DO it the easy way, learn tab, start from there. First off you need to learn basic patterns and progress speed wise, if you start off playing boring stuff you'll loose interest, so go to tabcrawler.com and look up your favorite bands tabs. Make sure you bass is tuned start with the E string, which is the Fattest, most of the tunings are EADG, if not it'll state it in tabs etc. Also go pick up guitar world, they have alot of bass tabs/actual notation in them. Have fun and start easy. SCALES!
