I bought this in 1977 when I was in the Navy San Diego. I can’t find the model number but wanted to well it. I let my son take it to college where he beat the crap out of it. It still sounds and plays well. Scuffs and a couple of nics but I’ve kept in a hard case for the last 17+ years. Any shared knowledge would be greatly appreciated.
    All the best!

  5. Guild D4-NT HK Mahogany
    Matt

Hi there. Not really a "vintage" but I have never seen another one like it. I’d like to try to find another one and I have not had any results. So many of my friends love the rich sound and the absolutely gorgeous look of my all-mahogany guild D4-NT HK, however a google search for "guild d4-nt hk" (which is what is written on the soundhole sticker) finds zero results. Any idea where I should look and what I will be paying? I paid $500 for this one about 10 years ago and I assume that it should be around the same price. Any help would be great. Thanks! P.S. I have seen thousands of Guild D4-NT…but the all mahogany top, sides, neck, and back are what everyone truly loves about this guitar.

    Thanks!

Your label likely says ‘HR’ and not HK, as it may have just been messy. HR means your guitar has a hand-rubbed satin finish (IE it is not a glossy finish). Common model designation.

        Thanks

  7. Guild question
    Shannon

I was given a left-handed Guild acoustic as a trade, and am now getting around to finding it a good home. I am not very knowledgeable about guitars – I think it’s a D4, it has a RI sticker on the inside, the serial number is AD405288. There is a "True American" emblem on the top of the neck. It also has a TKL hard case. Any suggestions on what I should ask for it? I think it’s in good condition – there are a few very small nicks in the finish and some wear under the pick guard. I appreciate any help you can give me!

Burnsides were Guild’s import electrics, imported 20-25 years ago if I’m not mistaken.

Describe the guitar. Is it electric or acoustic, 6 or 12 string, rosewood, maple, mahogany, ash, a dreadnaught, jumbo, mini jumbo? And what is the serial #?, what type fretmarkers (dots or blocks), is the neck bound or not? Just need a bit more info.

I just got one on craigslist for $20 w/a gator case. It didn’t make any noise but I cleaned the switch now it works great. Pots are a little dirty so I think I will replace those. Locking nut and “floyd rose” look alike floating bridge, works alright but def not as much play as a floyd. Plays sweet too, probably $150 easy at a pawn shop.

      about 100-200 depending on condition.

I was wondering if anyone had a line on the old, almost vintage, Guild pointy-guitars from the 80’s that were denoted as X-79 (Skylark or Skyhawk I believe) or the X-80 (the Swan or reverse X-79). : I have a D4 NT that’s from somewhere between ’92-’94, which I bought new. I believe it was made in Rhode Island. It just keeps sounding and looking better with age, and the wood on the front (Natural) is developing a beautiful patina as the years go by. Similar to an old natural finish Martin. I love mine, as i’m sure you will yours, and it will give you many years of pleasure, getting even better as the years go by. I really can’t say enough about the joy it’s given me. Great price for a classic, and apparently semi-rare, beauty.

I have had my D4-NT for about 15 years and it’s as great as ever. $510 sounds about right to me. Fantastic guitar. By the way, I believe NT stands for "Natural" and refers to the finish.

If it’s made in the USA you got a great deal. I have one I think I bought it in 1994 new, and I still have it and I love it. I have 26 guitars and I tried the new guild also and I didn’t like them at all, I had to return one I actually bought.

      2. Guild D4NT
        Jerry

The NT refers to the NaTural finish. Nothing else. I bought a barely used 1992 D4NT in Arkansas in 1994. It does not have a selling price. I also have a pre-owned 1994 Martin D1 that is my daily work/practice/explore guitar but when I record or perform it is the Guild that I use.

Way back in 1976 I accompanied a friend to guitar stores to shop because he had been burglarized and was smart enough to have insurance. We went from store to store and played various guitars back and forth to each other until we got to a place where I found a Guild D4 (Cherry Finish) sitting on the counter. I began playing and my buddy, who was playing a beautiful sounding Gibson, stopped and said, “Whoa, brother, let me play that one, you take this.” He handed me the Gibson and the end of the story is he bought the Guild, sailed it around the world and still plays it.

      3. Guild D4 NT

I have one, and had it for 20 years or so, I love it. It’s been away for 11 months getting fixed because I left it out everyday because I played it so often. The wood got a bit dry and started bowing. I just got it back thanksgiving and it is by far the best guitar I own. I have a Martin, but the sound is so full and just plays wonderful. Highly recomend it to anyone. And I would get another in a second of anything happened to this one. I think I paid $500 new in 1993 or 94.. It was recomended by a good friend Frank Corrillo. Enjoy and defensively get one!

Back in the mid 70’s a pickin’ friend of mine got robbed and had to replace his guitar. Luckily he was wise enough to have insurance. We went to a guitar store in Sacramento, CA and picked up a couple of guitars and just started playing toward each other. He started with a Martin and I started with a Gibson. We went through Fenders, AYs, off name brands, etc. He was pretty set on the Gibson until I spied a cherrywood Guild D4 NT. We started playing a Paul Simon tune and after about a minute he stopped and asked to switch guitars. He bought the Guild. I got my own (used, can’t believe someone would sell this guitar) around the turn of the century and have never had a better guitar. It holds tune for longer than is believable. You have the world’s best guitar at a very good price. Start pickin’ and grinnin’

I have 87-88 Guild liberator custom with the 10 db boost; its the most high end out of the three models. Its all gold hardware including the strings and floyd rose. Also its loaded with bartolini pick ups. A music store here in Oregon offered me a grand for it, but i’m not 100% on what it is worth.

According to the Guild.com website, it appears your guitar was made in 1989 at the Rhode Island plant. I just bought a 1990 D25 NT. I believe the NT stands for the "Natural" finish. This should be a solid spruce top. The D25-M designates the Mahogany top. Yours (and mine)will continue to appreciate in value. You have a great guitar!

Guildguitars.com has a serial number list to help date your guitar. But it’s confusing. In 1988 they had a "DA" prefix. In 1989 it was "D". So yours could be either a 1988 or 89, made in USA at the Rhode Island plant. (Today, Guild is made in China.) Yours (and mine) will
continue to appreciate in value. You have a great guitar!
And personally, I prefer the solid spruce top to mahogany.

        Jake in Cedarburg

I have a D25-12 NT. Serial D250868. I can’t get into the Guild site. Do you folks have any insight about this guitar? It was under the Christmas tree back in the late eighties. I left it in my parents cedar storage closet when I went to college. Just picked it up last week and popped the case. I’d forgotten how gorgeous she is. Original strings a good thing? Been out of the case twice – straight as an arrow. Please speculate on it’s trade-in or resale value. Thanks. Jake

  18. 1955 Guild M-20
    Brian

I recently took in on trade a Guild M-20, serial #AH-2621 and the label says Hoboken, NJ where they had been for a short time. It was a student model guitar at the time but has an incrdible sound for something 52 years old. It is a small bodied guitar (think Robert Johnson Blues King) except with square shoulders. All mahogany. Any one have any idea what it is worth?

  19. Guild S-285 Aviator
    Riley Wilson

I recently picked up a 1984 Guild S-285 Aviator. Very cool guitar with 3 EMG strat style pickups with mid boost circuit, original Kahler trem, black hardware, set neck and more. HOT pink color with the original case which is very beat. Whoever started out with it played it a lot. It sounds great and plays so easy with 10’s, I’m re thinking my attitude about older US made guitars. Anyone else even seen one of these guitars? I’m pretty sure the age is correct as the serial # is HC100193. Thanks.

      Matt

Sorry if this is late or you have your answer already, but the stock Tremolo on a "The Lance" is called an Accutune. They came on several 80’s Japanese guitars such as Aria Pro, Cort, and the Dean Hollywood Z

      Stephen

David, I had one of these guitars back in 1987 and could kick myself for selling it…If memory serves me right the Kohler parts should fit. My buddy had a Ibanez "Rocket Roll" Flying V that had the Kohler and we compared them…Couldn’t find a difference. Hope it helps. Let me know if you want to sell it!!

      1. Re: 1980s model guild burnside - the lance
        David

Stephen, I’ve ordered the high tension springs from Kahler. Thank you for the suggestion. I just finished replacing the factory electronics – Seymore Duncan pickups and new pots and bridge switch. Was my first try at such a project but I’m very pleased with the results. The guitar sounds very good now. I’m the original owner and don’t play too terribly much, and I’ve considered buying another electric as this is the only one I own, but I cant seem to find a reasonably priced guitar that has the great feel that this one does. After I fix the bridge, I may buy a set of the Kahler string locks and it will be a nearly new guitar again. 🙂
Again, thank you for the info!

        1. Re: 1980s model guild burnside - the lance
          David

I received the springs that I ordered from Kahler and unfortunately they’re too short. I guess I’ll check into replacing the bridge, Kahler has a hybrid that may fit for around $200, that’ll put me at $400 to completely redo the guitar….

I’m looking for any information that I can find regarding the replacement of the tremolo springs for my “Burnside – The Lance by Guild” electric guitar. I can send pictures if needed.
