As far as tools go, there is a super-fast (javascript) chord generator with many options such as every possible alternate tuning and slash chords (i.e. choose your own bass note). Chords are given in the plain text form commonly used in tabs (e.g. "x32010" for C major) so you don't have to spend time waiting for pictures to load, and you can look through many chords in very little time. Alternative versions are often given for the same chord, but not so many as to be overwhelming! The form was particularly designed to be user-friendly and printer-friendly: there is even a print button, and you can edit before you print.

A small companion tool is the "fret-note converter", which does just that, in both directions, with any tuning you choose. In other words, it would tell you that "x32010" corresponds to the notes "CEGCE" (with standard tuning).

Another tool is the "capo helper", which quickly converts between capoed and uncapoed chords. (For example, you might want to know which capo you could put a capo on to make the chords in a certain song easier to play.) The idea is the same as the big charts you may have seen, but it's easier & less confusing to use, I hope. All results can be printed too.
