This popular thread has been given its own page : my lousy experience with 30th St Guitars
30th Street Guitars has been my "go to" place for years. Matt usually takes care of me personally…there were a couple of times when I had tour dates booked and needed a repair in a hurry and he literally made room on the bench to take care of my repairs while I waited. I’ve dealt with all the NYC guitar guys over the years and I’ve never met anyone who was as helpful and conscientious. I send everyone I know to 30th Street and everyone has always been happy.
You have to remember that even though these guys are working in a shop, they are musicians first. That’s how they wound up working in a guitar shop…so even though they may not have wound up with the opportunity to record and tour like some of us that have been luckier have had, they still have the same dreams of musical glory that we do. If you treat them as comrades instead of clerks their level of appreciation will go a long, long way.
Think about it.
Freddie Katz, NYC
Pal, you sound like you’re a pain in the ass. There is a way to get anyone to do anything, particularly a shop owner, and there is a way to produce them throwing you out of the shop and closing the door in your face. I’ve used 30th Street for years, have bought and sold guitars there, and never a problem. But you can’t be a jerk. And for sure you can’t "swear and lose your temper," then go on line and slag the shop and expect readers to sympathize with you. Jerk then, and jerk now.
Wow, I also recently had a similar experience with a strat that i brought in. IT now has single coil hum and also, my high E string doesnt "pick up" properly. I also have fret buzzing on the low E string. I was going to take it back to get these things fixed…
Having Known them for Many years, Having had many guitars repaired and bought at 30th thru Matt & Doug , Im sorry….This does not sound like them. They are the best in the biz. Sounds like we are missing an expletive or part of the story. 30th Street Guitars is the BEST!!!!!
aj- Foreigner, Counting Crows, CheapTrick, The Dead, & Many others.
wow. i had a similar thing there, too. may be they know their stuff, but the ‘tude is awful.
: Everyone makes mistakes — often the difference between a good repair shop and a bad one is how they treat the customer when the shop makes a mistake.
Everyone makes mistakes — often the difference between a good repair shop and a bad one is how they treat the customer when the shop makes a mistake.
I brought a Tele with Kinman "noiseless" pickups into 30th St guitars for a new toggle switch. It wasn’t urgent, there was just a little crackle when switching. The pickups are about 2 years old and have indeed been free of hum since they day I installed them. I recommend them highly.
When I picked up my guitar from 30th St, the new toggle switch was in, but the guitar had noticable single-coil hum. I heard this in the store, and even brought it home and to my practice space to make sure. I went back to the shop a couple days later and was told that the repair tech/owner was out for a week, but that they had another tech coming in the next day to cover. So I left the guitar with them and came back a couple of days later.
To my surprise, tech #2 said he couldn’t hear any hum and even said he’d stake his reputation on it. We plugged it in and, sure enough, there was plenty of hum and tech #2 looked embarrassed while the guy behind the counter laughed at him and his "reputation." This was all very amusing except that I’d wasted my time going back and forth and my guitar was worse than when I’d brought it in. Tech #2 advised me to come back when tech #1, the owner, was back the following week.
Today, as instructed, I went back and saw Matt, the owner, tech #1, the expert. He said there was no way anything he did could have caused the problem. I pointed out that the guitar was whisper quiet until I left it at his shop, but he denied any responsibility, though he was at a loss to explain what was wrong. I protested that I had been back and forth 4 times, and was frustrated that the other tech initially denied even hearing the hum. His response was that he was away so couldn’t answer for what transpired. Nor did he offer to put the guitar on his bench and troubleshoot. Instead he said "it wasn’t me" and that something was wrong with the pickups.
Here’s my point: whatever happened, it happened on his watch — he’s the owner and "I’m not accountable for what happened while I was away" doesn’t cut it. While he was more than willing to cite his own expertise to justify his lack of responsibility, he apparently didn’t have enough confidence to try and fix the problem. He was so caught up in denying that it was his (or his employees’) fault, he made no offer to repair the guitar, or even explain the remarkable coincidence that my pickups started humming exactly when he worked on the guitar.
At that point I said I would bring it someplace else and that I wanted my money back for the toggle switch repair. He had the incredible chutzpah to say, "Ok, then give me back the toggle switch and I’ll put your old one back in." What nerve, after all the runaround I got from his shop, to ask for his $10 switch back.
I forget exactly what expletive I uttered at that point, but Matt was unwilling to discuss it further after that. I guess that’s where he draws the line — I guess it’s fine for his shop to give me my guitar worse than when it came in, and it’s fine for him to offer no recourse, and it’s fine for him to nickel and dime a customer who has come back again and again in good faith; but heaven forbid the customer should lose his temper and swear in frustration.
Way to step up, 30th St Guitars.

I bought a tan FG335 II used in the late 80s, and I love the guitar. A year or so ago I discovered that black ones were made also, and was lucky enough to find one on Ebay. It is more worn than the tan, but sounds fantastic, and I love them both. I’d love more information on these guitars, too.

I bought mine in 1981 for about $240 in a shop in Salinas, CA. The list I’ve seen on several sites show it listed retail originally at $800. I’ve dragged this thing all over the world(Army) and it is still in amazingly good shape and sounds good.

i bought an ASI sustainiac too. and i know nothing about it at all. and my friends know nothing about it either. have you found out any more information about it? if so please msg me because i would like to learn more about the guitar. thanks
in reply to all you that bought this guitar the ASI SUSTAINIAC this guitar was made in the 60s
they were made with the best pick up system i have seen i buy every one i see just because they are so RARE! this guitar is made in the USA . fetures an active system powered by 1 or 2 9v bat. that alow you to hold some sick ass notes for as long as you hold down the fret , dep on your model they have a on and off switch a selector switch and an effect , 1 volume pod a tone pod , and an active gain pod if you have got this guitar for 3 to 400 bucks you stole it ! if you have any further ??ss about your model feel free to email me [email protected]
Have one for sale right handed with a lrft handed neck435 cash
Sorry to disagree with you but I worked for ASI as the Guitar technician and Sustainiac installer and these guitars were produced between 1989 to maybe 1993. They were mad in Taiwan and the guitars are cheap POS. The Sustainiac is a great invention made by Alan Hoover who also worked with and is still producing newer versions of the product out of Indianapolis.
Not sure if you remember Andy, but I use to have one of those back in the day. I remember the guitar being extremely lightweight, the action was okay with some tweaking, it sustained. That’s about it… 😛
: you got a very rear giutar there and 1 of the best sustain giutars they will ever make. It has a very rich sound to it not so smooth but very rich sound to it and it kicks some ass. they stop making this giutar in the early 80’s so hold on to it it might become a classic

I, myself just picked one out of a pawnshop here in Ohio.
Love the guitar except the floyd rose …likes to go out of tune after dive bombs and flutters
The sustainer is really cool. Love feedback…in key, and low volume.
Have you figured out the switches yet?
Any advice?
Have you discovered the switch which lets you choose or blend the harmonics?
Also How long do the batteries last
Do ya still have it?

My father has an electric/acoustic guitar that he bought brand new in 1965. The only identifying mark on it is the word ‘CHALLENGE’ on the head of the guitar (I don’t know the part where you tighten the strings). I was wondering if you guys could lead me to a site that might have an approximate value for it. A guitar salesman told me that it is worth only a couple of hundred, but I’ve been lead to believe that it is worth more. Any help would be appreciated. Please e-mail me with any responses at ‘[email protected]’

I have a spanish hollow guitar made by Bela Gemza circa 1969. Need a valuation on it though before I go to the next step.
strange, I had a Uncle Bela that made classic guitars. Do you know where he lived?
Cindy- Do you have any flamencos? I own a ’65 Gemza flamenco and it’s better than any Spanish luthier’s I’ve played, with the possible exception of my ’84 Manuel Reyes – and I’ve owned them all: Ramirez (several ’60’s), Contreras, Feliz Manzanero, Esteso/Conde Hnos., Manuel de la Chica, etc, etc.

PLEASE HAVE YOU TIPS , PRICES or STORIES ABOUT THIS GUITAR

A very underrated bass, it has very good overall sound with flexibility. Mine is a -85 cherry red beauty, with it I have played lots of gigs, but the best place for this one is the studio. You just plug it in to the D.I.-box and you’re ready to go. The deep end is very clear, not mushy at all, very easy to eq. And if you want, you’ll also find that rock-klang, especially when played with a pick.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could tell me a little about my Fender Squier Stratocaster. It has the "Big 1970’s" Headstock, with the 70’s lettering, and its serial number is SQ25808. I was curious as to where it originated from, and the year it was made, plus anything else. I am most curious because, it plays, and sounds great for a ‘fake Fender’. It gives a real (American) Stratocaster a run for its money. Maybe not quite as hot as my sunburst Fender Lone Star Stratocaster, but close!! Thanks!

Would seriously consider making an offer on a rare guitar that is not really sought after at the moment. Traditionally, most Explorer players want the two humbuckers standard version.
I want this guitar for utilitarian purposes mostly, so no 4 figure returns on this request please. Blue Book says around 400-600 for excellent to mint condition…I will give 700 for the right guitar.
Thanks,
Harlowe
