basic chords

i'd like to know all the basic chords

Got to learn the major scale first

The major scale has a special significance in our understanding of music. The intervals between the notes in a scale define the scale type. The starting note is the root note, (the note the other notes in the scale are compared against).

The intervals, starting from root, in half steps, starting with zero, for the major scale are 0, 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 12. If you can determine a shape on the fretboard that describes these intervals, you can use that information in many ways.

Some people decide to map out a scale over four frets, and break the neck up into three segments that repeat at the 12th fret. That way they need only learn three patterns for the whole neck. The problem with this method is that mapping out by frets doesn't make the lowest note in the pattern the root note of the scale being played.

This can be aleviated by memorizing the scale from one root note to the root note an ocave above it. When I apply this pattern, I notice that I'm able to pay more attention to the intervals and how each note I play is related to the root of the chord I'm playing over, or how it's related to the song's changes. To practice, pick a note on the low E, and find yourself a comfortable fingering for the major scale. (think do-re-mi...). Make the eighth note, your octave note, two strings down, two frets up. This compact pattern can be found quickly.

Thoughts ideas?
