: I have owned this 9 string guitar for some twenty years and was wondering what it would appraise for. Any help would be appreciated.

I had one for a while and I lost it, I’d be willing to buy yours if it is in good condition and you still have it. If so, contact me with the info- Thank You, Lena

I have had mine since 1998.. took me ten years to find it… Found it in a pawn shop in Olathe, KS for 450 bucks..It will be the only guitar I own…I just wonder how many were made?

: I have owened my DY58 since 81, and have a friend that bought one shortly after he saw mine. I paid $750 w/case, "full retail", my friend found his for just under $500. I still feel I made a good investment, I’ve been playing it all these years. Other guitars have come and gone, but I’d never sell my DY58.

An Alvarez Yairi DY58 DCB with a few cosmetic cracks sold on EBay 5/12/04 for 202USD. The dbl. high E, the dbl.B and both G strings share a common hole at the bridge…
      FYI.

I saw one 2 years ago at the big midwestern guitar show in Elgin, IL called "guitar maddness". A shop from Ohio had one asking $300 or $350.

I didn’t have the money at the time or I would have bought it. I play fingerstyle acoustic, and often wonder how stuff I write could sound on that guitar, and how it might influence my compositions.

I have seen an autographed version by the late Michael Hedges from california go for $1000. But I think that was largely due to the signature and the fact that he’s dead.

i have owned mine for 6 years, i inherited it from an old guitar playing buddy who died of cancer.
These guitars were made at k yairi’s shop in japan. yairi is a luthier who makes guitars by hand the old fashioned way. our guitars were known in some circles as "Nashville Tuning" guitars. i go to nashville every few months and have only seen one or two there. make of that what you will. The dy 58 is valued at $1,100.00 but in all reality it would be damn hard to get that price for several reasons:
        1. yairi guitars are frequently overlooked as not being hot or in fashion
        2. many guitar players are not up to snuff to handle a nine string guitar.
        3. guitar players assume that made in japan equals cheapness but in the case of yairi, and a select few others, they are wrong.
        4. guitar values are a market driven value…you can only get what someone will pay.
so the best way to think of this is that you are lucky to have a good guitar like this, and because no one knows about them the chances of it getting stolen are very low.
have it insured in the thousand dollar range.
(i used to own a used/vintage guitar store)
i keep my yairi mounted on a wall in my office so it is always handy.
        good luck

I bought my DY 58 new in 1983. Although I have no intention of ever selling it, I have often wondered what it is worth. I paid $600. for it, but would not let it go even if I could get twice that amount for it. In the 21 years that I have owned this guitar, I have yet to see another one. It’s uniqueness & great sound are why I would never think about letting it go.
I was at a grand opening for a new (relocated) guitar shop near my home yesterday, and was checking out some 12 strings. I only found one that came close to my DY 58. It was also an Alvarez Yairi. Model # RD 20, I think. Had a great sound, & I almost bought it. Still might before it’s over. Maybe I’m partial to the Alvarez Yairi line, but it was a nice guitar.
Till then, I guess I’ll just keep bangin’ away on my ol’ 9 string. Lucky me ! 🙂

I have a DY 58 that I bought 16 years ago for $600. I think it is a great guitar. I like that it sounds like a 12 and plays like a 6 with a rich bass sound.

        Alan D. Newton

Signed DY-58 Alvarez Yari serial number 34742…ordered in 1976…in hand in 1978…

Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts pros or con: the top developed a crack when the hard shell case was runover in 1984. The top is pitted at the pickguard from amateurish playing causing a slight separation. 3 questions: 1) value today 2) should I replace the top and guard 3) value if these are replaced. Not thinking of selling the Yari. With the hard shell case I spent $478 (and yes, I have seen them valued in the $1300-$1800 range a few years ago.

I’m looking for an Alvarez-Yairi DY 58 with Direct Coupled Bridge circa 1988-89 . Please email me if you have one to sell. thank you.

            1. I might consider selling my Yairi DY58
              Mark K

I have an Alvarez Yairi DY58 9 String Acoustic Guitar built in November 1979 that I may consider selling.

I never thought I would as this guitar is a Martin killer, a Taylor destroyer, and the most incredible guitar I have ever owned.

Alas, I started a small business this year and cash is running thin. I will not let this go cheap though. As you know they are very rare. Somebody on this post said 600 were made. I have heard only 80 were made and that is probably why you never see them for sale.

If you are seriously interested, I can send you pictures and we can talk about value.

              Thanks!

              Mark

I OWN THREE ALVAREZ YIARI ACOUSTICS, FOR MANY YEARS, A 1980 DY-58 NINE STRING, A 1991 DY-62 ACOUSTIC/ELECTRIC AND A 1983 DY-47. THEY ALL PLAY AND SOUND GREAT. I RECENTLY SAW JOE BONOMASSA PLAYING AN ALVAREZ YIARI ACOUSTIC ON STAGE…YOU GOTTA LOVE THAT.

      4. I have had mine since 1980 and love it!!! I don’t think I would ever sell it. You can’t find them, they play great, and sound awesome. I have had many guitars over the years. I still have this one! Love it!!!!

I have a Stewart Wondertone Model 9012 Serial # 2594 which belonged to my father, I was wondering what its estimated value might be, there is damage to the lower neck of the guitar in a slit in the wood and I am wondering if it is worth getting repaired.

Hello- I was wondering if anyone knows the value of my 1937 Martin model R-17. I don’t know much about it, so any info would be greatly appreciated. It was a gift from an old friend. Supposedly, the bass player of the group Boston owned this instrument, and it has a long background that I have mostly forgotten. Thanks in advance!!

I just watched Antiques Road Show today (Sept.7,2006) Someone brought in a 1937 D-18 guitar. The appraisal they gave on it was &12,000.00 -&14,000.00. They told him it was not appraised at it’s full value because it had some repairs done on it. The full value would have been $18,000.00 – $20,000.00. Needless to say the man almost choked!!!!!

      1. Washburn Acustic Guitar Appraisal Needed
        Anonymous

Hello, I have a washburn around the year 1980 to 1981 acustic guitar made in korea. It is a d-12 model, from the sticker inside the guitar and says George Washburn model D-12, but the serial number is not there. It does not say model d-12 followed by a letter. The sticker also says made in Korea. It is a 6 string guitar natural wood in front, and I think cherry on back. It is a very clean guitar with no scratches anywhere, and the adjustment keys are new. Can you give me some kind of value on this guitar? Thanks

Quite a coincidence, but I just sold a Drifter at a garage sale for $20. It was a friend’s beginner guitar. The next day, a guy bought it from my buyer for $40 and seemed to think he was getting a great deal. I heard its a low end guitar, but it served my friend well.

      August DeClemente

I bought one in 1984 for about US$-535 at a shop in New Haven CT. I suppose that included a second hand case and tax, but it suggests that the list price must have been about $750.

Please let me know if you ascertain a current market price. You may want to ask the factory how many were made.

      Good luck

      1. your CG Conn drifter classical model number DC 747 made in Korea
        Anonymous

I personally have been studying researching and collecting little known or mostly under known guitars for almost 40 years now my father and grandfather used to work for CG conn so I have a lot of information that has been lost because of record keeping failures. I believe it was the year 2000 Steinway bought out the remains of CG conn and there were little or no records forwarded or kept or most were destroyed or lost. the most telling thing about your question is the word Korea not North Korea or South Korea but Korea which would represent a time before 1950 when all of the peninsula was known as Korea before the Korean warbroke out which we were involved n and still are armed at each other as the news shows every month and every year.CG conn had contracted with a Korean manufacturerwhich was run and owned by French guitar craftsman that works for Gibson Guitar Company from 1897 up until 1927 when he moved to Korea and started Crafting guitars for c.g.connt he model the drifter was one of the most popular models that they made for connso the answer is the drifter was manufactured from 1927 until 1949 and a plant that became a part of North Korea and it was bombed out of existence and its owner was killed in the same skirmishthis model the drifter was pattern after a student Gibson guitar this there is commonly sold it this particular individual designed and built for Gibson and was sold in Sears and Roebuck stores and also in their catalog as well well as by salesmen that would call on schools with bands. C.f. Conn continued to import guitars from Asia better known as postwar Japan up until 1987depending on date of manufacture and serial number on yourclassical model of a drifter as well as condition this guitar can be worth anywhere from $600 to $6000.the estimated amount of production of this model for me as years in Korea is about 20,000 the expected the survival rate of this model today is less than 700 plus the value has gone up substantially sInce the year 2000 I personally have collected over 200 of this model of the 700 survivingof which all are in excellent to mint condition if anyone is interested I have about 50 of these I would be willing to sell starting in about $4300 and up from there.

        1. Drifter d28 guitar says cg conn made in Korea pearl inlay this is a nice guitar got at goodwill for 30 bucks it was dirty cleaned it mint cond is it worth anything.

      2. Drifter Appraisal
        Matthew

        Hello,
If you’re still interested in knowing what the value of your Vintage DRIFTER Guitar is based it is in good condition, NO Cracks, Chips, Holes, Water Damage, Warping or any Major Defects the guitar is from as low as $325 up to $1835.00 if in Excellent Condition.
Many of these guitars are in extremely bad shape. This was mainly due to the low cost of Drifter Guitar s the actual quality and sound were dramatically over looked! There are a few prototypes that were made here in the USA and they are over z$5000 ,if in excellent condition! Great Guitars!!!

      3. C. G. Conn "Drifter" guitar appraisal
        12String

The “Drifter” line was the student-grade/beginner guitar line marketed by C.G. Conn from the early 1970’s until about 1981. As such they were basically comparable with the entry-level Yamahas.
For the record, they were well constructed for entry-level guitars and did not sound too bad given the fact that, like all entry-level guitars of the era, they had laminate tops.
As for their value, being a student-grade instrument with a laminate top, they really have no value as a vintage guitar.

I have a Drifter Acoustic Guitar with the oval label D25 with the starburst color and humingbird pick guard. I bought mine back in the 70s and am just starting to play it now…my problem is that it is very hard on my fingers and I thought maybe I could take it to a guitar shop and have the fret to string height manipulated but I can’t find the appropriate height. I looked on the Conn site and noticed their references jump from C to F, without any D listed. I know this is an old blog but you may still be out there.

Guitar is sunbust pattern. No buckle maks on the back. Original pick ups. Guitar was started in 1968, before Christmas and was finished in January after Christmas. I don’t know why that was important but the guy that sold it to me 20 years ago thought I should know. Any guess on a value? I paid 500 for it back then.

I too just bought a Drifter Les Paul copy, and I’ve been looking around the net for details.

It appears that the Drifter was a name used by Conn for several of their guitars, including our Les Paul-style electrics, some classical guitars, and even some twelve-strings.

Conn is better known for making student band instruments, trumpets and saxophones and the like. Compared to Selmer, Conn was more an entry-level brand. But one thing that I think is important is that compared with many cheaper guitars, Conn was a company devoted to making instruments that students could play and study on, not just trendy junk. the Drifter seems to be a rather traditionally made guitar compared to many cheap imports of the time- good action and intonation, real binding at the edges, etc.

Conn also owned Epiphone in 1953-5, and when they began making guitars again (in the 60’s & 70’s?) they seemed to be trying to make a quality product. Although it is safe to say Conn is more cheaply made, enthusiastic Conn acoustic owners compare them favorably with Martins and Taylors, . "Made in Japan. I purchased it new in the early 70s. Conn band instruments for awhile was trying to put out a superior quality guitar…and they did. At the time I compared it to Martins and Gibsons and chose it. Just sounded better. Georgeous guitar!! "

Nowdays Conn has merged with Selmer, it’s upscale counterpart, and boith of them are owned by the parent company of Steinway (the piano makers).

I found that with a bit of attention, I was able to set up my Drifter Les Paul with good action and intonation (though I had to mount the bridge backwards, screws forward, to do it). It has a good consistent action up and down the neck, and is very playable.

Since the Drifter is such a Gibson clone, I’d recommend that Driferites looking for parts consider trying Gibson or other Les Paul clone bridge parts.

    David Kelley

Can anyone comment on the value of a Martin 1921 018K. Appearance is pretty bad, a crack below the bridge has been filled, pick scratches (expected) and fair number of dents. the sound is wonderful!

    Thanks

Yes, i have come across a "24 Martin 018K here in St Paul, MN for the asking price of $2400. That is in a guitar store on consignment, so the real value of it is somewhere around there.. it is a sweet sounding guitar that used to be used for slide and has been pegged down to be fingerpicked..

: : Can you give me an idea as to how much a Yamaha FG12 301 twelve string guitar is worth? Thanks……..I paid $300 on ebay…….I consider it (quality) a bit below my fg 460-12s ……which retailed at $750 ten tears ago….I’d say new your fg12-301 would be about $700 bucks new today….used $300 is a good deal … not a steal though.
