We have a Kay 6 string guitar, model #L6386. We don’t know the exact year, but it is at least 20 years old. It is in excellent condition. It has fancy carvings on both sides instead of a round hole under the strings. The number is inside one of the carvings. Does anyone know how much this guitar is worth?

Personally…At Most I’d Only Pay $1,700 for it AT THE MOST. I’d say $1,500 private sales, and $2,000-$2,500 for selling it to a shop.

        Mike

If you search out the description of this guitar, it would tell you it has Mahogany sides and back. If yours is Rosewood, then it is probably the first year they made these. Check the serial number on the label, the last 3 digits should be less that 250. Rumour has it the Factory had cut out a number of blanks for this guitar with rosewood then there was a fire the destroyed these blanks so they made the rest out of Mahogany. I don’t have any confirmation about this but I have a Balboa made the first year and my last three digits are 050 and mine is rosewood back and sides. btw they are pretty good pickups. Value around $400.00 US or more , depending on condition.

            Rick P

I own a Fender Balboa that I purchased new in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada in 1984 or 85 with Rosewood back and sides and the last three digits are 776 . I have always liked the sound of this guitar but with age I totally love the richer tone .. its definitely a keeper.

          David McGouirk

I have a Balboa and the last 3 digits on mine are 048. It has rosewood sides and back and a mahagony neck. It is a beautiful guitar. What kind of pickup does it actually have? Mine has never worked properly. I think one like this in VGC should be worth much more than $400. Maybe $1000 to a Fender collector? It is a rare piece!

: I have a Garcia brand guitar made in Nov. 1970 from Spain. It’s in excelent condition and was wondering how much it might be worth.

Actually the guitar was made in Japan and sold by Jim Sherry of Sherry-Brener in the US during the 1970s. Sherry used a number of labels. Some indicate the Grade of guitar (1, 2, or 3) and the tonewoods used.
      What does your label say?

According to a chart I found, in 1975 the first number produced was 112804 and the last number 130304. Your serial, 114983 falls between then therefore your guitar was made in 1975.

Check it out at http://www.mrgearhead.com — LOTS of information.
I’m looking for info on my D25 serial 191778 and that’s where I found it.

            Patrick

I looked inside mine and the serial number is 129912, I believe mine’s a 75. It came with something called a ‘True Tone’ pick up system in it, that I’ve since sold on Ebay… too micro phonic and too much feedback. I put a Rare Earth Humbucker in it but it still sounded like shite amplified. This Guitar is honesty the nicest sounding and playing guitar I have ever touched, all my friends concur, now If I could only get it sounding really good live. I play Takamine’s, because I can’t make this sound good with a pick up.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I’m thinking of just ordering one of their Real Tube systems and cutting a giant hole in the guitar and putting that in there.

I have a sunburst SBG200 that I bought used about 8 years ago. Although I love the feel of the neck, it has never really sounded like I wanted it to. Would you suggest taking it in for a tune up or something. I think that it might need the pickups adjusted or something. Do you know where to find the tuning specifications for this guitar?

I have an SBG200 . Its pearl white and I payed 300 bucks for it . I think this is the heaviest sounding guitar yamaha has ever made . The four knobs is just insane with the switching pickups . The neck (especially the neck) is just sick dude . I move through it as if it was nothing . The sustain is massive and the action is pretty awesome too . This guitar is hella tyte when it comes to shredding on the guitar

    1. Re: Information on Lero Guitars
      Chris

I have an old solid body electric (2 pickups with volume and tone knobs for each, and switches to turn them on and off, plus an adjustable bridge). My Grandfather bought it in 64′ at the Eaton’s department store in Moncton, N.B. and I found it in the attic a few years ago. It needed new wiring, but now it sounds great. It’s a tough guitar, keeps it’s tune really well, is lightweight, and best of all, it cost me next to nothing. I really like the look of it (black, single cut-away) and the sound it makes…especially distorted. Clean tone’s not so great, but I have an acoustic for that.
I’ve been looking for information on the company (made in China) but so far, it’s like they never existed.

      1. I have the same ole black electric guitar here… I got mine at a local music store 75/76, played it for a while and put it away… just dug it out last summer and have been rockin for the last lil while on it…

i was given an old electric guitar called a Lero, mines pre-lawsuit to the gibson headstock, and its a Les Paul copy and the pickguard setup is similar to the 1971 Gibson Les Paul Recording (LPR)i need information

      1. Black Lero Les Paul
        Ibby

I bought a black Lero Les Paul about 2 years ago and really like it. Nice, heavy guitar weighing maybe 8 or 9 pounds. Good action too. Nice old Japanese quality.

        1. Black Lero LES PAUL
          Anonymous

I just bought the same as you at a pawn shop for 180$.

Real nice, body isnt in great shape.( aged lines and a couple dents n dings) but has a silver humbucker pickup and another pickup thats white… i dont want to open it up and check all the parts cause its old and i dont want to hurt it.

All i could found out was that it was made between 1970-1974. Its black with a white strip around the edge. 2 white pickup switches, and 4 gold dials on it. Reading “T” on 2, and “V” on the other 2. the pick gaurd is elevated from the base of the guitar. and headstock is identical to Gibson, except it says Lero.

There is also a pickgaurd soft of thing beneath all the dials n switches, and no opening on the back.

If anyone could tell me anything more about this i would really appreciate it.

Only markings on it are “Made in Japan”

My friend bought a Lero Fender Strat copy he paid around 10 bucks more I believe. I never did play much but I had fun with it, my friend who was in a band borrowed it and I never got it back! Thanks Marty. The friend Danny that’s had the White Lero Strat had an uncle do don’t modifications to it, he went on to play last time I talked to him he had some real stuff no copies. My brother had a Lero Bass guitar back in the 70’s.It was cut like a Telecaster with 1 p/u& vol.& tone knobs.
Decent tone, clean and clear when played through his Gibson "THOR" bass amp. The oddest thing about it was that the bolt-on neck seemed to be made up of many 1/8" thick pieces of wood laminated together( the long way) before being cut into a neck, giving it a vertical striped look. Lero amps were a "stencil" product of Garnet Amps of Winnepeg Can. Great info at garnetamps.com

        Roger B from St-Hubert

        Hi,
I have a Lero Stratocaster copy that I got about 26 years ago and it was already about 10 yrs old. It’s light woodgrain with a black pickguard and needs new wiring and switches as all you hear is buzzing and static. But the touch is great and it’s a fun guitar to play and still looks GREAT! It was my first electric guitar, and it’s worth getting fixed. Anyone out there have one of these or know who can fix it up?

          Anonymous

i have the same guitar just bought it from a pawn shop in mint condition for 120.00 even came in the origonal case. not sure how old it is but it plays better than my real strat and im lovin the pickup selectors its got in it. it also could use a little work on the electrical but it only really needs the contacts cleaned. thats about it, pretty easy to do yourself if you have a spair hour or two on a rainy day.

I was given a Léro bass, and it has a sticker that says "Made in Korea", so to all of you thinking they are Canadian made, sorry. But they are Korean. The quality doesn’t look too great as it’s not a laquered finish. I wasn’t able to test the pickups or anything either seeing as how I need a new bridge and nut. Definitely not a "good" bass for the time as there are useless holes in the body.

      Joshua Melney

Hello. My friend’s dad Sam has an old Lero guitar that was given to him a long time ago. It’s a decent looking guitar with a sunburst paintjob. It has a retro looking pickguard that I think is a tortise shell pickguard. The guitar has a whammy bar that Neil lost somehow, and it has two knobs and two switches for tone I think. Neil’s dad doesn’t know if the electronics still work though, the neck needs some adjustment and all the the tuning machines are stripped. It is a six-string guitar, but right now it only has one seriously out of tune string. Even though it has many problems I’m still very interested in it, I can’t find any info on Lero guitars so any help would make my day nicer, farewell.

I have a Lero I bought for $100 25 years ago. It was originally a cream colour, Fender Telecaster style. It had cheap pickups, cheap bridge and cheap heads. I sanded it down, repaited it ala Van Halen design, drop in a whammy bar bridge, a Dimarzio super distortion pick up, replaced the tone and volume controls, soldiered the tone and volume toghether using a capicitor and it sounds real wicked. I spent about $100 as all parts were used. Not bad.
The guitars were made in Japan. I stille have the back plate with a little gold ‘Made in Japan’ sticker on it.
Good guitars for a starter when the were around.

Greetings!I’m currently fixing a Lero electric guitar for a friend. It is approximately 35 years old and is in decent condition. It needs new tuning keys, a new pod for the tone knob, a new jack, etc. it looks very retro and is a dark sunburst color. It has a very thick neck, a bridge you can twist manualy to change the action and the oldest whammy system I have ever seen. Serves like a primitive spring version of a floyd rose. The tone isn’t bad and there is two pickup switches to turn each of the single coils off or on (resembles that of a hoffner bass). When fixed i presume it will be a great little guitar and if not, I can smash it on stage!

Your description of your friends guitar you’re fixing sounds strangely familiar to me. Today I just purchased a Lero guitar for 10 bucks out of the Buy and Sell in Winnipeg. Dark sunburst, a manually twistable bridge, two pick-up switches and yup the weird whammy system too. My model is a hollowbody, in fact thats the only reason I purchased it. The things is I dont know where this guitar was stored for the last 25 years or so…but it actually smells! Do you have any pics of the guitar you’re working on? I’d love to see them….what are the chances of twoo of these smelly guitars surviving all these years?

Hey there. I am trying to find out the worth of a lero electric guitar. My boyfriend just found one in my parents house. It is a basic model with amp. It does have the sunburst design also. But no bells and whistles. He replaced the strings and it sounds awesome, but it doesn’t want to stay in tune. Sounds like he might have to replace the tuning knobs also. Would anyone know the worth of a Lero Guitar. We figure it dates back to the mid 70’s. And is in excellent condition.

i also found a lero guitar. i bauth it from a friend of mine for 10 bucks. it was in really bad shape and i’m trying to fix it up. it sounds like the one up there that he is talking about, same bridge, wammy bar, etc etc.. but mine has no original paint left on it, it was painted yellow from top to bottom. what i’d like to know is what the original paint looked like, a picture of it would be VERY aprechiated. i have pictures of mine so if anyone wants to take a look i took a bunch in detail (screws, pichups, full guitar, bridge, etc…) the neck is the part thats in the worst shape and need alto of repair but it’s holding togother real good, it’s just that the guy who tried to fix it last time put glue from a gluegun in it. anyways, if anyone has a pciture for me PLZ EMAIL ME WITH INFO. Hi, I’m actually surpised that I found anything on these guitars. I was just working on a old Lero 6 string acoustic guitar – but it was in very rough shape. I don’t know how it stayed together, there was only one back rib left and the top was missing some pieces too. Someone had made a new bridge saddle for it (out of wood) but it looks from the marks on the bridge that it had an adjustable saddle and possibly a tail piece hook up too. I know the woman who orginally purchased the guitar back in the late 60’s. Do these other guitars have any sort of serial #? this one actually has a model # and serial #. any info would be great.

              Thanks

There’s a 12-string Lero for sale at a little junk shop on Agricola street in Halifax, Nova Scotia that says Made in South Korea on the label. It needs a bridge and a few other minor repairs and the guy wants $50.00 for it.

      Double D

I have 2 Lero acoustics. They are both Martin copies. One of them was my 1st git I learned on. My folks bought it 2nd hand in around 1977 in Toronto. So there may be a Canadian connection. My 2nd Lero I found in the garbage and has never really been playable. I am in the process of documenting my git collection so I’ll try and send you a pic of the pair. I’m sorry to say they are of "Sears" quality and probably not worth much. Maybe they were in the Eaton’s catolog in the ’70s!

I have a tele copy made by Léro (yes – with an accent over the e). My brother got it used in Nova Scotia in the 1970s, so it must be at least 30 years old. That makes two posters with a Léro connected to NS. Hmmm. Maybe they were made in Halifax or elsewhere in the Maritimes? I have used it for 20 years.

The action is great but it too won’t stay in tune very well. I had to replace one of the 2 pickups years ago. It sounds decent – warm. Very solidly made and heavy. Never seen or heard of any others until today on this site! Looks like rosewood fretboard – not laquered.

I just bought a Lero (accent over the ‘e’) on ebay, its got a single mid body single coil pickup, its like a strat copy, only the cutaways are the same length, its a sunburst, has deacent action, stays in tune ok, I need to replace the machine heads though. it came from a guy in New Brunswick, so Im thinking a big connection to the maritimes, yea… if anyone has any info on these guitars Id love to hear it!

I have a Lero 12 string acoustic. My brother purchased it sometime during the mid seventies at a local department store in Miramichi, N.B. It got passed on to me about 5 years ago. It’s a rather unique looking guitar with a trapeze style tailpiece. Unfortunately, the action is horrible and it desperately needs a fret job. It also requires patience to tune. I have little doubt that this particular model is a Sears quality guitar, but it has held together surprisingly well all things considering, and it’s still fun to play every now and again.

I have a Lero hollow body sunburst dual pick up 3 position switch has that Gibson head stock and body style, bought it for $20.00 at a swap meet 30 years ago and with a little adjustments still sound good holds it tune. I’m still playing it today. I would like to know more about it.

      2. Lero Mandolin
        Dr Allen

I have a Lero Mandolin. Bought it for about $60 in 1973. It is in it’s original case and in excellent condition. I still break it out and play it once in a while. Never did know much about the company but it’s sticker says ‘made in Canada’. Anyone that knows anything about it would help. Still playing on the original strings.

      3. Lero tele-style bass
        GDWilliams

I had this bass sitting in the closet for the longest time, when out of boredom, I decided to ask google where this thing was made, how old is it, and what’s it worth? It wasn’t long before I came across one that was almost identical to mine, residing in a serious bass player and collector’s, umhh….collection. Check out the praise Gene Nunn directs toward his Lero telecaster-style bass guitars. And in the ratings of the various guitars and bass guitars on the Ax Vault, the Lero basses places ahead of actual Fender Stratocasters! I dunno… Maybe I’m interpreting something over there wrong, but it’s hard to escape that he really does place a very high premium on the Lero bass’s at least….maybe not so much all the other knock-off varieties the company apparently put out. But on their tele-bass guitars, he ain’t even selling them! (while the Strats and Tele’s are moving left and right over there). https://axvault.com/members/genenunn/collection

        Hi there,

I just recently required an old : Lero Mandolin in it’s case. Anyone have any info. It has the orginal sticker inside that it is purchased from Remeny Music on Queen Street in Toronto. That is a fantastic haven of history etc. Just thought I would fire this off because I just acquired it today and thought I would see what I could find on the computer. Thanks for any input. All vintage or antique mandolins I see for sale are every other name but Lero.

      5. Small Lero acoustic
        Anonymous

My son (not a guitar player) bought a little acoustic guitar for my granddaughter. It won’t tune up and I realized the original bottom bridge is gone, and someone just shoved a piece of wood under the strings, they are attached with a metal piece screwed to the bottom of the instrument.
I went online to see if I could get parts, but apparently not, from what I hear here. I’d like to fix it, but I guess I’m on my own.

      6. I was given a Lero SG clear coat wood with a black pick guard 2 hum-bucklers with a solid bridge that the tail piece has been moved 2 shorten the length of the strings. Stickers covering old screw holes. Works but need sum new nobs and should change one of the tone pots and one of the switches! I read that there’s sum Garnet-Lero connection. Says made in japan. The neck looks like 5 pieces of laminated oak and the body is 2 pieces. (maple I think?) Not a bad looking & sounding vintage guitar! Looks like has been played alot from the wear on the frets. Winnipeg.

I have a Lero Banjo Uke. I received it as a Christmas present in the early 70’s. I was already playing guitar and thought “I’ll give the uke a try” and asked my folks for a banjo uke. I got one! I believe it was purchased in Amherst, NS. The tag says made in Japan. No S/N. I used to tell folks I played a little banjo and then drag this out. I know, really bad pun.

      8. 1970 Lero Les Paul
        Ibitz

I bought a solid body Lero Les Paul that dates from about 1970. This is a nice vintage guitar that plays really nice. Some parts of the finish has worn to the wood which happens to be real wood and not plywood or worse, particleboard. It weighs 9 pounds and has the heft of an older guitar. The guitars Lero made in the mid-1960’s appear rudimentary and unrefined in comparison with this guitar. What a difference 5 or 6 years make in a company’s life.

Hi. I would like to purchase one each of the above listed instruments. I do not want a collectible guitar. I am not a collector. I do want an investment guitar. I am not an investor. I want a guitar player’s guitar. I am a guitar player and closet musician of about forty years duration. I will pay a reasonable price for one each of the above listed instruments, depending on the actual condition of the instrument. My "ballpark" buying price for the 0-18 is $800, and for the 000-28 is $1000.I am NOT buying for resale, and your guitar will go to a very good home, be respected and loved, and will be in caring and capable hands.
Folks with ‘collectible’ and/or ‘investment’ guitars should advertise on eBay, where ALL Martins are in mint condition, sound great, are highly collectible, make a great investment, and begin appreciating in value the moment they leave the factory and every year thereafter!

: I HAVE A MARTIN 0-16NY SER#211975 VERY GOOD CONDITION HOW MUCH IS IT WORTH…..

      Kathy,

Your guitar was made in 1966. Assuming reasonable condition for its age (a couple of well repaired cracks are OK), it would probably fetch between US$1200 and US$1500. The 0-16NY is no longer produced by Martin. To get a new one made by their Custom Shop would cost the best part of $3000. It is an excellent small body guitar, particularly suited to folk picking, country blues etc. It features a non-adjustable truss rod, mahogany body and neck, spruce top, rosewood fretboard and bridge.

I have had a New Yorker since the mid-seventies and would have to be on the bones of my arse before I would sell it. Some of the more prominent 0-16 New Yorker afficionados include Gram Parsons, Ian Anderson and Roy Rogers (the blues player, not the cowboy). Eric Lugosch once swapped his custom built J-65M for an 0-16 New Yorker and didn’t regret the trade.

Martin advise stringing the New Yorker with silk and steel strings but it sounds better with extra-light steel (.010) and these have done no harm to mine in the best part of thirty years.

      Happy Trails

      Vince,
The book price for your instrument is in the neighborhood of $800 – $900 for a guitar in excellent condition, and less if the condition is less.
Is the guitar for sale? I am looking for a decent 0-18 or 00-18. Martins from the early 70’s are not particularly valuable since the company was having production ‘problems’ at the time. I know, because I have a 1972 D-28, and had (which is why I want another) a 0-18, both of which had problems which cost time and money, but which when they were rectified resulted in acceptably nice ‘player’ instruments. I’m a player, not a collector.

      Lillian,
Martin 12 string guitars from the 70s were poor instruments at best, and have commensurately low value. Your guitar is worth in the neighborhood of $800, depending on the actual condition, from a guitar player’s point of view.

      : Thanks!
