I'm learning too but the strings are E, A, D, G from the fat one to the smallest one. E is called the bottom string even though its the highest one because its a lower note. The notes are A through G, after G is A again and every fret is a half step down except between E and F, and B and C ie. If you start on the fat string without any fingers its E, finger just next to the first fret its F, next one is F sharp or G flat, next one is G, next is G sharp or A flat, then A, then A sharp or B flat, then B, then C etc...
With the bass you only play one note at a time, not chords like an acustic. Use your finger to hit the strings not your thumb. I think thats about all I know. Good Luck.
