  2. Pete Yorn's Song "On Your Side"
    Joel

Does anybody know where I can find the Tabs for the song "On Your Side" by Pete Yorn? I’ve checked allcountrytabs.com and they don’t have it…a lot of sites don’t have it.

i can’t guarantee that this is exactly what he’s playing, but it sounds very close. i’m pretty sure there’s more than one guitar in the recording, but i figured out a way to play it with one guitar that covers the prevalent melody. There’s two ways actually, one’s a little harder to play but i think it sounds a bit better if you can play it well. i don’t know the names of the chords, so i’ll just name them W,X,Y, and Z.

Easier Version (play chords in this order):

      W(x20230) X(000220) Y(200220) Z(320033)

for each chord you kinda hit once on the EAD strings and then strum the GBe strings…like you’re hitting the bass and then playing the guitar part. you might want to mess around with leaving the high e string open on chord Z –> Z(320030).

      (slightly more) Difficult Version:

      W(x20230) X(040220) Y(240220) Z(320033)

basically, all you’re doing is adding the A string 4th fret on those two chords (X and Y). it doesn’t seem like much but it’s a bit trickier to play. hint: for chord Y you might want to try using your thumb to hit the 2nd fret on the E string…DO NOT bar the whole second fret on this or any of these chords, those open strings are very important to the sound of the song. the same strumming instructions go for this version as the first. same also goes for the Z chord, try opening the high e string.

I believe the CHORUS is the same progression, but you might want to try altering the order of the chords a little until you find what sounds right to you.

i would recommend sticking with the Easier Version, it’s just less stressful and more fun to play. check out the song to help you with the rythym.

i owe a "thank you" to matt, your version jump started my versions. although i like mine better than matt’s, you all might want to check his out and decide for yourself and see which one hits your ear right.

      Enjoy.

please post feedback…opinions, changes, better versions, etc….let me know what you think.

Hey… the whole song is basically just Bm, A, G, and D, in that order. Sounds best to play the chords like so:
      Bm(x20230), A(x02230), G(320233), D(2×0230)

      -matt

        Joel,
I’ve wanted to learn it too, let me know if you make any improvements! hopefully it can start you? For the chorus I’m doing somethine with a G# and then G. I like 343 on the last three strings (respectively) along with what i have here, if you can hit it every once in a while while you’re playing the main part.

          glenn howard

          Joel, Will et al,

I think a lot of the beauty of this gorgeous song comes from the strange voicings he uses, reinforced by the synth swells and electric piano in the bridge. I looked at the liner notes for the album, and he uses a baritone guitar for that song, and I can hear there’s a low D in the tuning.

As with most songs, you can play an arrangement based on open chords that’ll sound great, but I got a bit bloody minded and tried to approximate all the voicings. I play it in an open D tuning (DADF#AD.) Muck around with this and you might find something you like :o) but it’s gonna be pretty hard to grab all the voicings that are going on there on one guitar, esp. the bridge ("I’m going out tonight…")

Awesome song though, and, sadly, a bit too relevant, if you know what I mean :o)

          Cheers
          Glenn.

: I need "paint it black" tabs, please from the rolling stones thanx
**** I dont have the tabs wrote out but I play it in the key of EMinor. Be sure to do a full up stroke every few measures to mimic the sitar sound. you can also play the sitar riff in the "b" and "e" string. let the small e string be a drone note. IN other words play the opening riff on the b string but hit the open e string below it at the same time to get that sitar sound.

Without tabbing the whole thing out. . .(and I didn’t throw on the mp3, so I might not have the right key (although singing along with it I think it is right):

          it is just C – G – Am – F….. that is about it

          pretty much:

(C)I can’t stand to fly, (G)I’m not that nieve, (Am) I’m just out to find, (F)the better part of me. . .

          then you have:
          it’s not easy(C) to be(G) me(F) C – C/B – Am

          then the bridge: Am – G – C – Am – F* F F – G

          I can’t stand to fly. . . .
*I’m not so sure about this F here. .. it is the only thing that sounds ok, and I really don’t have time right now to go find the song. . .hope this helps 🙂

          2. EVAN AND JARON TAB!! I FIGURED IT OUT!
            Rodney

I’m 90% sure this is it…obviously it may sound right but the guys may play it different…this is the only way to really do it with one guitar instead of their two. I’m not good with note names but the notes are:
            verse:
            A# – | 1 1 3 3 1 1|
            F – | 1 3 3 2 1 1|
changes with each line of the verse (listen for it)
and when it goes to "the time when you’ll be back….you’re comin back"
            play:
            B# – |3 3 5 5 3 3|
            chorus:
            F – |1 3 3 2 1 1|
            A# – |1 1 3 3 1 1|
when it gets to "I could brave a hurricane and…"
            play :
            | 5 5 7 5 5 5|
"still be standin tall when all the dust has settled"
            A#
"down" – |3 3 5 5 3 3| (strum once, let ring) "I can’t take the distance" (go back to the verse chords)
            That’s it.
the only way you can add that little d-string 3rd fret to 5th fret thing while strumming is to capo the 1st fret, that way you can use the finger you’d normally use to bar an F and reach that 5th fret. (you know the little riff that plays behind the strumming in the beginning on the d string: 3 5 5 3 3 5 5 3, just listen for it)
Obviously you’ll have to listen to it to get this just right….it’s hard to hear but when you’re doing the verse just move those two fingers up from the A# to the F and you can keep playing that 3 5 5 3 riff…it’s not hard to get, promise. If you need help with it, just email me and I’ll help ya, email me also if you think I made a mistake, cause if I did I’d like to know about it. Hope this helps!

  5. WOrst wedding Band EVER!!! Bugs Moran & The Trouble Boys!
    mhm

The WORST wedding Band Ever! Bugs Moran & The Trouble Boys:
This is a personal HORROR story I’m sharing so that you won’t have to endure the same on your wedding day!

My fiancé (now husband) and I had everything organized and planned for a lovely September wedding. We took months planning the day as every couple does and took pains to send very specific instructions to all of our carefully selected vendors (band, photographer, etc). We especially had specific instructions for the band since we had specific needs on volume control. The restaurant we were holding the wedding reception was a small historic Inn and would be seating other diners that night since our wedding party would fit in the main dining room.

We knew to expect some minor things to go wrong, but what we didn’t expect was the band to blatantly disregard all of our previously arranged instructions!
Brian Moran, the band leader seemed amiable when he approached us before dinner, and said that everything would be fine and that he would be able to control the volume without problem and that he would do whatever we needed.
Everything changed as soon as our guests were seated for dinner.

According to our agreed instructions, he was supposed to introduce us for our first dance as husband and wife. The band was also supposed to have learned ONE song for our special dance. I sent them a tape of the song a month and a half before the wedding date (15 days before they said they needed it). Instead of the proper introductions as I had plainly written out for him, he mumbled his own version, then just played the tape of the song I had mailed him weeks earlier. My fiancé and I were surprised and disappointed, but it was our wedding day and I felt it was a small thing to get angry over. But it didn’t end there. The entire night, the band played songs that were NOT on our requested play list! Out of the 25 songs we had specifically requested, we heard about 4 or 5 from the list!

Then, during several songs, their volume got too loud. When my fiancé, who was concerned about the other diners in the restaurant, asked Brian to lower the volume, Brian blatantly ignored him and kept playing. At one point, after several attempts by my fiancé, his best man and the restaurant manager to get Brian to control the volume, Brian intentionally shut the volume off completely in mid-song. Imagine a dance floor full of happily dancing wedding guests who were suddenly stopped in mid-song!

He even forgot (or intentionally ignored) the mother and son dance. We had planned for my fiancé and his mother to be introduced so that they could dance to "What a Wonderful World". Instead, the band just started playing the song at the wrong time. I frantically searched for my fiancé’s mother who happened to be out of the room. My fiancé and his mother made it to the dance floor halfway through the song.

But the unhappy story continues. After the cake cutting ceremony, we wanted the band to play a second song for us to dance to as a couple. I also wanted them to introduce us up to the floor so that we could have the microphone and say a few words of thanks to our guests for attending. They did nothing. They eventually played our 2nd dance song at the end of the evening as half our guests had left. Then they played it again, about 2 songs later. Today when I think about that time, I remember the out of town guests who I was unable to thank because of the band’s incompetence.

But that wasn’t enough for them. We had talked to the band about how often and how long their breaks would be. They had said about 10 minutes every hour and a bit longer for their dinner break. In actuality, they were very seldom playing music during the night. I usually found them at the bar or outside. There were times when everyone was done eating, but there was no music! They must have played around 16 songs, not including the tape they played of our dance song and the one song they played twice.

I was shocked and angry. I couldn’t understand why the band was directly going against what we had contracted for them to do and what they had promised to carry out. I couldn’t believe it was happening to me and on my wedding day! It was all I could do to try and not get upset in front of my new husband, my family and friends. But the damage was done. They had ruined my evening and the night was over. All I wanted to know was WHY? Why did they intentionally disregard everything we had wanted and discussed with them?

After the wedding, the bandleader, Brian had lame excuses for everything, twisting all the previous discussions, putting blame on others who had already left for home. He blamed the restaurant manager. He blamed us for being contradictory and vague in our instructions. Finally, he even had the audacity to blame his arrogance and "whatever" attitude on the tragic events of September 11th.

Then, he said his duty as a bandleader had nothing to do with our requests but rather to keep the dance floor filled. He said our songs were inappropriate and that he only used them as reference (even though he initially agreed to follow our song list). He knew what songs would please the crowd and those were the songs he played, even if I had specifically asked NOT to play those songs.
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. He had some twisted lame explanation for all of his inappropriate actions that night and he remained stubbornly unapologetic. I couldn’t believe it. I was dumbfounded. All I had wanted was some explanation and an apology. But I got neither!

Don’t get me wrong. The band sounds good — that is, when they are actually playing music. That was why we wanted them for our wedding. But don’t expect them to play what you want, when you want or even adhere to what was contracted. So if you’re looking for a wedding band who will take your requests seriously, a band who will listen to your instructions and not blatantly refuse to do as you’ve PAID them to do — then you DO NOT want this band!

I am thankful that the wedding ceremony (which the band was uninvolved in) was beautiful and memorable, but I would rather forget about the horrible reception that followed. The only reason I share this online is to help others avoid this terrible band and their arrogant, conceited bandleader, Brian Moran. If you need any further verification, you can contact me directly at [email protected]. I can even give you the name and number for the restaurant’s general manager who confessed to us after the wedding that he had NEVER seen a band completely disregard the bride and groom’s wishes during the reception.

So, to all those planning a wedding, I hope your special day is as lovely as you planned it. But if you want a band that will listen to you and follow through on your instructions as planned — pick another band!

DON’T hire the WORST Wedding BAND EVER: Bugs Moran & The Trouble Boys.

: This is a personal HORROR story I’m sharing so that you won’t have to endure the same on your wedding day!

: My fiancé (now husband) and I had everything organized and planned for a lovely September wedding.

: We knew to expect some minor things to go wrong, but what we didn’t expect was the band to blatantly disregard all of our previously arranged instructions!
: Brian Moran, the band leader seemed amiable when he approached us before dinner, and said that everything would be fine and that he would be able to control the volume without problem and that he would do whatever we needed.
: Everything changed as soon as our guests were seated for dinner.

: According to our agreed instructions, he was supposed to introduce us for our first dance as husband and wife.

: Then, during several songs, their volume got too loud.

: He even forgot (or intentionally ignored) the mother and son dance.

: But the unhappy story continues.

: But that wasn’t enough for them.

: I was shocked and angry.

: After the wedding, the bandleader, Brian had lame excuses for everything, twisting all the previous discussions, putting blame on others who had already left for home. He blamed the restaurant manager. He blamed us for being contradictory and vague in our instructions. Finally, he even had the audacity to blame his arrogance and "whatever" attitude on the tragic events of September 11th.

: Then, he said his duty as a bandleader had nothing to do with our requests but rather to keep the dance floor filled. He said our songs were inappropriate and that he only used them as reference (even though he initially agreed to follow our song list). He knew what songs would please the crowd and those were the songs he played, even if I had specifically asked NOT to play those songs.
: I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. He had some twisted lame explanation for all of his inappropriate actions that night and he remained stubbornly unapologetic. I couldn’t believe it. I was dumbfounded. All I had wanted was some explanation and an apology. But I got neither!

: Don’t get me wrong.

: I am thankful that the wedding ceremony (which the band was uninvolved in) was beautiful and memorable, but I would rather forget about the horrible reception that followed.

: So, to all those planning a wedding, I hope your special day is as lovely as you planned it. But if you want a band that will listen to you and follow through on your instructions as planned — pick another band!

: DON’T hire the WORST Wedding BAND EVER: Bugs Moran & The Trouble Boys.
      :

Bugs Moran and the Trouble Boys played at my wedding in May 1994. They provided great entertainment that everyone enjoyed. We sent them a tape of our obscure wedding song(I’ve Been Arrested by You from the Better Off Dead soundtrack). They performed it better than the original artist. My sister in law and brother in law also used them for their wedding in December 1995. We all think they are great and can’t believe this story.

They were to loud and when my mother asked them to please lower the music the bass player came after her with a knife! He had completely lost his mind. We called the state police and they had to take him away. Needless to say our wedding day was a complete disaster Not to mention that the saxaphone player took a huge poo in the middle of the dance floor when we were in the middle of our first dance, it was astonishing to see this unfold before us! Unless you’re into knives and defication this band should never be hired for any kind of occasion, EVER!

Interesting indeed. My beefy wife to be have been looking for a defication and knife party band for 8 months now! Now if this Moran person was Smart he would ad several small monkies to his little wedding show! Each monkey should be given a spatula and a handfull of choclate covered uppers that the monkies could devour at will! The uppers only enhance the "courage" of the beautiful little ape beasts and cause them to complete thier "wonderous task" in a most "brisk" and "fastidious way"! Imagine setting the monkies loose during the Cocktail hour? I certainly have a vision of this! The monkies could go around swating the shit out of all the guests! Just swating and beating the living daylights out of everyone and everything in thier path! Of course the monkies would be given monkey helmets to wear so they could nt hurt each other, that wouldnt be humane if the monkies hurt themselves! I know this may sound unusual but I was just at a wedding in Clifton New Jersey where this actually took place , and I’ll tell you it was a sight to behold! It left me and my beefy wife to be with some of the most fondest and teary eyed memories imaginable. Please Mr Moran Never stop doing what ever it is you do do so well at your performences
I hope Mr Moran is available for our wedding, God I could only hope,

You have a large problem, my dear. Bugs and the boys have been doing weddings for over 30 years. They’re one of the most professional, disiplined bunch of ‘nice guy’ musicians I’ve ever known. You left out a few details and/or exaggerated a few things now, didn’t you? Add to this a wee bit of distorted facts and what truly emerges is a picture of a vicious little spoiled wench who 1)picked the wrong restuarant(you need a private room for a wedding; 2) doesn’t know that the maitre d’ hotel runs the party; 3) foisted unrealistic expectations on the band; and 4) probably should have done a great band a favor and hired a DJ. You suck, to put it politely, lady. To try to ruin a good reputation is a great sin. Stop trying to be so controling. I feel sorry for your husband. Get over it!

        Aj

I’m reading this and laughing hysterically. I personally know Bugs Moran and the Trouble Boys and know they are fantastic musicians. I first met them at a neighborhood bar/restaurant in Brooklyn and to this day can call them my friends, Brian, Neal and Peter. I would travel anyway to see them. I’ve known them since the Mid 80s, have seen them play in NYC, LI, Brooklyn. I agree with the comments that this bride should have hired a dj and she could pick and choose any song she wanted. Live music is loud and she had the wrong venue!! If anyone has the chance to see this band, go and enjoy them!!! Luv you guys!!!
