I was wondering if you could give me some pointers, over how to read bass tabs and using them the right way.

: I hope that will help you a little bit
1 - / : this simply means to slide up to a certain note. if the tab has 5/7, you would play the note on the 5th fret, but then as that note is ringing, slide up to the 7th fret. alot of songs have this type of movement.
2 - \ : this simply means to slide down to a certain note. if the tab has 7\5, you would play the note on the 7th fret, but then as that note is ringing, slide down to the 5th fret. it's just to opposite of the one above this.
3 - b : this simply to bend a certain note on a string. if the tab has 5b, you would pluck that note, and also pull, or bend the string the amount needed. sometimes a tab calls for a "1/2 bend" which means you should bend it partially, and other times it calls for a "whole bend," which means you are to bend the string to the point where it sounds like the note next to it. for example, 5b (whole bend) means to make it sound how the 6th fret on that string would normally sound.
4 - p : this simply means to puff off a certain note. it the tab has 7p5, you would play the note on the 7th fret, but then have another finger on the 5th fret, so as you pull off, or take your finger off the 7th fret, it makes the sound of the 5th fret on that string.
5 - h : this simply means to hammer on a certain note. it the tab has 5h7, you would play the note on the 5th fret, but then have another finger ready for the 7th fret, so as you decide when to hammer on, or to "punch" your finger onto the 7th fret, it makes the sound of the 7th fret on that string.
6 - x : this simply means to mute a certian note. it is also mentioned as palm muting, because that's all it is. bascially, if you where to play a note on the 5th fret, pluck it, then slightly release your pressure, so if you were to pluck it again, it would make a dull sound. listen to the beginning of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana - that is an excellent example.
7 - v : this simply means to vibrate a certain note. if a tab said 7v, then pluck the 7th fret on that string, and smoothly bend the string in an up and down motion, giving it the wavy, vibrating sound.
