I cannot figure out all this cryin about string breakedge. Look, if your playing alot anyway, you have to replace the strings religiously. ALL strings tone out within a week playing anyway. if you want the same sound you had a week pri , replace your stings. I want the best sound at all times when I am playing, not the "I wounder how long my strings will last"! Do your self a favor, replace them. just my opinion, but a damn good one.

I’ve got one with a maple neck and skunk stripe, it’s a big V shape and the body is cherry fotoflame. I bought mine a little more than a year ago for around 00,- but these are more expensive in Europe I guess. It was said that mine belonged to the last of the series. Ik love it so much I put a hotrails in the bridge position and never play my LesPaul anymore although it was supposed to be a much better guitar!
BTW if anyone knows a website dedicated to these guitars, please share it with us!

Have fun and hold on to that strat!

1.If your Floyd rests flat on the guitar’s body, then you should be able to bring each string to pitch before the Floyd begins to raise, which is what causes the pitch of the previous string to drop.
2.If the a space is routed out for the Floyd to drop into the body (recessed) then it’s a matter of A.tuning the previous string tightly to make up for the dropping. OR
B.Stabilizing the Floyd in the position that you want it to ultimately rest at, and tightening the strings until you get the balance.
It’s really very easy. Just think of it as tuning; when you tune, you adjust the tension of the string.
If you have any more ?’s, feel free to e-mail me.

I still have my SG Firebrand (with the Gibson name burned into the head) which I bought new in ’81. I paid about 50 Canadian for it then, but a couple of years later saw both the SG and the Les Paul versions for 50. It’s not a great guitar. The body’s too thin and light making it kind of ‘neck-heavy’. It’s nice for jumping around on stage with though. I’ve left mine unmodified, but the double-coil pickups that came with it are pretty lame.
These guitars were taken out of production quite quickly as they were probably considered a mistake. Maybe if I hang on to mine, it might someday be worth something (maybe 50 Canadian??).

I bought a set of String Saver String Saddles from Graph Tech about a year ago and I haven’t broke a string since. These saddles are impregnated with a teflon lubricant that is released when the string vibrates against them. This way the more you play, the more teflon is released, ensuring a lubricated surface under your strings for as long as you have them on the guitar. I live in Canada and these saddles were only about 0, god only knows how much money they have saved. I highly recommend them and they basically pay for themselves.

: : Tried a Jay Turser S.G. I was very impressed!! Necks are cut nicely, fretboad seemed healthy and the pickups
: : weren’t too shabby.I recommend these axes for any beginner, they’re built well.I almost bought the S.G., but I really don’t need another guitar.Check one out.
      : : Good Luck

: Buy a Jay Turser, swap out the pickups with new or used used USA-made pickups from Gibson, Fender, Ernieball, Seymour Duncan, and you’d have a pretty good guitar.

I swapped an old bass for one.Plays well , sounds good after minor truss rod tweaking… the pick-up advice is sound; replace ’em if you can afford to. Still slight fret buzz around 13th,14th fret E and A strings.Real nice to play for the price.
Its the SG copy I write of here; the gold top LP copy I looked at was rougher playing and had manufacturing flaws pretty much top to bottom. Cheers.

They gave her the Fat Cats album. You can hear the hard walls of the hospital room in the record. It made her so sad to hear the record, she couldn’t stand to listen to it so she gave it to me virtually unplayed. I still have it. She said that snoozer would show up at their house ad that they would go riding around in their Buick Roadmaster with him in the back playing his guitar. She said that he was the first person to play jazz on the guitar and the banjo. She also said he could sound like two guitars at once and that he could get a "pipe organ sound" out of his guitar. I assume she was referring to harmonics but i was unfamiliar with harmonics when she told me the story. She also said that Jack Teagarden(sp?)was in Los Angeles one time, drunk, and decided he wanted to hear Snoozer. So he got on the train, went to Louisiana, stayed drunk for most of the trip, saw Snoozer, sobered up then had his car sent out from California, and drove back. She said the record was just a shadow of what she heard in the back of the car and didn’t want to listen to it. She also said that Snoozer liked to drink, and would kind of crash around town at peoples houses. They would hear that Snoozer was in town, find him, and go for a drive.I know my grandfater liked to drink too,she never mentioned it, but I bet she drove while Snoozer and Scott(grandpa)passed a bottle. That’s all I know.Write if you hear more.

: : A friend let me borrow his "Gibson SG Firebrand". Did Gibson really make this guitar or is it a fake/hoax?
: : The serial no. has it being made in 1980. I’ve never
: : heard of such a guitar before now.

      :
: Yup. it’s real. They also made Les Paul Firebrands
      : too.

: It’s variant of the ’79 "The SG", which had a walnut
: neck and body with a ebony fretboard. The neck had
: the same width as a Les Paul In 1980 the SG Firebrand
: came out; instead of walnut, mahogany was used, the
: neck/fretboard was the same LP width with ebony. The
: choice of finish was either natural or antique mahogany. I;ve never seen the antique finish, I;ve been
: told it was mildly distressed…. The SG Firebrand
: was renamed the SG Deluxe.

Ok, now I’m confused. I have an ’80 Gibson SG made in nashville with "Firebrand "The SG" Deluxe" on the trussrod cover. It has the Gibson Logo in decal form, NOT burned into the wood, and a painted finish in a greeny-blue metallic finish. Any advice or dollar worth of this thing would be appreciated, and why doesn’t the Gibson website have any knowledge of the word "Firebrand"?

Ive got one just like yours!!!
nifty "gold-tone" foto-flame maple cap on whats either heavy basswood or light alder body, pearl pickguard, rosewood clay dots fretboard on heavily fotoflamed neck

i got mine ‘almost mint’ on ebay for US25 including fender gig bag. These are awesome guitars, big fat tone, loud acoustically, BIG FAT neck, like clapton or SRV neck profile only rounder… very sweet pickups too!
These are a steal, keep yours for a decade and i bet it will be worth a lot more than similar guitars made tha same year….

im perfectly happy with mine, as good or better than any other ’50th anniversary" 60’s reissue

: If anybody is pretty good at setting up a floyd rose (floating bridge variety) and has some tips to help me out, send them my way. My problem is that when I tighten one string, the rest loosen (as the pulling of one brings the bridge up higher, then loosens the others). So you have to tighten them, and they in turn loosen the one you just tightened. Etc. Etc.

: How do I get out of this loop-hole? I guess the bridge unit is supposed to be paralell to the guitar, which it is NOWWHERE near by the time I get it tuned.
I bought a Fender Floyd Rose Tremola System for my Eric Clapton Blackie and had it installed by a guitar Tech at a local music store. The guy installed it correctly but doesn’t know how to set it up any more then he can find his ass with both hands in broad daylight. The questions I have are these. Without the Floyd Rose all five springs are used in the back. After he installed it there were only three being used. Also how far back do you bring those screws that attach to the body of the guitar, because i don’t believe that the back of the Floyd Rose bridge is supposed to be flush against the body of the guitar. Secondly when you back the screws off the back of the Floyd Rose comes up off the body. Now I believe that it is supposed to be off the body but I dont know by how much. My problem was that when I applied a bend to the high e and b strings it would go sharp once the strings went back into position. The guitar tech gave me some bullshit excuse, I didn’t believe him. Now I’m looking for someone who has had experience setting them up. Because this guy took my money for installing it but he doesn’t know how to set it up. I do know that once you do get it set up for a certain gauge of strings that it would be unwise to change gauges. The trick is those screws you have two one for the low and one for the high end of the bridge. I believe they are supposed to be even, though I am not sure of that. I’ve fooled around with it and believe that those two screws are the source of the problem. I do know that I have no directions whatsoever on how to accomplish it and at the moment am stumped. Just because a guy calls himself a guitar tech doesn’t mean he really knows how do do everything, this guy certainly doesn’t. Find a qualified tech or a manual or directions on how to do it, without those your spitting in a strong wind and doomed to experiment. Good Luck John send me an E-Mail if you decipher the problem.

I always over tune and then when I bring the other strings to pitch it helps. SOme people use a wedge underneath the bridge itself to hold it in the position. It takes a little time but it is worth the effort!

I have been playing my Stratacoustic for nearly four months now – Sunday mornings at church and for weekend coffee shop gigs. I absolutely love it. I put Ernie Ball extra lights on it (.010-.050) and swapped the 3rd (wound) string for a solid. I needed to modify the bridge saddle in order to do this to maintain proper intonation. I then lowered the action slightly and it plays very close to my Stratocaster electric. The tone is very warm and bright and the action, well, virtually everything you’d come to expect from a Fender!

Before purchasing this guitar, I played a Kramer Ferrington which is of a very similar design. The Stratacoustic is now my main playing axe and I seldom ever touch the Kramer (which is a fine instrument in it’s own right) Enough said!

: : The Firebrand SG and "The SG" are the same guitar. They were made from 1979 to 1981. The only difference is,Gibson’s name is a decal on "The SG" and on the Firebrand it is burnt into the wood, thus the firebrand name. I bought a 1980 "The SG" new and is still one of my favorite guitars. I have an origanal download of the first advertisment for this guitar and will send it to you.

About the SG Firebrand, they were labeled by Gibson as a ES 335 s. I am have been real curious about these guitaa and have done some research on them. The Firebrand SG was called a ES 335 S and if yours is made from maple and has Nickel hardware (like the tail peice) and has regular humbuckers, etc, it is a (according to the Official Gibson Manual): ES-335 S STANDARD (ES-335 SOLID BODY) – double round cutaway maple body, black pickguard, mahogany neck, 22 fret rosewood fingerboard with pearl dot inlay, tune-o-matic bridge/stop tailpiece, 3 per side tuners, nickel hardware, 2 "exposed" humbucker pickups, 2 volume/2 tone controls, mini switch (for coil tapping), 3 way selector switch. Available in Natural and Sunburst finishes. Mfd. 1980 to 1983. If your model does not have a black pickgaurd it would have the Mohogany body and most likey has a brass nut. Here is what the Gibson manual says about the Deluxe Firebrand SG style ES-335-S: ES-335 S Deluxe – similar to the ES-335 S Standard, except features a mahogany body, bound ebony fingerboard, brass nut, TP-6 Fine Tuning tailpiece/tune-o-matic bridge, 2 Gibson "Dirty Finger" humbucking pickups. Mfd. 1980 to 1983. This is according to the Gibson manual. I have also the manual for serial numbers and the 1st and 5th numbers give the year it was made. Most are from 1980 to 1983. If you are sure it has the dirty finger pickups it has to be the Deluxe model as listed above and then it would have the mahogany body. The Les Paul Series FireBrand did not really look like a Les Paul either, but more like a Les Paul TV or Studio LP (both were the lower end models.) Firebrand was the name they gave them because the Gibson Logo was burned on rather than an inlay or silk screen.. Xhefri

I own a Johnson jm60. It is pretty good, light, and affordable. Don’t waste the money on the expression pedal, just use your own pedal board once you select the amp model you want. The axis line 6 is way too complex to use playing live – but would be a good investment for a studio to purchase. I use my jm60 for smaller audiences, smaller rooms. But more for it being light, not for the sound. I still much prefer my mesa boogie’s tone. I plan on buying a tech 21 60 watt combo soon – it’s even lighter, soundsgreat.

My favorite amp ( by far ) is my Mesa Boogie Single recto, 1×12 50 watt, all tube combo. This amp sings – clean or slightly overdriven. i dont use the gain in high settings – i use a boss pedal or ibanez tube screamer for that. But the Mesa 50 watt combo has balls, can punch though the mix with ease, and sounds like a fucking dream come true. worth every pennie ( about 120,000 pennies to be exact! )I paid for it. For larger rooms I bring along a 1×12 Mesa extension cab, and set it on the other side of the stage near the bass player’s rig. The house only has to mike either side, and I get a strong stage prescence. i funk/rock, fusion and contemp jazz ( 2 different groups ). This amp in second to none.

Just to add to the Confusion of Takamine, About that same time, they produced some Solidbody Electrics, The closest I can get to an age on them is somewhere between 1975 & 1983, I’m pretty sure after that they went Totally Acoustic. Any more accurate info on the solidbody escapade they did would be great!

Well, your first question was answered by Eddie G. As far as the second question, if you want the American Strat tone but can’t afford the American Strat price, the Mexi Strat is the closest for the least amount of money. Or, if you spend a little more then try the Japanese Strat. It is between the Mexican and the American. Good luck!

I would probably stay away from multi effect processors. Only because, for a beginner, they can get too technical. It can be too much. If you want to know what each effect sounds like, go to your local music store and play around with them. But, definitely buy something of good quality. Remember, you get what you pay for.

While we are on the topic. Gibson apparently also made some SG "Firebrand Deluxe" models which had a painted finish instead of bare wood. I’ve seen one on Ebay in a sunburst color, but has anyone ever seen a Silverburst?? I believe this would be the rare SG silverburst that I’ve heard tell of. Never even seen a picture of one though, so if anyone has one please submit.

I thought this was all about the boss GT3 vs. Digitech 2000 origionally?
oh well, i’ve had a digitech rp3 for the last year or so, and i’ve found its "user friendliness" to be lacking. It has some hard core shit sounds waiting to be discovered, but finding or creating them has proved a pain in the arse. I’ve also found that the tuner is inaccurate, and there is also a slight delay when changing between presets, of about 0.15 secs or so (enough to piss u off and make u change to early).

The boss gt3 – i’m creamin my pants, what can i say?

: Has anyone ever had a problem with those Fender Super Bullet strings breaking(E B)? I am a new strat player and and normally use D’darrio (?) 0.09 – 0.46 on a Les Paul and hardly ever break strings. Could this be just the brand, or is a fault of the hardware… namely those string saddles … a few hours of casual use ain’t good enough, especially being a light player who doesn’t sweat. Thanks for your suggestions.

i use to use bullets and they suck. try using ernie balls. when i went from one to the other my string breakage occurs only if i leave them on long enough to get rusty.(i never leave them on that long, so i never break strings anymore.also ;where the string passes through the bridge plate ,sometimes because the saddle is so far forward, that the string comes in contact wit the plate before it passes over the saddle. in thi case, the string has a kink in it before the saddle, thus, undermining the integrity of the string ,by elongating the hole in the bridge plate, the string will only come in contact with the saddle, this will greatly reduce breakage.hope this helps, if not ,i can fix it for you.contact me at,[email protected] joe.

Buy a Jay Turser, swap out the pickups with new or used used USA-made pickups from Gibson, Fender, Ernieball, Seymour Duncan, and you’d have a pretty good guitar.

I am doing a target marketing project on acoustic guitars and Takamine is one of the three I chose to research. I was wondering if there is any information about the history and about current sales in Takamine guitars, preferrably Jasmine. If that is possible, I would be forever grateful. Thank you!!

I obtained a Les Paul model from Junior Cain in Old Saybrook Ct. I have totally given up on using my Powerhouse Strat for this one. I play it thru my Roland JC-120 and the tone and playability of this JT is comparable, if not better than, any gibson or fender that I’ve played. When you get the chance to get one grab it you’ll never regret it. I’m presently trying to find a Cherry red JT-135 ( es-335 copy) with a black pickguard. I know the power and sustain will be above reproach. Good luck and don’t hesitate to buy a JT. Ray

: I have recently aquired an electric guitar, its a les paul copy by Jedson. Its black with black and white trim. a black scratch guard with black and white trim, twin humbucker pickups with a three way selector. It has a dark neck with silver frets and what looks like mother of pearl fret markers (fake or real, im not expert enough to know)again the neck has black and white trim. The serial number on the back of the neck is 1000213, it says made in Japan, and steel adjustable neck. If thats not enough info, I can e-mail pictures to people who think they may have an idea.

: Does anybody know anything about this guitar, if its good quality, what you would pay for it, (Its NOT for sale though, it was a birthday prezzy from my girlfriend).

      : Cheers!!

      : Dave

I’ve just bought a similar guitar but with more of a "natural wood" finish. I’m a beginner who just fancied learning to play. Mine is about 25 years old but in great condition. I bought it from a pretty well respected bloike who repairs and builds guitars. He told me that Jedson produced some of the better quality les Paul copies and I’m very pleased with mine. I wouldn’t get too worried when people "knock" these instruments, if you like the feel of it and enjoy playing it I don’t see what the problem is. If I win the lottery and can afford the genuine article, then maybe! However, I suspect that unless you are an experienced and skiullful guitarist, you wouldn’t even notice the difference. I did read that Dave Gilmore plays some Jedson guitars so I think we could be in good company. Please feel free to get in touch. Bye. Mike.

: Well first pick up that Zoom and walk out the back door and hold it firmly in your hand just slightly over your head and throw that thing as far as you can and then run out and buy a Digitech. Just kidding !!! Well its kinda up to you if distortion is all your looking for a single pedal is the best and cheapest way. But remeber try B4 you buy. There is many hundreds of them made and they all sound different. I have a Digitech GSP 21 its got unlimited effect mixing on it but I dial up #9 and did a little fine tuneing on it in the setup and made my own distortion thing. I needed a little fuzz and much tone with a bit of a crunch and it works great. But all of this might be in what guitar your playing and the amp your going into with. I also have a Dallas Fuzz Face Arbiter its a stomp box you can buy. Hendrix used one. But you even have to be careful buying one of them as from what I read they use different transistors from time to time and the germanium transistors sound the best but are hard to get. Zoom has never been one of my choices in effects and I am sure they make some folks happy just not me. I owned one once and had the same problem your going threw I gave the thing away and started with an old Digitech GSP 5 man that thing was old. But it sounded better to me on the distortion side than that Zoom. And then I found the GSP 21 and I have two GSP 21’s and two GSP 21 Pro’s. I just started buying them up as they are getting hard to find and you cant even order replacement footcontrolers anymore as of this year. But they sound great. Ebay is the best place to find any musical gear I nearly went broke my first few days in Ebay.

      Dear Shawn;

I am new to this site, but, I am not new to the Floyd Rose bridge. Tonight I have written, in responce to two different questions, detailed instructions for re-stringing and tuning the Floyd Rose bridge. Soneone else wanted to know how to balance the bridge and I didn’t address that, but I will if you haven’t already solved this problem in the next two or three days.

Leave a message on this site if you still need this info and I will give it to you.

I’ve read some great reviews (and less that glowing ones too) about the Digitech RP-3 and I’d side with those that found it lacking.

Most of the effects are good however this is the 3rd one I’m trying in as many weeks.

The tuner on the pedal isn’t at all accurate and it’s very difficult to "lock in" on a pitch. The readout jumps around a lot and makes using the tuning feature totally impracticle. (checked it with friends who had tuners at the same time and theirs all agreed….my RP-3 wasn’t even close to correct pitch)

I also encountered "random" problems in bank and program modes. On several of the settings I’d come across one that produced an electrical shorting sound. For sure it wasn’t an intended effect as there was no variation to the sound on any of the strings.

So in summary I wasn’t very pleased with the RP-3.

With regard to the Boss pedal (model escapes me but it’s the one that is in the same price range as the RP-3) I tried it out tonight and really liked it.

The wah wah pedal has more of a punch to it than did the RP-3. The compression and tube sound was much fuller than the RP-3.

I had no problems with the presets and as for accurate tuning, it was consistant with other electronic tuners I tried.

So after trading in my 3rd digitech I think I’m staying with the boss pedal.

Incidentally, after taking some time to EM the digitech support line and trying to accurately describe the same problems I’d had with 3 pedals in a row I received a brief answer "we aren’t aware of problems similar to those you described".

Though the response was "reasonably" prompt (within a week) I think for the money I’ll stay with the Boss pedal.

: Not quite, the humbucker will sound right but unless you have a very high output pickup the single coil position will be thinner and smaller sounding than a good conventional single coil. A Seymour Duncan JB is an example of a humbucker that taps well.

This guitar (Washburn CS-740) has two duncan designed humbuckers and a single coil on the middle position. In the humbucker mode it is louder than on the single coil mode. But I think this is normal. And the single coil, specially the neck one, sounds pretty good, very bright. How can I determine the model of the pickups, and do you have more information on this guitar? I couldn’t find on the net. Seems to be some kind of special edition. Thanks.

also the only way i could get my feeble brain around chords is to work out the diatnic triads for C major scale and then just transpose them to all keys
there is a set way on matter what the key signature that the chords are constructed eg maj min min maj dom

be careful callouses form when you first start playing and you should take care notlet them build up to much as they can become very painful. they build from the bottom and spread out almost cone shaped the sharp bit on the bottom so when you press down it can feel like a thumb tack sticking in to your finger tip not good make sure that you use a pumice stone very gently with plenty of soap when you wash your hands (only a couple of times a week)this will take the callous off and make your playing soooo much easier, dont forget the hand cream every day. eventualy your fingertips will harden up all over. look after your hands.

Hello. I’ve been playing Digitech products for about 10 years. I’ve owned 3 pedals and two processors and I have never had a problem. Right now I’m using a 50 Digitech RP-3 and it does everything I need quite well.
The boss I can’t help you with, sorry.

I had ben using a Digitech RP3 for about one year before I bought a BOSS GT-3. Of course the RP3 is not fully comparable to more recent Digitech product but here is my opinion: Digitech RP-3: unbeatable pitch shifter and harmonizer (more scale than the GT-3 and cleaner). You can pitch bend full chords with the expression pedal with surprisingly good results. The modulation effect are quite good and maybe fuller than those on the GT-3. BOSS GT-3: Much better amp simulations (even though in reviews it is not even a strong point). Much better distortions. Other outstanding features include the pickup simulator and the preset equalizer settings that you can use to start a new patch. Plus a bunch of other toys (analog synth. modules, etc…). Overall I would go with the GT-3. I was not impressed by the amp simulation in more recent Digitech models (GNX line). But those were short demos from the Web.

You can look at the Jackson website for more information on their guitars. Just make sure you play lots of guitars before you decide on one. My friend bought a guitar that shape once because he thought it was cool and he found out it was very uncomfortable to play while sitting down.
      Good luck.

: Include brand name ,playing style, and weather you play out with it (gig).Let your voice be heard.

I have a Johnson Marquis JM60. I really like it. Like Shane, I used to use lots of gear to get lots of sounds but now it all happens in a combo. A fairly light one at that. It doesn’t sound exactly like the original classic tube amp it’s modeling, but it’s damn close, and for the money and portability I think it’s great.

I found it to be a bit dark sounding to my ear and chose the Taylor 410 instead (now the 310), but you really have to use your own ears and see how you like it.

What is the buzz on this guitar? : : I found it to be a bit dark sounding to my ear and chose the Taylor 410 instead (now the 310), but you really have to use your own ears and see how you like it. The D-15 has a very unusual tone, it is strong, even, smooth, very warm and rich, it is complex and has allot of texture. You must hear it to make a decision. Everyone won’t choose but very many will. It is good enough to go through the effort of listening to one. I was prejudiced against it due to it’s plain all mahogany exterior, the moment I heard it wild horses could not have kept that guitar from me. I just love it and have grown to enjoy its simple dark look. It is very well made and the Martin 300 hardcase that comes with it fits it like a snug glove. It comes with Martin SP+ strings and the action rivals an electric. Look at it’s reviews on Harmony Central there are over 30 and not one negative comment. Iceing on the cake is Martins warranty. This thing is also avail in like six variations. I am a very picky customer and this thing thrills me more every single day. They sell for under $600.00 at allot of dealers. You can’t go wrong here!

: : Your talking about coil tapping, and its not just on one pickup, its on any pickup you wire for coil tapping. WIth the right pickup it could very helpful.

      :
: Interesting… Then, if you wire a pickup for taping, on the single coil mode it will act *EXACTLY* like a silgle coil pickup, and the same with the humbucker mode?

Not quite, the humbucker will sound right but unless you have a very high output pickup the single coil position will be thinner and smaller sounding than a good conventional single coil. A Seymour Duncan JB is an example of a humbucker that taps well.

: Hi Drew, Thanks for answering. I live in Shepparton Victoria, what about you? What do you know about these pedals, Another guy told me they were shit. I haven’t played one yet but I will give it a real workout in a couple of days. What do you use? See ya Ando

Well hey their Drew, your question is a bit vague. Their are hundreds of different effects pedals on the market. You really get what you are paying for. If you buy say a 0 Rogue pedal, its going to suck compared to say a 50 pedal, or even a pedal that is like 0, like a Boss. I own 5 pedals right now, I am about to buy another one. They are all useful, but I think you should look for maybe a effects processor. I really don’t like the sound of processors, but for the money a begginer with effects, could learn what every little effect does, so you know what you want when you get something better. Get something that will last you like 2 years or so, maybe the Boss Me-30, well built, and sturday. It goes for about 30 american. Don’t be cheap with gear, you will only lose money by doing this

If anybody is pretty good at setting up a floyd rose (floating bridge variety) and has some tips to help me out, send them my way. My problem is that when I tighten one string, the rest loosen (as the pulling of one brings the bridge up higher, then loosens the others). So you have to tighten them, and they in turn loosen the one you just tightened. Etc. Etc.

How do I get out of this loop-hole? I guess the bridge unit is supposed to be paralell to the guitar, which it is NOWWHERE near by the time I get it tuned.

      to quote jim grainger:

"Keep your instrument in an environment that is between 40 and 60 percent relative humidity. Especially during the winter months, when cold, dry air is heated, resulting in warm air that is even drier. Necks can warp, and bodies can crack when they are too dry. Use a hygrometer to determine the relative humidity in your home or studio"

Ok, I have hung all my expensive guitars on my wall for about 0. Got wall hangers for 0 each, there is no reason to pay more. You should put them in a dry room, with plenty of air, not a closet or something. Make sure the temp doesn’t change from 72 degrees ever. If you live in a real musty damp place, buy a dehumidifier to keep your guitars dry. Remember if you live in say Florida, you can’t avoid buying a damp house.

Look into all the Guild’s, and Martin’s in your price range. You might be able to get a Gibson Song Bird at that price as well. Just go to a music store, and see what you like, with that kind of money you could get something good

Yes my friend, I happen to have one and it has performed to my best expectations. I’ve used it for guitar (recording and live), live sound re-enforcement, and vocals. It’s THE all in one box. You can get as deep as you want into the effect parameters or just use it right out of the box. You will need a foot controller if you plan to use it live. Peace

Currently using Yamaha 4 trk recorder, miking 6 and 12 string acoustic Taylor 714 and 755, using Shure 4.1 mikes, but not quite able to get back the sound that comes out of my guitars. Have an AMP pre-amp, not using any effects. what can I do to improve sound quality short of going digital? Mostly fingerpicking without fingerpicks, ballads and instrumental.

Ihave a 6 string Lyle that I got used in 1970. They are/were a fairly low cost beginner/intermediate guitar. My Lyle has mellowed beautifully and now sounds great. These guitars were made in Japan and they even made an electric Lyle about which I know nothing. Either hang on to the Lyle, or if you’d consider selling it, contact me and maybe we can work something out.

How can I get the right combinations for the Noel’s solos (or something same)?. I bought the ZOOM505II a few days ago and I’m really desperate.

I can’t found a good one (effect) for play the solo of "Life forever" – or any of his solos – (and the ritmic parts, shit).

If anyone can give some good combinations of famous solos thank you a quite a lot. I’m learning a little of the patches and all that, but I can’t get a good sound (always sound a bit of echo).

      : Hi,

: i’m new to the guitar world and i want to learn to play it. I have thought of buying an acoustic guitar for 00 at much, but i don’t have any idea of which one to buy. I like the ones with the cutaway and the Epiphone PR100C is one i like a lot. So, maybe you can recommend me a good guitar. thanks a lot

      : Jorge

You just have to try the guitar to see what you want. If you are new to playing you can take a couple of lessons at your local music store and try different guitars at your lessons. An acoustic is great if that is what you want, but it is much easier to learn on an electric guitar. Try as many guitars as you can before you buy one and buy the best one you can afford. It will last you the longest. It also depends on what you want to play. Remember, it does not really matter what it looks like, buy the one that is easiest to play and that sounds the best will give you the most enjoyment.
      Good luck,

Since you’ve been looking for two weeks I’m sure you’ve come across a Squier Strat and Fender Strat. The squiers are great for beginning if your on a tight budget. The upsides to squiers are that you can get them at low cost and you can get packs with amp, tuner, strap, picks, the works. The downsides are that they are foreign made, which generally takes away from the quality of the wood. The tone , or the way it sounds, is also nothing like a Fender Stratocaster. The best guitars are generally American made. The tone you probably will not even notice a difference in until you’ve played for a while. All Fender’s are not American made also. Fender guitars which are American, Japanese, Korean, and Mexican made go for anything between 250 to 2000 bucks. The Mexican and the Japanese are the best foreign made Fenders. Also if you are on a VERY tight budget then consider a Yamaha Strat copy. These go for around 100 bucks. Some other good guitars are Gibson, which are DEFINITELY overpriced unless you live in a big city with competing music stores that can afford to chop the price down about a thousand bucks, I bought a Gibson Les Paul Standard Lite for a thousand bucks off the list price, the reason that these are so overpriced is that they are handmade in the US. A division of Gibson is Epiphone these guitars have a lot of the Gibson look, but the tone is not even comparable to the Les Paul, I don’t think you’ll notice this though until you’ve played for a while. The Epiphone’s are definitely affordable, too. Any more questions just email me at [email protected]

Well the tenor is in Bb, and the alto is in Eb, at least I think. They should know what key their horns are in. Anyway, a Bb for the tenor is a C for you guys, and an Eb for the alto is a C for u guys. From there, it shouldn’t be hard. But make sure I’m right about Bb and Eb.

Hmm.Even-though I have a good ear,I too find it tough
to write or play tunes that only have a melody line.
I had to do this for a drummer friend for mine. Most
melody lines revolve around one tone, thats where ear training comes in.But by playing the melody on guitar
you might be able to find the note that is most common.
That could be the root of the chords in question. After
that, try to find the arpeggios in the melody, this could
help you find the chord quality(ie.major,minor,7th ect.
      ect.)
      Hope this helps

      Hmm.Don’t know much about schallers,but i’ve experience
with locking trems. I don’t think the tuners are the
problem,it’s the nut.Sometimes the strings get caught on the nut because by "diving" down the strings tend to
move laterally as well as horizontaly.Talk to your
guitar tech. about widenind the slots in the nut, this
      might help.

you don’t need to know any scales. if speed is the only concern, it’s probably best not to know anything about music. music woud just get in the way. if you just stick to one note, you could probably play a lot faster anyway. in fact, you probably don’t need all those strings. just take off all but one, rip out the frets, and thrash away. maybe you’ll set a world record or something.

You call that quick and easy? for the time it would take to wrap strings i would rather spend the 4 dollares for a new set:

There may yet be a quick and easy shortcut to keeping gunky, corroded strings from occuring too soon. I used to have this problem until I tried, out of desperation, the "alcohol bath".
: This requires the of loosening all strings on the guitar and very carefully sliding aluminum foil under the loosened strings, with special care not to break any of the foil while making sure that it covers everything from the nut to the bridge. A generous application of common rubbing alcohol (I prefer *isopropyl* to *ethyl* for sheer alkalynity)with the use of a thin cotton cloth rubbed all up and down the strings, removes almost all the oxides, acids and any substance from the hands and fingers. Again, be careful not to tear the foil and allow the alcohol to seep onto the neck and body. I’ve done this for a long time and it hasn’t failed to be of benefit. It’s worth a try and nothing’s lost but about an hour if it does fail. (I can’t help but be ill-at-ease thinking about the use of WD40 over such a wide area of a guitar, despite the recommendations of more experienced specialists.)

Hmm.Maple necks tend to make the guitar sound brighter,
where as rosewood necks have a darker, chunkier sound.
I’ve found that maple necks offer little resistance
when bending strings and playing fast. But rosewood has a bigger, beefier, tone.Ebony is my favorite,it’s right in between the two. Maple does have one flaw.As the neck gets worn, the finish will come off or it’ll need
to be replaced.Rosewood necks are usually "slabbed" on
top of a maple or ash neck and can be serviced easier.
Both are good for different reasons.
      Good Luck

I’ll be buying a new guitar soon (probably a Mexican Strat). Is there really much difference that I–a serious amateur w/ good ear, but relatively new to guitar (2 yrs)–am likely to notice between a rosewood vs. maple fingerboard?

Also, is there a better guitar out there than a Mex Strat for that little money (like, something with the sound and versatility of an American strat, but cheap)?

Hey. Have you considered the Seymour Duncans Hot rails? I’ve got one in my Peavy strat copy and it sounds real good. It has a nice overdriven tone and a good clean tone as well. It cost eighty bucks and it’s single coil size. It requires no routing on your strat. It’s a nice sounding pickup, so you may want to put it on your candidates list. Hope this suggestion helps any.

I had trouble using a GK2 on FR equipt Jackson. As I recall, the distance between the saddles and the gk2 was too far apart on my guitar. It was close though. I did manage to get it to work, but it was unstable, resulting in some undesirable tracking.
I settled on installing it on my strat.
Try it out on yours by taping it in place to see how well it works.
      Good Luck
      Ron

: Thinking about putting a gk-2 pick-up on a guitar with a FR trem, anybody used this with a vg-8 or gr-series synth? Will it work okay? How about vg-8/vg-88 any point in upgrading?

guitar center use to sell them by the boat load for around 300 bucks.
Its a cool guitar though. I sometimes play one at the facility i work at. It’s a honey burst. Cherry MIGHT be worth a couple of bucks more.
It’s not rare but it is a solid axe. might as well enjoy it.

No need to rout out the body. I wanted to get a good strat sound without the noise so i went with Seymour classic stacks.
They are loud, clean and noiseless. seymour make another one like it that has a crunchier tone, I don’t recall the model name, but it is a "stacked" pickup.
I’ve used the setup for 8 years now, without a problem.
      Hope this helps.

: I have agreat 79′ Les paul Custom that unfortunately has had the varnish stripped right off of the back of the neck after much playing. I am scared to destroy my love but want to stop the sweat that enters into the wood. Any advice on re-finishing the neck?

I restore strats teles and les pauls.
In order to remove any oils you can use acetone
on a rag try a tiny amount first like in bottom of neck
rub from head to heel after you have seleceted a safe spot to test this on first! after you have wiped this down let dry it will dry asap acetone disapates quickly
it also removes oils. Gibson les pauls have nitrocellulose lacquer as finsihes Id go back to using nitro only this can be found at fine wood stores in spray cans. make sure its nitro not urethane ect you can mask off the front of the fretboard use drafting tape as masking tape will lift lacquer not fun…
after youve covered the fretboard spray the lacquer at about a foot away misting it on at first the idea is to get a gloss finish without runs so do this sparingly.
let it dry a day or untill smell is gone you can take 1000 grit wet or dry sandpaper and sand out orange peel
ect.after its well dry that is. Good luck with your instrument if you need any help email me at [email protected] ill be glad to help thanks Frey Guitars

I am having a VERY hard time with one of my guitar projects. I have a ash body, I am using " Color-Tone" concentrated liquid stain. The is to stain it, and then spray it with a clear finish, then add some graffics…in this case flames. Here is the problem…the clear will not stick to the stain. It peals off. My only choice now is to completly sand it to wood again (SECOND TIME) and restain it and try once more. Any help or advise you would like to offer? This is really a drag! The first time I stained it, I used a wax type finish, which I know now was wrong. I used lacquer thinner to go over the whole guitar to remove all the wax stuff, but it hasn’t worked. The clear still peals…so I sand it off…Please advise me on what I can do to avoid having to sand it a 3rd time! Thanks and Seasons best!

I was hoping that someone could give me a hand with replacing my pickup selector. I’ve got an Ibanez ex series electric guitar circa 1991 that I am replacing the pickup selector in. The one I removed was oem from Ibanez and the one I am replacing it with is a fender part. I have a single coil in the neck and middle position with a humbucker in the bridge. The connections on the two selectors are not laid out the same and I was wondering if anyone could give me some suggestions on how to wire the new selector so that I can have the same pickup combinations as the origional. The combos were Bridge, bridge+mid, mid, mid+neck, neck. I am not schematic literate so any help would be appreciated.

: : : I say if you’re having a real hard time with sweat eatin’ up your strings, try some stainless steel strings. I hate changing strings and at one time I had too many guitars. The stainless strings, (ovation brand) lasted on my Guild Starfire 5, for four years of intermitent play. They don’t sound as good as new regular steel strings, kinda’ toned down a bit, but they don’t get worse over time, like the regular strings do. If you prefer regular strings, It also helps to wipe the neck off after each session. They will last a lot longer with some simple care.If all else fails, try playing your guitar on top of your barn during a lightning storm. You won’t have to worry about strings any more.

: : I agree with wiping your strings off. If you produce that much sweat, wipr them off between
: : songs. But DON’T USE WD40!!!! I have used it before and residue will build up on the neck
      : : over time.

Those "horrible" callouses are what all guitarists look forward to developing because it is only then that your fingers stop bleeding and you don’t suffer pain every time you play.

I have one also. Believe it or not the "frying pan" is not worth a great deal of money! I was shocked to discover that fact given their distinct place in the history of the guitar. maybe 1000-1200 on the high end. Notice the "h" in the name too instead of the "k" it is an older model. Have a National tricone style 2 round neck that I was pleasantly surprised to find was worth a great deal more than the lap steel.

Mabeye a epiphone lp special, but thats about it…even the les paul standard epi will cost you more…I have a transparent blue model standard, paid 00 for it new, there nice, but save your 4164380, and when you get around 00, look for a gibson LP studio used in a good music shop…you wont find anything near new in that price range, but should find a decently cared for used model for under 50.

Well, I have a strat (actually 3), a Gibson SG and a epiphone les paul standard.

For rock, my pick is the SG, very verstile and the lightest of the bunch too…If your not playing in a band then look at a les paul (if you can afford it). The strat deluxe is very nice too…I have a SRV model, a american standard and a 50’s model…all are very different in playability and sound. But is I had to pick one guitar, the SG would be it…

: Why the hell do we need record companies, and distributers (music stores). Artists could be selling whole albums over the web for , and make a bigger profit, than if there were those 2 middle men. All these bands need is someone who could record good quality computer recordings, and advertise them over the net.
      ———————————————-
Isn’t this pretty much what record companies are doing but just without the computer thing… i mean connections to studios, advertising and distribution.
the middle men will always be there, you can’t hope to do everything yourself, and theres no goddamn way anybodys gonna do that stuff for free.

I have the Deluxe American series Stratocaster with schaller tuners. When I press the bar down some strings are sharpening in pitch, and when those strings are bent up a step the pitch lowers again. Anyone got any ideas ? I’ve adjusted the screws at the top of the pegs but it still won’t stay in tune when I use the trem bar

Hey mate!! I have a super 80’s too, and I dont know too much about it, but I will give u a little history lesson on it. A while back Ibanez got the bright idea to mimic Gibson’s style of the Les Paul, and that they did, until the guitar got too close to the design of the Les Paul. Ibanez ended up getting sued by Gibson over this guitar. I dont really know anything else, except that a buddy of mine @ a shop said that he would pay me two grand for it, so yea, it’s expensive!!! If you know anything else, please email me!!!!!

FOUR YEARS????? you left strings on your guitar for 4 years??? you must not play much.

: I say if you’re having a real hard time with sweat eatin’ up your strings, try some stainless steel strings.

Make sure you pay attention to the pickups. They will dictate the majority of your sound and tone. Personally I like Seymour Duncan and Dimarzio. These are usually found in the better Ibanez, Jacksons, and ESP’s. Make sure you play whatever you choose through your personal equipment so you get the best idea of what it will sound like. All of these guitars can be bought with a fixed bridge. Good luck.

In reference to tuning the floyd rose, one real important thing is making sure the tremelo is evenly balanced. To do this is pretty easy, first take the guitar and look at the bridge horizontally at the low E side, if the bridge sits evenly (front and back), then the tremelo is balanced. But if the bridge is sitting higher in the front or back then it is out,to fix the problem you have to take the back off where the springs are,if the back of the bridge is high then you have tighten the springs, take a large phillips head screwdriver and tighten the screw that is relative to that side of the bridge, turn no more than one full turn at a time, doing both sides(that is the low E side and the high E side each time),then check to see if the bridge sits even to the body ,if one side is even and thr other side isn’t then adjust that side until it is even with the body.with the tremelo being evenly balanced, the guitar should stay in tune a little better. If you have new strings you will have to stretch them first.

Hey Mike whats your budget? There are lots of great guitars out there so I can only give you my opinion.
I have been playing Carvin guitars for 15 years, the first one I bought used and the second two I bought new.. I also have a 1983 Fender American Strat that I bought used a couple of years ago. And I bought and sold a Gibson Les Paul Custom after I played it against the Carvins. I like to see some bang for my buck and you can buy a nicely adorned carvin thats made in America and is consistantly rated high by the guitar magazines as far as value ,tone, and worksmanship. They are great for Rock,Industrialstrength metal,Jazz and blues. I havent found anything that mine couldnt do well for alot less money than alot of brand name axes.
I love my strat but its just not versital enough for my band. Mine has three single coils so I’m shure if you got one with a humbucker (for rock) you would probably be fine. The Les Paul looked great but was to heavy and didn’t sound as good as my Carvins yet lots of folks lovem. They are pretty much the International symbol for Rock. If I could have my pick of expensive guitars right now I would probably buy a Tom Anderson next they are versital and well made but expensive. If I were you I would check out Harmony Central guitar section and read some reviews. Also Check out Carvin Customshop and check out their goodies They are a Mail order company but dont let that bother you You can try the guitar out for ten days and if you no like send it back!

: : can someone help me chose an amp. I am going to buy a epiphone les paul and like the sound of groups like oasis and nirvana. i was thinking of getting a marshall but i am confused on all the different types

: As well you should be my friend, you have just entered guitar pergatory. what kind of amp is right for you?
: A marshall may be fine for you but I would buy one with a tube pre-amp and a tube power amp. I dont like the (valve-state) stuff with the solid state power section.
      : Bad Marshsall bad!
: Whats your budget buddy thats an important place to start. I would play a bunch of new stuff and find something you like at least as far as tone goes. Then head for a consignment store and see of you can find a used one in good condition or something similar. You may want to refraize the question so you get some marshall owners making recomondations. Or ask if any one knows what kind of amps those two bands you listed liked to use. I personally like Mesa Boogie but it might be a little expaensive for your fisrt amp.
: Then again buying an amp you end up hating and selling for a loss and then buying a Mesa Boogie or your personal equivalent to that could be much more painful and expensive than buying a good amp in the first place. I think the Amp you buy should have a great high gain disortion channel. I hear people talking about this pedal and that pedal all the time. But this means their amp is missing the core building blocks of great tone.

To me,all Marshalls are about the same. Check out Soldano. Marshall is good for 1 sound. Notice I didn’t say tone. You have to wonder why an amp manufacurer KEEPS comming out w/new models. A 50 watt Soldano head will EAT Marshalls. My Atomic 16 could ALMOST keep up w/my buddies 100w stack. But more versatile. And how often do ya need 100 watts?!

Most,(all) Gibbys are not worthy of the name. If you HAVE to have a Gibson, spend the 4164380 on a PRE ’67. AS for new,McInturff makes the closest thing to a pre ’67 Gibby (not that he’s trying to), in quality /sound and value.

If ypu are not sure how have it done. Make sure they use the string gauge your comfortable with. Make sure it is properly calibrated.
I use a trem-setter on a Jackson Professional with no problems. You can get them from Stew-Mac for about 30 bucks. Required a slight mod though

Strings are cheap for electrics. Change often.
However acoustics strings, (bronze, phosphor bronze ect) start going bad the moment they are made. Try to buy the freshest strings possible. On my Breedlove and Takamine, I’ve been using Elixer poly-coated strings with great success. They last an incredibly long time.
Some say they is a loss of projection with them, but I found it to be of little consequence. They’re worth the extra money.
On electrics, just change frequently, they’re cheap.

Spray some on a cloth, and wipe the string vigorously until they start singing (you’ll know what I mean when you do it). Do it until the noise absolutely runs you up the wall. It works pretty good. On the subject of keeping strings from becoming dull too quickly, I would suggest also that the salt in the sweat from your hands doesn’t help matters. One product I have used from when I first bought a guitar is called ‘Fast Fret’, a light oil in a stick form, which you rub along the strings before and after you play. I’ve found this to be really effective in keeping a bright sound, especially on the bottom E and A strings.

Problem is, I’m doing a refinishing project on a "real McCoy" and Fender is difficult about these things as they should be. Don’t give me a hard time about this. Some unit painted a vintage headstock with crackle paint. (This ‘relic’ thing is out of control!)

FYI – They ARE available out there and I did find one.

I was wondering if anyone knows what happend to Steve Lynch from Autograph. Just in case your wondering, he was an 8 finger guitar player. He is friggin amazing, and I am suprised that he doesn’t get more recognition. If you want to hear something cool from him, download the song "HammerHead off Napster. That is Steves instrumental.

The neck will be fine, but changing from 9’s to 10’s will change your intonation. That is to say when you play an open E, then the fretted E on the 12th fret, the fretted note may become flat or sharp. You can adjust your intonation by moving the saddles forward if the fretted note is flat, and back if it is sharp. You can do a decent job with a guitar tuner. If your not comfortable doing this, take it in & have a pro do it. Good luck.

Hi- Sorry to just send this, hope you don’t think I’m weird. I am just wondering if you are the same Johnny Ross who used to work at a theatre (AMC Eastland 6) many many years ago, with Shannon, John,Kristin Thomas, Mark, Bacon, Jeff P., Eric, Gretchen (that’d be me) etc.???? I’m just flippin’ through the JOhn Ross’ on google.com and there are too many! The John Ross I knew played guitar, went to Pickerington High school and was good at com puters, just thought I would see if you were him. If you are and you remember me, please send me an email, if not, no worries, just ignore this confusing message. Ok, bye! Go to ariausa.com or serach for aria guitars. I own a Pro II Cardinal Series CS-400 dated in the 80’s. It is my staple guitar, even with gibsons to choose from, I always go back to my aria.

make sure you change one string at a time, and start with the high E first(skinny). This will help keep the tension more even when you tune.

I agree, A good quality used Fender would be a good choice if you can find one and definitely take someone along who knows about playing, It’s been my experience that alot of shops will try to take advantage of someone who is new to playing. Personally, if i could not afford a quality American made strat then i would buy something else, because a good portion of what you are spending is only for that decal on the headstock if you know what i mean, and a new 00 strat won’t have the quality of other new guitars out there in the same price range. If you have youre heart set on a Strat than i would look for a good used one and if you can’t find that then save a little more for an American made. I played for 17 years before i got my first Strat, shes an American Deluxe with the locking tremelo setup, maple neck, and transparent Teal Green finish. I took out the stock pickups and dropped in an EMG-DG20, Oh is she a dream and i cant say enough good things about her. She ran me around 300 with the new pickups and will be my main guitar for quite a while now I’m sure.
Good luck with playing and don’t get frustrated by it in the beginning, the point where you become good enough to really enjoy playing is an important step, alot of people never get there, but once you get there its like nothing else.

E-mail me if i can help,
      Brad

A buddie pulled out this old Gretch that he hasn’t played for 25 years. Want’s to sell it. More importantly is it of value, I think it is. It looks similar to the Chet Atkins, buy scaled down. Its pale greenish. (I don’t have it here right now) hallow solid body no f-holes, he thinks it’s mid to late 50’s. 2 fat, looks like daulpole, pickups, one knob forward of the pickups, schaller pegs. I know it’s not much to go on, thanks

      : couldn’t tune it.
      : Please help me 🙂
      : Thank you

If your strings are new you need to stretch them out a little. Next you need to tune it with the tuning keys. This may take a little while at first because each time you tune a string the trem will move a little and the others will be slightly off. Once you get it really close you can lock the strings and use the fine tuners to get it perfect. It will take some getting used to but once you learn to tune it you will find it is a good bridge. Just don’t get frustrated. I had the same problem 5 years ago with my first Ibanez. You’ll get it tuned, don’t worry. Good luck.

: : I am looking for a gift for my husband. He currently owns a Kramer 1987 model guitar and
: : a Fender Stage Lead II Amp. I need some advise from someone knowlegeable on what is the
: : best guitar for the money. I dont want to spend a mint, but I dont want a cheap-o either.
      : : HELP!!!

: Well it depends. Does your husband, have any effects, you know pedals, or any kind of effects processor? If he doesn’t you could get him a nice effects processor, for like 00-500 dollars, and that is a very nice gift. As for a guitar, it really depends on what he plays, a safe pick would be a Fender Strat. They have sales on the current model, because they have come up with a new 2000 model. You could find a new 99′ Fender Strat, or Telecaster for that matter, around the 00 mark. For a guitarist, to have an American guitar, is very impressive. If you have any other questions, please to don’t hesitate to e-mail me.

It has been my experience that most guitarists HAVE TO PLAY NEW MERCHANDISE BEFORE THEY BUY IT. I have wasted several hundred dollars on musical gifts that were not exactly what the recipient wanted. Guitarists are very picky and take their gear personal. If you have to buy a guitar, Ben is right, Fender is a good bet. If the Kramer has a wide neck you can look at Ibanez and Jacksons. Make sure you have a good return policy at the store just in case. Remember that a gift certificate is always an option. Then he can get exactly what he wants. The last guitar I bought I played for 3 hours before I bought it and they gave me 30 days to change my mind if I got it home and didn’t like it.

Good luck either way. And let us know if you need any other help.

Well I power chord is just the root and the 5th in the chord, but a bar chord, requires that you barre, or whole down several notes on the same frets, and you are hitting multiple notes

: This may be one of the most embarassing questions ever, but how do you read the rythmn of a song from just music notation? If you buy one of the books like 101 Songs for easy guitar or the like, how do you read a strumming rythmn from the music charts? Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I’m a real novice

Well for strumming, they usually have up and down markers, that show you the strokes. Also they have a legend at the beggining of the song, to give you the beat. If there two eighth notes, with a 3 under it, that means you have to swing the song, kind of like a blues song.

Shane owns a music store ant doesn’t know what to tell customers asking about modeling amps??!!?? I hope you’ve got good sales help – you need to stay in the office. Tech 21 and Johnson are the best. Line 6 is more suited for studio use, and is very complicated to use ‘live’. The control settings take on different meanings under different amp settings. Then they print the ‘changes’ in a light gray font – impossible to read on a dark stage. The line 6 is the most potent of the three, though. Tone freaks will be alot happier with the Johnson or tech 21 combos. They are lighter, less expensive, very easy to use and tweak. One day I’ll be dumb enough to own a music store too…

Yeah its kinda scary! Some of the biggest names in rock and roll now are the same as when I was in high school.
There are some cool new bands out but I dont feel like they are the larger than life Cats I would go out to see in high school. I like bands like tool and limp bizkit and creed now but they dont blow me away. the last band to really turn my head was pearl jam but I hate the direction they’ve gone in. I grew up on ozzy, rush, zep, halen. But for all I know the new acts are the shit to the kids maybe its just the perspective.
One thing is for sure the music club seen for rock in the bay area is not what it was ten years ago when I was a kid. Most of the live rock venues have closed down and dried up. I dont know if kids are going to raves or what but the amount of all ages clubs is close to zero. Ya know now that I think about it… Who was the last ROCK GUITAR GOD. There has’nt been one in ages
Maybe Slash from guns and roses….. and how long ago was that? I think thats the difference we grew up in a era of ROCK GUITAR GODS. I’m talking about social Icons
Who drove kids into playing guitar like mag-nets! Halen,Page,Rhoads,Emmit,Lifeson,Slash. You know what I’m talking about.Times have changed But I’m really not worried sooner or latter the shit is going to break wide open. I would be happy to see a new band that could write some real catchy shit the kind that lasts longer than a month. But the industry will squeeze that sponge only long enough to get the water out.

: After reading the article of the future of copyright, one thing stuck out from that to me: That the large corperations will die a slow death. Well don’t count it.

: Sure, they’re being a pain in the arse at the moment, shutting down napster, but don’t for one second think that they’ll die a slow death from the change in tecnology. The way I see it, is that they’re just slowing things down a tad, until they can catch up and assess the next best way to screw artists and the public.

: They haven’t survived this long by being by ignoring whats around them. And like and large business, they will adapt – as it’s in they’re own best interests.

: Whether you love em, or hate em, the fact remains that they’ll still be controlling things for some time to come (unfortunately).

: I wish the best to all the independant artists that fly the coupe!
      : Pete

Why the hell do we need record companies, and distributers (music stores). Artists could be selling whole albums over the web for , and make a bigger profit, than if there were those 2 middle men. All these bands need is someone who could record good quality computer recordings, and advertise them over the net. If you get a Fan base, you wind up with air play on the radio eventually, and you will be on MTV, if you could stomach the channal. CUT THE MIDDLE MEN. They are not doing anything. If you say they will help with the tour you are wrong, because you could get corporate sponsors. How will it be distributed? Most of the early stuff won’t get as much exposure becasue not everybody has a computer, so lesser volume over the internet, and no distribution in music stores. We need to go ahead, and eliminate the music store, and make the internet an interactive music store

it is verry easy! all you need is a thing called a peg winder. im sure your local music store has one- should cost about two bucks. what you do is pop the pin on the bridge with the grooved edge of the peg winder bezel, bend the string at the winding close to the ball end, push the string into the hole, and re insert the pin. then put the string end through the hole in the tuner, and with a free hand pull it so that it bends just enought to catch an angle that gives you some slack without pulling back through the hole ( make sure you have enough slack to get about three or four winds around the peg!) then put your pegwinder to work! just wind untill your to pitch!

p.s. any more questions just email me at [email protected] or see my site http://www.terracemusiccenter.com

Artists often forget that, in order to be profitable overall, labels and publishers make the "hits" pay for all the dud’s they invest in. I can’t say how often this excuse is abused.

I too wish all us Indies, and even the Big Label Hits, well, but they’d better crack the business books and face that part of making a living. Whether it’s because they are lazy, naive, or impatient, the majority of major artists take a bath in their first contracts.

I just bought a Sigma TB1, it appears to be a fine guitar. However I must exert excessive force to make a cord or note. The neck is looks good with only a slight rise in the strings towards the higher frets.
      Any thoughts, lighter strings ect?

      Why is everybody complaing.
      1) Not all large corporations are bad. Some of them actualy do care for the artists. Because they do realise that without the artist, they will not exist.

      2) Nothing stops the artists to go solo and publish their work on the net on a "shareware" principle.

I think that it is to easy to complain. Stop seeing problems and start seeing oppertunities.

Here one more bit. I can’t explain the difference in strings, since the urban legend is that they all come from the same elves in the same factory. Nevertheless, after 30 years of playing 12-string (and believe me changing strings is a real chore) I’ve had very good results with two brands: Dean Markley Bronze and recently, Elixir’s strings are lasting incredibly and sound fine despite my reservations about the mystery coating on the wound strings. Best of luck.

Of 6yrolds i have no knowledge oother than my own exp. as one.
A good guit. is as (no hell more important) important for a
beginner as exp. player. the P.O.S. Silvertone i started w/only
made it harder & made me feel incompetant.
I currently play 2 mini guitars alot as serious inst’s with
thier own unique voices: a Baby Taylor( @250 at guitarcenter)
and a Mitchell "jet" electric (@ 200 or 150) at GC)
the taylor is a very beautiful sounding inst it remind me
of an old Gibson parlor guitar a la Rjohnson.
the mitchell is a single cut awy 1 pickup– i play it
      w/both standard tuning, A tuning(low string A instd of E)
and in A Slack key(hawaiian) – and others. A new set of strings
willnot hold standard tuning so well- i’ll switch the old strings of my les paul
      and they’re broken in.
btw–the taylor is standard tuning friendly=no similar
considerations- if you look into another excellent guitar
the "chiquita", by some guy in texas and billy gibbons from zz top
the webb site has recommended string weights which are
appropriate for standard tuning on an electric(im just too lazy
to buuy seperate sets im cheap too- i got 25 d’addario xl sets of strings and a lil’smokie amp for 25$
and untiltheyr gone they’re whayt im usin)
the prob with Chiguitais its price @450- its real nice though-as it should be
the mitchell is very good and versatile-good looking to-not like thtose lame fender shrinky-dink strats
it designed as itself- not as a shrunk down "real guitar"
it is a real guitar– the fretwork could use a little end filing
and i’d like a vers with more electronic options but
      that would srew the price.
This is the real answer: find a guitar that You want to play,
and then even if its not what the kid wants to do- youse got
another viable tool in the house- if th kid bomes a guitar player
they’ll still be playin this when thy’re in the nursing home
BTW2–women (esp. thse who are casual players)are big fans of
Travel guitars= the edge isnt running right across their breast

This happens to everyone. THose recommendations are fine, but you can only get a certain amount of time out of strings. If you try another Wayne Charvel trick, try boiling the strings in water, for like 10 minutes, treat it like pasta, just don’t eat it, and then put the strings back on. All the grease and gunk will come off, and you have brand new strings

My main guitar is a fender strat, the big apple model, with 2 seymour-duncan humbuckers, it sounds GREAT!! heavy, just like i like it, with the smooth play-ability of a strat neck. I play through a marshall halfstack (tubeless) with gain turned up to 10 baby!! LOL … I don’t do much effects. Just a boss phaser… I want a boss delay and an auto-wah. I hate the multi-effects units… boss rules. I play helmet and STP and stuff like that….

Before changing your diet, just try wiping your strings off top & bottom with a rag EVERY time you get done playing. When you sweat, you sweat salt. Salt on metal does bad things. I have doubled the life of my strings just by wiping them off every time.

: What do you look for in distortion pickups? Also what are the best ones you’ve come across?

Chad what kind of music are you playing, what kind of guitar do you have, what kind of amp do you have. These are the things us responders need put in the question to allow us to help you better!
My experience is that Humbuckers have the best high gain (distortion) applications. I like a brighter treble pick up in the bridge position for chunky guitar rthym and brite sounding leads and a sweeter sounding fatter pickup for the neck position for single note or high on the neck leads and volume down picking and chords . I play mostly Carvin guitars and I dig their pickups which are available online. But there are tons of great pickups available out there. Go try some out on some similar guitars and see what you think for yourself. Also ask a sales person(that you trust and if you dont trust your sales man shop somewhere else) a few questions and see what they recomend.
      good luck!

Guitars and women age but it’s more about your relationship at this point. Cosmetic surgery will only cheapen what you allready have so just keep playin her.
If she sounds good and she’s singin for ya there is no problem.
If you are paranoid about your investment well then look for a younger women or find a luthier and ask them if it would be safe to put a little tung oil on the back of the neck to seal it. Or get a new or used guitar (yes I know it costs money) Odds are a similar replacement for that guit would set you back some considerable cash but they are not the only brand out there. Happy Shopping!

: Im new to guitars, but I want to get a Fender. I have about 00 to spend so do I go for a Strat that wasnt made in the US or a Squire? Please help and thanks!

Snookdude is right Corinna you should play as many as possible. some guitars just fit together and sound better than others. As a general rule guitars that cost more usually sound better but dont let that stop you from buying a less exepensive guitar if it sounds and plays better than its American made brother that costs way more. Also there are plenty of nice used guitars looking for a home in a consignment shop near you. If I were you I would find a friend who has some nice equipment and has been playing awhile to go shopping with you. Your friends assesment and opinions may make purchasing the right guitar a little easier for you. You will have all their experience going to work for you.
F.Y.I. I purchsed my like new 1983 American made srat for 25.00 from a guy used and it plays and sounds great. All I had to do was call up an add in the paper.

      : Josh Hoke

O.K. Josh here’s what Wayne Charvel ( founder of Charvel Guitars and former master guitar luthier at Gibson Guitars ) told me about five years ago from his little custom guitar shop in Paradise California ( just up the hill from Chico California i.e. Chico State University) .He told me that he has seen this from a few guitar players where they seem to just corrode strings like their fingers are made of acid. His opinion is that it has to do with PH levels in your sweat which might be influenced by diet and body chemisrty. His recomondation at the time was to clean your strings with a little oil( I cant remember exactly what type but I’m sure one of those guitar cleaning kits would work ) or even use a little WD40 on your strings before and after playing for maximum protection. He also said try varying the foods you eat and see if that makes a difference. He was looking at my guitar at the time and asked me how old my strings are. He guessed about four months and I said how about two weeks. I had been practicing with my band and giging at the time so I probably had 30+ hours on them. So I guess it’s safe to say you are not alone out there. So the question for you is how long do you usually let your strings stay on. If you play alot then you will need to change strings more frequently and the oil and frequent cleaning will help also.

F.Y.I. Wayne is a very cool guy and I was fortunate enough to speak with him in his office in the back of his shop. This place is filled with pictures of him and just about anyone who was any one in the guitar playing world in the last twentyfive years. Theres a nice picture of Wayne with Eddie & Valerie Van Halen on the wall.I asked him about Eddie and he told me he (Wayne) used to own a small guitar shop in Southern California
some years ago and Eddie used to come in as a little kid and sit down on the floor and play guitar in his shop.
Wayne is still making beutiful guitars in his little shop in Paradise ( yes its a real town my buddy lives there ). He makes some fancy guitars up there some of which are covered in pieces of abalone shell(like the inlays but covering the entire body of the guitar) They are very beutiful. His son is getting in the act to and at the time was building custom covered guitar cases made to order. You may want to look around online and see if they have a posting anywhere.
      good Luck!

: : F.Y.I. You have to play each model and listen to each one on an individual basis. Two exact guitars may feel different to you. Play as many as you can and buy the best you can afford. The more it costs the better the sound and workmanship, usually. Remember, play lots of guitars before you buy. Good luck.

: can someone help me chose an amp. I am going to buy a epiphone les paul and like the sound of groups like oasis and nirvana. i was thinking of getting a marshall but i am confused on all the different types

As well you should be my friend, you have just entered guitar pergatory. what kind of amp is right for you?
A marshall may be fine for you but I would buy one with a tube pre-amp and a tube power amp. I dont like the (valve-state) stuff with the solid state power section.
      Bad Marshsall bad!
Whats your budget buddy thats an important place to start.
Then again buying an amp you end up hating and selling for a loss and then buying a Mesa Boogie or your personal equivalent to that could be much more painful and expensive than buying a good amp in the first place. I think the Amp you buy should have a great high gain disortion channel. I hear people talking about this pedal and that pedal all the time. But this means their amp is missing the core building blocks of great tone.

I recently purchased an Ovation Legend (Nylon) model 1773. It came with the
      OP-24+C (built in tuner) preamp.
The legend use to be available with the OP-X.
Has anyone compared the tonal difference between these two preamps. Does
      the OP-X

Was wondering if anyone out there had contacts or
information regarding the pedigree of an old guitar I have recently acquired…

It is an Epiphone, semi hollow archtop with in red with the pickup toggle switch on the lower cutaway (335 style), a Gibson Maestro Tremolo tailpiece and a small stcker on the inside saying EA-250, made in
Kalamazoo, Michigan, no discernable serial number.

Needs some work but plays faily well and sounds pretty good, even though it has pickups on it that I have never seen before… very curious… anyway, if anyone has seen this and/or knows anything about
it, I would be real curious

      Thanks in adance,

: Does anyone know anything about the "Framus Ruby Riot" amplifier? : How good is it, and how reliable? I bought mine about six months ago and I really like it. I’ve used Masrshall amps for years until now and I will never go back! The clean sound is the real star of this amp. Bright, clear & full but never harsh. The reverb is a bit weak but I heard that a Mullard ECC81 helps this. The drive channel is a real classic rock sound and suits my Strat very well. There is heaps of gain available but it remains very clear. If there is a critisism of this channel it is that it doent do the "just breaking up" sound very well. I’ve just got a Keeley modified Blues Driver for this and I now have all the sounds I need. There is an effects loop but I have not tried this as yet. Class A amps run notoriously hot but this amp so far has not had any problems. Whether it is worth the full list price is a moot point but for what I paid I am more than happy.

: Does anyone know anything about the "Framus Ruby Riot" amplifier? : How good is it, and how reliable? Good, very good. I have had mine for 2½ years now. It’s a beauty. The sound is great! I will define the sound as a Vox AC30 with a modern twist. It was just the amp I was looking for. I played 2 years in a blues band. Now I play pop and rock. It’s a very good amp for all styles… The clean sound is beautiful even when you crank the volume up. The lead is for pure rock’n’roll. As long as I play the guitar, the Ruby Riot will follow along…. Try one. And you will get hooked. Even in love, I think!

Mine’s over 25 years old. I’ve drawn a big blank so far trying to find out a bit more about them.

: A friend let me borrow his "Gibson SG Firebrand". Did Gibson really make this guitar or is it a fake/hoax?
: The serial no. has it being made in 1980. I’ve never
: heard of such a guitar before now.

Yup. it’s real. They also made Les Paul Firebrands
      too.

It’s variant of the ’79 "The SG", which had a walnut
neck and body with a ebony fretboard. The neck had
the same width as a Les Paul In 1980 the SG Firebrand
came out; instead of walnut, mahogany was used, the
neck/fretboard was the same LP width with ebony. The
choice of finish was either natural or antique mahogany. I;ve never seen the antique finish, I;ve been
told it was mildly distressed…. The SG Firebrand
      was renamed the SG Deluxe.

In the early 80’s I bought an SG. My favourite rock guitar. I do not recall that it’s a Firebrand model but it did have the Gibson name burn into it’s head as shown in the picture. Exactly identical to this one except without the name of Firebrand of course. It’s the closest to a Frank Zappa version or an ’61 model I can find. One problem though – it constantly go out of tune and the action was just awful. I sold it after about two years. Thank God, they’re making reissues of ’61 SG these days. I can finally buy a real good one – with the whammy bar as well. : : A friend let me borrow his "Gibson SG Firebrand". : What is f-spacing?

Its short for Floyd spacing. Meaning that the pole pieces are spaced differently with a Floyd Rose Tremolo. If you have a guitar with a Floyd, you could only replace remaining pickups with ones with F-spacing.

Don’t do anything!! Anything will devalue the guitar. Esspecially if you have some kind of burst on the neck, which is a Gibson color. Many guitars that age have belt buckle wear on the back, and hand stripping on the neck, if anything just smooth it out, and hope for the bes. You might want to consider retiring the guitar from active duty, and buy something new, and play that guitar sparingly. If you could deal with, nothing will really happen to the guitar, if you handle it like you usually do. Just look at Willie Nelsons guitar, that thing still plays reasonable wellt

Hi. I’m own an old Ibanez RG550, which I’m customizing. I’m looking for some good pick-ups ( 2xhumbuckers and 1xsingle-coil). The sound I’m looking for is a chunky low-end for rhythm playing (Nuno-type sound), with clear but powerful high ends. I’m also looking for coloured pick-ups: humbuckers = pink, single-coil = neon green, as I’ve taken the paint off the guitar and think a little colour would look awesome. My problem is that I live in South Africa, and I’m having a hell of a time finding anything. I’ve searched the web for DiMarzio, but can’t seem to find a web site?! Can anyone help with advice and maybe a contact site or number where I can ascertain prices and ordering details. Any help will be appreciated.

If I write a song and start playing the first chord as (A) what other chords can I use that would fit. Is there a variety and how can I figure it out. How will I know what minor chords would fit also. Lastly for lead breaks if my chord progression was A,D, E can I start playing lead anywhere in those chord areas.Any assitance would be appreciated
