      Hi, Bob.

I see no one has replied to your post, so I’ll throw in my 2 cents.

I’ve seen a new Hopf Virtuoso model selling from a vendor on the net for $6000. Of course, your mileage may vary, but I would think a true concert guitar in excellent condition should be worth several thousand, especially if the years have been kind to it. I own a Hopf production guitar made in 1975 that I paid just a few hundred for a couple of years ago. I love my guitar and would LOVE to play one of Hopf’s concert models… I can only dream of what the sound must be like… but, unfortunately, I’m in no position to spend thousands on an instrument.
If you have a good guitar shop in your area (not a "mega store" with thousands of strats on the wall, but a real _guitar_ shop), they would probably be willing to sell it for you on commission. If you have no one close by, I can highly recommend Maple Street Guitars in Atlanta, GA (www.maplestreetgtrs.com). They’ve sold 2 guitars for me.

      Hope this helps,

Looking at your web site I realized I should consult you about a guitar I own and occasionally play. It is a 1981 Dieter Hopf Virtuoso Concert Classical guitar with free floating bridge and, of course, a hard case. The strings are extra long, for they pass over the bridge and attach at the end of the instrument. I usually string it with Savarez made especially for models of this type.

It is difficult to describe the Hopf sound except to say that it is to guitars what the Harley sound is to motorcycles. Somehow it penetrates to your bones when you hear it.

And this particular instrument does produce magnificent sound. It is one of the few Classical guitars I have ever heard that renders base tones that are brilliant without being either brassy or boomy, and are in perfect volume balance with the midrange and treble tones. The result is an unparalleled crispness of clarity that makes every note project with delicious distinction to the ear. I believe the internal construction conspires with the full frontal motion of the top wood to stream sound both through the sound hole and through the smaller holes latticed into the bridge.

This instrument comes with a Passport (if I can find it in my safekeeping place) that describes its wood characteristics and serial number, a little extra that illustrates Hopf’s pride of perfection in guitar fabrication. The guitar is in perfect condition.

I shall be happy to send you photos of the instrument and case should you want more information.

I am writing to you specifically for the purpose of inquiring about the value of the guitar. I know what I paid for it in Germany in 1982, but I have no idea what it is worth today.

I no longer play this guitar with the frequency or ardor it deserves. It is far too fine an instrument to spend most of its life in my closet. So, I am considering selling it.

While I can sell the instrument myself, I know I might have a better chance of finding a quality buyer through a dealer or broker. Would you be interested in handling the sale of my Hopf guitar? If so, what are your terms?

Here we are 11 years later, and I still possess my 1981 Dieter Hopf Virtuoso Concert Classical guitar with the free-floating bridge (long strings attach to the end of the instrument) – see initial message at

My phone number has changed to 727 669 5511. Any interested buyer may contact me by telephone or at my web site http://bobhurt.com/contact.php.

If you feel interested in knowing more, I can send photos and post a youtube video on request. Obviously, I feel no rush to sell, but I will let it go to a good home for the right price.
