what looks to be an apartment building, just off that wide street where the mimes, beggars, vendors, etc., gather. His top model guitar is a steal. Veeeeery nice!

Sorry for the verbosity. I hope my two cents will help some. If you think I might be of any help, feel free to e-mail me. You can contact me at my web site: http://www.mednetconnection.com (look in the A/H section for some flamenco pics).

Good luck in your adventure of getting a great flamenco guitar.

      Gerardo de Altona

      Nacho Barcia

Hi, I know you said no cracks but I will tell you anyway…

I am Selling my 1978 Jose Ramirez III (For many, last good year)

And it has 1 crack on the sound board that is completely stable.

Back and sides are pristine, and the guitar was adjustaed and re-scaled to 650. This guitar has a beautiful sound and had become easy to play also. (Playabilitie is not a strong point on ramirez of this age but this is not the case anymore)

It was also upgraded with a set of waverly/sloane machine heads, But I still keep the original Fusteros that were working not as new but pretty well.

Let me know what do you think.

PS You can watch on South Carolina.

Has anyone ever seen a Felix Manzanero student model guitar before? This guitar was purchased from Manzanero, in Spain, in the early 70’s. Non typical headstock,no signature on the label, standard bridge. The guitar however is very well made solid cedar/indian. Did he have apprentices at the time?

early 70’s manzanero student guitar??? what you bought was a sherry-brenner guitar made in japan and modeled after a ramirez. headstock looks like a ramirez? not a manzanero but a fake, still sound good though. neck was bent because it is a classical not a flamenco.

I recived the manzanero flamenco guitar and am very happy with it, even though it is a student model and came in a gig bag, it has exceptional flamenco traits and could be gigged. It uses solid woods and is extremely light, the soundboard is not a 1st choice for building, but it produces. I had the neck straightend (pressed) by a very experienced luthier. He was not impressed with the top and fretboard (rosewood), but was with the tone and playability.
I plan on keeping mine, it will be the only flamenco I own.

Will you still sell your Otto Vowinkel ?

: ’82 Thomas Humphrey pre-mill. guitar. Smaller bodied hauser-style guitar with incredible tone, that surpasses even his newest guitars. Several repairs have been made on the top but will part for only $4000. Possibly the best deal on any Humphrey that will easily become a collectors. CD/BR

: ’98 Otto Vowinkel Concert guitar. Originally owned by Russel Brazzel. SP/BR this guitar has incredible tone (sprucy) with excellent projection, response etc. $4000 or best offer.

: None of the guitars is missing anything in terms of sound quality. They all have excellent projection, tone, volume, sustain, response which is why I have collected them. But I must sell due to financial situations. Ask any question you have on them.

I just bought one. You can find them online at at least one place, I think it’s called Elderly Guitars. Just do a search on thomas humphrey c-tsh. They’re listing for around $2000. I got mine for 1500.

  21. Opinions Wanted: Conde vs Ramirez vs Gerundino
    Mitch Thompson

    Hello all,

I am in the market for a new flamenco guitar. I have some preconceptions about what I do and don’t want, but I thought I’d ask your opinions about some specific models. I have heard glowing reviews of the new Ramirez 1aF, and I know that Conde is THE industry standard at the moment. I have a fondness for Gerundino as well (without ever seeing one in person) – any comments on those?

I see lots of professionals playing Condes, but very little mentioned about the Ramirez. Any idea why? From what I’ve read, Ramirez has really started making terrific quality, easily played, traditional sounding flamencos. I just see little press about them.

Do any of you have experience with these new Ramirez flamencos? How do they compare to the high-end Condes? How about projected resale value? Will a Ramirez flamenco tend to retain its value as their classical concert models do? I assume that Ramirezes (<– is this the proper plural form?) command a high resale value not only becuase they are great guitars, but also because they are the brand everyone knows. I steered away from a Ramirez classical when I bought mine because so many people I know play them. I have a similar feeling with the Conde. I like to play something different, even if it is illogical.

I understand that your replies will all be subjective, but I am interested in hearing from others.

Enough of my babble – can you take a few moments to tell me your thoughts?

    Thanks.

    -Mitch

I am selling my Conde A26 Blanca it is in mint condition and I am looking at a Ramirez 1af instead. The conde sounds amazing but does not work for my left hand at all…I have a Alhambra that plays better…I can’t justify the $7,000.00 I paid for the Conde.
